Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone Gingerbread UI Demoed On Video

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 11:09 AM PST

It seems like the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone is one of the top leaked devices of the last few years. A YouTube video showcases more features of the upcoming device that will be heavily focused on gaming and is expected for release this quarter.

From the video we clearly see the device running a custom overlay on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We also see the phone opening applications and scrolling through homescreens very smoothly, which would back up the rumor that not only will it be a very powerful device, the Gingerbread overlay will be very optimized allowing for a better end-user experience.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Hardware-wise it’s the same device we have been seeing for about a month. It’s definitely not thin, but in addition to the ability to pack impressive hardware, the larger device will allow for better grip when gaming. The PlayStation Phone is set for launch early this year, and although no official word has been said about it’s release, we’re expecting something around March.

Although the video isn’t new, it provides us with a further look into the operating system now that Gingerbread is official. And being over a month old and being that refined, it seems all we’re waiting for is an official announcement and release date.

LG Optimus 2X Rocks Quadrant Benchmark

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 11:01 AM PST

So this new superphone by the name of LG Optimus 2x – you know the one. A group under the name Techblog.gr has one in their grippers and have run it though the obstacle coarse that is Quadrant benchmark and it pretty much rocks the hardest, attaining a score of 2.391, of course blasting past the ancient Nexus One and Motorola Droid X. And guess what? This is only recognized as a single core device when it’s really double since Quadrant isn’t quite up to date yet with the Tegra 2 wacky party. Can you imagine the true power?

The LG Optimus 2X is still running Android 2.2 Froyo and this is a pre-production unit, so wow, double wow! That means the real deal will be even better! Oh my gosh, such anticipation our claws have never known. Nails a quiver!

You can pre-order this maddeningly powerful phone right now if you want, just £500 from Expansys gets you all signed up for one. What’s that you say? You’ve only got American dollars? Then it’s pretty much the most expensive phone ever produced. Right? Jeebus. You can also check out our hands-on review video in that same post. Check it out.

90-Percent of Compal Tablets Will Use Android

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST

Compal Electronics Inc., a leading maker of notebook computers, has predicted that over the next year, 90-percent of the 3.8 million tablets they plan to ship would not only be based on Google’s Android platform, but also use chips from ARM – offering up steep competition for Apple’s iPad.

President Ray Chen stated that the tablet market is exploding, and with it Google’s Android OS. Once we see Honeycomb, the tablet-centric version of Android, we can expect the appeal for an Android-based tablet to rise significantly, and hopefully pass Apple’s iPad in OS market share over the coming years.

He also goes on to state that now that Windows supports ARM chips, the company may also ship Windows-based tablets, but these were not included in his current forecast.

What do you think? After seeing Honeycomb in action at this year’s CES, do you think it’s a decent competitor for Apple and Blackberry’s tablet offerings? Let us know in the comments!

Android OS Outgrows Competitors 2 to 1 Through 2011 Says Canalys

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 09:49 AM PST

Research firm Canalys has released a press release predicting “Android will grow more than twice the rate of major competitors in 2011.” Powerhouse! Canalys notes that Android already claimed a 25% share in the worldwide smart phone market, they with 20 million shipments of the Google-based smartphones worldwide. Casting poisonous words like “fragmentation” aside, Android shipments grew more than 1,000% during the first three quarters of 2010 over the same three quarters in 2009. That seems like a lot to me, does it seem like a lot to you? When you call Android “fragmented,” Android gets ANGRY – you should make Android ANGRY!

Take a look at the entire press release below. It’s interesting how they go through all the ways fragmentation had the potential to hurt Android, but ended up being just fine as everyone kept up in one way or another and developers crashed through the walls to make Android an amazing worldwide phenomenon. Android to infinity and beyond, basically. Have a look:

Canalys predicts Android will grow more than twice the rate of major competitors in 2011

-Fragmentation will not limit Android growth
Palo Alto, Singapore and Reading (UK) – Thursday, 13 January 2011
For immediate release

Canalys today announced its projection that Android will continue to grow at more than twice the rate of its major smart phone competitors in 2011, despite market concerns over platform fragmentation and the arrival of the iPhone 4 on Verizon in the US. According to Canalys Q3 2010 estimates, the Google-backed platform already claims a 25% share of the worldwide smart phone market, with over 20 million shipments of Android-based worldwide.

