PS3 assault rifle: CTA think your war games “lack that necessary bit of realism”

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:31 AM PDT

Questionable immersion product of the day for your Friday afternoon comes from CTA, which releases a PS3 assault rifle controller, for those of you who've always wanted your Modern Warfare massacres to feel a bit more real. The gun comes complete with functioning trigger, and hammy promo video.

The PS3 gun also, terrifyingly, claims to have 'realistic' gun sounds. Thankfully, this isn't quite true. Rifles fire at somewhere in the region of 110-140db. Normal conversation is 50db. A real rifle is damagingly loud, but that crackly white noise in the video? Not loud. Probably not as loud as someone clearing their throat. And that's a good thing, as nobody wants a PS3 periphery to be duffing up their hearing.

As well as the trigger action, the assault rifle has all the PS3 controller buttons for moving and aiming dotted along the barrel of the gun, just like a real life soldier. CTA invite you to get down on your front on the living room carpet as well, for that extra edge of battlefield authenticity.

It’s not exactly in the same league as the cutesy Sony Move gun peripheral is it? For some Friday afternoon distraction, here’s the video…

Cineworld upgrades 3D specs: embarassment now optional

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:25 AM PDT

Cineworld just upgraded the 3D glasses on offer at its cinemas, plumping for aviator-style specs that mean you won’t look a complete dork when you leave the multiplex forgetting you’ve still got them on.

Cineworld reckons the 3D aviator glasses are “this season's must-have item for stylish cinema viewing,” and while we’re not sure anyone will notice we’re wearing them in the darkened auditorium, they do look a lot less bulky than the movie goggles we’ve been forced to don in the past.

Using phrases such as “on-trend” and namedropping Kate Moss, Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham as fans of Aviator eyewear, Cineworld’s clearly not gunning for acne-ridden movie spods, but instead trying to make 3D sexy.

Has it succeeded? At the very least, these 3D Aviators look a lot less bulky than standard cinema specs. But the big news for those with prescription lenses already perched on their nose is that Cineworld are also offering clip-on 3D glasses for spectacle wearers.

The clip-on lenses grab on to the bridge of your existing spectacles. That’s much better than balancing a pair of second specs over your own. Right? Shout up in the comments below.

iPhone 4 free case offer is go: there is an app for it!

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:10 AM PDT

The free iPhone 4 case offer promised by Steve Jobs at the iPhone 4 press conference last week is now open. To get hold of yours you'll need two things: an iPhone 4 and the free iPhone 4 Case Program app. That's right, there's an app for that and it can check whether you've really got an iPhone 4 and when you snapped it up. Read on for details of the iPhone 4 cases on offer and the virtual small print…

If you bought your iPhone 4 before today, you'll need to apply for your free iPhone 4 case via the iPhone 4 Case Program app before August 22. Anyone nabbing an iPhone 4 from now on will have 30 days from the time they buy their new phone to grab a free case, Apple won't just be slipping them into the bag automatically.

The iPhone 4 Case Program app will only install on an iPhone 4 (it simply refused to acknowledge the existence of the iPhone 3G we pointed it at) and will check the IMEI and serial number of your phone to make sure its legit. Once it's done that you can choose from Apple's free iPhone 4 case options.

You're out of luck if you fancied a Bumper in a snazzy colour as Apple's only handing the black version out for free. The other options are the Belkin Shield Micra, a diamonds/smoke Griffin Motif, the black/black graphite Griffin Reveal Etch, black tartan Speck Fitted Case or black Speck PixelSkin HD. Basically your free iPhone 4 case is a Henry Ford situation, you can have any colour you like as long as it's black.

Currently the iPhone 4 Case Program is showing the free iPhone 4 case shipping in between 3 to 5 weeks so you'll have a little wait on your hands. And while the app asks you to apply "if you are experiencing reception problems" we have a feeling everyone with an iPhone 4 will snap one up regardless. But don't try and nab two, as you can see in the gallery above, the app knows all!

Let us know: are you happy with how Apple has handled the iPhone 4 antenna row? And what free case will you be choosing?

Thanks to Paul Cutler, Jay Mann and Lee Rainbow for dropping us a line!

White iPhone 4: delayed again, but is anyone waiting?

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:28 AM PDT

Apple's white iPhone 4 is being pushed back again, after announcements that the device would be shipping at the end of July. Here at Electricpig, we wonder whether anyone is actually waiting on the white iPhone 4…

Apple said: "White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected."

The wider issue is whether anyone who’s not yet got an iPhone 4, and intends to buy one, is actually waiting on a white version. God forbid the white iPhone 4 arrives and has that ‘black sock in white wash’ hue.

Are you holding out? Click and tell…

Samsung Galaxy S ad: smartest iPhone 4 jibe yet?

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:21 AM PDT

The latest Samsung Galaxy S ad is one of the subtlest digs at the iPhone 4 antenna issue we've seen so far. Those signal bars that shoved their way into "hello" aren't as direct as the approach Apple’s taken since the iPhone 4 press conference, flinging up videos of rival phones (including the Nokia N97 Mini and Samsung's own Omnia 2) but they definitely get the message across. If you want to compare and contrast the warring smartphones, dive into our Samsung Galaxy S review and equally expansive iPhone 4 review. We do love a good scrap!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro review: Ultimate buyer’s guide

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT

We much preferred the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro to its non-Pro version in our review. If you missed it, here is your chance to catch up, find out why a little keypad is better than no keypad and let us help you shop around for a bargain in our Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro review: Ultimate buyer’s guide.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro review: Android 1.6
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro review: What’s new?

