T-Mobile Doubles the Speed of America's Largest 4G Network and Introduces Its First 4G Tablet: the Dell Streak 7
LAS VEGAS, Nev. and BELLEVUE, Wash. — Jan. 6, 2011 — Today at the 2011 International CES, T-Mobile USA CEO and President Philipp Humm highlighted the company's network leadership, supported by Nielsen data confirming that T-Mobile delivered the fastest wireless data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets during the second half of 2010.1 In addition, Humm announced the nationwide availability of T-Mobile's 4G network, now reaching approximately 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas.
"In 2010, we delivered on our ambitious goal to become America's largest 4G network, and this year our customers will be able to experience speeds equivalent to home broadband while on the go," said Humm. "We'll continue to focus on fueling the adoption of mobile data, by offering innovative and affordable smartphones and tablets, as well as aggressive data plan pricing and rich and compelling data services."
T-Mobile also unveiled plans to double the speed of its 4G network this year, which will be capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps. Moreover, the company announced that in 2011 it will launch at least 25 new 4G devices, starting with its first 4G tablet — the Dell™ Streak 7, expected to be available at T-Mobile stores across the country in the coming weeks. The company vowed to aggressively expand and evolve its 4G smartphone portfolio, launching additional devices capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps in the first half of 2011, and smartphones capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps in the second half of the year.
The cutting-edge download speed was demonstrated today by company representatives using a T-Mobile laptop stick developed by ZTE, capable of delivering peak download speeds of up to 42 Mbps and slated to launch in the first half of 2011. By doubling the speed of its 4G network, T-Mobile will offer its customers an unprecedented wireless experience, fueled by improved performance in the use of rich media applications, including creating and sharing mobile content, streaming video, and participating in multi-player gaming and videoconferencing.
The company expects 140 million Americans in 25 metro areas to have access to these increased 4G speeds by mid-2011. T-Mobile's enhanced speed capabilities will also benefit its customers using existing 3G devices for data services, as the backward-compatible network enables 3G devices to achieve their maximum speed performance.
"We are pleased to support T-Mobile as it continues to deploy and develop its 4G network, which today is delivering next-generation speeds and performance to hundreds of millions of customers," said Angel Ruiz, president and CEO, Ericsson North America. "We are confident that HSPA+ will continue to offer a viable and cost-effective alternative to LTE and WiMAX, providing a comparable 4G experience to customers for the foreseeable future. And, with a strong and growing ecosystem of network equipment and handsets, we anticipate that HSPA+ can develop into one of the most advanced technology platforms in the industry."
"Consumers are increasingly embracing the benefits of smartphones, with 80 percent of U.S. mobile customers wanting a smartphone, and as many as 100 million of them not yet having one," said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. "Our compelling offering of affordable broadband devices and consumer-friendly data plan pricing will enable customers to step up to mobile data and 4G, and our customers will not pay a toll to ride on our 4G superhighway."

Google has given a surprise demonstration of Android Honeycomb on Motorola’s Xoom LTE tablet at the CES 2011 opening keynote. As rumored, there are no physical controls around the Xoom’s bezel; instead, everything is handled by on-screen buttons in Honeycomb. That should avoid user confusion when moving from device to device, something we’ve seen happen on several occasions when Android smartphone manufacturers shuffle around the controls order.
There’s a new widgets gallery, with more detailed previews before you place them, and an impressively-fluid YouTube app for streaming video. More details over at SlashGear, and in the video below.
Yesterday on Twitter, @TrevorDuke asked “@cyanogen Just wondering what happened to nightlies! I love seeing the releases come together day by day!”… well fortunately all, Cyanogen himself actually responded. CyanogenMod 7 is apparently almost ready for nightly releases.
In the upcoming days we should definitely see CM7 nightlies for the Nexus S, and hopefully a few other devices soon. We are hoping that more CyanogenMod settings will be available in the nightlies than were previously released in the Alpha. We will definitely be flashing and testing them out when released, so stay tuned in for further updates!
T-Mobile‘s site has been quietly updated to mention the Dell Streak 7, which has now been added to the Discover drop-down menu. Spotted by TmoNews, the link itself leads to a 404 page, but it’s more evidence that the 7-inch Android tablet is fast incoming.
