An Illuminating Idea

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 01:05 AM PST

The Book Light is made from a solid translucent plastic body with integrated LEDs and doubles as a bookmark. You can recharge it and set the illumination intensity using touch controls. Like any polite night owl, partake in joy of reading without disturbing others.

A Twisted Outlet Extension

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 01:03 AM PST

Plug too big? Just flip it. AC adapter don’t fit? Just flip it. No idea what I’m talking about? I’m talking about the Flipi, an outlet extension with three sockets that pivot at a press of a button. Attach glowing stickers too so you know what’s actually plugged into each socket.

Backpack of the Future

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:50 AM PST

In the future, our electronic devices will be more than just rectangular screens in our pockets. They will be bolder and more integrated into the fabric of our lives – literally. The Androcell backpack is an electronic communication device designed with a "Cradle to Cradle" approach.

With an Androcell backpack, one can exchange, store, create, and view digital data and perform several basic tasks. A steady development of technology ensures a brief lifecycle for electronic products. This is why Androcell is a "Cradle to Cradle" design. The materials used are innovative and organic. At the end of its lifecycle, Androcell leaves behind technical nutrients and biodegradable waste. It is targeted at young adults who have a knack for gadgets and enjoy music with their travels. The design itself displays a bold personality. The "X" shaped brace derives its form from its function, however it gives the design a distinctive appearance.

The backpack features an interactive E-paper display that allows an individual look for every bag. The ribbed brace on the backpack has two major functions: first, it adds strength and durability to the bag; secondly, it emits light for safety at night (for example, when worn by a cyclist). The user can determine the light's colour. The glowing brace and the E-paper display bring the bag to life. Self-expression is limited only by one's imagination.

The shoulder straps also make use of the interactive E-paper display. The straps feature a touch interface linked to the items available on the screen. From here, one can browse, modify, and exchange files. One can assign hot keys, a remote, or images and videos to the display on the front of the bag-pack. One can also choose to share and transfer information by plugging a standard USB device into the clip of the waistband. The integrated speaker system allows one to enjoy music while outdoors. The shoulder strap also has a quick-share feature that allows the sharing of small amounts of data like name cards with other Androcell backpacks. When exposed to sunlight, tiny glitter-sized photovoltaic cells harness solar energy to power the device sustainably.

Providing the Third Basic Need

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:06 AM PST

Shelter is one of the three basic necessities — this is why this project exists, and this is why if it doesn’t work, something eventually must. Quoting UN Habitat, the designer of the project notes that the number of people living in slums is currently at 1 billion, and is likely to grow to 2 billion by 2030. Blocks House is an shelter project made to create houses of any size to accommodate a family. Blocks Houses are made of recycled Polyethylene, Polypropylene and can protect people from the elements at a low cost.

Creating a new pod (or Blocks House) is a process that requires only the molding of sets of two or three unique blocks, its inexpensiveness making it accessable to slum villages. Replacement pieces can be accessed, and old houses can be recycled into new ones. Blocks House relies on natural resources like daylight, air, and rain water harvesting ability, and is not attached to the land so that it may be easily dismantled and moved around.

Bicycle VS Predator

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST

The following bike is inspired by one of your humble narrator’s favorite films: Alien [1979 Ridley Scott]. I would say it should be more directed at the man who designed the alien itself [HR Giger] but it has a lot to do with the environment and the spaceship interiors, everything all encapsulated in one aggressive bike designed be Richard Malachowski and mechanically engineered by Cannondale. This is the exoskeleton loveliness of the Demon Downhill Bicycle.

This bike is special because where there’d normally be a traditional tubular frame, there’s a reinforced carbon fiber exoskeleton. This feature allows for different organic surfaces and gives the structure a strength it otherwise wouldn’t have had to such a degree. This exoskeleton allow allows the rider to reach the heart of the bike to reinforce the inside shell frame (for extreme jumping) and to store or attach a tool case without interfering with the outer shape.

I’d put a bunch of candy bars and Squeeze-Its in there.

Technical Details:
· Frame material: Carbon fiber
· Maximum tire width: 76.2 mm
· Head tube angle: 69º
· Seat tube angle: 64º
· Wheel base: 1185 mm
· Chain stay length: 457 mm.

Designer: Richard Malachowski

LED Array for Telling Time

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:02 AM PST

Yesterday the design community basically flipped its collective lid for the other Jonathan Frey watch we posted, one with E-Ink for a display. I imagine the response for this one won’t be QUITE as wacky since LEDs are cool, but E-Ink? That’s wild. But hear me out – you like colors? This one has that. You like fabulously simple time telling, so simple there’s not even any numbers on the face of your watch? You’re in luck.

This watch has a slight curve and a silicone piece for added comfort. Other than that, I’m sure you can figure out the rest. Can you see the the row with 12? See the row with 5 (counting one marker being no lights illuminated?) See the row with 9? All makes perfect sense.

Picture Perfect Shot

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 11:56 PM PST

REC is a delightful camera that gives the subject an equal opportunity to view his pose as the camera clicks the picture. A rotating display at the back of the camera slides out to show what's being captured in the frame. It may sound like a silly idea but I've had many good shots ruined because I trusted the photography skills of complete strangers. REC, you get my thumbs up!
