German Android 2.4 Nexus S Phone [Developments]

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 11:06 AM PST

Last night we gave you a bit of a news bit that had to do with both an FCC filing and a video that showed a German fellow holding a phone that appeared to be a Nexus S device running Android 2.4 (this video and FCC filing are in the gallery below, or you can take a [click back] to that post if you’d like as well.) Now what we see today, courtesy of MobiFlip, is a closeup picture of a screen of a German language based phone that again says its Nexus S phone and is running Android 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich.)

Lets compare the specs we know on this phone, the one in the video filmed by German group BestBoyZ, and the one in the FCC filing from last night:

FCC Version:
Model Number GT-i9023
Band: AWS 3G

Video Version (aka BestBoyZ version):
Model Number Nexus S
Kernel-Version 2.6.35.7-gfed90c5 android-build@apa28 #1
Baseband Version I9023XXJL2
Build Number soju-userdebug 2.4 GHR84 86467 test-keys
Android Version: 2.4

MobiFlip Version:
Baseband Version I9023XXJK2
Android Version 2.4

And just for fun, the current Nexus S has a model number GT-i9020.

SO what does all that crap mean? Take a look at what’s similar: there’s a supposed Android version 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on two of the 3, and the number set i9023 is the same on all three. Sadly we cannot see the kernel version on the MobiFlip version or we’d know if it was one of those userdebug mode phones that BestBoyZ have. If you weren’t here for the last post, that means the phone is a pre-release version meant exclusively for testing. A phone under that condition sometimes moves slower than a full release version of the phone and is meant to check and fix all the little pieces. Finally, the baseband version is similar on the BestBoyZ and the MobiFlip versions, but they aren’t exactly the same. This seems to point toward the idea that they aren’t the same phone, or at least that two different people in the world have this new phone and OS.

So what’s going on here? Something odd is going on. First of all, why would two of these new Nexus S phones be showing up all the way over on that side of the world before they popped up in the USA? Could they be allowed a quicker release there and are therefor tested there while we here in the USA have to wait for FCC filings to go that extra step?

Next, why are the baseband versions on the two German phones so similar, but not the same? And while we’re here, do you think this MobiFlip version has that same kernel version, if you had to guess?

Finally, do you believe this Android 2.4 is a real upgraded system, or do you think it’s a “glitch” like what happened / is happening with the XPERIA Arc?

We said it in the last post on this subject and I’ll say it again – I doubt they’ve got 2.4 close enough to release to be testing it already, especially since both 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb were JUST announced. This sort of thing can be mocked up easily, but then again, what’s the motivation for doing such a thing? I believe it’s possible that both of these German phones are testers, and that the FCC filing is the exact same phone. Will Android 2.4 be released by Mobile World Congress? No. Will this Nexus S be ready for Mobile World Congress? Yes.

Feel free to flop your opinion or any facts you’ve got below.

Verizon Introduces VCAST Messages SMS Application

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 10:20 AM PST

Let’s face it, Verizon’s VCAST apps are not usually ground breaking. Only offering up some core services that are attached to Verizon’s music and location services, they are usually overlooked. However, this time, Verizon has gone and released their own texting application, and it’s pretty decent.

On track to compete with Handcent and Chomp the Verizon VCAST Messenger allows users to send text messages, and the software isn’t actually terrible. There is an option for sending texts to recent calls so you can easily notify someone about your status if you just missed their call, as well as location based messaging and a group conversation feature.

Currently available for the original Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, LG Ally, Eris, Incredible and Fascinate, it may be a nice way to change things up a bit.

Rumors of No Honeycomb on Eee Pads Cleared up By ASUS

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 09:54 AM PST

One of the first big tablet announcements at this year’s CES was the new line of ASUS tablets, the Eee Pads. Shortly after their announcement, rumors began to hit the net that not only will they not be shipping with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, but their launch date had been pushed to Q3.

