Future Photography Contained in a Really Small Lens

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 06:44 AM PST

The Funamizu is back with another concept. Inspired by the WVIL concept camera shown at this year’s CES, Mac Funamizu envisaged a similar device in a slimmer package. The idea revolves around a lens system that is totally self contained with everything needed to take SLR quality photos. It wirelessly transmits the images to a hub device – in this case, a transparent screen.

Icy Lotus

Love me a fun ice cube y’all and the Ice Lotus ice cube tray is the sleekest looking of them all. Made of black rubber and stainless steel, it looks like a lotus pod. Smash the rubbery part with your hand and the “ice seeds” eject into the steel bottom.

The 2011 iF concept design Showcase on Yanko Design – Part III

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 05:38 AM PST

Welcome to Day 3 of the 2011 iF concept design Showcase. The journey so far has seen us display many new concepts and some refined designs. Putting David Craib’s word to perspective: Design should never say, "Look at me." It should always say, "Look at this." Let’s jump in and refresh ourselves with projects that say “look at this!”. For those who missed it, catch Day 1 and Day 2 here.

Please note this is just a shortlist, winners will be announced at a later date.

Invisible Chairs for Childlike Designers

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 12:04 AM PST

If you’ve got all your industrial design history in order, you’re aware of the magnificent Phillipe Starck. If you’re familiar with mister Starck, you might also be familiar with his awesome chair by the name of Mr Impossible – this chair is made entirely of transparent plastic and appears to be too wild to be true. Of course now we know that plastic can easily do such a thing, but back when it was invented, Mr Impossible really seemed impossible!

Now what designer Paul Sandip wants to do and has done is a tribute chair, or set of chairs, paying homage to the great father-figure-designer. See here a chair with four legs and transparency up the wazoo, made in three iterations: imagination of a painter, curiosity of a scientist and the enigma of a magician.

Note – these chairs are active. Each one has a mass of polystyrene balls inside, they reacting to shaking and electrostatic energy. Lots of fun for that wacky running all around the house kid on carpet!

Sound in One Direction

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST

Are you interested in the sonic? How about the supersonic? How about the… ultrasonic. Behold what designer Adam Moller calls “Klang Ultrasonic Speakers,” a vision in gold and black. These speakers are a pair that emit low-level ultrasound from a node attached to a dish. When this happens, this node’s relative location to the focal point of the dish determines where the signal will spread.

You’ll be able to, with these speakers, control where the sound is heard by adjusting the signal’s spread via these nodes. Like to blast some sounds, but only in one direction? No problem. Moller notes: “True binaural sound is also achieved as only the left ear hears sound from the left transmitter, and only the right ear hears sound from the right transmitter; depending upon the placement of the transmitters, of course.”

Lovely work!

Incompletion and Complete, For Sitting

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST

Behold for before you is a couple of designer bits of furniture that require a bit of explanation before you can fully understand or appreciate them. First, it’s recognized that essentially, every bit of matter is both full and a piece of something larger than itself. In this vein of thinking comes a set of two (two for now, more for later) pieces of furniture with parts of their bits missing. One is a bench, the other a stool, both of them crafted to perfection.

The process the designers use for this project goes like this:

Choose,
Change,
Compound

In the case of this stool and this bench, the bit chosen to be replicated or straight up borrowed from other designs is the legs – the legs made to appear etched out of the larger bit of wood, each of these makes for a stunning visage.
