LG Optimus One and Optimus Chic make Froyo entry-level

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 07:49 AM PDT

LG curiously chose the first day of Nokia World 2010 to launch their latest Android smartphones, the mid-tier LG Optimus One and LG Optimus Chic.  Each handset is based on Froyo, but brings the newest Android OS down to what are likely to be more affordable price points.

The LG Optimus One has a 3.2-inch HVGA display and a 3-megapixel camera, WiFi, LG’s own customized skin and an app which suggests possible downloads from the Android Market.  As for the LG Optimus Chic, that gets DLNA media streaming and cloud-backup of device settings.

The Optimus One will arrive in Europe in October 2010 followed by other EMEA and Asia-Pacific countries; the LG Optimus Chic will be available in Europe in November, with other markets in Asia-Pacific to follow soon after.

Hands-on AT&T’s OpenPeak Android Tablet

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 06:02 PM PDT

Announced earlier this year, the Android running OpenPeak tablet is finally out of the pre-production stages and Slashgear has gotten to give it the hands-on treatment.

Some of the devices specs are still unclear, however the ones we currently know that were released in March are as follows:

  • 1.9GHz Moorestown, Atom-based processor
  • 7-inch multitouch, LED-backlit high-resolution LCD
  • 802.11bgn & Bluetooth 2.1
  • 3G HSDPA (AT&T)
  • Dual cameras (1080p front-facing, 5MP rear)
  • HDMI output
  • microSDHC slot
  • 9.0″W x 5.0″H x .59″D
  • 1.15 lbs.

This tablet has quite a bit of physical buttons that are always appreciated on such a device. The physical buttons include Home, Back, Menu, Power and the volume rocker that is located at the top of the device. Some initial software observations include the keyboard being somewhat cramped, but other than that this looks like a really solid Android based tablet and a real competitor for the iPad market.

Galaxy Tab and 3 New Android Devices part of the AT&T holiday lineup

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 03:40 PM PDT

Engadget just got another AT&T internal leak, this time detailing the carriers lineup for the 2010 holiday season. Among the devices being released for the holiday season, we see the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Galaxy Tab will be Android 2.2 based – even with the apparent lack of support from Google – but it may be an acceptable size for Android 2.2 Froyo.

Engadget also says that along with the Tab we will be seeing 3 new Android devices shipping this year. As always, more details will be coming in the following days so stay tuned.

HTC Droid Incredible for Verizon Shipping with SLCD Displays by End of September

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 01:34 PM PDT

The idea of having your HTC Droid Incredible outfitted with a Super LCD display may not be happy news for most, but it’s the sad truth of the day. After we broke the news that HTC had been forced to work with Sony to produce upcoming Incredible handsets a couple of months back, it looks like the solution has finally arrived, if this new screenshot is any indicator. It’s reportedly a Verizon memo, circulating through their internal servers, and as you can tell from the wording, it looks like SLCD is beginning its roll-out soon.

While the initial announcement said that by “the end of the Summer,” SLCD would be implemented, it looks like Verizon is narrowing that down a bit, and saying that by the end of September, the Incredible will start shipping with the new display. Removing the AMOLED display, which is manufactured by Samsung and has been hit with a major shortage, means that some folks may opt for other handsets. Even if HTC backs the idea that SLCD is just as color-rich and vibrant as AMOLED.

One very key thing to mention here: at the very bottom of the memo, you’ll notice that if you’ve got yourself an Incredible with an AMOLED display, and you need to get it replaced for whatever reason, you’ll get an Incredible back with the AMOLED display — not an SLCD-based device.

Android users are more likely to click in-app advertisements according to Nielsen.

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 12:48 PM PDT

Love them or hate them, in-app advertisements are a great way for developers to fund their work and allowing their applications to be listed as free or at a low price. Many companies have tried to make them more immersive in hopes of getting more clicks. Apple did this with it's newly released iAd platform, and results have been less than promising so far with low cost App Store ads proven to not be cost effective. However, according to a new report, released by the Nielsen Company, Android users are topping the charts of clicks, with one third of them having clicked an in-app ad.

This is compared to the other mobile operating systems: 29% with Windows Mobile, 26% with Apple's iOS, Palm at 22%, BlackBerry with 15% and all other operating systems averaging 24%.

Nielsen also goes on to state that they have found that ratings and reviews are useful in deciding which titles consumers select. When surveyed, 18% of all downloaders said that ratings and reviews are "extremely important" in their decision making process. Following with 36% saying they are "very important" and 34%, "somewhat important".
