In-App Billing Coming to Android This Quarter

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:54 AM PST

The final point at today’s Google event was that Google is readying the ability to support in-app purchases. In a very great move for developers, the ability will allow them to charge for additional levels, consumables, and other after-purchase needs.

The ability has been in other mobile platforms for quite some time and really attracts developers as they can create a more constant stream of revenue. In-app purchases will be done through Google’s servers just how purchases are handled now.

Google plans to implement this feature soon and applications such as Jelly Car and Tap Tap Revenge are ready to support it as they move to the Android platform. Tap Tap Revenge will be ready for release this spring when in-app billing is made available for the Android platform.

Developer information as well as the code for in-app billing is now available in the Android SDK, and in-app purchasing will be made available before the end of this first quarter.

Android Market Web store Announced, Purchase Applications On the Desktop, Send to Phone

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:44 AM PST

The Android Market Web store has been announced and is ready for release today. The system will allow users to purchase and download content from a web browser and then send the applications to their device.

To get to the web store, navigate to http://market.android.com. Here you can browse applications just as you would on an Android device.

When you click on the “Buy” button on the web page, you will be presented with the option for which device you would like to send the application to. The purchase dialog would then appear asking to confirm the purchase. Once the credit card transaction completes, the application will be sent (via cloud) to the devices that were selected.

Google Talk Video Chat Demoed at Honeycomb Showcase

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:29 AM PST

Google is pushing video chat for the tablet market. Honeycomb will have video-chat built it with Google Talk. Something that has been quite overlooked is Google Talk’s video stabilization. They not only developed this for a better end-user experience, but the technology will help with bandwidth, which will help great amounts when on a cellular network.

The demo on stage was met with a problem involving the user not being online for chat, but they did end up demoing that video chat was up and working. Video chat looked pretty seamless, when the other user is online, the chat is initiated with a few simple clicks and then you’re presented with your video while it connects to the other user.

‘Google Body’ Coming to Honeycomb

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 10:27 AM PST

Google today demoed its new application Google Body. Based off of hardware-accelerated 3D rendering software running on Honeycomb, it will bring human anatomy to the masses.

Google Body is said to be the Google Maps of human anatomy. Similar to Maps, Google Anatomy will feature layers. These layers include muscles, circulatory system, and the skeleton and Google is seeing them to be used for leisure and for use if you need to tell your doctor exactly what you broke or where you’re hurting. The demo was short but we can definitely expect to see more of this in the coming weeks.

Google has taken the stage to demo the Honeycomb operating system. We got a full live view of how notifications will work within the tablet OS and Google is focusing on making the notifications less intrusive all while making them provide more information at a glance.

The notifications system has been completely redesigned. In Honeycomb notifications include more information due to the extra real estate. Google has also built some templates to allow developers to create more immersive notifications.

The notifications are all in the lower right, and clicking on the area will bring up the entire notifications window that will allow you to get rid of old notifications as well as basic features such as airplane mode, etc.

‘The Daily’ Publication Coming to Android, States “This year and maybe next year belong to Apple”

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 09:05 AM PST

Let’s face it, we’re in a digital age. Newspapers and magazines are seemingly going the way of the wind and are quickly being replaced with the internet. Realizing this, News Corp. took to the stage today in New York to offer up their new news solution: The Daily. Although only launching on the iPad, for now, it was said that they are well aware of the emerging market and it will hit other tablet devices soon.

During the Q&A and today’s event, The Daily owner Rupert Murdoch, confirmed News Corp has interests beyond the iPad. However, he goes on to state that “this year, and maybe next year, belong to Apple.”

It’s good to know the major news corporation has their mind set on all tablets, and hopefully Honeycomb, being an official tablet OS, will entice them to make the move to the Android platform here soon.

Dungeon Defenders Updated to 4.0

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 08:43 AM PST

Just last week Dungeon Defenders v3.0 was submitted to the Apple App Store for approval and the Android version would be released upon approval. However, this didn’t pan out and V3.0 was not approved – so we get v4.0 along with a new array of features.

The exact details are being kept quiet until the application is approved, but Trendy Entertainment’s Jeremy Stieglitz did mention a few changes on the company’s website. First off, everything that was set to launch in v3.0 will launch in addition to the changes in v4.0.

The game will be updated with new levels, game modes and even a new shopkeeper. Speculation includes that pets will be available for purchase via mana from the new shopkeeper. As for the new game modes, we know one of which is titled “Competitive Mode,” but details to what it entails are quiet at this time.