'The growth of Android has been phenomenal, but so too has the number of related devices launched with different hardware and software specifications,' said Canalys Principal Analyst Chris Jones. 'This has led to the market perception of it as a fragmented platform, though we believe that growth will continue as the pace of Android OS upgrades slows.'

Since the launch of the original Android platform in September 2008, many versions have followed. Gingerbread (Android 2.3) is already Google's eighth update, with its forthcoming Honeycomb (Android 3.0) pad-focused release set to appear on devices in coming months. The platform's rapid evolution has required increased resources from both device vendors and application developers to support the operating system.

'The need to differentiate has pushed vendors to create customized user interface overlays for their Android devices,' said Jones. 'As additional investment is required to ensure compatibility with each operating system upgrade, this has hampered vendors' efforts to stay up-to-date with the latest Android iteration on current devices.

'Fragmentation affects all OS platforms, though it is particularly visible with Android due to the fast pace of upgrades that has characterized its growth,' said Jones. 'The problem has been less pronounced on competitive platforms, such as Apple's iOS, as devices have been able to support the iOS 4 upgrades since the iPhone 3G. Nokia has also sought to minimize its fragmentation issues by utilizing the cross-platform Qt framework.'

Vendors working on Android have leveraged the open source platform to push prices down and bring smart phones to the mass market. As a result, Android shipments grew more than 1,000% through the first three quarters of 2010 over the same period in 2009.

The platform has benefited established vendors, such as Samsung and HTC, but also enabled PC vendors, such as Acer, to enter the market with a broad product range spanning smart phones and pads.

'Vendors are trying to differentiate further on the hardware front, with faster and more powerful processors, as well as larger screen sizes,' said Canalys Senior Analyst Daryl Chiam. 'Last week, LG announced the first smart phone to support a dual-core processor, while Acer and Samsung showcased smart phones with screen sizes of 4.8″ and 4.5″ respectively.'

'With Android's momentum expected to stay strong, the installed base of Android-based smart phones and pads will rapidly increase – good news for developers,' said Chiam. 'To be successful, developers must be prepared to cater to the abilities of the different device categories, tweaking the user experience of their applications accordingly. This additional effort is well worth the potential benefit of broader application distribution.'

'To support developers, Google must also make substantial enhancements to the Android Market, including the ability to detect device platforms, highlighting the applications suitable for each, which would improve the user experience and increase the number of downloads,' said Chiam.

Huawei Ideos X6 Android Smartphone Revealed in FCC Filing

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 09:18 AM PST

An FCC application today reveals a rather plain (or should I say simple, and simply lovely looking) Huawei smartphone set to run Android. This is a previously unannounced phone and is also referred to as Ideos X6 / U9000. In the document it is written that this smartphone has a gigantic touch display, GSM/EDGE and AWS spectrum bands, works with Wifi, and has a camera with flash. Further details about the camera are revealed in the draft user manual where it says the camera is 5 megapixels and that the device supports HDMI out and has a mic! Just what I’ve always wanted!

AWS support on this device says to us that it’s going to be carried by T-Mobile. Again, this is an unannounced device, but generally filings come right around the time the first announcement is made – so pump it up! Everyone should have one big fat touchscreen on which they can tap – this is that!

Check out the full filing at the [FCC]

T-Mobile G-Slate Honeycomb Tablet in FCC Application?

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 09:04 AM PST

Take a peek at this, it’s an FCC application for an item by the FCC Model name of LG-V900. It features Wifi, AWS connectivity (making it compatible with T-Mobile’s US network,) and well, it looks like a tablet – oh and it SAYS it’s a tablet in the type. The only problem is the FCC filing that was filed back about a week ago, one that was also reported as possibly being the LG G-Slate: BE/V909 — the only problem is, the one in this post is LG-V900, and that one was LGV-909.

