Sprint Challenges Developers to Create Innovative 4G Apps

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 10:34 AM PDT

Sprint has recently started a competition to find some of the best apps that utilize their "ultra fast" 4G network. With 5 categories: Multimedia, Gaming, Productivity, Social, and Entertainment, apps will be placed for judging by an all-star panel of judges from companies such as Sprint itself, WIRED, and ars technica.

The winner of each category will receive a price pack with the following:

  • $50,000 cash
  • 1 year PDP Membership
  • 250 hours for Virtual Developer Lab
  • HTC EVO 4G device with 1 year service

This looks very promising and will, at the very least, spark interest in developers to create innovative, intuitive, and new apps for the Android platform in the coming months. For further details or if you are an interested developer you can register at the information site here.

The Categories

  • Video, Multimedia, & Augmented Reality:
    • As mobile devices begin to incorporate increasingly powerful cameras
and video processors, the demand for apps that utilize hardware in new
and exciting ways continues to grow. From augmented reality programs
that put arresting animation in a user’s palm to live video streaming and video editing, this is the category for apps that push the outer limits of today's mobile video capabilities.
  • Games:
    • This is the quest for the very best brainteasers, puzzles, battles, races, matches and more. From tech savvy designs that push hardware to the max to mind-bending quizzes that build brainpower, winning the gaming category will require a truly unique offering that will captivate and engage audiences for hours on end.
  • Productivity, Business, & Utilities:
    • Does the app make today's business warrior faster, leaner and smarter? Will it help burgeoning entrepreneurs cut crucial corners to maximize potential profits? Maybe it's a key utility that will elegantly organize files for simple mobile browsing. The idea here is to undermined business schools everywhere and put powerful tools and tricks in the hands of forward-thinking executives.
  • Social Networking:
    • Staying dialed in to friends' perpetual digital updates while on the go is an increasingly fragmented endeavor. As social networks flourish and increase in scope and size, it's more necessary than ever to have a solid app or two that can easily manage the ups and downs of your feeds, photo albums and micro-manifestos.
  • Entertainment:

    • If it's an app that can quench a thirst for celebrity gossip updates, dynamically create customized streaming playlists of today's hottest pop tunes or figure out the perfect algorithm for conquering the next fantasy football showdown, this is the category. For all the fun apps that don't quite jive with one of the other groupings, this is the catchall category.

Taiwan component makers hint towards HTC Android 3.0 tablet, coming early 2011

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 09:45 AM PDT

According to Taiwan based component makers, it looks like HTC is planning on releasing a tablet in the first quarter of 2011. This tablet is rumored to be equipped with Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) and with HTC's already strong ties to Google, it may just be one of the first devices to launch with the software which is currently expected this winter.

The report from Digitimes reads, "For marketing tablet PCs, HTC will have an advantage thanks to its strong ties with Google and established cooperation with mobile telecom carriers around the world, the sources pointed out, adding that if the performance and quality of the new device is on par with its smartphones, continuous support from these strategic partners is expected,"

This is the second currently unconfirmed rumor of an upcoming Android tablet from HTC. The first rumor was that HTC is currently developing a Chrome OS based tablet that will ship this coming November on Black Friday. Only time will tell with these tablet rumors, but if all of the upcoming Android tablet rumors are true, we will definitely start seeing Android surpassing Apple in tablet market share in the coming years.

Laputa bringing realistic eBook reading to Android

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 08:24 AM PDT

Ebooks are becoming more and more popular as we move even further into the all digital age. While many argue the experience of reading an actual physical book is far greater than reading it on a mobile device or Kindle, many people have an extensive library of books they like to read and it's a hassle to carry them around. Solving this, a new eBooks app Laputa, is trying to bring the experience of reading an actual book to Android devices featuring page turning animations and a colorful shelf-like user interface similar to that of Apple's popular iBooks.

Laputa can read almost any book in the ePub format. You can import your own books (DRM free) or browse their vast collection in their online catalog which sources from popular eBook sites such as Feedbooks, Blazer, ManyBooks and Gutenburg.

After using Laputa you soon realize what a great experience it really offers. The UI is snappy and stunning, the book collection is pretty extensive and it comes with a lot of features that have been missing on Android eBook readers for some time now.

Some of the key features of Laputa:

Fingertip’s Library

Want to read the books? Just move your fingers to click the books on the shelf, then you can enjoy the colorful worlds in the books. It is just like your own bookshelf!

