HTC Scribe to be revealed at MWC in February?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 11:02 AM PST

We all know the CES will be big on tablets, but according to DigiTimes HTC will be announcing their Honeycomb-based Scribe tablet at the Mobile World Congress in February.

The report, that also mentions the Scribe will be running 3.0 Honeycomb, credits Taiwan based makers of components as the source of the information. HTC has been noticeably absent from the tablet market and this could be a big introduction for them. Hopefully, the wait will be well worth it and the Scribe will be one of the best Android-based tablet options for 2011.

Android NFC e-wallet service could launch in 2011 tip Google insiders

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:55 AM PST

Google’s wireless payment system could launch sometime in 2011, according to two sources supposedly familiar with the search giant’s plans, using NFC functionality integrated into Android devices like the Nexus S. BusinessWeek reports that the system will likely use e-wallet technology acquired in the Zetawire buy-out last year, turning NFC-enabled smartphones into credit card replacements.

Sony PlayStation Xperia Play Poses for Photos, Shows off Android 2.3

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:06 AM PST

The PlayStation Phone, which will be more than likely known as the Xperia Play or Zeus Zi when it launches some time in the (near?) future, isn’t a big secret anymore. We know it exists in some capacity or another, and we know it’s going to launch before 2012. Questions were still being asked about the software version of the device, and now it looks like we can safely assume it will be running Android 2.3 when it does hit shelves.

We also get to see the PlayStation logo, featuring the Square, Triangle, Circle, and X button icons for the PlayStation’s button scheme on their controllers. The device is still unofficial as of right now, and we have no idea when we should expect Sony Ericsson to announce the device. Speculation has it at CES 2011, while others believe a safer bet is MWC. So stay tuned.

Samsung SH100 digicam uses Galaxy S as remote-control

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:36 AM PST

Samsung has outed a new digital camera, the SH100, that can wirelessly connect to a Galaxy S smartphone and use the handset as a remote viewfinder and shutter release. The Samsung SH100 has integrated WiFi which can be used to directly upload photos and video to Facebook, Picasa, YouTube and other online galleries; however, it can also pair with a Galaxy S, previewing the frame on the smartphone’s display, and even allowing control of the 5x optical zoom.

Samsung expects the SH100 to go on sale in March, priced at $199.99.

HTC EVO Shift 4G gets early video hands-on by Wirefly

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 07:26 AM PST

Wirefly want you to love the HTC EVO Shift 4G, and they want you to pre-order the WiMAX smartphone through them rather than direct from Sprint. The retailer has pushed out an early review of the EVO Shift 4G, complete with a ten minute video demo comparing it to its larger predecessor.

“The bottom line is that the HTC EVO Shift combines solid hardware with a fine display and the performance benefits of Android 2.2. If the EVO 4G was too big for you, or if you wanted a physical keyboard, the EVO Shift gives you smaller size and a physical keyboard in a well-engineered package.” Wirefly

It’s hardly an unsurprising conclusion – we could’ve told you the same thing just from seeing the various leaks – but the EVO Shift 4G is still likely to make an impression on would-be EVO 4G buyers who were holding out for a keyboard. It’ll go on sale from January 9 2011, priced at $150.

Verizon tease “suite” of Android 4G LTE devices at CES 2011

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:59 AM PST

Verizon is promising “a sneak peek of a suite of consumer-oriented Android-based devices for its 4G LTE network” at CES 2011 this week, as part of a taster to the LTE smartphones the carrier plans to release imminently. The exact brands on show have not been specified, but we’re assuming the line-up will include the leaked devices from LG, Motorola, HTC and Samsung.

The demo will also include a showcase of “more than 40 new solutions” using LTE connectivity, presumably to give Verizon the opportunity to explain exactly why we should want 4G. The Verizon CES 2011 event will be held on January 6 2011.

