Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Update: Delayed until further notice

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 11:04 AM PST

This isn't the first time Sprint’s deadline hasn’t been met when rolling out an Android OS update, or the second, or third… Nevertheless, it has happened again with the Epic 4G. Android 2.2 Froyo was due December 26 according to a leaked Sprint internal memo, but now has no time of arrival in sight until further notice from Sprint (or at least until another leak).

epic4g_nofroyo

Sprint must have pulled the update for any number of reasons, but one is for sure: It is not ready. Rolling out the update without all the kinks worked out would be pointless. The same incident happened with Sprint's HTC Hero way back when; multiple updates were needed to fix the same MMS issues. We will hopefully see the update release around the end of January, but there are definitely no promises.

HTC SCRIBE: New tablet computer in the making

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 10:06 AM PST

HTC Corporation has applied for a trademark labeled "HTC Scribe". Under the "Goods and Services" section one can clearly see it has been termed a tablet computer. Luckily, over at DigiTimes there was a tip indicating a few of the specifications we should expect to see.

htc_scribe_trademark

It should feature the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB microSD, 1280 x 720 resolution, and run Android 2.4 (3.0?) Honeycomb. Only time will tell how this tablet computer with size up against the rest, but HTC has far proved the quality of their products and the touch screen experience already.

Gingerbread Ported To HTC Diamond and Touch Pro

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 10:05 AM PST

Now that the Gingerbread source has been made public it’s no surprise that we are starting to see it on many devices unofficially. XDA member Neopeek has managed to get a working port of Gingerbread to the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro.

The port is available for download now, and although it’s still in alpha, many of the key OS features are available. WiFi, voice calls, and more basic features are fully functional and support for other features is, of course, on the way.

If you download the port let us know how it’s working, and be sure to report any bugs so we can see a refined update here soon!

Barnes & Noble Rolling Out Remote Resets on Rooted NookColors

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 09:30 AM PST

A bit of a warning for a users of a rooted NOOKcolor, Barnes & Noble has started pushing out software authentication checks, and, if your device fails, they will remotely reset and wipe your device.

Many are questioning the legal issues this brings up. The user never was asked to sign a contract or was made aware of the consequences of not having official software.

This happens by the user hitting the B&N shop icon, a message then pops up stating “There was a problem with authorization. Please wait while we reset your device.” Then the user is left helpless as their countless purchases, downloads, books and media is all wiped and their NOOKcolor is reset to factory defaults.

Has this happened to anyone? Do you know a workaround? Let us know!

Universal Battery Icon Mod Released for Android

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 09:12 AM PST

XDA Members appelflap and impaler747 have put together a battery icon mod for release. The application’s purpose is to create a single application that can easily handle battery icon changes for as many devices as possible.

The app is very easy to use, and the end-user does not need extensive hacking and modding experience to utilize it.

The app currently supports the Epic and Samsung Galaxy S with more device support on the way. It is ROM specific, meaning that you will have to make sure the mod you’re applying is from your current ROM. The two developers are working hard at not only making this easier, but also more universal with new devices being added as they become available.

PacMap Location-Based Game Updated

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 08:58 AM PST

PacMap is proving to be an interesting location-based game for the Android platform. Essentially it’s a real-time PacMan game that uses your GPS as the method of control.

In order to play you will need a GPS signal and a working internet connection and it’s always a good idea to have some streets around. Try to get as many dots as you can to rack up points all while avoiding the ghosts.

Check out the teaser trailer and gameplay footage below:

Hybrid combines iPhone/Android/Game Boy into geeky mashup

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 06:05 AM PST

This may well be one of the strangest DIY things I have ever laid eyes on. A dude going by the name Goteking has taken am Android smartphone, crammed it inside a gutted game boy, and them put a fake iPhone 4 in the mix.

What we end up with is a hybrid bastard that will leave many wondering WTF. The screen and the Android phone can be seen through the open window of the Game Boy. That white iPhone 4 back has some sort of LED display that shines lights thought the plastic to provide messages.

I will leave it up to you to decide if this is an epic fail or not. You have to admire the audacity to create something so odd. Check out the video below to see the thing in action.

Sharp Galapagos tablets headed to US early in 2011

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 03:48 AM PST

Back in November, we caught word that the Sharp Galapagos Android tablets would be hitting Japan in 2010. If you are in the US and want one of the Sharp tablets, you were probably hoping that Sharp would announce the tablets for American in time for the holiday season this year. That didn't happen, but the good news is that you won’t need to wait long to get the Galapagos tablets if Santa didn't get you an Android device.

Sharp has now announced that the Galapagos tablets will be coming to the US in early 2011. I would bet that the tablets would get an official date when CES 2011 kicks off early next month. We might even see the things at the show. America isn't the only place the tablets are headed either.

Sharp has also announced plans to get the tablet into China and India. Sharp will also be offering up its content service in the US and hoping to get publishes to put content on the store that supports EPUB format. Netbooknews reports that the devices that land in the US and other places are expected to be 3G versions of the WiFi only products that launched in Japan. The screens on the tablets are expected to be 5-inch and 10-inch.

