Kyocera Zio for Cricket Now Available, Just $249.99

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 02:03 PM PDT

Cricket isn’t as large as, say, Verizon. But that’s not stopping them from bringing an Android-powered device to the market. The Zio is a handset that we’ve known about for a few months now, and we know there’s a few Cricket customers out there who’ve been waiting patiently for it to officially release. Well, today you can mark on your calendar as the day it came to be.

The Zio features a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display. It has all the standard bells and whistles, like 3G connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS, and integrated WiFi. There’s a 3.2MP camera on the back, with the ability to record video. You get a microSD card slot, too. Unfortunately, it’s launching with Android 1.6, but we have heard in the past that Kyocera does have every intention of upgrading the device to a newer version. No word on when that will be, though. You can pick up the Zio right now for $249.99 (there’s no contracts, remember?), and you’ll need to use their $55 data/rate plan, too. Anyone interested? Oh, and just a quick note. If you buy online, you get an instant $20 discount. So, that price will be $229.99, as the picture above suggests.

HTC Desire for T-Mobile UK Getting Android 2.2 in September

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 01:53 PM PDT

The roll out for Android 2.2, or Froyo, has gone relatively better than expected. It’s managed to make its way to some devices that many didn’t think would get it until the end of the year (like, Christmas time), and we’ve even seen a device officially launch with the updated mobile Operating System. With that being said, though, there’s still plenty of folks out there waiting for their update. For example, T-Mobile UK customers out there with the HTC manufactured Desire? They’re still waiting.

According to T-Mobile UK’s official forum, and from a T-Mobile UK representative, it’s now been confirmed that the Desire won’t be getting the update to Froyo until September. There’s not even a specific date given. Just the generic “next month.” We’re not too surprised — the hang-up had to happen somewhere, some time. Just odd, since Vodafone customers with the same device are probably getting their update this next week. If you’re on T-Mobile, keep your patience cap on. Hopefully it won’t be September 30th or something.

HTC G2 Blaze for T-Mobile Seen on Walmart’s Site

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 01:37 PM PDT

We know that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that T-Mobile is launching the G2. We’ve even seen it in pictures now. But, there’s something odd about Walmart showing it off on their website. We may be speaking for just ourselves here, but seeing a high profile device, especially one as high profile as the G2 “Blaze” here, listed in full glory (without a picture of its own, though), just seems foreign and unnatural.

But, they certainly list it. And they list all of its features, too. For example, if you were to put your hands on the Blaze, you’d notice its 3.7-inch AMOLED display and the landscape slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Playing around with it, you’ll notice it has the Android Operating System with HTC’s Sense User Interface skinned atop it. There’s a 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, and around the back you’ll find a 5MP camera with auto-focus ability.

But, the real feature is that ability to connect to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, which offers up remarkably fast speeds. You’ll also get integrated WiFi, plus the ability to offer your device as a 3G mobile hotspot. It has GPS, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. And, just like the missing picture, they are also missing the price. But, that should turn up soon enough.

Dell Streak Heading to Asia in 2011

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 01:18 PM PDT

The Dell Streak may have been a new commodity here in the States, with a recent roll-out, but it’s been in Europe for a little while now. That doesn’t really help those in Asia-Pacific, though. If you’re in that neck of the woods, and you’ve been eager to get your hands on one, the only real option would be to buy one unlocked in Europe, which also entails the full retail price. But, it may pay off to be a bit patient, as a Dell executive has just provided a little insight into the release of the tablet/MID for that market.

According to Steve Felice, President of Dell’s Small and Medium business unit, the Dell Streak doesn’t have any official plans for a release in Asia right now, but it will soon. In fact, he expects to see the device in Asia by the beginning of 2011. The price and release date, and specific carrier options weren’t mentioned, but considering it was just a phone call with reporters, it’s lucky we got anything at all.

Motorola Droid X for Verizon Gets Android 2.2, Thanks to Leak

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 11:34 AM PDT

We had heard grumblings about it in the community, and now we can safely say that the update to Android 2.2 for the Motorola Droid X is out there, doing its thing. Of course, this isn’t the official update from Verizon, so it’s not an Over the Air (OTA) update, which means if you’re not accustomed to sifting around your device’s inner workings, then you’re probably better off just waiting.

The update to Froyo comes courtesy of Droid World. Thanks to the hard working developers all over the place (you know who you are), the build is ready to go on your new X. The full instructions are through the source link, so if you’re interested in getting the latest build of Android before everyone else (who’s waiting), then take a shot and let us know in the comments how it goes. Or, you could just wait until September, when Verizon’s rumored to release the OTA to everyone else. Your call.
