| Alan Sugar says he was “way ahead” of the Apple iPlayer [sic] Posted: 06 Sep 2010 09:35 AM PDT
Sir Alan Sugar, in a mini Facebook interview about the Penpad, said: “The Amstrad Penpad was the PDA I launched in 1993… I dumped it… Talk about too soon for its day is putting it mildly… A few years later the American company Palm came out with one and then went on to sell multi millions worldwide and of course now you have the Apple iPhone or IPlayers.” Yep, those Apple iPlayers are selling really well. Icing on the cake of that technological mess of a statement (dear press people, where were you?!), is the following, where Sugar said: “Moral of the story is you never stop learning.” Glad to see you never stopped learning Sir Alan, about new products and things like that. Let’s not forget that we can read more of these missives (presumably subbed into boring factually correct prose) in Sir Alan Sugar’s book, which he reliably informs us before signing of from the Facepages and heading back to his Tooter followers. | Bye Bye Brain: gorgeous Windows Phone 7 game glimpsed Posted: 06 Sep 2010 09:28 AM PDT
Developer Ricardo Acosta has posted a video preview of Bye Bye Brain on Vimeo. We've embedded it below so you can check out the loveliness for yourself. The game itself is a zombie-killing tower defence title that has you place ghoul-slaying people instead of towers, all in beautiful 3D.
Bye Bye Brain, Windows Phone 7 Game from riacosta on Vimeo. It seems like Windows Phone 7 can really deliver the goods when it comes to graphics, so we're looking forward seeing more upcoming games – as well as getting to grips with Bye Bye Brain as soon as it launches. | Windows Phone 7 video: first UK ad airs Posted: 06 Sep 2010 09:01 AM PDT
If you have been wondering what Microsoft’s $1 Billion marketing spend for the Windows Phone 7 launch was actually going to pay for, the first ad for the new mobile phone platform has appeared. Shown during a Secret Cinema screening of Lawrence of Arabia, the ad shows a desert landscape with a dark shape approaching from the horizon, blurry and indistinct in the heat haze. Is it Peter O’Toole, galloping out of the sun? Er, no. It is a generic looking, unbranded Windows Phone 7 Series handset which is.. sort of floating towards us. The Windows Phone 7 device displays the words ‘The Revolution is coming..” in a vaguely Arabic script, then we get to see a little bit of the Windows Phone 7 user interface – complete with a picture of a sleeping cat. We’re not sure if this ad will ever make its way to the small screen or if it was a one-off made for the Secret Cinema showing (Windows Phone 7 is a sponsor of Secret Cinema’s themed movie events) so if you want to see what the revolution supposedly looks like, check out the clip below.. | Dyson Air Multiplier: fakes for £50 cheaper than the real thing Posted: 06 Sep 2010 08:50 AM PDT
A spokesperson for Dyson said: "The Dyson Air Multiplier fans were launched in 2009 after four years of research and development. A team of specialist Dyson engineers have refined and patented the technology: Illegal copies are of inferior quality. Dyson rigorously defends its intellectual property and treats any infringement very seriously. Dyson takes legal action against anyone who copies its technology." Abiko, the company who is also offering an Android tablet for under £100, was showing off its copycat to the Dyson Air Multiplier AM01 at Comex 2010 in Singapore. Should Dyson weigh in and put the legal boot in, or does this sort of copycat manufacturing come with the territory with a strong brand like Dyson? Related posts:

| Panasonic Toughbooks F5, S9 and N9 upgraded in Japan Posted: 06 Sep 2010 08:43 AM PDT
All three Panasonic Toughbook models now feature a 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 560M processor as standard, with the option to upgrade to an even beefier 2.8GHz Core i7 640M before purchase. The Toughbook S9, N9 and F5 also sport 4GB of RAM, upgradeable to 8GB. A standard 500GB hard drive is included on all three Panasonic Toughbooks (a 640GB hard drive or 256GB SSD available are both available as options), alongside 802.11n Wi-Fi, WiMAX (well, it is Japan), Windows 7 Professional and a new battery delivering a claimed 14.5 hours of on-the-go use. The new Panasonic Toughbooks are hitting Japanese stores soon (in black, red or black and white finishes), but we don't have confirmation of a UK launch or pricing. | Elonex eTouch 1000ET looks way too much like an iPad Posted: 06 Sep 2010 08:08 AM PDT Look, we realise that by nature of only having a screen and not much else, it’s difficult for Android tablets not to look like the iPad, but the Elonex eTouch 1000ET really is a bit too familiar. Is anybody’s intellectual property infringement sense tingling? Just look at that home button with a square on it! Should you be interested, the Elonex eTouch 1000ET packs a 1GHz processor, 10.1-inch 1024×600 resistive touchscreen, 2GB of internal memory and Android 2.1. And there’s a USB port, micro SD card slot and 3.5mm headphone socket on the sides. It’s actually out this month for £149, which might just make it worth a second look: we’ll be scouring one out rest assured. Related posts:

| Apple iLife 11 appears on Amazon Posted: 06 Sep 2010 08:03 AM PDT
Despite no official announcement from Cupertino, the iLife 11 Family Pack has appeared for pre-order on Amazon.com. In fact, it apparently popped up on the site as far back as July 27th, with a price tag of $99 (around £65) attached. The shipping time is listed as "2 to 4 weeks", suggesting that iLife 11 could be due on sale before the end of September. Of course, without Apple actually announcing it, we can't be sure that iLife 11 is coming soon, or indeed coming at all – Apple may decide to name it something else. But it seems to fit, time-wise, and we'd imagine iWork 11 won't be too far behind. Out TBC | £TBC | Apple (via TUAW) Related posts:

| X Factor game coming in October Posted: 06 Sep 2010 07:45 AM PDT
As if weeks of audition shows, ITV2 spinoffs and all-round tabloid assault were not enough, X Factor fans will soon be able to get the complete 360 Simon Cowell experience when Deep Silver releases The X Factor next month. Players will create their own would-be popstar and guide them through singing challenges in venues themed around the show’s different stages – auditions, bootcamp, cringe-inducing performances at the judge’s homes and finally the live TV shows. 28 hits are available to be ruined/reinterpreted by the players, including tracks by Pixie Lott, Lady Gaga and U2. A party mode lets you forget about the competition side of things and just murder a few tunes with your friends. No word on whether the virtual judges will ‘fall out’ with each other in a pre-scripted cut-scene.. just like they do on the show. Out October 29th | £tbc | X Factor Related posts:

| New iPod touch camera less than a megapixel – but do you mind? Posted: 06 Sep 2010 07:33 AM PDT
Personally this particular tech hack was salivating at the thought of a new iPod touch with an iPhone 4-esque 5MP camera. I'm not an iPhone 4 user but I'm a huge fan of its camera, and the idea of being able to carry a point-and-shoot snapper that good inside my iPod is incredibly appealing. Sadly, the new iPod touch's back camera sensor is designed for video first and stills a distant second: at just 960 x 720 pixels, it's less than a megapixel in size. The new iPod touch is THIN, and that means there isn't room for the iPhone 4's camera chip. Also, Apple probably surmised that the added cost of a 5MP camera would put off some potential buyers – people that already own a decent pocket-sized digital camera and don't fancy shelling out for a feature they don't need. So what do you think? Has Apple missed a trick by keeping the new iPod touch back camera so underpowered? Let us know in the comments section below. Out this week | From £189 | Apple Related posts:

| Catfish: the alternative Facebook film Posted: 06 Sep 2010 07:20 AM PDT
Catfish has been shown at Sundance, and is due for release (through Universal) in the US and UK in a week and a half on September 17. It’s the story of a mid-20s photographer who embarks on a Facebook relationship with someone he’s never met. The situation escalates, and eventually, a visit to see this long distance girlfriend ends in disaster as she is not who she says she is. Sounds predictable doesn’t it? One look at the trailer should at least go half way to convincing you otherwise… [via TechCrunch] Related posts:
