Tron: Evolution hands on preview, playing the Tron: Legacy prequel! Posted: 29 Sep 2010 08:15 AM PDT Like any modern sci-fi epic, Tron: Legacy comes with its own tie-in game titles. We got hands on with the Xbox and PS3 game, Tron: Legacy, on the same day we took a peek at the Tron: Legacy light cycle. Tron: Evolution acts a prequel to Tron: Legacy and if you're a fan of Prince of Persia or Assassin's Creed, this is going to be right up your street… In Tron: Evolution, you play a security program battling a virus which has invaded the virtual world and is threatening to destroy it. The game acts a bridge between the world depicted in 1982's Tron and the evolved version depicted in Tron: Legacy, filling in the back story and featuring both Quora (a badass female character with a major role in the new film) and Jeff Bridges as Flynn. ![]() The similarities with Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed come in the use of parkour. Your character spends large portions of the game running up walls and hurling himself across vast chasms. The control system is context specific and combat makes use of the loop kicking (a mix of martial arts and acrobatics) seen in the Tron: Legacy trailer. Your weapon in Tron: Evolution is a Tron disc with four different versions to choose from throughout the game as well as energy burst power ups and special moves. Like Assassin's Creed, Tron: Evolution lets you string together a series of moves to create special attacks. The enemies you face in Tron: Evolution are colour coded. Attacking them strips energy from them. If you allow them to swarm and score hits on you, your energy is drained. We found the battles to be fluid and almost balletic at times. The visuals in Tron: Evolution are stunning, making use of the same black on black aesthetic as the film but expanding the locations beyond Tron City to other areas of the world not covered by the movie. Using 3D models of the buildings from the film and 3D character scans means that Tron: Evolution will act as a great companion to the cinema release. The Tron: Evolution level we played featured disc-based combat and an appearance by Quora trying to infiltrate a restricted area but other parts of the game feature Tron light cycle racing (see our Tron: Legacy light cycle video for some secrets) and other vehicles including the light tank. Those elements will be particularly fun in the 10 player multiplayer mode which we haven’t managed to get our hands on yet. Tron: Evolution breaks cover on December 7, 10 days before Tron: Legacy is due in cinemas. The developers, Propaganda Games Vancouver say that's so you can explore the prequel before seeing the new film. The PS3 version of Tron: Evolution will come packing support for the PlayStation Move and 3D gaming but Xbox gamers won't be able to use Kinect. We'll bring you a Tron: Evolution review soon but in the meantime, hit the comments and let us know what you make of the preview. Are you itching to dive into the grid? Or is Tron one retro revival too many? Out December 7 | £TBC | Tron: Evolution Related posts:

26 per cent of you felt the same as us, and wanted better signal from an iPhone 5, and 24 per cent wanted the iPhone 5 to be slimmer and lighter than the current iPhone 4. ![]() Among the open ended answers you gave were a plethora of good ideas for the iPhone 5, many of which you'd already expect in a top end device. Some of you wanted a 64GB iPhone 5 – which raises the question of expandable storage: why hasn’t Apple added a MicroSD slot? Others wanted a bigger screen in the iPhone 5 – a wish perhaps fuelled by the HTC Desire HD? Bluetooth capabilities were also mentioned. Some of you also pointed out that there's still no sign of the white iPhone 4 – could this scupper any hopes for a white iPhone 5 in the future, or will Apple be overhauling the manufacturing process for next time? Improvements to the camera in the imaginary iPhone 5 included upping the megapixel count, adding a physical shutter button, and an image stabiliser. Ten per cent of you said that after all the hoo-ha with the iPhone 4, and the way that Apple dealt with the problem, you wouldn't be going back to an Apple iPhone, and it had been enough to turn you off to Jobs and his 'magical' devices. The key thing we noticed from the iPhone 5 wishlist you helped us build is that most of what was suggested was not ‘out there’ stuff, but things that are available in other devices as standard, such as expandable storage and Bluetooth. Next time around, Apple will have some real competition in the likes of HTC and Samsung smartphones and potentially, Windows Phone 7 devices too. What do you think? Is Apple losing its lead? HP confirms Palmpad name? iPad rival secrets spilled! Posted: 29 Sep 2010 06:01 AM PDT
Earnings calls are often a good source of info on new products as loose-lipped executives get caught off-guard. During a call with a gaggle of analysts (we're not actually clear on that collective noun), HP Executive Vice-President Todd Bradley dropped the PalmPad name into conversation: "We've already announced the expansion of our future product portfolio well beyond smartphones. We'll have a webOS-powered PalmPad that will be set for release early in 2011." ![]() The PalmPad monicker was spotted in an HP trademark filing earlier this year but that's the first time an executive has used it in public. It certainly looks like it's a goer but as we saw with the Blackberry Playbook, codenames can easily change. Bradley also confirmed during the call that HP has shipped 200 employees over to Palm to work on the PalmPad project. Hopefully that means we'll be able to get to see the fruits of their labours soon. What do you reckon? Is PalmPad the right name for HP's first webOS tablet? Or do you have a better name to propose for the as-yet-unseen iPad rival? Out TBC | £TBC | HP (via PalmCentral) Related posts:

Bose Lifestyle 235 Home Entertainment System Posted: 29 Sep 2010 05:50 AM PDT Alongside the fanfare for its Bose VideoWave soundsystem-in-a-telly Bose has also launched the Bose Lifestyle 235, a 2.1 home entertainment system made up of an head unit, subwoofer, iPod dock and dinky speaker arrays, and while it’s not quite as exciting as the Bose VideoWave, it gives out great sound for such a small bundle, if you can afford to shell out.
The Bose Lifestyle 235 also has Unify, the Bose software for setting up and syncing, which means source devices such as Blu-ray or set top boxes can be connected to the Bose Lifestyle 235 remote to control everything from one place. It’s also got AdaptiQ, which analyses the room’s acoustics and calibrates the sound accordingly to get the best out of your system without too much faffing. It’s a reasonably neat package, with the only caveat being, as with the Bose VideoWave, the price tag, which sits at a rathey hefty £3,000. Out 1 Oct | £3,000 | Bose Related posts:

Vodafone Android Pay As You Go phones incoming! Posted: 29 Sep 2010 04:04 AM PDT
While we can’t confirm what models exactly could be sold upfront, a browse through the network’s portfolio suggests that the HTC Wildfire, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and the Vodafone 845 could all be likely candidates, sold as they are on cheaper contracts. This is good news, as T-Mobile and Orange have been selling Android phones for Pay As You Go for a long time, and Vodafone’s insistence on making customers sign up to a two year contract for a cheap smartphone like the 845 – and previously the HTC Tattoo – has caused us to complain on more than one occasion. Stay tuned, we’ll have more for you on Vodafone’s Android PAYG plans shortly. Out TBC | £TBC | Vodafone Related posts:
