T-Mobile G2 getting OTA Update Bringing WiFi Calling and Tethering Posted: 12 Oct 2010 11:13 AM PDT Word is that users are reportedly being pushed an OTA update for the T-Mobile G2. The update is being said to include WiFi calling capabilities as well as bringing USB Tethering and Portable WiFi Hotspot features to the device. ![]() As of now it doesn't seem the update is widespread, yet. Only a few users have actually been pushed the update, but if this is meant to be a mass OTA update, we can expect other users to be getting it over the coming days. ![]() Do you have a G2? Have you received the update? Let us know! [Via XDA-Developers] ) |
HTC Merge Early Hands On [Video] Posted: 12 Oct 2010 11:05 AM PDT The HTC Merge, which still has not been officially announced for Verizon Wireless, has been caught on video. This time, AndroidCentral has gotten some personal time with the device and did a quick walkthrough of the hardware and the software of the device. ![]() Bing is present in the software, as expected, and is integrated throughout like many of Verizon's lineup of DROID devices. As of now it's loaded with Android 2.2, and the typical Verizon suite of applications. However, it does not come preinstalled with the latest version of HTC Sense, but that may be coming before the device launches, whenever that may be. [Via AndroidCentral] ) |
Froyo coming to MyTouch 3G Tomorrow Posted: 12 Oct 2010 10:56 AM PDT Users of the myTouch 3G have been long awaiting the arrival of Froyo on their device. It looks like all of their patience will pay off tomorrow as the 2.2 Update will start being pushed over the air. ![]() The process will be staggered, as usual, and updates will roll out over the next couple weeks until October 24th when all devices should have been pushed the update. Many users have probably moved on to a more recent device, but for those of you who waited, your patience is now being rewarded. *Note: This is only for the original myTouch 3G, Users of the myTouch 3G 3.5mm jack, myTouch Fender Limited Edition, and myTouch 3G slide will have to wait a bit longer. Samsung Responds Quickly to “Porn” button on the Galaxy Tab Posted: 12 Oct 2010 09:38 AM PDT Last week we covered an embarrassing mistake in the Samsung Tab OS department that mistakenly labeled the devices home button as "Porn." The actual button wasn't a random error, "Porn" was actually short for "Pornie" which means Home in Romanian. ![]()
The device was headed to Romania, and that's when the screenshots leaked. A few hours ago @SamsungMobileRo took the issue to twitter stating that from now on the Home button will be named 'Acasa' to avoid any further misunderstandings.
A happy ending to a funny misunderstanding. Samsung sure did a great job with it's time to explanation and then the time to the actual fix. [Via TheNextWeb] ) |
Sony Google TV developer registration opens Posted: 12 Oct 2010 08:05 AM PDT Sony has opened up registration for developers keen to create Android apps suitable for its upcoming Google TV sets. According to the site, Sony “will be providing registered members with exciting news for the Sony Internet TV very soon.” Last we heard, Sony was preparing four HDTVs with integrated Google TV functionality, ranging from 24- to 46-inches. The full announcement is expected later on today. [via Twitter] ) |
Samsung Galaxy Tab on sale in Germany for €799 Posted: 12 Oct 2010 07:51 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy Tab has apparently gone on sale in Germany, with an RRP of €799 for the unlocked, SIM-free version of the Froyo slate. The tablet is available now, according to the press release. Meanwhile there’s also the confirmation that the Galaxy Tab’s DLNA streaming functionality can be used with the Samsung Media Gateway WMG160, quietly announced at the same time as the Galaxy S smartphone. Advent Vega specs revealed: HDMI, SIM slot & more [Video] Posted: 12 Oct 2010 07:39 AM PDT Full specifications for the Advent Vega Tegra 2 tablet expected to drop at UK retailers PC World and Currys for just £249 have emerged. MoDaCo received both the OEM spec sheet and the retailer’s version, and turned up a few interesting tidbits not included in the official press release. Of note are the HDMI connector, four-finger multitouch support and integrated SIM card slot (though, with no mention of an actual 3G modem, we’re guessing you’d have to supply your own); the battery life is also impressive. The Vega is expected to hit retail on October 18th. Click here to view the embedded video.

Analysts says Android tablets will sell better than iPad Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:42 AM PDT It’s interesting to me that Google is telling many iPad makers to not launch tablets with the current version of Android. Many are still bringing tablets to market with the current version of Android that Google says isn’t appropriate.