Best for early adopters

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro is easy to find on contract, but if you have a good tariff already or fancy coddling together your own PAYG deal then you should expect to pay between £200 and £250 for an unlocked, SIM-Free Xperia Mini Pro.

Handtec are offering the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro for just £208.99, which is as good a deal as we have found – although only in Black. If (and this is probably a small niche) you want one but aren’t bothered about the network unlock you could try Very.co.uk – just £199, but it appears to be locked to O2. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Best for data hogs

The Xperia X10 Mini Pro’s real keyboard means it is much more suited to sending emails and updating social network sites than its keyless relative. With a decent webkit browser too you may want to get a tariff that will let you browse to your heart’s content.

Go via Mobiles.co.uk and you can snag a 300 minute, unlimited web deal on T-Mobile for £25/month. It’s an 18 monther too, which is always our preference.

Best for chatterboxes

If you like to chat, but also like to text, 3 have an interesting deal £30/month – you get either 900 minutes or 900 texts and can swap between them. 1 minute=1 text.

Also on 3 is their One Plan – £30 for 2000 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. Not bad at all.

Best overall deal

If you don’t mind the two-year lock-in, 3’s One Plan is worth a look (see above) but if that is a concern we would recommend  checking out Mobiles.co.uk’s T-Mobile Web 600 deal. 6oo Minutes, unlimited data and 500 texts, all for £30/month over 18 months. Get in now and there are a number of cashback sweeteners for you to choose from too.

BBC News iPhone and iPad apps out today: photos and video

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:05 AM PDT

The BBC News iPhone and iPad app which was originally unveiled in February has finally been approved. It was delayed following complaints from rivals but the BBC Trust has given it the nod and it's headed for the iTunes App Store later this afternoon. If you're not a member of the iHordes, BBC News apps for other devices including Blackberry and Android are due in the next few months. Read on for more details on the BBC News iPhone and iPad app, a video of it in action and news on the forthcoming BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport apps…

The free BBC iPhone apps were originally due to launch in April but was delayed while the BBC Trust explored whether it would unfairly affect commercial rivals. But now the BBC Trust report has concluded that the "market is already trending toward free apps" so the Beeb is free to unleash its offerings.

The design of the BBC News iPhone app doesn't seem to have changed much since we first saw it with carousels for different categories of news, a breaking news ticker at the top and a button to stream BBC News live. The BBC News app uses the same design on the iPad but makes use of the extra real estate.

The BBC News app is a universal app so you only need to install it once to use it on both the iPad and iPhone. The BBC developers have also added a personalisation feature to add and reorder news categories. You can share stories via email, Facebook or Twitter.

On his blog, Director of BBC Future Media & Technology, Erik Huggers, promises that the BBC News app and  the forthcoming iPlayer and BBC Sport apps are headed to "Blackberry and Android phones in addition to other devices later in the year." A slide in his presentation back in February featured Palm, Windows Mobile and Samsung's bada OS too. Hopefully Windows 7 Phone will earn a slot now it's on the horizon.

The BBC is also touting a set of new launcher apps for Blackberry which give you one touch access to the BBC News, BBC Sport and BBC Mobile sites. You can grab the straight from your phone using the following link – BBC Blackberry apps.

Take a gander at the BBC News iPad app in action in the video below and hit the comments to let us know what you make of the BBC’s new app. Are there any features it’s missing? Is the focus on Apple devices irritating?

£23 tablet PC unveiled in India

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 05:45 AM PDT

The Indian Government’s Human Resource Development minister unveiled a surprising new entry in the filed of ultra-cheap PCs today – the pound shop iPad.

Well, ok, its not actually called that, but this amazingly cheap tablet PC could fill such a niche in the developing world.

The tablet is designed for ultra-low power consumption and frankly, isn’t going to be playing Angry Birds any time soon.  That’s not the point though – this little beauty runs at just 2 watts (you can add solar cells too if you like), boasts a 2GB solid state disk drive (you can attach a 32GB add on drive) and has a seven inch touch screen.

The key lies in the Linux operating system which as well as being free, to reduce costs even further, supports a huge amount of apps already. The makers have kitted the tablet out with a modern web browser, Office-compatible word processor and spreadsheet and users can easily add more from the Linux library.

By using cheap components and applying some crafty economies of scale the researchers at the Indian Institutes of Technology reckon they can knock this tablet out for just 1600 Rupees – just under £23. The Indian Government is now inviting private industry to step in to see if it can lower the cost even further. If it can manage it, access to ultra-cheap computers like this would be a great boon to business and education in the country.

“This is real and tangible and we will take it forward,” said HRD minister Kapil Sibal.

Commenter of the week: Congratulations Lauren!

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 05:22 AM PDT

We've been dishing out Electricpig mugs and digicash vouchers to the best Electricpig commenters, and this week Lauren's frustrated comment caught our eye. This week, Apple was on the receiving end of her ire. Read on, and see how she's turned frustration into profit!

When we asked whether you'd had problems after upgrading to iTunes 9.2 we had lots of feedback from readers still struggling with their iPod classics. It's a problem we've been charting for months, with no response from Apple to cure syncing problems.

Lauren has been struggling for almost nine months now, and commented "Mine still doesn’t connect and hasn’t since 9.0 update in Nov 2009 !!! I’m getting fed up, contacted Watchdog they told Apple and they said nothing ! COME ON APPLE !!!"

Sorry we can't chivvy Apple along for you Lauren, but how about an Electricpig mug so you can enjoy a nice calming cup of tea instead? We'll even stuff it with vouchers for you – iTunes or Amazon, your choice, although we've an inkling you'll go with Amazon after your iTunes problems…
