Powerful Nokia OMAP4 Android Device Possibly in the Works

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 08:14 AM PST

Take a look, if you’d like, at the portal -lxr.free-electrons.com for a Linux file automatically generated from the OMAP hardware databases, one with some spicy previews for what’s to come early this year. In the first few lines you’ll notice some lovely bits that could add up to a spicy new device from two of the biggest names in tech: Texas Instruments and Nokia. A device with an OMAP4 processor – is this the same processor announced back in December 2010 by TI, one with dual-core, 1.5GHz, support for 1080p video playback and conferencing, gesture recognition, two 12 megapixel cameras, and more? I’d bank on yes.

This news bit popped up to us via the Maemo messageboards just moments ago. What will this undeniably exciting and super future powerful device be? And when will it be announced? How about 35 days from now at MWC 2011? We’ll be there – in fact, yours truly will be there at MWC aka Mobile World Congress 2011 so we can be supreme first posters of such info to you, the valued Community. – Thanks for the tip garsim!

Verizon Reducing Return Policy to 14 Days?

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 01:22 AM PST

Today we received a tip from Verizon (or someone posing as Verizon, I suppose*), saying that Verizon will be reducing their return policy time to a total of 14 days from the sale date. The amount of days in effect when this post is written is at 30 (with 14 being the number for tablet devices,) and Verizon says this new amount of days will he helpful in allowing them to “provide a great customer experience given our success with reducing and managing device returns through our customer-focused retail location and online processes and our best-in-class device portfolio.” Shwa?

**Image courtesy of flickr user RetailByRyan95

*I only say suppose here because as we’ve checked on this story flowing in and out of other blogs reporting phone news, there seems to be some air of distrust in this story. Does it seem like a fakie to you? As when you check on VerizonWireless.com for their current return policy, it only extends until January 15th and this new policy is said to take effect on the 16th, we’re inclined to believe the news clip to be real. Take a read of this new news clip:

Starting January 16, we will introduce a 14-day return policy on new devices, similar to practices of other major retailers of consumer electronic products.  We believe a 14-day return policy will let us provide a great customer experience given our success with reducing and managing device returns through our customer-focused retail location and online processes and our best-in-class device portfolio.  We believe the change is consistent with the growing importance of choosing the right data plan, features and device the first time.

Oh Verizon, you silly goose.

Dolphin Browser Mini V1.0 for Android Released Today!

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 12:53 AM PST

Back a week or so ago when you saw us running through the leaked Honeycomb Music player, you may have noticed a couple of aquatic sea creatures popping up on a list of possible options for searching for a music track: Dolphin Browser HD and Dolphin Browser Mini. Both of these apps are super fantastic web browsers, and today the mini version comes out of Beta for a full release. This lovely little lady is officially titled Dolphin Browser Mini V1.0, it’s free, and it’s available in Android Marketplace now!

If you’d like to know the differences between this Dolphin and the other different versions of the browser available in the marketplace, take a look at [this post], but we’ll tell you right now, “Mini” is the fastest and most stripped down version of the app, so you know dang sure well which one we’re choosing. If you’ve used Dolphin Browser Mini before, you’re in for some surprises, as this is the first major upgrade of the system, and they’ve pulled out more than one stop. This first full version of the app has:

• Improvements to Dolphin Mini’s UI: refined menu style, toolbox design, moved tab menu location, and etc.
• Addition of Data backup and restore feature (in toolbox) for those who would otherwise perhaps lose relevant data when resetting one’s phone or uninstalling this app.
• Addition of quick access to clean data (again, in toolbox) and simplification of the layout of dolphin settings.
• Addition of Bookmarks Label which allows you to label each bookmark and see all of the bookmarks falling under any certain label.
• Addition of flash plugin with an “on demand” option as default – set to “always on” if you like.
• Pop-up of options available now upon press-hold of address bar, including “Add Bookmark,” “Select Text,” “Copy URL,” “Paste,” “Share,” and “Save Page.”

