Notion Ink Adam Clears FCC, Ships Wednesday Posted: 15 Jan 2011 09:27 AM PST Check it out – Rohan has word that the FCC has cleared the Adam Android tablet, and will be posting that clearance today or Monday. This they say means they’ll be able to start printing (labels?) Monday and start shipping on Wednesday. If you’d like to search for the tablet in the FCC you can search with NI3421A01 as the Product Code, Guarantee Code: Y2G and 0020356499 as FNR.
There’s a bit of a story behind the code that I’ll just reproduce here because Rohan says it better:
Rohan also notes that they’re definitely working with some sort of “BIG Media group” that’ll allow them to get “LOTS of content for you” including music, videos, books, and magazines (along with Comics with LBX). — Does this mean this stuff will be free on the device? That’d be weird. He goes on to say that the 2nd pre-order has no started because they’re waiting for deliveries in the USA and Europe. [Via Notion Ink] ) |
Meizu M9 (iPhone Clone) ROM ported to HTC EVO 4G Posted: 15 Jan 2011 08:41 AM PST It’s come to my attention that quite a few people didn’t quite know what the Meizu M9 was, first of all, so lemme quick explain it. It’s a Chinese phone that’s basically a clone of the iPhone, but made with an Android OS. Simple, right? Here’s where it gets weird. Now that clone has been re-cloned (at least its insides) into a ROM and has been ported to the HTC EVO 4G. Why would someone do that? Because they COULD do that, that’s why.
This reminds me of a speech by the esteemed Chaotician Mister Ian Malcolm who famously said “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” You wacky XDA Developers are going to let all the velociraptors out to murder humanity! Take a peek at the thread on XDA [right over here.] Also feel free to check out more details on the Meizu M9 or hang a left over to the massive release lines post from when the M9 was set free into the world – OR you could discuss this wacky matter further in the Meizu M9 ported to HTC EVO 4G [WTF] thread in the forums. Android Community Daily Wrap Up: January 14 2011 Posted: 14 Jan 2011 09:28 PM PST Today was pretty epic. There’s a crapstorm going down and it’s right in the midst of Samsung and T-Mobile, but mostly Samsung. The Samsung Fascinate is the subject matter and the event is the no-show of an Android 2.2 Froyo update PLUS the telling by a supposed insider of how the Fascinate’s update is being held back so that the new version can be sold better. Today there was a backlast! A The Class Action Lawsuit in the morning, a little bit later in the afternoon a #NeverAgain Twitter Campaign, and in the evening the inevitable Samsung Response. That enough to tide you over? I hope so, all we’ve got to get through to see the rest of the links is this lovely picture right here!

Skype Acquisition of Qik Completed Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:51 PM PST Qik has been an extremely popular mobile video chat, mail and sharing application since its introduction which leaves no room for surprise that Skype wanted to acquire the company and all their technologies. Now Skype has fully acquired Qik and all its properties now belong to the video chat giant. “I'm happy to confirm that we've completed the acquisition of Qik. The transfer of shares and funds between the shareholders of Qik and Skype was completed today and Qik is now under the ownership of Skype. We're very excited about this move, and look forward to working together with the Qik team to make our mobile video products even better.” Skype first announced their plans of acquisition as this year’s CES. Now that the acquisition of Qik is complete they will use the software to integrate with their own services making Skype even more powerful. [Via Skype Blog] ) |
How to Buy an Android Device at the Worst Possible time Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:43 PM PST In a little Friday evening humor we present you with How to Buy an Android Device at the Worst Possible Time. We know it’s a little pro-iPhone, but we couldn’t help but post it regarding all the Samsung update drama going on now. What do you think? A little biased, but excruciatingly true? Do you think that it’s wrong? If so, you clearly don’t have a Samsung device. Happy Friday, everyone! [DroidLife, Via DesignDare] ) |