The Dell Streak 7 is expected to include both T-Mobile and AT&T 3G support in a single version, as well as having NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. T-Mobile is holding a media event at CES 2011 this morning, so the Streak 7 could well make its official debut there.
Canadian carrier Bell Mobility has announced that it too will be offering the Motorola ATRIX 4G, with the Tegra 2 powered Android 2.2 superphone headed to the network in the coming months. As with AT&T, Bell will offer not only the ATRIX 4G but the pair of accessory docks: the HD Multimedia Dock and the Webtop laptop dock.
Pricing for the Bell ATRIX 4G is yet to be announced.
Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA Arc has landed over at SlashGear for some hands-on playtime, and its Sony-sourced “Reality Display” certainly impresses. Easily capable of holding its own against the Galaxy S’ Super AMOLED panel, it’s bright and has huge viewing angles.
More hands-on photos and feedback over at SlashGear.

Just about all of us have to work and if you are the person who owns the business or is in charge of getting supplies for the business getting a good deal and staying on your budget can be a pain. Sometimes that means you have to shop around or look through papers to find deals. If you are an Android user OfficeMax has had an app for the smartphone for a while now.
The app has just been updated and gets new features that make it easy for you to find cool stuff in the store and save money at the same time. The new app is OfficeMax Mobile v2.0, it wraps in weekly ad specials, and special offers right on the smartphone.
The user can also find out the hours of their local store and if you are traveling and need something, it will use Geo location to find the store closest to you. The app also allows the user to buy things straight from the smartphone. You can download the updated mobile app right now.
Sony Ericsson has confirmed to Android Community this morning that the XPERIA X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro will see no further Android OS updates beyond Android 2.1 Eclair. The news is likely to come as a significant disappointment to early-adopters of Sony Ericsson’s Android range.
However, Sony Ericsson insists that there will be future enhancements to the X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro, for instance a multitouch update for the X10 in Q1 2011, as the company refines the experience of the handsets moving forward. Still, if you want Froyo, Gingerbread or anything else, it looks like unofficial ROMs are the only way to get them.
Velocity Micro has had some of its cool Android-powered Cruz tablets up for pre-order for a while now. The company is showing off its Cruz line at CES 2011 this week with the addition of three new Cruz tablets to the lineup. The first of the new offerings is the L510 with a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 capacitive touchscreen and a thin design. The machine has NVIDIA Tegra 250 chipset, dual-core CPU at 1GHz, front and rear cameras, 3G options, Bluetooth, GPS, HDMI output and runs Android 2.2/2.3 for the OS.
The P38 is an 8-inch tablet with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. It has WiFi inside, 4GB of internal memory, front and rear cameras, and HDMI out. Like the L510, the P38 also runs Android 2.2/2.3 for the OS. The last of the new tablets is the L37.
The L37 has a 7-inch screen with capacitive touch and a resolution of 1024 x 600. It has WiFi, 4GB of internal memory, and front and rear cameras. Other features include 3G options, GPS, Bluetooth, micro HDMI output and it runs Android 2.2/2.3 for the OS. All of the new tablets have the Amazon Kindle app installed. Pricing and availability are unannounced at this time.
Well it turns out that Honeycomb may not require a dual-core processor after all. Dan Morrill, a developer on the Android team, says that Android 3.0 Honeycomb does not have any hardware requirements and that the rumors were completely false.
This news will definitely spark some hope into the hearts of the single core Galaxy Tab users out there. XDA Developers will surely be hard at work trying to port Honeycomb functional versions onto the single core tablets so this will only help to reinforce their work.
The Xperia arc will be featured with Sony’s 2.3 Xperia Technology interface skinned atop Android 2.3 Gingerbread when released. It is just 8.7mm at its thinnest point -one of the arc’s more appealing features. It hosts a 4.2in touchscreen and will be powered by a 1Ghz Qualcomm processor.
This phone will debut globally in two select colors, either Midnight Blue or Misty Silver. For its camera, the Xperia arc will have an 8.1MP on the back, featuring Sony’s Exmor R photo-enhancing technology. The device will launch in the first quarter of 2011, but no exact date has been worked out yet. Pricing hasn’t been released yet, either. Check out the full press release below for more information.