You can take a look at ALL of the features of this lovely and FREE app in the app market now by clicking HERE whilst browsing with your Android phone. If you’re still not convinced, check out the gallery and the video below. Green and orange! BTW everyone should take a page out of the production value book of the people presenting this video, it’s freaking awesome. Also if you’re using this browser (or if you REFUSE TO,) let us know why!

Sony Ericsson Xperia PlayStation Phone Spotted Again, Compared to other devices

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:43 PM PST

The Sony PlayStation phone, AKA the Sony Erisson Xperia, has been the the focus of the internet lately. Ever since its initial leak, we have been seeing a lot of the phone. This time, we have the device up against the PSP-1000, the PSP Go, DSi, GBA SP and other Sony Ericcson handsets.

The device is just as we have seen, but the comparison to the other devices gives us more of a perspective. The device is running a third-party emulator was downloaded and tested, with 70 percent success, but as far as telling us anything special, it's worthless.

Hit up the source link for more detailed pics, but as far as information – it's all in Chinese.

Motorola Atrix 4G and Laptop Dock Hands-On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:14 PM PST

The Motorola Atrix has been officially announced to the world. Being one of the only “jaw dropping” devices at this year’s CES it’s an incredibly innovative device.

Being touted as “The Worlds Most Powerful Smartphone,” the device will allow the user to dock into both a larger display and laptop case, and with it’s full onboard RAM, it definitely has the power to be a true laptop/desktop/tablet replacement. Once docked the user will presented with the Motorola WebTop UI and we went hands-on with both the device and its laptop dock.

The device is proving to be very impressive. From what we saw, it not only is impressive software wise, the hardware on the device is top-notch.

AppMakr Works for Amateur and Pro Mobile App Designers, Available for Android SOON

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:54 PM PST

Behold! Announced at CES 2011! That ever-so-simple app creation service AppMakr.com will soon be adding not only support for Windows Phone 7, but for Android as well. This service has been active for iOS for some time now (3,500 apps made on it so far,) and allows everyone from the well-versed to the complete newb designers to create pro-apps that they can then release on their own for FREE! Sounds too good to be true? It’s really sort of not!

Until now, you’ve only been able to sign up as an Apple Developer. This costs $99, and is paid to Apple. You’d have to do this no matter what system you were using to develop apps if you planned on sending them to Apple. We assume that the $25 regular fee for signing up as an Android developer will end up having to be payed down the road as well. One of the biggest reasons, let me tell you, that this whole system is exciting, is that this is reportedly the ONLY DIY application creation platform that requires NO CODING to develop mobile apps. It’s been wildly popular for developing for Apple, now it’s going to be on Android and WP7 – that’s big.

This program is currently in Beta form, and anyone can sign up for testing if they head over to http://blog.appmakr.com/beta-testing/ and get added up. The FULL platform support is scheduled for February 2011. We’re signed up – so should you! Wee! Check out the full press release below:

CES, iLOUNGE PAVILION BOOTH #4622—Las Vegas, NV—January 6, 2011 – AppMakr.com, the leading Do It Yourself™ mobile application creation platform, today announced it is adding support for Windows Phone and Android operating systems for its rapid application creation platform. The additional OS support makes AppMakr's platform the only DIY application creation platform that requires no coding to develop mobile applications on devices that run Windows Phone, Android and iOS, the most popular mobile operating systems in the world.

The consumerization of IT and the proliferation of mobile operating systems, from iPhone to Windows Phone to Android, means that companies and developers that want to create meaningful and rich mobile interactions on the exploding array of devices available to the marketplace today need to support multiple platforms for mobile applications.

