| 20 Questions with Benjamin Hubert Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:02 AM PST We met Benjamin Hubert at last year’s Electrolux Design Lab event and although familiar with his work, came away with even more respect. Born in 1984, Benjamin studied ID at Loughborough University graduating in 2006. A year later he founded his own studio that includes a diverse range of furniture and lighting products. He’s laid back and has an awesome sense of humor so we decided to play 20 questions. Designer: Benjamin Hubert Benjamin Hubert, what do your friends and family call you?Ben….I have a university nickname some of my friends call me but I’m not telling you that. | Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:29 AM PST It’s clear from this year’s CES how important 3D will be and that means 3D glasses. For the most part, they’re still quite “techie” looking and definitely not for the discerning fashionista. The Del Rey & Co. 3D classes draw upon the classic lexington shape, properly disguised as high-fashion specs. Designer: Del Rey & Co.

| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:14 AM PST This year's IIDA has some pretty interesting entries. For example the Water Vapor Project is an attempt to hydrate the parched desert landscape of Africa. It proposes to build an environment where greenery thrives thanks to the basic principles of water vapor. Hat tip Designboom! Designers: Sangwook Park, Sinjeong Lee, Hoyoung Lee & Hyeonju Jo

| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:07 AM PST Behold a chair with a real big story of intent inside it. This is a project by designer Shawn Weiland and it goes by the title “Affectual Chair.” It’s made of plywood and offers a relationship between materials, between user and object, and amongst the people interacting with the chair. This chair disposes of extra, superfluous, or otherwise decorative elements and goes for what the designer calls a purist formal language. Decide for yourself in the gallery below. The chairs legs are made up of a 1/2″ stainless steel tube with 3/8″ rod inside the center for mechanical connection. At the tips of the front legs of the chairs, there’s a black urethane cap on each. At the back two legs near the bottom, there’s a 3/8″ stainless steel rod mechanically held to a 1/2″ stainless steel tube with a urethane rubber outer membrane for protection. The seat of the chair is made up of 1/2″ plywood with a walnut outer veneer and read oak veneer core. Designer: Shawn Weiland

| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:06 AM PST Here's a flip phone that could put the “cool” back into clamshells. When you receive an incoming call, the corner dog-ears up and if need be, opens up (book-style) using actuators like artificial muscles in its elastomeric cover. Awesome! Motorola StarTAC 2.o maybe? | Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST Check out this lovely new system for hanging up your stuff directly on the wall. This is a project by the name of “Illusion Wall” and it’s made to provide a pleasant atmosphere to otherwise frequently visited but oft forgotten flat blank walls. Each shape in this project is inspired by sketches based on potato roots and are meant to hold every bit of your day-to-day items such as coats, purses, hats, etc. Each tile is composed of three different lumps that, when combined with the rest, form a sense of movement as each tiles bumps are irregular. This project is designed and will be developed by the same person: Dideia. Each piece is made with a silicone mold, look just lovely in the mid-day sunlight. Designer: Dideia

| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST Here’s a project consisting of three different bits of children’s furniture, each of them able to not only accommodate the child’s sitting, playing, and laying, it can also contain a whole batch of toys inside! Each of these bits of furniture is made of light foam so that the kids cannot hurt themselves whilst playing, and leatherette which is eco friendly false leather. Each of the furniture bits can be cleaned easily, and the color schemes are what the designers call “sober.” I must agree. Each of these soft creatures, part of the “Soft Gang,” has a complete lack of facial features, no ears, no hair, none of that – allowing then the child’s imagination to run wild. One of the designers, Luiza Kwiatkowska, suggests they might be seen as a rabbit, a horse, and a fish! All are lovely. Designer: Creature Industry