Verizon to Support 4G in 140 Markets by year’s end Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:34 PM PST We all know that Verizon is planning to aggressively enter the 4G market with extensive market rollout over 2011, however, we just didn’t know how aggressive they would be – until now. By the end of 2011 they are planning to be launched in at least 140 markets and expect to cover 2/3 of the US by the end of 2013. That’s a very extensive rollout, their end goal is to offer up 4G service everywhere that 3G is currently available as it’s expected to replace 3G as the standard in the coming years. Here is the list of initial cities that will be boasting Verizon 4G in 2011: Huntsville, Alabama That’s a total of 49 initial pushes into the 4G market for 2011, combine that with their already active 4G network and we see Verizon keeping its spot as the nations top carrier. SIM Unlock Your Galaxy S With One Application Posted: 14 Jan 2011 04:27 PM PST Unlocking is a process wanted by many and dreaded by most. Luckily we have helroz, from XDA, who has developed an application that will unlock your device for you in just a few easy steps that do not require extensive coding. The application will work with Galaxy S devices that shipped with Android 2.1 and has been throughly tested and confirmed working with these phones. In order to run the app, you will need to be both rooted with BusyBox and have an active internet connection. The process is simple, you just follow the 3 step process and watch as the phone will automatically unlock itself. If you would like detailed instructions as well as support check out the XDA Application Thread. [Via XDA] ) |
Samsung Responds to Vibrant Android 2.2 Froyo Hold Posted: 14 Jan 2011 02:23 PM PST If you’ve been keeping up with this epic debacle with T-Mobile and Samsung regarding the Samsung Vibrant, you know that Samsung AND T-Mobile have been accused of holding back a Froyo update from the Vibrant so that they might have better sales of the Vibrant 4G+. These accusations were made by a source inside either Samsung or T-Mobile. The response to this story was a torrent of comments and tweets and all that good stuff on how everyone hated the situation and both companies involved in it. Then it got interesting…
The first big response TODAY (this inside comment came out yesterday) was from a fellow on XDA Developer Forums who said he was initiating a Class-Action Lawsuit against both T-Mobile and Samsung over what he says are unfair and deceptive business practices. After that, there was a sort of response to that (and the Fascinate situation) in the form of a Twitter revolt! This revolt is still going on, of course, and you can find it on Twitter by searching for the hashtag #NeverAgain. Now here, not a half hour ago, Samsung has responded (to CNET who had asked them for a comment or statement on the situation.) Samsung said thus:
So actually… did they really say anything? Not really. These business types are really really good at covering their butts before they get legal-punched in the jaw, but it seems like they may have been too late, or perhaps even have gone too far this time. What do you think? Was their response enough to qualm your rage? This conversation continues in this subject in the Android Community forums: [Via CNET] ) |
Android Developers Set World Record for Blinkenlights Posted: 14 Jan 2011 01:52 PM PST What does that even mean, you might ask? It means that they all downloaded the app that’d allow one giant image to cross all of their screens, creating one giant screen, at once! This is the biggest matrix of mobile phone in the history of the world. Would you like to beat them? You can! All you’ve got to do is download the Blinkendroid app from the Android Marketplace on more than 72 Android phones, make the matrix work, and bam! You’ll be in the Guinness Book of World Records. Sounds pretty prestigious.
This event took place during Google Developer Day Deutschland in Munich, in November 2010. This event was briefly mention in a post we posted yesterday: Android Developers Outline World Tour, but we figured we’d give it its own post. Love it! To find this app in the app market, search for the word “Blinkendroid.” It should be the only app that pops up – developed by Andreas Schildbach. Check it out! And let us know how it goes – we’ve yet to try it! ) |
NOOKcolor Overclocked to 950Mhz STABLE, 1Ghz CHOKIN Posted: 14 Jan 2011 01:10 PM PST Behold the awesome saga of NOOKcolor. When I first set eyes on the ol’ NC first, (see those posts here,) I thought she was an OK reader, but she had a lot of potential that was going to waste. Sure enough not 2 days after I sent the NC back through the mail (I was only borrowing it, after all,) we get news that it’s been ROOTED. From there, it was a fantasyland of apps, workarounds, ROMs, everything you could want. Except for one thing. Noone had overclocked it, not even a little bit. Well that’s changed, and it’s changed today.