To date, more than 3500 applications have been created using the AppMakr platform, including the very popular iTunes applications for the PGA Tour, the Perez Hilton blog, the Harvard Business Review, BBC, and PBS.
"Mobile is the new frontier for news content, and our users rely on the PBS NewsHour app for news video, audio, and in-depth analysis," said Travis Daub, creative Director of the PBS NewsHour. "No segment of our audience is growing faster than mobile. We're absolutely thrilled that AppMakr is extending support for Android and Windows Phone 7. We will be able to rapidly roll out new apps and updates to support even more devices, and greatly expand our mobile reach. "

Unlike other mobile application platform providers, AppMakr's innovative and intuitive technology enables anyone, from highly-experienced and technically savvy developers to people with no development experience in all lines of businesses, to create both enterprise and consumer-facing native mobile applications in minutes, compile and then, upload the application to an application store like iTunes, Windows Phone Marketplace and Android Market at no charge.

"Mobility has long passed the point of 'check-box' for companies wishing to engage business users and consumers," said Sean Shadmand, President, AppMakr. "The mobile channel is the fastest growing new communication channel, and as it evolves, applications demand more collaborative and social components that enable rich and meaningful interactions. AppMakr is committed to the social evolution of mobility, and enabling anyone, regardless of job function or technical expertise, to turn their unique vision into reality."

All interested users are invited to participate in beta testing of the new AppMakr Android and Windows Phone functionality at no charge simply be registering for an Appmakr account at http://go.AppMakr.com/beta. General availability of the new platform support is scheduled for February 2011.
AppMakr will be providing demos of some of the world's most popular applications running on multiple platforms, including Android and Windows Phone devices, created using the AppMakr platform at its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show in the iLounge Pavilion booth #4622. The company will also have an interactive Photo Booth featuring mobile device costumes.

About AppMakr
Launched in January 2010, AppMakr is already the leading DIY platform allowing non-developers to create sophisticated native iOS, Windows Phone and Android mobile applications, and has been used by the world's leading brands, including Newsweek, PBS, The PGA TOUR, National Geographic, Macworld, Harvard Business Review, Mac|Life, as well as other brands including U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate representatives and committees, bands and thousands of others to connect with their users through the mobile distribution channel. Applications created with AppMakr run on multiple mobile operating systems and devices, including iPhone, iPod Touch, Android and Windows Phone devices.

BOOX Android eReader Hands-On at CES 2011 from SlashGear

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:52 PM PST

Behold! One of the only ereaders at the entirety of CES 2011. This is the BOOX M Series eReader, a little-known reader whose unique features (including a low-level Android) might very well give it a chance in a world engrained in the one-tablet law enforced by Kindle and NOOK. Check out its wobbly back, smooth and sassy border, and big fat beautiful indented buttons.

This BOOX M Series eReader is running some form of Android, we’re guessing right around 1.6 (strange, yes?) The display is a super cool E-Ink Vizplex sizing in at a giant 9.7-inches. The E-Ink is working at a 8/16-level grayscale, which means it rocks. Inside you’ll find an 800MHz processor, 4GB of Flash, and a 1600mAh rechargeable battery. There’s USB 2.0, a microSD card slot which can be expanded to 32GB, a 3.5mm audio port, and no 3G – but integrated Wifi included. Sound good? Since it appears that most ereaders are made or broken based on their die-hard fans and lovers of big libraries of books – so we’ll see.

Zombies, NOOO!!!

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:39 PM PST

Behold, an Android game of zombies. This is an app very VERY similar to the game we showed you a few days ago by the name of PacMap (a game of PacMan.) This one, like PacMap, is a location-based game that sees where you are on a map (in map view, or satellite view, etc) and shows you where all the zombies are. Depending on the difficulty of the game you choose, you could be outrunning a single zombie moving at 2MPH, or a whole hoard moving at 8MPH! You’ll have your face in your phone, tearing up the streets with your feet as you outrun the living dead in virtual reality. Terror!

This game is free on the Android Marketplace right now, as we speak, and the concept is totally awesome and silly. If you end up playing this game, I and we MUST warn you not to go running around on the street without taking proper care to not be hit by cars. Remember that zombies aren’t real (at least the ones in this game aren’t,) and outrunning zombies isn’t worth getting killed over! Take a peek at official words here:

The Zombie Run! is a game which uses Zombie Finder as a survival tool for people living in a zombie-infected area. It displays the location of nearby zombies, helping you safely navigate your urban or rural area. This is fun game for passing time.

