| Motorola Droid X Running Android 2.2 Posted: 27 Jul 2010 10:40 AM PDT We’re all eagerly anticipating the release of Android 3.0. That’s just the truth. But, that’s not stopping everyone else from looking at Android 2.2 and when it’s going to launch on the Droid X. When the new flagship device from Motorola and Verizon was announced, speculation about it launching with Android 2.2 was pretty high. Of course, we know now that it’s running Android 2.1, with a date “some time in July” aimed for its update to Android 2.2. (Thankfully, August is in the Summer.) But, that’s not stopping the developers. And, considering the Motorola Milestone just got Android 2.2 goodness, why shouldn’t the other eFuse-based device get it, too?

Sadly, there’s just a screenshot at this point. And yes, it could be fake. But, considering the weight behind MyDroidWorld and their development community, we’ll go ahead and give them the benefit of the doubt at this point. So, yes, that’s a Droid X running Android 2.2. We’re sitting on the edge of our chairs just waiting to see any more details about this, so hopefully you’ll wait with us. As soon as something else comes to light, we’ll be sure to pass it along. | Motorola Droid X: Root the Easy Way Posted: 27 Jul 2010 10:34 AM PDT We’ve already told you that the Droid X is rooted. In fact, we gave you some pretty good instructions on how to do it. But, not everyone out there wants to get into the ADB shell and put in some command line. And we know where you’re coming from. So, if you’re still interested in rooting your brand new device and getting rid of some of that bloatware, here’s an easy method. Yes. It’s easy. Like, one click easy.

Thanks to a few folks over at AllDroid, you now get an EasyRoot method, where it just takes one click to let the software either root, or unroot your Droid X. See? We told you it was easy. It just takes a quick download, and then you’ll be good to go with whatever you want to do. Of course, now that it’s legal to root your phone, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of this? And, if you do, let us know in the comments. [via AllDroid] ) |
| Motorola Droid and Droid X, HTC Incredible to Get Android 2.2 Beginning August 6th, Rumors Suggest Posted: 27 Jul 2010 10:22 AM PDT Right now, it’s a pretty hard sale to say that any other wireless carrier in the United States has a better line-up of Android-based handsets than Verizon. With that being said, everyone’s waiting for their high-end devices to get their software updated to Android 2.2. While there’s been plenty of rumors, there’s never not room for another one. So, here’s your latest: Beginning August 6th, the Motorola Droid, Droid X, and HTC Incredible could all be seeing their Android upgraded with some frozen yogurt.

According to Android Spin, they’ve just got word from one of their trusted tipsters that Verizon is going to push the official upgrade to Android 2.2 to all three handsets starting on August 6th, and that the roll-out should be finished by August 15th. That doesn’t jibe well with the whole “end of July” for the Motorola Droid and “end of August” updates for the Motorola Droid X, as it lands pretty flatly right in the middle of those two dates, but hey, we’re not going to say it’s a bad thing. Of course, there’s no word from Verizon at this point. They’ll keep this on lock down for a bit — well past the testing phase, at least. And, let’s be honest — all anyone can hope is that this update process goes a lot smoother than their updates to Android 2.1 with the Motorola Droid. Unless Verizon wants a whole other group of people angry at them. [via Android Spin] ) |
| Google Maps Updated to 4.4, Brings Places Into the Mix Posted: 27 Jul 2010 09:33 AM PDT Considering the nature of Google Maps, one should expect that it would be upgraded quite often. As it stands right now, we’re at six updates in as many months, most of which brought something new and exciting to the software. This time around, Google’s updated Maps to 4.4, and with it they’re bringing the Places application.

So, what does Places do? You’ve probably already figured it out, just by the name. It’s a “new” way to find local places around you, so you have a better way to find something you’re looking for. Sure, it’s a little Yelp-like, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Features within Places include the ability to make your own categories, so if you find yourself searching for the same thing over and over again, even as you enter new areas, you’ll be able to search for that category quickly and easily, without having to go into too much detail. You can pick up the update in the Android Market right now, if you already haven’t. It works for devices running Android 1.6 or later. We’re really enjoying the functionality that Google’s bringing to Google Maps, so we can’t wait to see what next month brings us in their inexorable update. [via Google Lat Long] ) |
| Motorola Milestone Gets Android 2.2, Unofficially Posted: 27 Jul 2010 09:19 AM PDT As of this writing, it looks like Motorola is on the fence regarding a future update to Android 2.2, as it relates to the Milestone. It just got Android 2.1, so we can see where Motorola is coming from. That’s from a logic standpoint. But, from the much healthier standpoint of wanting the most current software on our device at all times, we’re wondering what they’re thinking. Thankfully, though, we’ve got a great development community out there — and here you have Android 2.2, in build FRF91 — which has already made the rounds over plenty of devices already.

Of course, we all know that the Milestone is locked down. It uses the same eFuse technology that became so shockingly famous over the release of the Droid X the last couple of weeks. But, that’s not stopping the 7 months of hard work since its release. There’s something to do with “second boots” that we’re honestly going to say we’re not sure the details of, but it works, and Froyo is definitely running on a Motorola Milestone. So, that’s just plain good news. Check out the video below to see for yourself, and we’ll keep you informed of any future changes, as well. Click here to view the embedded video. | Thumbplay cloud-based music service supports Android offline play Posted: 27 Jul 2010 06:32 AM PDT

A company called Thumbplay Music has announced that it now has a new app that supports Android devices that allows the user to listen to all the music they want from the library of about nine million tracks. The cool part is that the service supports offline play so you can listen to that music when a connection is not available. The app also supports the import of playlists from iTunes along with import of tracks from favorite artists. The app can be grabbed with a free three-day trial and monthly service starts at $9.99. ) |
| AMOLED takes on Super LCD in side-by-side HTC testing video Posted: 27 Jul 2010 03:14 AM PDT HTC’s decision to adopt both AMOLED and Super LCD (SLCD) for their smartphones has led to plenty of arguments over which technology is better, and now HowardForums has waded in. They’ve been comparing a TELUS HTC Desire – which uses an SLCD panel – with the Google Nexus One’s AMOLED display, to see which is better.
As you might have guessed, the answer isn’t quite that straightforward. The AMOLED has better vertical viewing angles while the SLCD bested it on horizontal angles; neither could match the Super AMOLED of the Samsung Wave (as used in the Galaxy S family of devices) for contrast. More details in the video below. Click here to view the embedded video. [via SlashGear] ) |

| Clean your Samsung Captivate from Bloatware Posted: 26 Jul 2010 12:14 PM PDT If you are an owner of Samsung Captivate, this is the best news you might ever heard so far in regards to bloatware. Many of you are finding that Samsung Captivate has captivate your heart and you just love everything about it except those preloaded AT&T apps. Most of us would like to keep our phone away from bloatware, but it’s not as easy as uninstalling app that you installed from Android Market. Fortunately, guys at XDA-developers has come up with a solution to get rid of those bloatware.
Here is the bad news, the clean up method requires rooting your Samsung Captivate. BriefMobile has some good guide to get you started. Sadly, AT&T is not the only carrier that bundle bloatware onto their handsets – carrier like Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and others all over the world practice similar method of provisioning their phones .