Online store composed of website sources:

In the internal websites there are thousands of free books, and you can search and download those you like.

Day/Night Mode:

Switch between Day/Night mode, thus making your eyes more comfortable. A built-in LED reading light gives you the ability to read at night or other low-light situations without bothering others around you.

Flip effect:
Flipping makes your mobile reading just like reading a paperback with the page turn effect. And if you are tired of it, you can turn off it or change to another flip pattern.

Import Your Own Books:
Import your own ePub books or documents directly into the reader

Laputa is currently free and a paid (no advertisements) version is in on the way.

HTC launches Desire HD and Desire Z: we go hands-on

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 06:57 AM PDT

As expected, HTC launched their new Desire HD and Desire Z at an event in London today, the company’s latest European Android smartphones.  Both packing UMTS/HSPA, the Desire HD basically scales up a regular Desire with a 4.3-inch display and 8-megapixel camera, while the Desire Z gets a flip-out QWERTY keyboard and 5-megapixel camera.

Both run Froyo 2.2 with HTC’s new version of HTC Sense; that has a new companion site, HTCSense.com, from which users can remotely track and wipe their smartphone, make it play a ringtone loudly (to help you find it when it’s lost down the back of the couch) and even see backups of all recent SMS and email conversations.  The transfer is two-way, too, allowing you to squirt information (such as directions) back to the phone from the online interface.

HTC Desire HD live:

Both devices use full metal cases, with HTC eschewing a full battery cover and instead going for a pop-off hatch as with the HTC Legend.  Each gets 1.5GB of onboard storage and a WVGA display, dualband UMTS/HSPA, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack, AGPS/GPS and 720p HD recording.

HTC Desire Z live:

For our hands-on impressions, check out the articles over at SlashGear for the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z.

HTC Sense integrates a variety of multimedia and location-based enhancements and introduces HTCSense.com, a series of new connected HTC services

LONDON, UK – September 15, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today unveiled a new HTC Sense experience with the new HTC Desire HDTM and HTC Desire ZTM Android-based smartphones. The new HTC Sense experience continues HTC's strong focus on the customer, placing people at the center by simply making its phones work in a more personal and natural way. HTC Sense introduces a number of key innovations including a series of connected services called HTCSense.com that enhance people's mobile experience on HTC phones.
"We're excited to be taking the HTC Sense experience beyond the phone to a whole new level with a series of connected HTC services we call HTCSense.com," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. T-Mobile G2 specs get detailed by HTC

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 12:07 AM PDT

The T-Mobile G2 has gained an HTC product page, and as such a full run-down of its specifications – which so far the carrier itself has proved reluctant to reveal.  We now know for sure that the G2 does indeed use Qualcomm’s 800MHz MSM7230 processor, along with 4GB ROM, 512 MB RAM, GPS/aGPS and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash.

The standard battery is a 1,300mAh pack which HTC reckon would be good for up to 400 minutes of WCDMA talktime or up to 590 minutes of GSM.  Meanwhile standby would be up to 430 hours for WCDMA or up to 430 hours for GSM.  The whole thing measures in at 119mm (L) x 60.4mm (W) x 14.16mm (T), and weighs 180g with battery pack.

MOTOROLA DEVOUR now free from Verizon

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 07:24 PM PDT

The nearing "end-of-life" Motorola Devour is now free from Verizon.com with a new 2-year activation plan. The Motorola Devour runs Motoblur and it's really the only Verizon device with the software. Some of it’s key features include a 3.1″ touchscreen, integrated social network features, and 3.0 megapixel camera.

Although they may be clearing the shelves and securing some 2-year contracts in the process, this is still a great opportunity to get a solid Android phone for free, nothing is better than free – Right? However it does require a data plan of $29.99 to qualify for the offer and get the phone for free.

Droid Does Website Leaks Droid X 2.2 Update Information

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 04:13 PM PDT

Well it looks like what we knew was coming is now semi-official. The popular Droid Does website that Verizon Wireless itself pushes updates to has now been seen to have prematurely released a splash page detailing "great news" that is the 2.2 update for the Droid X.

The page itself was updated on the 10th of September hinting that the release could be just around the corner. Of course, as with most things Verizon we will have to wait and find out for ourselves. Hopefully soon Droid X users will be getting all of the great features 2.2 brings on their (gigantic?) phones.