The CLIQ 2 was announced by Motorola today and proved to its audience that it will be a pretty solid device. It will carry a 3.7 in screen and run a 1Ghz processor. It will run MOTOBLUR so you can expect it to be great for social use.
<
As you can see, it will feature a titanium hue on its outer shell during its release. The device is set to launch January 9th on T-Mobile so expect to see more reviews on this unit very soon.
Another tablet, the G-Slate, is soon to be released by LG. This device will be 4G capable and also run Android 3.0 Honeycomb optimized for tablet computers. No hardware information has been discussed concerning this tablet thus far, but it will be interesting to directly compare it to the recently released information concerning the Motorola XOOM.
Information on the pricing and date of release is extremely thin, but we suspect it will be a first quarter release. T-Mobile’s YouTube account luckily posted a video showing off Honeycomb running smoothly on the G-Slate:
The 10.1 inch XOOM tablet by Motorola was unveiled at todays press conference at CES, Las Vegas. This year Motorola offers a new “first” by confirming that the XOOM will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Thats not even half of it; the device offers dual core processing with each core capable of running at 1Ghz.
The device will become available first quarter of 2011 and will become upgradeable to handle 4G LTE in the second quarter. It will sport a 2.0MP front facing camera for video chatting over either WiFi or 3G and also have a 5.0MP rear camera. Like your Android smartphone, the XOOM will be constantly connected to the internet for instant Gmail and ActiveSync notifications. More information in the press release:

Motorola has been on a streak today with their Android devices, especially when we think about high-profile the company is aiming these devices to be. With the Motorola ATRIX 4G, the company touts it as the first smartphone to feature a qHD display. The Bionic, which will be launching on Verizon’s network sooner than later, also features the high resolution display, but the obvious difference seems to be the lack of MOTOBLUR functionality between the devices.
The Bionic will feature a 1GHz dual-core processor under the hood, a 4.3-inch qHD resolution capacitive touchscreen display, 512MB of RAM, and a front-facing VGA camera. On the back, there’s an 8MP camera. There’s HDMI out, for good measure. The device is scheduled to launch on the network some time in the first quarter, 2011. Pricing hasn’t been finalized yet. It’s official. Honeycomb is version 3.0 and definitely an OS optimized for tablet use. The Android youtube page was updated earlier today with a video displaying actual use of the new operating system. Clips of book reading, the actual Honeycomb desktop, and the software buttons were all displayed in the video.
Unfortunately, the video was soon pulled and now displays “This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender’s friend request”. Unless you have personally been sent the link, you may need to wait until it floats around the internet elsewhere for a viewing. Considering the estimated launch date for 3.0 is March, seeing the operating system function smoothly in demo was reassuring.
[Update]: The video is back online, so go ahead and check it out below. Definitely worth it.
A new e-reader named Mirasol (after mirasol paper technology) will supposedly be running Android OS at this year’s CES event according the picture below.
We’re not sure if this photo is legit, but we can say that we like it. It looks as if this is one of Qualcomm’s 5.7 inch displays that requires absolutely no backlight at all. Having Android OS run smoothly on one of these devices would make tablet viewing outdoors a much better experience.
We’ve been eagerly anticipating LG’s Tegra 2 powered Optimus 2X smartphone ever since we first saw it leak out, and the fact that Motorola has since announced the ATRIX 4G doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm. Over at SlashGear, Vince has grabbed some hands-on time with the Optimus 2X courtesy of NVIDIA, and managed to put it through its paces and even compare the Android handset to the DROID X.
First impressions of the hardware seem good, though there are still questions over how well Android 2.2 – which the Optimus 2X will launch with internationally – handles the NVIDIA dual-core processor. Check out all the details over at SlashGear.
High definition Skype video calls could soon be a possibility on Android devices, with the news that NVIDIA has developed a Skype HD reference platform. However, you’ll need a Tegra 2 based “superphone” or tablet in order to use it, since it relies on the dual-core chipset’s HD processing abilities.
Unveiled at NVIDIA’s CES 2011 press conference today, and demonstrated on an Android-based tablet, the app will allow for cross-platform two-way HD video conversations between Tegra 2 based mobile devices and Skype’s PC/Mac apps. It uses the SkypeKit SDK released in 2010. No word on when we can expect to see the app available, though we’re presuming NVIDIA will be offering the tech to those buying chips.
