Look Before You Leap, Think Before You Design! Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:31 AM PST 99% of the time we are very defensive about the designs we feature. We tend NOT TO highlight their flaws as long as we know there was effort, and c'mon no one is perfect! Having said that, the Box Cutter falls into the 1% category. It is a simple cargo box with an integrated cutter. The theory being you never find the paper cutter when you really need it, but hold on a second… You can't integrate sharp objects into packaging…it is against the LAW, especially in air-cargo! Essentially a very clever design is wasted! This is why we all need to look before we leap and think before we design! Designers: Sangyong Park, Taehan Kim & Jaeyun Lee ---------- |
Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:27 AM PST Special Teatime is a braille embossed thermos to aid the visually impaired in making the perfect cup of tea. The fancy art of brewing different kinds of blends is made easier with the help of a special infuser compartment that dips the teabag into the water and lifts it at the right timed interval. Here's to a refershing cup of tea. Cheers! Special Teatime is a 2010 Red Dot Concept Award winning entry. Designer: Halim Lee ---------- |
Shave with a Flick of a Finger Posted: 20 Jan 2011 01:20 AM PST Ring-shaver is a small, tube-shaped shaver that slips over the finger. In comparison to traditional shaving, Ring-shaver allows a more flexible shaving action. A toggle switch activates the flywheel to provide the necessary driving force. Ring-shaver does not require charging. It saves energy and is easy to carry. Great for sparse facial hair. Ring-shaver is a 2010 Red Dot Concept Award winning entry. Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST Some days you just have to go simple. I know that you know if you read posts by me specifically, you’ll find a lot of flipping out over how amazing simple design can be. Minimalistic design is my favorite. Today, I’m privileged to present a bench so simplified, I don’t think there’s a way to improve upon it. How about that? This is the all wood BOTANIST bench, from Orange22. There are two finish options available on this simple sitter, one Satin Walnut Finish (BOT-BEN-WAL), the other Satin Rift Oak Finish (BOT-BEN-RIFT), and both are made of sustainably cut wood (which I assume here means it was made from trees that were cut down and replaced by new trees,) and are completely American made. Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST How many people you know are so devoted to a single design that they build their whole company, their whole life around it? A designer by the name of Jonathan Ward has done just that, having started a business with his wife Jamie that turned into the nations leading Land Cruiser Service center in 1996, they eventually caught the eye of My. Toyoda who asked them to create three running prototypes of what became the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. What happened in between there to make this wondrous dream unfold, and what went on afterward? After the couple’s business “TLC” provided sales, service, parts, and restoration to the Land Cruiser community for several years, Jonathan began to work as a consultant for Toyota and the company began working on special projects for Toyota like outfitting vehicles for special events. This is where Mr. Toyoda asked Jonathan to create the three prototypes, and Jonathan did so, paying homage to the original Land Cruiser tradition in his original sketches than what ended up becoming the 2007 FJ Cruiser. It was at this point Jonathan and crew asked themselves what might happen if they were to “revisit the FJ40 [their] way.” From there they created ICON, a brand new vehicle “without peers for a journey without boundaries.” This vehicle has several models, each of them with classic styling, modern performance, and timeless utility. Sounds alright to me! Jonathan adds the following note:

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:03 AM PST Take a peek at this record player. It’s the kind that plays vinyl records, the 12″ kind, and it does it well with only the bare minimum. Fantastical! It’s called “Turnstyle” and it’s made up of the motor, the needle, the speakers, and the controls. What more do you need? It’s a skeleton of its former self, and not former as in it was stripped, former as in there’s no reason to ever go back to more! This project is designed by RD Silver, a designer who has the guts to take away everything but the guts. The requirements for function set upon this project were the following: spin record, on/off, volume, speaker, and needle. As far as design requirements: no corners, no hard edges, no 90 degree angles. Simple? Simple. Send me 10. Designer: R.D. Silva ---------- |