Press Release:

Verizon Wireless Shows What 4G LTE Means For Consumers At CES

Wide Range of Ecosystem Partners Demonstrate Products and Solutions that Take Advantage of the 4G LTE Network

LAS VEGAS and BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless said today that its first-ever exhibit booth at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will show off the consumer and enterprise capabilities of its new 4G LTE network with the products, services and solutions that take advantage of the blazingly fast speed and low latency of the new wireless network. On Jan. 6, the company will also offer a sneak peek at a suite of Android-based LTE consumer devices at a news conference.

Visitors to the exhibit booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, #35216) will see firsthand how the nation's fastest 4G LTE network can fundamentally change how consumers manage their daily lives and how businesses interact with each other and with their customers.

Working with nearly 50 different technology ecosystem partners, the Verizon Wireless booth will highlight more than 40 new solutions that take advantage of the fast speeds and low latency of the new 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network. Demonstrations will range from connected home and cars to gaming and entertainment to consumer devices. The demos will also feature new ways to do mobile collaboration for retail, customer service and other industries; home and energy management; and consumer entertainment, including multiplayer gaming, all of which leverage the 4G network in innovative ways. Verizon Wireless and its partners will also feature remote security and health care options and a car that shows different applications coming from the automotive industry.

Many of the solutions being highlighted are the result of collaborations fostered at Verizon Wireless' LTE Innovation Center. The LTE Innovation Center, established in 2008 and located in Waltham, Mass., provides an environment for dozens of diverse companies to work collaboratively to develop innovative products and solutions that leverage 4G LTE technology.

Kindle app for Android tablets coming later in 2011

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:52 AM PST

Amazon has promised to release a version of its Kindle ereader app specifically suited to Android-based tablets later in 2011, ahead of the presumed torrent of slates expected to run Google’s open-source platform. The app will follow Amazon’s successful iPad Kindle ereader, and support Whispersync across multiple Kindle devices and apps to make sure you can always pick up where you left off reading.

No timescale has been given for the Android tablet Kindle app’s release, but we’re assuming it will be free like all the other versions the retailer has developed.

Novartis outs two new Android apps for docs and consumers

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:17 AM PST

There are a lot of apps on the smartphone market from big pharmaceutical firms like Novartis, but these apps have been for platforms like the iPhone for the most part. Novartis has now unveiled new apps for docs using the Android platform on their mobile device.

Novartis has unveiled the Oncology Medical Information app that offers health care pros info on prescribing medications made by Novartis and the ability to send questions to the pharmaceutical giants answer team. Docs aren’t the only Android users Novartis is now offering apps for though.

LG Optimus 2X takes on iPhone 4 in browser test [Video]

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:12 AM PST

A new Korean video comparing the browser performance of the iPhone 4 and the LG Optimus 2X has emerged, and although it’s not exactly scientific, the Android smartphone does seem to render faster than its Apple rival. The Tegra 2 smartphone is expected to make its debut at CES 2011 this week.

Apple’s mobile internet experience has become the de-facto standard by which smartphone browsers are judged, for many users, so this strong performance by the Optimus 2X leaves us hopeful. Still, without knowing the background to the test – such as what connection each phone was using, whether pages had been cached, or other details – it’s hard to draw any more comprehensive conclusions.

Sharp’s 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch Galapagos tablets hit FCC

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 03:48 AM PST

I mentioned last week that Sharp was set to bring its pair of Android tablets under the Galapagos name to the US. We all know that the first step to bringing any gadget that has wireless communications gear of any sort inside is a stop at the FCC for the needed approvals for the US market.

Those two Sharp Galapagos tablets have now landed at the FCC for their needed approvals. Both the 5.5-inch and the 10.8-inch tablets were spied at the FCC by Wireless Goodness over last weekend. That 5.5-inch tablet is the EB-WX51GJ and the larger 10.8-inch version is the EB-WX1GJ. Both of the tablets use Freescale processors and apparently use SDRAM from Samsung inside.

We know that these are Android units from earlier reports of the devices from Japan. Wireless Goodness reports that the OS in the pictures at the FCC appears to be a form of Linux. The OS looks like the previous pics we have seen, which is presumably a custom UI over Android. We still have no firm pricing or availability date from Sharp on either tablet.