So which one’s it gonna be? Or are they BOTH the G-Slate? One with ever-so-slightly different specs than the other? And will they both be competitors with Motorola XOOM? We’re so pumped up to find out! Take a peek at this lovely video of the G-Slate, then go hang out in the Android Community Forums for more insight.

Playstation Phone Xperia Play to be Carried by Orange UK?

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 08:41 AM PST

So it appears that some “industry sources” have spoken with Mobile Magazine and have told them that Everything Everywhere will be singing with Sony Ericsson to range the brand new PlayStation Phone (aka Xperia Play.) The device will more than likely be placed on EE’s “Premium” brand in the UK: Orange. The device is also thought to be launching next month at Mobile World Congress.

A few more more than likely specs on the device: it’ll be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It’ll be using a new PlayStation app that’ll let users play all their favorite fabulous games. Players will have both the classic PlayStation controls on the outer, and gyroscope controls nearer the center. The phone will have a 1GHz Snapdragon Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM.

Samsung Galaxy Mini Pictured in Clear Photos

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 08:10 AM PST

Hooray for SamsungHub! They’ve got a source that’s just brought them this lovely set of images of what appears to be the new Samsung Galaxy Mini. It’s a cute little device that’s more than likely going to be released at Mobile World Congress next month. It’s number is S5570, it’s got a 110.42×60.76×12.68mm, and it’s green! Or at least one version of it is.

Some more bits: China's FCC-like agency has certified the device, it’s got a 262K 240×320 screen, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, and microSD card slot. It’s got a TouchWiz user interface and will be running Android 2.2.1. Yes please, thank you. Green will be the color I’d like too – unless you’ve got a yellow one stashed back there somewhere.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against T-Mobile and Samsung Over Lack of Froyo Update to Vibrant

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 07:13 AM PST

Whoa, escalation much? Take a peek as XDA member MicBeast files a class action lawsuit against both T-Mobile and Samsung over their apparent holding back of updates to telephones (specifically of Android 2.2 Froyo and 4G speeds to the Samsung Vibrant.) He says he’s secured a lawyer, filed the lawsuit, and have explained all issues with them (the lawyers) and they agree that he has a very strong case.

MicBeast says that Samsung and T-Mobile have broken the law! He says they’ve violated the law concerning Unfair and Deceptive Consumer Business practices in the following ways (his words):

they have continuously lied to us about the hardware,
and software reliability of this phone,
they promised us updates (to 2.2! Not the functionally dead JI6 2.1!)
over and over,
NOW they plan to release NEW galaxies
without updating the old ones they currently have
The GPS is clearly a hardware defect.
There are just too many issues with this phone
and the Customer service reps have been combative
even bullying and threatening customers!

a clear violation of US law

MicBeast says that everyone is to email him with any issues they’ve had with the Fascinate to his inbox at SinistaBeatz@GMail.com – and I’d assume if you want to get in on the case somehow.

Do you think he’s got a case?

Carriers and Manufacturers ranked on Froyo updates: HTC & Verizon winners

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 06:26 AM PST

Google gets blamed plenty for Android fragmentation, but the manufacturers and carriers shoulder plenty of the responsibility for older devices not getting newer versions of the open-source OS. ComputerWorld crunched the stats and has come up with a best/worst list of both: US carriers who are timely with their updates, and manufacturers who are on the ball with new firmware for their smartphones.

In carriers, Verizon takes top spot with 1/3 of its qualifying Android phones getting Froyo within the software’s first six months of release. Sprint and T-Mobile come in second and third, but AT&T takes lowly fourth place with none of its nine Android devices seeing a single upgrade between June and December 2010.

As for manufacturers, HTC grabs pole position, with half of its phones updated with Froyo, followed by Motorola and Samsung in second and third place respectively. Still, Samsung isn’t looking too pretty, with only one out of nine Android phones getting updated. Worse still are Dell and LG, with much-delayed updates, but in bottom place is Sony Ericsson, with zero updates and the news that the X10 range won’t ever see Froyo.