Despite the fact that the iPad is selling like crazy, analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray has stated that he expects that tablets are the next big thing in computing and that Android will be the most popular OS on tablets, not the iOS running iPad. That will be a big change from the current market with the iPad as one of the only available tablet offerings. One of the reasons Android tablets are expected to outsell the iPad is that there will be a number of offerings in different price points and with different performance capabilities. With the basic iPad selling for about $500 now many will certainly opt for a lower performance Android tablet at around the $199 price point we have been seeing. The prediction by Munster makes sense. ) |
Report claims iOS is ahead of Android in Enterprise Activations Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:34 AM PDT A new report from software firm called Good Technology has stoked the flames of the rivalry between iOS on the iPhone and Android devices. There have been many conflicting reports recently that have claimed one OS or the other is ahead of the other in usage. The back and forth is confusing for many.
The new report claims that the iOS iPhone is ahead of Android in enterprise activations for the Good Technology messaging software. According to Good Technology 56% of new activations form June to September for its mobile messaging and device management software were for iOS devices. Over the same period, the company says that Android accounted for 28% of its new activations. At the far end of the spectrum, Windows Mobile smartphones had 15% of the new activations for the software. Good Software did mention that it expected the coming Android tablets to change things a bit in the market. ) |
ZTE V9 Android tablet revealed Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:34 AM PDT ZTE may not be the best known brand around, but as a sizeable OEM supplier they put a whole lot of mobile gadgets into peoples’ hands. That’s why we don’t doubt the new ZTE V9 tablet will show up in more than a few places; the Android 2.1 slate has a 7-inch touchscreen, integrated 3G and WiFi. On the back there’s a 3-megapixel camera, and another camera up-front for video calls. ZTE aren’t saying exactly what specs the V9 will have when it launches, but they have made a few tweaks to the Android UI to suit the bigger display. No word on release dates or pricing. ![]() ![]() ![]() [via Chinitech] ) |
Oracle-IBM pact could have serious implications for Android Posted: 12 Oct 2010 06:13 AM PDT
That project is an open source implementation of Android that was reportedly created under the Apache Software foundation. Most of that code was penned by IBM workers with Harmony project as a focus for IBM. The new deal with IBM and Oracle means that all those IBM workers will now be writing with a direction towards OpenJDK, which is Oracle’s personal implementation of Java. Some major figures in Harmony project are already saying the whole works will go under shortly. What that will mean for Android is the real question when all those devs working for IBM jump ship. ) |
Google WalkyTalky and Intersection Explorer aid vision-impaired Android users Posted: 12 Oct 2010 03:05 AM PDT Two Android apps intended for assisting blind or partially-sighted users are getting some attention of late, with Google’s WalkyTalky and Intersection Explorer both being praised for their useful functionality. WalkyTalky basically hooks into Google Maps navigation engine, but gives directions in spoken rather than just on-screen instructions. It also reads out the street names you should be passing, so as to help users keep track of where they’re walking. Intersection Explorer, meanwhile, allows users to preview their journey in a Street View style UI, complete with audio prompts as to which roads are being passed. While that might not sound like much, it allows partially-sighted users to rehearse routes and thus feel more comfortable on their journey. Both apps are free downloads. We quite like the idea of using WalkyTalky with headphones for more comprehensive audio-only navigation; there are plenty of times when whipping out your expensive Android smartphone doesn’t seem like a great idea. Notion Ink demo prototype Adam, confirm 1GB RAM [Video] Posted: 12 Oct 2010 02:45 AM PDT We’ll seldom argue with a new Notion Ink Adam update, and having promised prototype news they’ve delivered with some tooling samples hot off the production line in China. There’s also a new video of one of the prototypes in action, together with the confirmation that Adam will have 1GB of DDRII 667MHz memory. Meanwhile they’ve been testing their speaker system – which benefits from the unusual curved side-profile of the Adam slate, putting the speakers on either end of the battery bulge – and it’s apparently good enough to fill a conference room. We’re hoping to see more of Eden, the Notion Ink multitasking system, soon too. Click here to view the embedded video. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
LEGO MINDroid turns Android into a Mindstorm NXT remote Posted: 12 Oct 2010 02:04 AM PDT We love LEGO and we love Android, and it seems there’s plenty of love between the two companies as well. LEGO has just launched MINDroid for Android, a remote control app allowing users to operate their Mindstorm NXT robots from their smartphone.