ASUS has taken some time and spoken with Tech In Style and cleared up rumors regarding the tablet series launch. ASUS has said that because Google has not officially released the specifications for Honeycomb, they could not guarantee support until further word. They expect to launch with the operating system, but they will not change hardware to support it as they also cleared up that they are still on track to release the tablets in April, May and June respectfully. So, if Android 3.0 Honeycomb is available and compatible, it will ship on the Eee Pad series.

There was also some speculation that because the device do not have phone functionality they will not be able to run the Android Market and ASUS may have to develop their own. This is also untrue, ASUS showed off the MeMo’s phone functionality and promised that their larger devices will ship with the Android Market because of Honeycomb’s intended use for tablets.

Android is Now the Leader of Mobile Ad Rankings

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 09:18 AM PST

The numbers are in, this time it’s Android’s mobile ad rankings that are making the news. According to Millennial Media, a mobile advertising platform, Android has surpassed Apple in ad revenue by a whopping 16-percent.

This clearly marks Android’s further push to market domination as not only is it the top in revenue for Q4 2010, but it takes the lead in share of all impressions with 46-percent.

Android is in the middle of its growth phase, while Apple is clearly in the mature cycle of its operating system’s life. Seeing a 3,130-percent platform ad request growth in 2010 alone, Android has grown significantly over the last year.

Hopefully, this growth will continue into 2011 with the wide array of Superphones showcased at CES, but as we do not know how much as there is now steep compitition as the iPhone moves away from its AT&T exclusivity.

Mystery Viewsonic 7-inch Tablet Spotted at CES

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:43 AM PST

CES is over and the dust is settling in the technology market, but that does not mean there isn’t any reportable news from the showroom floor. In fact, Chippy from CarryPad was talking to the Zino team and discovered they were using a mystery 7-inch tablet from Viewsonic at last weeks event.

Regretfully, there isn’t much further information about the device as they did not allow him to further look around the tablet, but from his time with the device we can see that the back is ruggedized.

Similar to the Toshiba tablet also shown off at CES, we’re expecting tablets built for daily life. With Mobile World Congress happening next month, expect further details of the device to start pouring in over the next few weeks and, hopefully, an announcement come February.

Additional Pictures of the Samsung Forte Arise

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:29 AM PST

Another set of images of the Samsung Forte have just hit the net. This time we’re lucky enough to see what the device looks like closed as well as the back of the phone itself.

If rumors are true, the device will feature a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor that will power Android 2.2 with the TouchWiz UI. Around back we see the rumored 5MP camera and what seems to be a MicroSD card slot.

We’re not sure if this is the same device as the previously leaked R910, but we will find out soon as the device is expected to launch on February 11.

Mystery Verizon Phone Found in Latest HTC Sync Update

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:22 AM PST

With the HTC Sync update a couple of days ago, there seems to be a mystery device hidden within the software. The HTC ThunderBolt is now official, and there is also a spotting of the Merge, but we can’t tell what this third mystery device is.

The device looks very generic. The phone has no capacitive touch buttons along the bottom, and the frame is a bit different than what we’ve come to expect regarding Verizon’s devices.

Because it looks so generic we’re immediately led to believe that this is just a placeholder for an upcoming device. Hopefully we will hear more about this mystery device as HTC pushes hard into the Android space after a few months break.

Acer Liquid Mini Passes FCC Approval, Coming to AT&T

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:15 AM PST

We first saw the Acer Liquid budget smartphone last week at CES. Now the device has hit the FCC complete with bands ready for the AT&T network.

The phone will sport a 2.3-inch HVGA display, 600MHz CPU, 512MB of RAM and will ship with stock Android 2.2. It passed the FCC with the proper 3G bands for use on AT&T’s network, but this doesn’t mean the carrier will sell the phone directly, and the phone may be soon sold unlocked.

>

Being advertised as a budget phone, it’s specs are impressive when compared to other entry-level phones and the Liquid will be a decent options for anyone looking for a cheap vanilla Android device.

Millennial Media offers device and maker details for December 2010

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 03:25 AM PST

Millennial Media has offered up its latest round of stats for the mobile phone market covering December of 2010. The latest round of numbers shows that Android devices occupy 16 of the top 30 spots for the most popular devices. That number was up from 11 of the most popular devices in November.