Droid Pro and Samsung Fascinate Receive Maintenance Update from Verizon

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 06:12 AM PST

Today (and yesterday, apparently,) Verizon is pushing out a maintenance update for both the Droid Pro and the Samsung Fascinate. Both of these updates will not include any new features for your phone, but will fix a bunch of bugs (most of which I’m sure you never noticed in the first place. You can feel free to either wait for the update over-the-air or manually grab a download and install yourself.

If you’ve got the Samsung Fascinate and you’d like to manually update your device, head over to [this page] to either read about the benefits of doing so or about how to do the download. The same of all this is true for the Droid Pro, except you’d better go to [this page] instead, because the other page is for the Fascinate, and this one’s for Droid Pro. Have a nice update!

Android NFC apps appear

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 05:46 AM PST

Near Field Communications or NFC has a lot of promise for everything from allowing you to pay using your phone to getting the shopper information on products and lots more. New apps for NFC on the Android platform are starting to surface and two of the first are Taglet and Enable.

Taglet is a Japanese language NCF tag reader that allows users to associate existing data with a tag and hold it in an online database. That means after the tag is read by the next person, the data is pulled up along with it to give more details and get around the Gingerbread read only limitation.

Another NFC app is EnableTable and it was developed in the US. The app allows restaurant owners to give out discount vouchers to customers when they pay to help get them to come back into the eatery. The coupons are delivered by the little folder that holds the users change or credit card to their NFC enabled Android device.

Compal says most tablets it ships to use Android and use ARM chips

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 05:37 AM PST

When it comes to the electronics and gadgets we buy a bunch of them are made by the same companies in China no matter the brand on the device. Compal is the second largest maker of electronics in the world for all sorts of makers and devices.

The company expects to ship about 3.8 million tablet devices this year reports BusinessWeek and of that number the firm thinks 90% will have two things in common. Those commonalities will be ARM processors and the Android OS.

Compal will ship some of the other tablets with Windows OS for ARM processors and does not count those units in the forecast. It’s no surprise that Android and ARM tablets will be on the market in droves this year and they will slowly eat away at the market share of the iPad.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 for Android Live Today

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 05:00 AM PST

Let’s talk about this GPS navigator system here, this app upgrade, but first I’ve got to let you know that the upgrade to TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 is only available today on AT&T accounts. Harsh, I know. This update has a list of upgrades, the key components of which begin with Multiple Route Suggestions – each time you bring up your route (or at least the first time,) you get a max of three different suggestions for ways you might go. Click the one you want and there you have it! Quick Search is the next upgraded feature, the user now able to tap the Quick Search box on the home screen and type a landmark, category, business name, or address, this search now also including predictive search technology! Neato!

Speech Recognition is here and expanded, working at a tap from the home page and including many commands such as "How's the weather?" or "How's traffic?" We’re hoping it also recognizes “how’s about a milkshake?” Map Overlays are sort of what I just spoke about above with the multiple route suggestions, only there’s one more thing – each of these overlays has information available at a tap. Information like traffic flow, time to get a place, and the locations of traffic cameras. Expanded Points of Interest now include more than 22 million US business locations including airports, historical landmarks, businesses, and basically everywhere else you can dream of.

Have yourself a look-see at a demo here:

TeleNav Enhances Driving Experience with New Version of TeleNav GPS Navigator™
Expanded Speech Recognition, Quick Search, and Multiple Route Suggestions features make it easier and faster to find and navigate to destinations

Sunnyvale, Calif. – Jan. 14, 2011 – TeleNav, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNAV), one of the largest global wireless location-based services providers with more than 18 million paying subscribers, today launched TeleNav GPS Navigator version 6.2 for select Android devices. The latest version of TeleNav GPS Navigator is designed to deliver a faster and more reliable way to navigate, search, and view maps on a mobile device. TeleNav has added new features such as expanded Speech Recognition, Quick Search, Multiple Route Suggestions, enhanced local search content with more listings, and overall improved application speed.

"With this release, we've made Navigator easier and faster to use, and also added new capabilities that allow the user to personalize their navigation experience," said Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president of products for TeleNav. "We're confident that when our users try this version, they'll immediately benefit from the enhancements we've made and enjoy the faster, simpler, more personalized experience."