SPRiiiNG Android smartphone headed to Thailand in January

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 03:18 AM PST

If you are an Android fan in Thailand, you will be able to get your hands on a new smartphone this month called the SPRiiiNG Smartphone. The device runs Android 2.1 and reminds me more than a little of that Peek communicator that has been around for a while visually.

The SPRiiiNG device has a QWERTY keyboard under the screen and navigation around the screen is via a trackball above the keyboard. The device weighs 110g, measures in at 96.4mm x 62.2mm x 12 mm, and uses a Qualcomm MSM7225 processor running at 528MHz. Internal ROM memory is 512MB and internal RAM is 256MB. The device also has a microSD card slot for expansion.

The screen is a 2.6-inch unit with a resolution of 320 x 240. On the back of the phone is a 3MP camera with LED flash. The device supports HSPA/WCDMA networks in the 900/2100 MHz range and GSM networks in the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz range. Other features include Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, FM tuner, support for digital music, a light sensor, digital compass, and it has an accelerometer inside. Pricing is unknown at this time.

HTC EVO Shift 4G Spotted Again, Ready for Retail Release

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 10:37 PM PST

It seems the HTC EVO Shift 4G just can not stay out of the limelight for long. Engadget has just been sent more shots of the device in the wild sporting it’s blue-backed full QWERTY keyboard. For those of you who do not know, the Shift 4G will be the EVO 4G with a keyboard minus some features.

The differences between the Shift and the original EVO is that the Shift will sport both a lower res-camera (5 Megapixels) and a smaller display all while lacking a front facing camera. Being the starter phone of the EVO series, these three shortfalls could be an acceptable tradeoff.

We can definitely expect a retail release in the next few days, if all of these retail-ready leaks point to anything. We’ll keep you updated!

Vainworks Turns Rear-Facing Handset Cameras Forward

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:13 PM PST

So you say you’ve got a device with only a rear-facing camera, and you wish you were part of the future generation of devices that also have a fron-facing phone, yes? Take a peek at this little lady. It’s called Vainworks – a handset stand setup that uses mirrors (and magic!) to turn your camera backwards (or frontwards, however you look at it I suppose.) This project works with a small (but expanding!) list of smartphones including: Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid 2, Motorola Droid X, HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S (AT&T), Samsung Focus, HTC Droid Eris, and some non-Android phones including iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS, as well as Palm Pre.

This stand works with basically ANY phone with a rear-facing camera, but the designers of Vainworks say that the closer the camera is to the edge of the phone, the better. If the camera is closer to the center, the amount of camera that can be seen with the stand. One stand costs $17.95, a pack of two costs $25.00. Does that sound awesome? It sounds awesome to us. Go check it the heck out over at Vainworks.com now! Only in the USA for now. Check out this video and get all pumped up.

[How Do I] Turn My Android Phone into a SNES for My Television?

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 03:50 PM PST

The question today, and stop me if you’ve heard of this before, is “how do I turn my Android device into an SNES?” – or basically any other video game system that has an emulator in the Android Market, for that matter? Well it’s simple, dude, check it out. First take a look back to May to see the first step – grabbing an app by the name of “WiiMote Controler.” After that, depends on the device you want to use. If you’ve got yourself a Droid X, you’re in the most amount of luck, because you’ll be able to blow your game screen up as big as you like – supposing of course you’ve got a television the size you’d like.

Here’s what you do, and thanks to SXRider821 for the tip on this of course: download that WiiMote Controller, download an emulator like the fantastic SNesoid, make sure your WiiMote is synced up with your device, connect your device to your gigantic high-def television with your HDMI cord, and bam. There you have it. Greatest thing ever.

BONUS: It’s in 3D! I know how much you love that.

Sixteen years ago, when you first jammed out on Killer Instinct on your Super Nintendo, did you have any idea that you’d be playing that same game on a much bigger screen, but this time using a converter cable to run an emulator of your old system off of a cellphone, using a controller from an advanced Nintendo controller from a system made for wireless gesture interaction? What a weird present we live in.