You can find the game in Android Market now by searching for “Zombie, Run!”

NOOKcolor Hacked and Given Ubuntu

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:16 PM PST

Having reviewed the NOOKcolor myself, hands on and clicking, reading and watching videos, all that stuff firsthand, I can tell you that this little pad has some juice to it. But it’s locked down. It’s a closed system made so that only Barnes and Noble can allow apps in, and only apps they’ve approved, apps having to do with reading only. So what does the hacker community do when a GRAVE INJUSTICE like this goes down? They bust it open and free it up. You might remember a few weeks ago when NOOKcolor was Rooted, giving it eventually things like Android 2.2 Froyo and Android Marketplace, now what would you like? How about Ubuntu?

All hail XDA forum member devastatorx as he sets up a guide that shows all users the way toward getting Ubuntu to work on their NOOKcolor. The idea to do this, says devastatorx, came from the Ubuntu project on Nexus One (you’ll find, if you look, that Ubuntu is actually a popular operating system to hack-install on many devices, almost like it’s a dare everyone has to try to claim.) This is a work in progress, so says the people working on the project, so beware and be safe if you dare. You’ll have to be rooted for this hack to work (see the link above to attain this,) and all downloads are available in the XDA forum thread. Have fun!

Also note that Barnes and Noble has recently been dropping unexpected complete resets on hacked or otherwise suspicious NOOKcolors – any way to protect from this would be smart to think about!

Hanvon HPad A116 Android Tablet Hands-On via SlashGear

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:46 PM PST

How would you like to take a peek at one gigantically long tablet with Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 on it? Here’s one right here, one we just got our hands on not a few moments ago at CES 2011 – a Hanvon HPad A116. This sassy slate has a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, a resolution of 1024 x 600, and a 512M mDDR, with 2GB of internal memory. Inside you’ll find your choice of Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 (though I’m not quite sure why you’d opt for something older), and the entire system will be HEAVILY customized by Hanvon.

You’ll also see a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front of the device as well as a 5 megapixel camera on the back. There’s a microUSB port along the side sitting right near a lovely mini-HDMI port. The battery is said to play 6 hours of video or work for 8 hours under light reading conditions. This device is currently planned to be costing $350 sometime later this year. Wantsies?!

Motorola XOOM Tablet Named Best in Show at CES 2011

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:36 PM PST

This year’s Best in Show award at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Nevada is none other than the brand new Motorola Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, the one called XOOM! It was almost an upset as many believed that the operating system Android 3.0 Honeycomb would snatch the award, no problem. Instead, it was found pertinent by the voters to instead vote on the vessel. Of all of the tablets (and there were a lot of them) to pop out with Honeycomb at this event, the XOOM is the hottest.

This device will undoubtedly be the biggest competitor with the iPad and the upcoming iPad 2 in this coming year, it sporting a Tegra 2 processor, front and back facing cameras, HDMI-out, a gigantic 10-inch display, and sweet connection to Verizon’s super-fast new 4G LTE network. We’ve got a live demo of the device here below. Take a peek and tell us how you think it’ll fare in the coming quarters:

Android Market now on Logitech Revue via Brute Force Hack

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:23 PM PST

So you’ve in the jailbreak mood and you’ve got a hankering for a job that requires not only hacks of your device on the inside, but physical changes on your outside as well. How about a Logitech Revue jailbreak, one that requires a NAND format, a soldering iron, and a completely virgin device – aka one that’s never even been POWERED ON before? Sounds like a challenge to me.

Check out this video and the rest of the instructions on GTVHacker for a thirteen-steep workthrough for you to get the Android Marketplace working on your Revue. This is a HIGH RISK procedure as you’re going to have to physically crack the case, download and install custom firmware, and get your Android Market on, additionally stopping those television network blockages you’ve grown to tisk. Check out the video below and the Steps to Get Root on GTVHacker.