Rockchip RK29xx benchmarked on way to affordable 1080p phones & tablets [Video]

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 03:15 AM PST

Rockchip’s processors may not be as well known as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or Samsung’s Hummingbird, but they’re at the core of many entry-level devices. The newest version, the Rockchip RK29xx, uses an ARM Cortex-A8 core running at up to 1GHz, and opens the door for 1080p encode/decode on tablets as low as $149.

ARMDevices caught up with the company for an overview, which you can see below, and then MP4Nation grabbed some in-house footage of Rockchip benchmarking an RK29xx-powered smartphone prototype. The device managed a Quadrant score of over 1,900 points, besting a TI OMAP3530 powered tablet by around 400 points. Rockchip expect to officially launch the RK29xx chipsets at CES 2011 next week.

Geinimi Android trojan piggybacks 3rd-party apps & sends personal info to hackers

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 01:55 AM PST

A new Android trojan has been discovered, Geinimi, capable of stripping information from a user’s device and sending that to a third-party, or even allowing the handset’s functionality to be remotely controlled. According to Lookout, the Geinimi malware is installed as a side-effect of compromised third-party applications; these have been found in Chinese app stores.

Installed, the trojan sends the phone’s location coordinates and unique identifiers for the device (IMEI) and SIM card (IMSI) to remote servers.

Titles in the Android Market are clean, however, so only those users who side-load apps onto their smartphones should be at risk. Still, it’s a good idea to check the security permissions on each app rather than blindly stab at the OK button, since these compromised Geinimi titles ask for far more access to your phone than a regular app might.

Motorola DROID XOOM tablet has optional LTE 4G modem

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 12:57 AM PST

Motorola’s DROID XOOM Android Honeycomb tablet will not have integrated 4G, sources have suggested, but instead use an optional, removable LTE modem for those living in areas with Verizon 4G coverage. Tipsters yesterday confirmed the DROID XOOM name and the absence of standard 4G, but Android and Me‘s source suggests there’s a PCI express card slot on the Motorola slate for the necessary modem.

The DROID XOOM is expected to drop at CES 2011 next week, with a teaser campaign counting down the days to the show. It runs Android 2.3 Honeycomb on an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor.

Android Honeycomb Music Player: Full Guide [Early Leak]

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 10:54 PM PST

SO, there’s an Unofficial / Leaked version of the new Honeycomb music player from Android floating around out there, right? Well, we had quite a time getting this little APK to work once we got it, and we bet we weren’t the only ones. Therefor, we’ve whipped up for you this little guide and points post so that you might get the sweet updated music action working on your Android device with as little or no hassle as possible. Check it out – and REMEMBER before doing anything, backup your system. Always always always.

First, and foremost, you’ll most likely need a rooted explorer to be able to do step one. Step one is to locate and either delete or otherwise remove your existing Music Player app. This will more than likely be called GoogleMusic.apk and will be located under system/app.

Reboot.

Next, click [right here] to download the Android Honeycomb Music Player .APK file, and using your explorer app to place the file in the same place you deleted the original GoogleMusic.apk. There’s another file in that download by the name of JumperTest, which will not open for you. More about that file down below.

Two steps, that’s it! But wait, what if it doesn’t work? Try stopping what you’re doing, clearing your cache, and trying again.

Now as far as the source for this APK goes, the furthest back we can track it is, of course, XDA, to a user by the name of johnnie93, who posted the following video and gave a big happy face emoticon saying “I will not disclose my sources.”

Android Honeycomb Music Player demo!

JUMPERTEST! What is that all about? As far as we can tell, using all of our intuition powers, is that this is the key to streaming all of your music – from your desktop and from the cloud, back down to your handset. Sounds like a big deal? That’s because it totally is. This right here could be the key to spurring up competition for the iPod. Holy crap can you even believe it?

When you’re in the JumperTest app, take a peek under your Controls tab – you’ll see Start Peer, Stop Peer, and Import Local Media. Neato! Then when you’re back in the Music Player app, check under Music settings – there are straight up options for streaming. It even appears that you’ll be able to cache streamed music for later use – fabulous!

Then there’s a search function you can use on any song – all you’ve got to do is a longpress and it pops up with multiple options – the coolest of which right now is the ability to move right to YouTube. You like the song and want to see if there’s a music video to go with? Easy!

From there it’s basically a dream ride into the future. A simple widget for your home screen here, some sweet slides back and forth there, all kinds of great little features. Have a look at the gallery of screenshots we’ve captured below, then install this little lady yourself! Let us know how it goes here or in the Android Community Forums!

The process is relatively simple. To install:

Hardware GPS Fix for Samsung Vibrant

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 12:12 PM PST

Over at XDA Developers user KWKSLVR has formulated a GPS fix for the Samsung Vibrant that was originally implemented by XDA user Plato56. This fix primarily applies to phones made prior to October; to find out when yours was made just look under the battery at a set of numbers marked next to the S/N. Once there, the European date format will read something like "10.09" labeling first the year and then the month.

samsung_vibrant

To apply this fix your own device you should navigate over to XDA Developers by clicking here. You will essentially be removing a few screws and gently bending one of the contacts up to touch the GPS Antenna. KWKSLVR suggests using a flathead screwdriver from a glasses repair kit. After the process make sure your GPS data is cleared using the A-GPS app found in the market or one of the apps/methods listed on the XDA post.
