ClockworkMod Crew Warns of Bad 2.0 recoveries, Notes Official Release

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 10:37 AM PST

So you’re one of those people who not only can’t get enough hacking of your out of the box devices, but you can’t wait to get the official hacks as well! You are just nuts, I be you also decided to read the scripts for the Star Wars prequels before they came out in theaters. ClockworkMod scolds you! In a pair of tweets tweeted late last night, the crew warned everyone that downloading 3.0 recovery from anywhere other than ROM manager, you’ll be working with a version that doesn’t play well with ROM manager. Imagine that!

ClockworkMod’s Twitter account went on to say that Official 3.0 recoveries would be released for all eligible devices when their team nears an RC for ClockworkMod version 7. Hooray! But when is that? Hopefully not TOO far away, gosh, the real Android 2.x.etc will be out before you know it, then they’ll have to make another, then another, oh the humanity!

Lumigon T1 to be Released with Android 2.3

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 10:26 AM PST

Not since late October of 2010 have we spoken of this lovely little rectangle, and with good reason – there really hasn’t been that much news about it. It’s being made by Bang and Olufsen who are known for their high-end audio and video devices and even speaker elements in fancy cars, and now it’s this phone. This Android phone. This is the first phone in the world to use such tech, and the news today is that it wont be released with Android 2.2 as previously guessed, it’ll be out there with Android 2.3 Gingerbread right away!

Furthermore Lumigon has sent word that they’ll definitely be at GSMA in Barcelona – Mobile World Congress y’all! That means we’ll be there in the area and if we get a free moment we’ll be peeking at this little lady a bit closer for you all. It’s cute!

Angry Birds Valentines Day Edition Coming SOON

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 09:52 AM PST

Soon as in ON Valentine’s Day, how do you like that? This version is much more than likely going to be an upgrade to your already awesome Angry Birds Seasons game that’s already got a Christmas and a Halloween edition active. This super secret edition has been released via DW-TV (Deutsche Welle) via YouTube. The news fellow in the clip notes, “The designers and game developers at Rovio are currently working on new versions of their game, like this update in pink, due to come on the market on February the 14th – Valentine’s Day.”

A few additional details are mentioned in the video including the origin of the game, developments along the way, and the fact that the game originally had no slingshot and was apparently very confusing to play. CEO and co-founder of Rovio Mikael Hed says they’d like to take the characters and the universe that’s here in the game and expand it to more games, merchandise, and even TV shows and movies. Weird!

Xperia x10 Users Rejoice: All in One FlashTool Released

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 09:37 AM PST

As you might already very well know, hackin’ ain’t easy. At least for most non-obsessed aka devoted developers in this world, and that why when one of those awesome maniacs creates a tool that makes the whole process easier for everyone else, they get high fives, all around. Today there’s a couple of fellow by the names of Bin4ry and Androxyde who’ve created a tool for you Xperia x10 users that can flash original images (Android 1.6 and 2.1 images,) as well as root, install and recover, clean your ROM, and even clean your cache. Wowzers.

There is a note, a note that says that before you can flash, you’ve got to connect your device in Flashmode, and be sure to wipe userdata if you plan on switching between 1.6 and 2.1. If you do not wipe, you’ll be in for a real treat – endless restarting! Now if that doesn’t scare you, head over to the correct thread at XDA developers for the downloads and instructions: AIO FlashTool.

Android Faces Massive Lawsuit at Hands of Oracle

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 09:14 AM PST

No, not the one in the Matrix, the one that owns Sun Microsystems, a group whose Java codes Google appears to have been using without proper authorization in both Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread. This case appears to have definite footing as IP expert Florian Mueller brings forth 37 files discovered in Android 2.2 and 2.3 that were labeled "PROPRIETARY/CONFIDENTIAL" by Sun, and had a copyright notice file saying "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE!" This could be big, big trouble for Android and Google.

Furthermore, Mueller found a few more files in Android which look very likely to have been decompiled from Sun’s original Java code. Earlier in this case Google has argued that Oracle omitted copyright headers from several of these controversial Java files – it not appears that the company may have replaced the original proprietary license with a GPL 2 header even though Oracle may not have authorized such an action.

Mueller writes:

"Google said in its formal response that Oracle had omitted "copyright headers". That is correct, but now that I have seen two versions of the original file, I don't think that the missing parts are favorable to Google. Actually, the opposite is true. Whether under a proprietary license or the GPL, the related code could not be legally relicensed under the Apache license by anyone other than the right holder (Oracle/Sun)"

Looks like this could be a gigantic bummer for Google, and not only just for Android – for the groups using Android to sell massive amounts of phones, aka manufacturers, distributors, mobile service carriers… everyone has a chance to get hit really hard by this, including the webpage you’re reading this on right this second, Android Community. No more Android, no more fun.

