Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:14 AM PST If you thought Apple couldn’t possible simplify the aesthetics of the MacBook Pro line any further, take a look at the HIDE laptop. The ultra minimalist design hides all ports when closed. Aside from the small hinge and indentation to help lift the cover, it just looks like a solid aluminum block. It’s naive and utilitarian. I really like it. Designer: Youri Hong ---------- |
A Watch for Automotive Enthusiasts Posted: 06 Jan 2011 01:03 AM PST Shift Hybrid is a watch based on automotive engineering featuring elements like disc brakes, speedometers, seat belts, and gear shifts. The materials used are also found in cars. Parts like aluminium, carbon fibre, stainless steel, rubber, and glass. Take a look after the jump and see if you can spot all the automotive influences. The design utilizes both analog and digital parts. All the gears, rotors and needles are analog but they are controlled digitally to precisely keep time right down to the millisecond. Quite impressive. Designer: Menghsun Wu ---------- |
Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:55 AM PST I often like to guess what concepts are before reading descriptions because I enjoy the surprise in being totally off-base. This Analog Fan uses an old trick with gears and pulleys to generate enough power for 5 minutes of hair blowing wind. Not meant to cool a room down but it keeps air moving and all without electricity. By the way, I originally thought it was a clock. Designer: Luc van Hoeckel ---------- |
Lock Thy Knife and Throw Away the Key Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:46 AM PST Wait a minute there is no key involved here in the Knife Locker. Apparently the knife itself is the key. It locks into position with a 270-degree counterclockwise turn and kick starts the UV sterilization process. Ready for the next use, bright and shiny! That sleek house will look good on any kitchen counter, what do you think? Designer: Min Seong Kim ---------- |
Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:45 AM PST One can never have too many peelers because none are created equal. The Companion Ring Peeler slips onto the index finger. The outer ring peels the skin as you drag it across an apple. Will this form be good enough for tough skin fruits and veggies? Doubt it, but it looks like a practical companion for picnics and traveling. Will I buy one? totally! Designers: Qing Ji and JiaYue Wu ---------- |
Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:42 AM PST The Vyne is quite an elaborate iPhone Stand, in fact I think its one of the most obvious ones I’ve seen. It has a flexible strap that coils into various forms… going round your neck like a snake charmer's serpent to sitting pretty on your desk. The flexible elastomer neck and plastic clip secure your phone into place. Good for when you want to watch some videos on the phone. However, don’t even try using it while walking! Designer: Clint Spencer & Ryan Eder ---------- |
Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:35 AM PST LUMI is the world's first sleep mask that not only blocks light, but also simulates sunrise. It focuses on two strong sleep cues, darkness and light, to help you fall asleep with ease and wake feeling alert and refreshed. I think it’s brilliant. Designer Taylor Franklin Hide has already reached his goal of 10k but there’s still 17 days left. Pledge $50 or more and you’ll receive a LUMI Mask.