We’ve seen Android devices used to remotely control Mindstorms kits before, but not via an official app. The LEGO MINDroid app is a free download for Android 2.1 devices or higher, and is available in the Android Market now. [via GigaOm] ) |
T-Mobile G2 Only $99 from Amazon Posted: 11 Oct 2010 11:14 PM PDT Regardless of some recent controversy regarding the root issues, as well as build issues. But still, the G2 is one of the most impressive, full featured phones on the market. To make things even better, it's only $99 from Amazon.com. ![]() The offer extends to new T-Mobile customers and comes with, as always, a 2-year contract. The $99 even includes two-day shipping so you aren't left without everything that is the G2 for long. You can check availability and make a purchase over at Amazon.com right now. ) |
BuzzVoice update: App is now Free on Android market Posted: 11 Oct 2010 06:47 PM PDT The people over at BuzzVoice have just announced that their application is now free to download on the Android market. With this new update comes the feature of being able to add your own feeds instead of limiting your device to what’s only available on their lists. For those who havn’t experienced BuzzVoice, it’s a RSS reader that reads the news to you. This is very useful when one is walking, driving or just doesn’t feel like reading.
Another great feature is the ability to add a widget to your home screen to control the app and an “Android Radio” station which reads news from most major Android sites. I highly recommend checking out the app since its very useful and if money is no obstacle to you there is a “pro” version as well which is ad-free version and is also on sale for $.99 right now so take advantage of it! ) |
Samsung launches the Galaxy K with Android 2.2 Posted: 11 Oct 2010 06:26 PM PDT While everyone else in the world has been playing around with their Galaxy S on their respective carrier, Samsung’s South Korea has gotten its own version of the Galaxy S. The phone is called the Galaxy K, a phone with similar features as its counterpart in the USA.
The main difference is that this phone will be the first to come shipped with Android 2.2. It will run with Flash 10.1 on the 3.7-inch AMOLED plus screen along with a 1 GHz CPU. It will also come with 8GB of internal memory and bluetooth and wifi. The phone comes in white and black and will sell for about 800,000 won on South Korea’s KT. Via [Samsunghub] ) |
Pioneer’s prototype laser HUD can help you with directions, while connected to an Android smartphone Posted: 11 Oct 2010 06:02 PM PDT Pioneer showed off their cool prototype head-ups display recently and its definitely one of the best I’ve seen. It starts out by generating ethereal navigation images by using lasers. The map data comes directly from the Android smartphone only making this process cooler.
This demonstration has really shown the progression society has made with lasers and could really be a break through in the car industry as well as the mobile industry. Pioneer told Network world that is is planning on selling a version of the technology sometime by 2012, but this could be a add-on to the car and not a pre-installed feature on cars. Despite this, they are still impressing car producers and this could turn into a big innovation for the car industry. For now, we will wait for this awesome invention to come to us consumers, check out the video for a preview as well. Click here to view the embedded video. Via [Engadget] ) |
Cellular South’s Galaxy S to be called Samsung Showcase Posted: 11 Oct 2010 05:25 PM PDT Despite Cellular South’s announcement about the phone back in July, Samsung’s website call it something totally different; the Samsung Showcase.
This phone will be competing with the five other carriers that are offering the same phone, but with their own twist or name. Not many other details are known about when the device is coming out or how much it will cost, but probably around $199.99 like its brothers on the other carriers. This is exciting for anyone on Cellular South since a good Android device will be heading their way besides the HTC Desire, so in the mean time just stay tuned and watch for updates on the release date or any other details. HTC Desire Z coming to Bell for $499 Posted: 11 Oct 2010 04:41 PM PDT The HTC Desire Z will be coming to Bell very soon. This will bring another high-powered Android device to the smartphone market in Canada.
Often referred to as the ‘global G2′, this smartphone will be arriving to stores sometime later this year and there is no word on the official release date. According to this screenshot, the device will shoot for around $499.99 with no contract agreement, which is pretty good for a phone with these type of features. Keep an eye out Canada, the Desire Z will be here soon. You can check out our hands on demonstration as well here Via [Mobile Syrup] ) |