LG Optimus 2X Gets Demoed in 20-Minute Official Hands-On

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:35 AM PST

The LG Optimus 2X was one of the key devices at this year’s CES. Being one of the first devices to be announced with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor, the device will definitely be the powerhouse it was rumored to be. And now we have over 20 minutes of video time with the device in a hands-on video from the official German LG blog.

The demo is quite lengthy, but it provides a detailed look at the upcoming devices power. Scrolling is smooth, folders open quickly, and all around it’s pretty refined. Now we can tell it needs a little bit more software optimization before it can fully utilize the Tegra 2′s power, but hopefully that’s coming before release.

Click here to view the embedded video.

For even more LG Optimus 2X coverage, check out our official preview of the device where we put the device to test with basic functions such as gameplay, HD playback as well as conducting a Linpack test.

LG Optimus Me Images Surface

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:12 AM PST

It looks as if the rumors of LG’s hard push back into the cellphone market in 2011 were correct. Another budget phone from the manufacturer has been leaked to the internet, this time coming in many colors.

The LG Optimus Me P350 will be another mid-range budget device from the company and will come in an array of 5 colors (pictured above). The device will sport a 3 megapixel camera, and a display resolution of 320×480. There has been no word on actual display size, but it sure doesn’t look all too big, so expect your media consumption to be on a separate device.

Most likely being planned to target both teenagers and entry-level smartphone users, the device is likely to be released with Android 2.2. And look at that, physical call/end buttons are coming back into style!

G-Slate Will Not Feature Glasses-Free Display?

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:04 AM PST

The LG T-Mobile G-Slate was announced at this year’s CES. And although it was greatly overlooked due to the fact that details were few and far between and no physical devices were present, it still will be a key player in the 2011 tablet war. Rumors started to pile in that the device would feature a glasses-free 3D display, and now this is being said to be incorrect, but it will have some 3D options for the user.

According to Android and Me, the G-Slate will not sport a glasses-free 8.9-inch display, but it will be able to take 3D pictures. Both LG and T-Mobile will be providing some 3D content for the tablet, but, just like any current 3D technology, it will require the use of glasses.

We’re expecting to see the device in Barcelona at this year’s MWC. We’ll be there with full coverage of the event, so stay tuned!

Verizon Disagrees With FCC’s Net Neutrality, FIles an appeal

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:57 AM PST

Verizon has made public of their opposing stance on the FCC’s net neutrality policy that had been finalized and approved last month. They are questioning the powers granted to the FCC by Congress and hope some court action will gain them their way.

Verizon issued a Press Release, and although it’s pretty vague and lacking key information we are made aware of their concern:

“We are deeply concerned by the FCC’s assertion of broad authority for sweeping new regulation of broadband networks and the Internet itself. We believe this assertion of authority goes well beyond any authority provided by Congress, and creates uncertainty for the communications industry, innovators, investors, and consumers.”

In a move to distance themselves from regulations, Verizon hopes the appeal will get the company out of the FCC’s reach. However, if the appeal is not successful Verizon will be monitored by the FCC as long as it’s providing internet by “radio, television, wire, satellite, or cable.”

Motorola XOOM Bluetooth Keyboard Pointing to February 14th Release?

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:47 AM PST

According to a listing on Amazon, Senyx will be selling a Bluetooth portable keyboard for use with the upcoming Motorola XOOM. The keyboard will be “in stock on February 14th, 2011.” Could this mean that we will see the XOOM on Valentines Day?

It’s worth noting that this is not an official Motorola-branded device, but the date has been hinted at a few times before on the internet. Interestingly, February 14th is the kick off for this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Hopefully this is true and we will be able to get our hands on both the XOOM and Android 3.0 Honeycomb here in the next few weeks!

Motorola Atrix 4G Gains FCC Approval

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:39 AM PST

The Atrix 4G, by far one of the most “jaw-dropping” devices coming out of this year’s CES, has just passed through the FCC. This makes us one step closer to the release which hopefully will be the first of March.

The device will be the “World’s Most Powerful Smartphone,” and will not only ship with extraordinary hardware (such as RAM), but it will be a docking phone making it truly a mobile computer.

The device was first shown off at this year’s CES to an overly eager crowd and it looks like it’s getting closer and closer to being in our hands! Who’s excited?

Froyo for Samsung’s Epic 4G is ‘Still in the Works’

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST

Another day, another update issue regarding Samsung. Just a day after we heard about the Vibrant 2.2 update that will be rolling out this week, Sprint has issued a statement regarding the update for the Epic 4G.