Verizon plans to introduce it’s own app store to compete with Android Market

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 12:46 PM PDT

Verizon is in the press again, the first time being their Bing ordeal last week, with another bold move. This time the popular wireless carrier is sending letters to developers stating that they are going to be releasing their own V Cast App Store on the Android Platform despite the fact that the Android Market features a V Cast Apps tab on Verizon devices.

Although many are questioning the need for a second app store or the motivation behind Verizon in creating one, this is clearly going to be direct competition with the Android Market. Verizon is currently luring developers with promises such as no testing fees, carrier billing and fast approval, which for some developers are very attractive options.

The full letter that was sent to developers is below:
What do you think about a second App Store on Verizon Android devices?

“Dear Developer,Verizon Wireless has opened Android submissions for V CAST Apps! We are preparing to launch V CAST Apps across our industry-leading lineup of Android handsets, and we want to give you the opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

As you know, merchandising your Android app through other channels can be a challenge, this is how V CAST Apps can make a difference to you:

Why submit your Android applications to the V CAST App Store?

It's Free – No Testing Fees
It's Fast – Our Goal is to place your application in the App Store within 14 days of Submission
Abbreviated Click-Thru Agreement
Carrier Billing – Your applications are billed directly to the Customer's Bill; No credit cards, PayPal, etc.
70/30 Revenue Share – 70% Developer / 30% Verizon
Hands-on, Experienced Content Programming Team – Get the visibility you deserve, not just a quality-crushing algorithm!
Content Programming and Store continuity across multiple platforms (BlackBerry & Android)
Integration with Network API's! Messaging & aGPS
Detailed submission guides online and forums monitored by our support staff
Subscription Billing – Coming Soon!

If you have not done so already, please go to http://developer.verizon.com/ today and register now in order to receive updates.

Once registered, you can start submitting your applications today!

We currently utilize a (2) step process for ingesting developer content:

Step #1 Application Concept Submission:

An application concept is simply a high-level description of your application so that Verizon may approve the content for sale within our catalog. Certain information, such as developer contact info and screenshots are for our review purposes only and will not be published to the end-user. You will have the opportunity, during the binary submission phase, to submit end-user screenshots, generic contact information and pricing. Application concepts must be approved before you can submit your binaries. Additionally, you will be notified at each step of the review process, giving you full visibility into our approval system. If you have already submitted a concept for the same application for BlackBerry, please resubmit another concept for Android to ensure expedient approval.

Step #2 Binary Submission:

Once an application concept has been moved to the "Approved" status, you can submit your binaries for your Android app. We perform basic testing at this time, and once approved we publish to our catalog.
Binary submission will open for Incredible, Droid 1 and Droid X on September 1st.
V CAST Apps will be deployed on Android OS 2.2 (FroYo) only for now, so please ensure your binaries are compatible. We will not be rolling V CAST Apps out to earlier versions of the Android OS. When additional OS's are supported, you will have the option to submit by both device and OS, but for now 2.2 is the standard.

Questions:

If you have any questions, that have not been answered or published in our Dev. Center, please go to our forums http://developer.verizon.com/forum/forums/list.page. Our forums have 100′s of posts from developers that are actively monitored by our support staff.

As we are heads-down preparing for Android launch, we apologize if you have already received this or a similar communication. We look forward to your participation in the Verizon Developer Community!

All the best,
V CAST Apps Team
Verizon Wireless”

Latest Adobe Flash exploit puts Android Devices at risk.

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 11:38 AM PDT

The critical zero day flaw in Adobe Flash which Adobe revealed this week has been confirmed to be able to target Android phones and devices. This is the second exploit in just a week that is currently able to infect the Android platform. So far this is proving to be a very widespread cross-platform vulnerability that is currently actively being exploited against Flash Player.

This critical flaw can infect a users handset and exploit it to crash the system. It also has the potential to allow the attacker to gain access and remotely control the device to execute addition malicious software that will further compromise the device.

Android is not the only device targeted, an Adobe spokesperson has sated that, "A critical vulnerability exists in Adobe Flash Player 10.1.82.76 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Solaris and Android operating systems. This vulnerability also affects Adobe Reader 9.3.4 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat 9.3.4 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh.” All of these platforms being potential targets make this exploit even more attractive for attackers to utilize so it's best that you are alert with your mobile device, have a mobile security firewall or app, and finally be sure to update when one is provided.
