Washing Machine Goes Wall Mount Posted: 19 Jul 2010 03:50 AM PDT As promised, I'm here with the details on the Dismount Washer. It's a concept that looks at space saving and hygiene at one go. The way it works is like this, you have your own personal tub for your laundry that can be mounted on an "energy stick". Using high-pressure steam as its source for cleaning, the washers does its job, and gives a fresh batch of washed clothes. A touchscreen display is integrated for easy navigation and menus. Ideal setup for those who prefer using Laundromats or don't have space for a washing machine at home. Dismount Washer is one of the Finalist 8 for the Electrolux Design Lab Competition. Check out their video highlighting the Top 8 at the end of the post. Designer: Lichen Guo ---------- |
Gloves For Women, We’re Not Sexist Posted: 19 Jul 2010 01:38 AM PDT NordicPul outdoor gloves are used for light duty outdoor work during the winter season. Designed specifically for women, the elastic cord sewn into the top of the glove controls tension around the hand, individually fitting every woman’s hand. The thin layers of Thinsulate and Hipora materials make the glove both flexible and waterproof. The bright colors and graphic palm design mimic images of winter but also stand out to easily identify. The NordicPul Outdoor Gloves is a 2010 IDEA Design Winner. Designer: Heather Bybee ---------- |
Visualize Your Finances, Ouch! Posted: 19 Jul 2010 01:36 AM PDT Apparently a lot of Swedish households are having difficulties paying their bills so designer Hampus Edström created the Budget Tool to make even Suze Orman happy. His research brings some hilarity as he concludes the main problem is Swedes rarely respond to a situation unless it’s visually appealing. Hey, I’d agree with that! The reality is people live beyond their means because they don’t have an understanding of where their money goes. In this day in age, digital money is hard to keep track of and much easier to spend. The budget tool consists of a touchscreen PDA (haven’t seen that word in awhile) and customized software to register your expenses. A physical bar diagram then dynamically changes to show income vs. expenditures – in a very minimal but typically Scandinavian way. Hey, it’s design art meant to warn when you’re about to go broke. I’ll buy into that. Designer: Hampus Edström ---------- |
Posted: 19 Jul 2010 01:00 AM PDT You got to agree that the skeletal system is a genius of design; it protects the delicate organs inside while giving support to our lustrous skin. If we were to apply the same design for our mobile phones then it's quite possible to wipe out the peripheral "phone covers and cases" industry. I'm talking about the LG Exo Smartphone Concept. The key feature in this concept is a high strength polymer exoskeleton for protecting the delicate internal components while supporting its external rubber skin. The end result is a good-looking phone that does not require any protective case that mars its beauty. You get to enjoy the phone in its intended avatar! The reason why I relate to this concept is that my gorgeous iPhone lies hidden beneath this hideous cover, lest it falls down and cracks! Designer: Benjamin Lotte ---------- |
Posted: 19 Jul 2010 12:11 AM PDT Adaptation – that’s what this project is about. Designer Keith Xianrong Zheng presents “Diator Rack,” a research project based on the book: “Thoughtless Acts” by Jane Fulton Suri and IDEO. This is one of those fantastic senior projects that design students do, this one from Zheng, a student at Central Saint Martins – smart, well thought out, well executed. This one’s a rack which is super simple, sturdy, and heats up your clothing as it hangs up on the rack. Toasty! Zheng did a whole lotta research and development here, and found one of the super awesome secrets of living in a winter wonderland like me (I live in Minnesota) – that is, of course, drying your wet clothing off on the radiator. What this radiator rack does is work basically the same way a radiator does with heat flowing through several parts of it allowing for some excellent drying of clothes, but with the added bonus of not being ugly! It’s completely the opposite of ugly in fact, looking so nice you might just wanna kiss it. Then, when not in action supporting the drying of clothes, the rack acts as a simple holder of those same jackets, coats, hats, shoes, or whatever else you can think to hang up there. Posted: 19 Jul 2010 12:03 AM PDT This car right here goes by the name “AMV-R”, an acronym which stands for Automotive Visual Racing. And it’s fantastic. Your eyeballs are going to explode when you peek at the images in this post’s gallery, if you haven’t already. But then again, if you had already, you wouldn’t have eyes. Designer Alexei Mikhailov presents a spectacular vision that mixes Italian and German styling with an “exotic” and precise surface flow. Alas, this car is but a vision. It is neither a prototype nor is it planned for production. But we can LOOK at it, can’t we? Yes we can. What a shell it is, yes? What a fantastic vision. Theoretically this lightning bolt of an auto would have a highly efficient twin turbo V 10 engine, generating 850hp. That means it’d rock. It’d rock so hard. Designer: Alexei Mikhailov ---------- |
Skeletal Electrics on Two Wheels! Posted: 19 Jul 2010 12:03 AM PDT Oh my goodness, this is a shiny, sharp looking triad of motorcycle vehicles. Before you get down too far in the description, take note that the red and the black are diesel/electric engines while the gray is an electric only, working with the battery. Then below that in this project post’s gallery you’ll see the “shared” battery station, which is quite the looker and something I’d sure like to see in the real world for real. Designer Paolo De Giusti presents three Naked bikes. First are the red and the black models, the “900 SD.” Style inspired by the old Moto Guzzi productions single cylinder bikes. Designed to be “romantic.” Deliberately limited in aerodynamic protection, forcing the rider to lie down on the tank whilst driving. Engine is a single cylinder 903 cc with direct injection and turbo diesel – for RACING FAST. Form IS function in this project, each element in place for a specified purpose. Then the “SE” Big Battery Naked. This is based on the frame of the “900 SD” models, but instead with an eye pointed at the future. Two electric motors in each wheel for traction and braking energy recovery. The bike – this is important – contains a large removable battery pack and 2 fixed backup batteries. This bike uses the “shared system battery.” With this system, the designer takes into account the idea that everything about electric batteries is better than conventional engine systems EXCEPT the fact that they’ve got that long time for charging up. This system does away with that with a shared battery system. In this system there will be stations positioned throughout the environment of the biker that use robots to take out and replace batteries whenever the motorcycle runs low on battery life. Not only would this system make the process of getting fuel as good as it is already, the battery switching time is projected to be much LESS than that of filling up your tank with gasoline! Hooray! SPECS! I love specifications written out so utterly simple like this. All you designers, take note! This is awesome. 900 SD “Big Mono Naked” (Red and Black models) Engine type : single cylinder Diesel Turbo —————————– SE “Big Battery Naked” Engine type : 2 electric motor fixed to wheels Designer: Paolo De Giusti ---------- |