The most popular individual smartphone for the month was the iPhone with the Blackberry Curve second, the HTC Nexus One took fourth, and the Droid was fifth. The top manufacturer for the month was Apple, them Samsung, HTC, RIM, and Motorola. You can bet that many of the devices sold by HTC and Motorola were running Android.

As far as the device and OS carrier mix goes, 60% of the impressions for the month were from smartphones, 30% from feature phones, and 10% for connected devices. On the OS side the most impressions came from Android devices with 46%, iOS had 32%, and RIM OS had 16%.

Spotify & Shazam offer track ID & instant playback on Android

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 03:11 AM PST

Streaming music service Spotify has announced a deal with track-ID specialists Shazam which will see links between the two apps. After identifying a song with the Android Shazam app, a “Play in Spotify” button will automatically open the Spotify Mobile app and load the track there, along with any other content from that artist it can find.

You’ll need a premium Spotify account in order to use the Spotify Mobile app, and Shazam apparently are yet to add the integration support to their free app, but it’s said to be coming soon.

T-Mobile Face Slaps iPhone 4 on Verizon in New HSPA+ 4G Ad [Video]

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:36 PM PST

In this brand new ad made to make it look like iPhone 4 is a newb with two suited jerks who are terrible at running, T-Mobile uses a fancy lady to punch the non-Android competition directly in the nose. Take a peek as T-Mobile notes how totally slow 3G is and how amazingly blazingly fast their HSPA+ 4G network is in comparison. Actual speeds aside, this is a pretty good foot stomp.

They say the fellow with the blue tie on is ATT and the fellow with the red tie on is Verizon, saying of course now that both are the same – why would someone think they were different, they going the same speed on 3G? A good question to ask, of course, is weather they had these people ready to do an ad the day of the Verizon event, or if they had them film it before, several scenarios in tow. What’s up? Take a giggle peek:

Samsung GT-i9023, Possible Nexus S with Android 2.4, Hits FCC

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:23 PM PST

What in the world is going on here? The story goes – and note we’re sort of reciting what Engadget’s got on their mind before I give you a whiff of what we’re thinking – that this Samsung GT-i9023 (keep that number in mind) which is passing the FCC with AWS 3G (T-Mobile’s band), is the same phone that a weirdo group of German homies BestBoyZ were holding in a video that was also running Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich since the baseband version on the About screen is yes, you guessed it, i9023.

What does that mean? Maybe it means the new Android version is super close! But why would they release it so extremely nearby both 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb? Man I dunno.

Some more facts to toss in your bonnet:

This model number also recently recieved Wifi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG certification (both of these items being totally boring items of note.)

European retailers with the i9023 already supposedly in stock are listing this device as “Black Silver” Nexus S (which could just be a different case color, some sort of special edition, etc.)

The outline of the device in the FCC filing is essentially exactly the same as the Nexus S and the Nexus S has a very similar model number: GT-i9020.

The BestBoyZ video has the name Nexus S in the About screen, as well as Kernel-Version 2.6.35.7-gfed90c5 android-build@apa28 #1, Baseband Version I9023XXJL2, and Build Number soju-userdebug 2.4 GHR84 86467 test-keys.

NOTE: the userdebug note shows us that this phone is being run in, yes, User Debug mode, which is intended for engineering use (or, of course, hacker or developer use,) which could mean very many things – one of the first of which being this fellow could have popped a 4 after that Android version 2.x very easily. On the other hand, it could be an engineering thing – read: pre-release thing meaning this guy is either supposed to be testing this device in secret or has… you know… stolen it.

What you think?

Samsung Forte 4G LTE Android Handset for MetroPCS Leaked

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 06:44 PM PST

Take a peek at this simple looking little lady, one that looks very similar to a phone (the R190) that was leaked yesterday, so similar, in fact, that we’re not sure why MetroPCS would… you know… do such a thing. Two phones that look exactly the same and are – but the source this source is sourcing from (Samsung Hub) says that two are different.