A Personalized Experience: Multiple Route Suggestions and Commute Alerts
TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 now offers Multiple Route Suggestions and allows users to choose which route they prefer to take. Once a destination is entered, users are presented with up to three route suggestions overlaid on a map with route distance and estimated drive times. Users can review information for each route and select the option that best fits their personal driving needs.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 also includes a new user interface for the existing Commute Alert feature, making it easier for users to set and receive automatic alerts at a pre-selected time to show current traffic conditions along their daily commute. Users can choose to have these alerts sent via e-mail, SMS, or within the TeleNav GPS Navigator application to receive their personal daily commute information before hitting the road.

Search Made Simple
TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 includes Quick Search, a new feature designed to make finding local places quick and easy. Located on the application's home page, users can simply touch the Quick Search box and type an address, landmark, category (i.e. Italian Food), or a business name. TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 uses predictive search technology to suggest results as the user types their desired location. Quick Search eliminates the need to navigate menus in order to find and drive to a location.

TeleNav has included an expanded Speech Recognition feature, allowing users to press a single button on the home page and speak a command. In addition to the Speech Recognition commands available in previous versions of TeleNav GPS Navigator used for finding addresses ("1130 Kifer Road") or businesses ("Find gas stations"), TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 provides voice access to more information, for questions such as "How's the weather" or "How's traffic."

TeleNav has also made its local search functionality easier, faster and more comprehensive, adding millions of new Points of Interest (POIs) to its search database, giving TeleNav users access to more than 22 million U.S. business locations, historical landmarks, airports and more.

"There's nothing more frustrating when using a GPS product than to search for a location and not get a result. If a user can't find the destination they're looking for, the quality of the navigation features doesn't matter," said Dhanani. "We've put a lot of effort into ensuring that our users are able to find the destinations they're searching for."

Additional Features and Enhancements
In addition to multiple route options and search enhancements, TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 includes enhanced map performance and design, allowing for faster panning and page refreshes when users view the map screen within the application. The map view also includes one-click options to layer information on the map screen, such as traffic flow information and the locations of traffic cameras.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 also features a new POI search screen interface designed to make searching for business categories more simple. When viewing the POI category page, users are presented with an easy to read view of popular business categories and can access those listings with one-click.

Availability

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 is available immediately on the Android Marketplace to AT&T customers (as AT&T Navigator 2.2) using the Samsung Captivate™, HTC Aria, Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10, or Motorola BACKFLIP™ devices running Android OS version 2.1 or above. The application will be available soon on additional Android devices through other wireless carriers.

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:21 AM PST

If you are looking for a new sync service to try out for keeping all your info from various apps and software programs on computers and your Android tablet or smartphone a new offering is available. The software is called CompanionLink and Android users can use it now.

The software allows the use to sync all sorts of data between Outlook, Sage ACT, Lotus notes, Palm Desktop, GroupWise, and a lot more without needing an intermediary like Google that might not support all of the fields in CRM software like Salesforce and others. CompanionLink also syncs standalone Outlook data without an exchange server and the sync solution is wireless.

The software will work on an Exchange server to get wireless automatic sync. The one-time license fee for the software is $39.95 and the Secure Hosted Wireless service is $9.95 monthly. You can get a 14-day trial to see if the software works for you.

AT&T Dell Streak Froyo reportedly delayed again: “A couple of more weeks at least”

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:19 AM PST

The promised Dell Streak Android 2.2 Froyo update for AT&T-locked versions of the tablet, which the company had suggested would arrive this week, looks to be further delayed. According to an internal Dell email forwarded to Streak Smart, users shouldn’t expect Froyo for “a couple more weeks at least.”

“Sorry for getting back to you so late, but as you probably guessed we / AT&T are not releasing the update this week. I’d say a couple of more weeks at least. AT&T is pretty thorough in their QA sessions and that’s where we are.” Leaked Dell email

It seems the delay is around finalizing the Streak software to make sure it runs properly on AT&T’s network, though neither company is saying exactly what’s going on.