The statement reads:

“Epic 4G users: We want to assure you that Froyo for the Epic 4G is still in the works. … It is our intention to bring these updates to our customers as quickly as possible but only after they meet our rigorous testing criteria. We can’t provide any guidance on an exact or estimated release date at this time, but please know we are working to get Froyo out for the Epic as quickly as possible.”

Well, they’re working on it. Is this good enough? Do you feel that little updates like this to keep the consumer in the know about what’s happening is the way to go about things – or is the whole Samsung update procedure a mess you’d like to forget about? Let us know in the comments!

Google States Honeycomb is a Tablet Operating System

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:23 AM PST

One of the biggest mysteries of the Honeycomb operating system was if it would also be available for smaller devices such as phones. After the initial walkthrough at this year’s CES, it seemed that it might be able to function on a smaller screen, but an unnamed Google spokesperson has contradicted what we’ve heard and stated “…right now, [Honeycomb] is a tablet operating system.”

Now this could mean a whole array of things, but what seems to be truth is that Honeycomb, at least in its current form, will only be made available for tablet computers. However, Google has also gone and stated that bringing 2.x and 3.x together may be a good idea:

“I think that coming together [of 2.x for phones and 3.x for tablets] is a good idea. What we’re trying to do here I make a base platform that’s so good, that others only need to add native elements in their core areas.”

So we may be seeing the two operating systems merge down the road, but as far as specifics we’re left in the dark.

What do you think? Should Honeycomb stay for tablets and Android 2.x be the operating system for phones? Should they be merged into one super OS? Let us know in the comments!

EVO WiMax Issues? Check your RSA Keys With This Simple App

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:14 AM PST

If you own an EVO and are currently switching between ROMs, you may have noticed a bit of an issue with its 4G connection. This has been found out to be a problem with the “RSA keys” that allow your WiMax radio to function properly. The brilliant users over at XDA have developed an application that will check your device to see if these keys are present or corrupted.

These RSA keys sometimes can get corrupted after flashing recoveries and applying ROMs and all you have to do is make sure they’re in place to get your connection back.

XDA member joeykrim has developed a simple app that will determine if the RSA keys are still present or if they were wiped out in all your flashing fun. Getting them back isn’t impossible, but it isn’t simple, either – but the first step is to find out if the RSA keys are even corrupted or missing.

You can download the application, as well as get further information, in the XDA application thread.

Soundminer Trojan steals data by listening

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 05:35 AM PST

Researchers have apparently developed a new low-profile Trojan that runs on the Android OS that can steal data in a very sneaky way that will not trip antivirus software or alert the user to its presence. The malware is known as Soundminer.

It monitors your phone calls and records the person when they say credit card numbers ordering or paying for things over the phone or when they enter a credit card number on the phone keypad. The stolen details can then be shot back to the thief over the data network.

“We implemented Soundminer on an Android phone and evaluated our technique using realistic phone conversation data,” they wrote. “Our study shows that an individual’s credit card number can be reliably identified and stealthily disclosed. Therefore, the threat of such an attack is real.”

Sub-$100 Android and $10 data plan as T-Mobile takes on iPhone churn

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 03:11 AM PST

T-Mobile USA is planning sub-$100 Android smartphones and super-budget data plans in order to stem the flow of subscribers to iPhone-offering rivals. According to the carrier, around 10-percent of US churn – users leaving one network for another – has been down to subscribers wanting AT&T’s iPhone.

In response, the carrier has suggested it will offer an even broader range of Android-based handsets, together with a $10 data plan. No word on when we can expect to see this arrive, however.

Android Market now checks for touchscreen use as Google TV debut nears

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 02:33 AM PST

Google has added a new filtering option to software submitted to the Android Market, which looks to be a precursor to the download store arriving on Google TV. Developer Al Sutton spotted the change, which checks whether an app requires a touchscreen; that’s something you’ll find on an Android smartphone, but not on a Google TV device such as Logitech’s Revue.

According to the Google TV features page, Android Market access is expected to arrive early in 2011, opening the smart TV platform to a wealth of third-party apps.

T-Mobile Dell Streak 7 rumored pricing incorrect claims carrier

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 01:14 AM PST

The rumored Dell Streak 7 pricing calculated from apparent payment plan information on the T-Mobile site is wrong, according to the carrier. T-Mobile USA pinged us to let us know that the figures on the information page are the result of a “technical error”, and that there’s no official word on pricing as yet.

We’re guessing that means someone on the web team accidentally copied and pasted Equipment Installment plan details from another product page when putting the Streak 7 listing together. So, all guesses are back on as to whether the slate will drop at more or less than the rumored $330.