And maybe they are! The specs seem dead on – Android 2.2 (with possible Android 2.3 upgrade), 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 5MP camera, TouchWiz UI and microSD card slot, but perhaps the hardware is just a tiny bit different. The R190 might not have a flip-out keyboard, the Forte does, the Samsung logo is below on the R190, the Forte has it above, and the R190 has a visible MetroPCS logo where the Forte does not. But these could also ALL be because image is further developed than the other. Opinions?

Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon Chips Coming This Year

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 05:22 PM PST

Dual-core processors were all the rage at this year’s CES. NVIDIA announced availability of their Tegra 2 processors in upcoming “Superphones,” and now Qualcomm has stated that their Snapdragon processors will be going dual-core this year.

However, they have not stated exactly when we can expect to start seeing devices ship with the processors. Many wonder if it will be worth the wait, and if Qualcomm’s delayed entrance will impact the company’s reputation. The answer is simple: no.

Qualcomm has several advantages over their competitors. They can not only provide the processor, but they can provide all the necessities such a the GPU and radios such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS, this gives them a huge advantage as phones can easily bundle all of this impressive hardware that works flawlessly together.

Hopefully we will see dual-core Snapdragon processors sooner rather than later starting with some powerful phones for the second half of the 2011 calendar year.

Samsung Holds Up 2.2 From Vibrant to Increase 4G Plus Sales?

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 02:36 PM PST

This news tip comes from a tipster speaking with Android Spin. That’s a tongue twister. They say this person is a reliable source inside Samsung and/or T-Mobile who says that some silly things are solidifying inside and behind closed curtains. He says that not only does Samsung have a fully functional OTA for Android 2.2 ready, but they’re not allowed to push it out to the public because it could hurt sales of the Vibrant 4G (aka Samsung Vibrant Plus). Additionally, he notes, the original Vibrant is currently already able to utilize 4G connectedness FULLY. Really? “Yes FULLY.”

Check it out, the text from the tipster is reproduced here in full (or at least in full as far as Android Spin is producing it:

Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our "Vibrant". Samsung has NOT allowed us to push the update OTA for 2.2 because they feel it will decrease the value of the upcoming Vibrant 4G +. While from a marketing aspect i totally understand, as the Vibrant 4G is what the original Vibrant should have been in the 1st place. But to shun off and bold face lie to customers is NOT what T-Mobile is about.

…Being that, Vibrant 4G and Vibrant have exactly same stats, added FFC and a new movie and the 4G. But i will tell you this, the original vibrant CAN utilize 4G FULLY. Yes FULLY. not what they are telling you.

Ugh that’s harsh! Does this mean that Samsung is to blame, or do you believe that it’s actually T-Mobile who’s responsible for the holdup? All of this is just so much to take, It’s so much drama it’s heart-wrenching! But wait, isn’t that Vibrant 4G supposed to be the one that’s coming packed with the movie [INCEPTION] in it?

Perhaps this is all a dream!

Installing a NAND Android ROM on a T-Mobile HD2

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 02:03 PM PST

Get ready to get technical. This is for pros, not newbs. If you need to know the difference between a pro and a newb, check out the video below the content in this post. If you are a pro, continue reading. A fellow with one of the greatest screenname/handles I’ve ever seen, Snarksneeze, has posted to XDA Developer Forums with a big fat set of lists showing the world how to install a NAND Android ROM on your T-Mobile HD2.

Incase you’re unaware, NAND is your phones internal memory. Recently there’s been more and more people being able to boot all sorts of fun stuff off their NAND memory instead of just their SD cards. This is a good thing, because the lower you boot, the more stuff you can do (like installing Android on an HD2, which is, of course, a phone that usually runs Windows Mobile 6.5. Simple stuff, but really really hard to do if you have no idea what you’re doing. Now take a walk over to the thread How to Install A NAND Android ROM On Your T-Mobile HD2 and learn – that is, of course, if you’ve got a HD2 to be working with. BUT BEFORE YOU DO THAT, remember to watch this video and learn if you are newb or pro. Serious.
