Droid Incredible Reportedly Getting Android 2.2 by Early August

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 10:19 AM PDT

Were you able to get your hands on a Droid Incredible? We sure hope so, because one of Verizon’s best handsets is about to get better, if a ninja is speaking the truth. According to this particular ninja, it looks like the Incredible might actually be the first in line to get the Android 2.2 update.

Well, perhaps tied, if the original Motorola Droid is still scheduled to get its own update by the end of July. In any event, the ninja suggests that the update will arrive on all Droid Incredible handsets (in the wild, at least), at the end of July, or by early August. So, what’s it include?

Obviously, you get some of that Froyo goodness. You also get WiFi 802.11/n support, 3G Mobile Hotspot (which you’ll probably have to pay for), HTC Widget for Email and News, EAS updates, 720p video recording, Amazon MP3 access, Skype, and My Verizon applications.

Basically, everything you’ve been waiting for, and more. So, start counting down the days, folks — the end of July is just right around the corner.

Motorola Portrait Slider Shows Off the Droid Eye

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 09:14 AM PDT

When it comes to Motorola, the DROID name is meant for high-end devices. That’s why their DEVOUR handset didn’t get the DROID title — it just didn’t make the cut. And, as far as anyone of us here know, that game plan hasn’t changed for Sanjay Jha and company. But, if these new blurry screenshots are any indication, then it looks like Motorola is looking to change up their high-end device line-up with a bit of a portrait slider-refresh.

There’s no hard details on whatever device this is. It’s obviously a portrait slider. It obviously has a keyboard that looks strikingly similar to the Motorola Charm’s. And it’s obviously booting up with that oh-so-familiar Droid eye. But, what does that tell us? One of two things, actually: either Motorola is changing everything around, and they’re going to start shoving the DROID title on every Android-based handset they’ve got planned for Verizon. Or, they’re planning on putting the specifications necessary to make a high-end device into a portrait slider.

Let’s face it: just because it has a certain form factor, doesn’t mean it’s going to be a mid-range device. Just look at the Palm Pre and Palm Pre Plus, folks. Portrait slider with a 3.2-inch touchscreen — but definitely not mid-range by any other notable feature. So, what’s Motorola’s plan? We wish we knew, but hopefully it all gets cleared up soon enough. Let us know in the comments if this handset is something you’d want in your collection.

Motorola Droid X All Set for Software Update

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:50 AM PDT

A day before the Droid X went on sale, there were several folks out there reporting that the handset was already getting an OTA software update. As far as we can tell, it certainly hit every “test” device out there already available on the market, and now it looks like Verizon’s all set to launch the same update for the rest of the Droid Xs out there.

As you can see from the image, the PDF talking about what the update brings is already out there, so we at least know the update is coming. It’s real, and what not. No, as much as we’d love to say that it’s Android 2.2 and everything’s right with the world — that’s not the case. The update is version 1.13.604.en, and it’s designed to be just a software update. Not a major upgrade. But, let’s get to the important part. What’s it bringing to the table:

  • Faster and smoother transitions between the camera and camcorder
  • Redesign of weather widget icons
  • Faster Exchange ActiveSync email loading
  • Streamlined organization of newly downloaded applications
  • Improved battery charging status indicator
  • Organized favorite contacts by call count
  • Updated Bluetooth connection for enhanced video sharing experience
  • Coordinated date and time across phone displays
  • Cleaner looking status bar for GPS symbol
  • Improved sync capabilities for 3G Mobile Hotspot
  • Faster Visual Voice Mail loading

Suggestions are that the update is coming today, July 19th, and that it will obviously be rolled out to all those Droid X handsets over the course of the next few days. However, no official word from Verizon has come forward, so don’t take that as the gospel quite yet. One thing we should point out, is that as usual, Verizon has included a link at the bottom of the image, saying you should go here to get all the information about the update. It tells you to go to the Droid’s website. Well, obviously you don’t want that handset, so go to the Droid X’s instead. (That’s a link, by the way.)
