Posted: 24 Jan 2011 07:00 PM PST

US Update: Nokia MeeGo tablet, Galaxy Tab 2, Duke Nukem Forever trailerWe've got an action-packed morning planned for you in this no holds barred world of tech. In this morning's US Update we break down the latest Galaxy S smartphone, drop the scoop on the Asus E600 Windows Phone 7, look at the rumored Nokia MeeGo tablet and much more.

Starting off your morning is the latest Galaxy S smarthphone, the Samsung Galaxy S Hoppin. Named after a new cloud service on South Korea's SKT, the Samsung Hoppin packs the proverbial Galaxy S punch. An unreleased Asus Windows Phone 7 smartphone, the Asus E600, has just appeared compliments of the ChevronWP7 jailbreaking team. The team received the handsets directly from Microsoft as part of their ongoing negotiation to make homebrew applications part of the platform.

HTC is projecting 8.5 million handsets shipped in the first quarter of 2011, down 6.9 percent from the 9.13 million units shipped in Q4 2010. To help boost shipments, HTC has doubled capacity at two of their factories. The first image of the rumored Nokia MeeGo tablet has surfaced. An image submitted to meego.com in the bug tracking section, shows what appears to be a seven-inch Nokia tablet running MeeGo.

Rumored specs for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 have emerged. According to the rumors, the Tab 2 will feature a 3D display, dual-core Tegra 2 processor and run Android 2.3 at launch. Last up this morning is a well-deserved trailer for Duke Nukem Forever. The trailer shows off plenty of game play, but please be advised — this game is for mature audiences and so is the trailer.

That wraps up things this fine morning from the states. Thanks for spending your morning with us as we break the headlines fresh off the press from our side of the world. Until tomorrow, this is Nick saying over and out.

Nokia MeeGo tablet spotted in the wild?

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 03:00 PM PST

Nokia MeeGo tablet spotted in the wild?We may be looking at the first photograph of the upcoming Nokia MeeGo tablet. The tablet is rumored to feature a seven inch display and built as a collaboration between Nokia and Intel. Is this the MeeGo tablet set to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month?

Compliments of a very poor photograph, we present to you the first image of the Nokia MeeGo tablet. According to mobile-review, this image was submitted in the bug tracking section of the meego.com website. Adjusting the brightness of the photo reveals a Nokia logo on what appears to be a seven inch tablet.

There's no guarantee that this is the Nokia MeeGo tablet, but we know Intel and Nokia are actively working on a tablet. If this is in fact the Nokia MeeGo tablet, then we've got our fingers crossed that it will be unveiled next month. Mobile World Congress would be the perfect stage for the Finnish giant to enter the tablet arena, don't you think?

HTC projects 8.5 million smartphones shipped Q1 2011

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 02:00 PM PST

HTC projects 8.5 million smartphones shipped Q1 2011HTC has just released their forecasts for the first quarter 2011, projecting 8.5 million smartphones shipped — down 6.9 percent from the 9.13 million units shipped in the previous quarter. Despite the slight dip in handset shipments, modest estimates show HTC shipments and revenue up 157 and 147 percent, respectively.

According to HTC, first quarter 2011 projected smartphone shipments are 8.5 million units and consolidated revenue is NT$96 billion. Compared to most analysts, these figures are quite conservative. Many analysts estimate shipments between nine and nine and a half million units and consolidated revenues of NT$100 to 110 billion for the period.

According to HTC Nearly fifty percent of HTC's NT$96 billion in consolidated revenue came from North America, another 32 percent from Europe and 17 percent from Asia and other emerging markets. Like Apple, HTC's demand requires a growth spurt in production. To meet this demand HTC will invest $32 million into its subsidiary, HTC Electronics (Shanghai), to increase its monthly capacitive of one million smartphones to two million. Meanwhile, HTC will expand the monthly capacity at its factory in northern Taiwan to more than four million smartphones.

At CES 2011 we saw the HTC Thunderbolt and heard rumblings of Android tablets. There's certainly no shortage of demand for HTC products and thanks to the increased capacity of two if its factories, HTC should be on track to turn 2011 into another record year. Anyone care to guess total 2011 HTC smartphone shipments (2010 is 24.671 million)?

ASUS E600 Windows Phone 7 smartphone leaked!

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 11:58 AM PST

ASUS E600 Windows Phone 7 smartphone leaked! An unreleased ASUS Windows Phone 7 device has been leaked, sporting the model number E600. Currently an "engineering device", the Asus E600 could be the next major Windows Phone 7 handset launch.

According to the ChevronWP7, creators of the first Windows Phone 7 jailbreaking tool, Microsoft has provided them with several unreleased ASUS E600 Windows Phone 7 devices (seen above). It is well known that Microsoft and ChevronWP7 members are currently working to provide support for homebrew applications on the Windows Phone 7 platform.

What we didn't know was to what extent Microsoft was willing to commit to the partnership. Based on the images (leaked by ChevronWP7 team members) and ChevronWP7's Rafael Rivera, the ASUS E600 is a non-production device, designed exclusively for development use.

The likelihood that this model could see a retail launch is bleak, but it may be a sign of upcoming ASUS Windows Phone 7 handsets planned for wide-scale production. From what we can tell, it's certainly not the most handsome smartphone to date, but we won't shy away from the possibility of more Windows Phone 7 handsets. Anyone liking the design?

Samsung Hoppin becomes latest Galaxy S smartphoneThe Samsung Galaxy S Hoppin has now launched on South Korea's SKT. Named after SKT's Hoppin service, a new set of Cloud services, the latest Galaxy S smartphone will allow media playback on the TV via a dedicated cradle. Here's the scoop on Samsung's latest smartphone.

Formally known as the SHW-M190, the Samsung Galaxy Hoppin packs the usual Galaxy S punch. Powered by a 1 GHz processor and featuring 16GB of internal memory, the capacity can be expanded to 32GB via microSD. Unfortunately, like all the other Galaxy S smartphones (Nexus S excluded), the Hoppin runs Android 2.2.

On the rear of the phone is as five megapixel camera. Inside there's a-GPS, T-DMB, WiFi, and Bluetooth 3.0. Keeping up with the Galaxy S tradition, a four inch WVGA Super AMOLED display graces the front of the phone. Other tidbits include DLNA support and a dedicated cradle for connecting the phone to a HDTV.

The 1940s themed detective thriller LA Noire will be hitting shelves on 20 May this year. It’s not a gruesome shoot em up, and asks gamers to read someone’s body language and facial expressions, to rifle through your notebook before you sink some lead into someone’s kneecaps.

You’re Ken Cosgrove from Mad Men (the actor was actually used for the part), transported into the guise of detective Cole Phelps, and this trailer was built entirely from in-game footage.