Actually the overclocking technically took place a couple days ago, but heck! Not many people knew about it until now. An XDA developer by the name of Geniusdog254 made a Flashable Overclock Kernel by the name of “She’s A Screamer.” Classy! He set it up so you and I and everyone could get our hands on it and use it on our own devices. He then tried it out on his own NOOKcolor. What did he find? The device overclocks to 950Mhz. NOOKcolor chokes out at 1Ghz, which Geniusdog254 decided is probably just happening on his device only, but he says 950Mhz is STABLE. That’s wacky taffy. Take a look at the whole thread over at XDA Forums and don’t forget that it’s spread over two posts, 1 and 2. Thanks dog! [Via XDA] ) |
Canada Doesn’t Care About the New Galaxy Tab Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:39 PM PST Really. They don’t even care at all. Why else would they only offer up a $100 discount to their Bell Samsung Galaxy Tab when the fabulous businesses like US Cellular who is doing a Valentine’s Day 2 for 1 deal, or Sprint who slashed their Tab down to a mere nubbin – $300! Clearly Canada plans on taking some of my stash of old Tabs that I requested upon the announcement of the new Tabs at Mobile World Congress.
I wanted my Tabs! That’s why I plan on blaming Canada for not receiving any Tabs when the time comes. I put in my request for a batch of Tabs when the announcement will inevitably be made that the new Tab will dominate the old one, and I’ve already got a theme song for it. Did you know that Robin Williams once sang this song at the Academy Awards? It was amazing! Ohh! I found it! [Via Mobile Syrup] ) |
Posted: 14 Jan 2011 12:19 PM PST Take a walk with me for a moment down a road into the future. Let us begin with a screenshot that’s just popped up on Engadget and originated from GizmoFusion (on the left, below.) It shows an option to Sync Music, this option set right beside options to Sync other things like contacts, Gmail, Picasa Web Albums, and Calendar. This screenshot supposedly comes from an advanced version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread – Engadget hypothesizes it may come from this fabled Android 2.4 (also Gingerbread) build we’ve been hearing so much about.
Next lets take a peek at the picture on the right: it comes from our very own exploration of a leaked Android 3.0 Honeycomb music player app. Here you’ll notice an option to Stream music (and connect to all music libraries) as well as Cache streamed music. What do these two options on different OSs mean for the future of Android music? I’ll tell you what it means, it means that somewhere in this massively exciting mess of operating systems and boxes to click, you’ll soon (or someday) be able to not only stream your music from the cloud, not only will you be able to cache that music so that you might listen to it without being connected to the internet (kind of like what WinAmp is trying to do as well right now,) but you’ll be able to sync your music in the same way you sync your contacts: instantly and painlessly. Or it might all just be a music store. Could Google be creating a music store? They’re getting into the ebook business – why not the music business? Heck, why not the whole media business? A movie and television show store on the way? Google could do that, sure! Why not? Again be sure to check out that Honeycomb Music Player Guide we’ve got, and get it for yourself! ) |
Samsung Android Customers Initiate #NeverAgain Twitter Campaign Posted: 14 Jan 2011 11:36 AM PST There is wacky unrest in the streets, Community. The people with their Samsung phones are freaking out, foaming at the mouth, and imagining chewing on the Samsung logo in their minds because they can’t think of anything better to do to show their rage! Then they started to get wise, maybe, by first creating a Class Action Lawsuit against Samsung and T-Mobile. Then, a fellow by the name of s15274n over on XDA forums has started up a Twitter campaign where people Tweet their complaints about Samsung, affixing the hashtag #NeverAgain to each to make Samsung understand the people! This is the most important cause of your LIFE, everyone. Rally together and FIGHT the people that are giving you internet and phone service. Do it now!
He lists this wacky campaign in a way that would make Stalin shake in his boots, Hitler’s mustache fall off, and Satan himself turn green! Take a peek at a clip of the massively Twittery campaign here:
Tune in next post for more Rocky and Bullwinkle! Also take a peek at the rest of the guy’s twitter post [over here] and beware when you search for the Twitter hashtag, half of the responses are about single parents who no longer want their children because they cry too much. Harsh. This conversation continues in this subject in the Android Community forums: UPDATE: Take a peek at the original thread on XDA for developments on this particular campaign. [Via XDA] ) |