Expect the update hitting the Android Market here in the next week or so, along with an official changelog.

Motorola Milestone X Coming To Bluegrass Cellular

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 08:29 AM PST

Bluegrass Cellular is sure getting devices lately, first with the Samsung Gem and now their website has been updated to include the Motorola Milestone X. As you can see from the image on the website, the Milestone X is clearly the unbranded version of the DROID X.

The device will, of course, come with a 1GHz processor, 4.3-inch touchscreen, and everything else the DROID X boasts – minus the branding. The device is listed as “coming soon” and should be made available in the coming week or so with a 2-year contract.

Anyone interested?

Samsung Bringing Back Sliders with Leaked Android QWERTY for Sprint

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 07:52 AM PST

Remember sliders – what seemed to be the thing of the early 2000′s before smartphones came mainstream and pushed them into the history books? Well, it looks like Samsung is readying the release of a new Android-based QWERTY slider for Sprint as some images of the device have hit the web.

Obviously taking some design elements from a BlackBerry, this new device will be powered by Android rather than the former standard Windows Mobile. No word as to when the device will be made available but expect some sort of release (although probably not big) at the Sprint event on February 7th or MWC in a couple of weeks. We’ll be live at both of them – so stay tuned!

Fascinate’s Emergency Call Button with software SCH-i500.DL09 May Not Function – Fix on the Way!

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 07:29 AM PST

Well here’s an interesting bit of information from Verizon. Apparently users are getting a free VZW text message informing them that the emergency call button on the Fascinate may not function when the phone is locked. This applies to the currently available SCH-i500.DL09 software build and a fix will be pushed “soon”.

The message reads:

Free VZW Msg(s) – Use of your emergency call button on your Fascinate phone with software SCH-i500.DL09 may not work while the phone is locked. A software fix will be pushed to your device soon. Until available, disable pattern lock to ensure emergency calls can be placed. To check your software version press Applications>Settings>About phone and view Build number. Only version SCHi-500.DL09 is impacted by this issue. Versions SCH-i500.DI01 and SCH-i500.DH12 are functioning properly. To disable pattern lock press Applications>Settings>Location & Security and remove check from Require Pattern.

So if you have a Verizon Fascinate, it’s recommended that you disable pattern lock until you receive the new update to place emergency calls. Anyone else get this message?

HTC ThunderBolt Coming “Sooner Than Expected”

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 07:17 AM PST

It appears that the February 24th release date for the HTC ThunderBolt from Verizon just wasn’t soon enough. Verizon’s just sent out a tweet telling the world that “many have waited for the iPhone” but that it doesn’t matter since the ThunderBolt will be out, yes, “sooner than expected.” Maybe they’ll have em today at the Google event? Nah.

Take a look at where the ThunderBolt gets shivved into the points board in a column by the name of Shooting for the Middle. Or you could check out a quick walk-through of the device. Then you could take a peek at the fact that it’ll have talk and data at the same time.

Is the Samsung GT-I9003 a Galaxy S with Super Clear LCD?

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:25 AM PST

Last month we started hearing rumors of a device making the rounds with a GT-I9003 model number. Speculation led us to believe that it was either a Nexus S with a Super LCD display, or a Galaxy S with the same display. Now, after further speculation, it seems the later will be true and that the I9003 is on track to replace the Galaxy S (I9000).

The device is said to be the same internally with the only difference being the Super AMOLED display will be replaced by Super Clear LCD. This makes perfect sense as the Galaxy S2, confirmed to have an AMOLED, will need the display resources, and cutting them from the I9000 in a new model would be the best business option.

LG Readying to ‘Rewrite History’ with the Optimus 3D

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:06 AM PST

LG hasn’t been a key player in the phone market for quite some time, but they fully expect to change that in 2011 with device launches such as the Optimus 2X and Optimus 3D. Not only are they entering the smartphone market; they’re entering it aggressively. In a new teaser published by LG, they boast “The World’s First Dual Core-Multi Channel” device that looks strikingly similar to the LG Optimus 3D we saw leaked last week.

The ad seems to focus on the upcoming Optimus 3D even though its 3D capabilities are not shown off (this must be the “unexpected” jaw-dropping announcement they’re holding until the press conference).

Click here to view the embedded video.

It seems companies, such as LG, are becoming more and more concerned about the hype regarding the release of a device. They know they have an audience, so they will tease and leak until they feel the public knows just enough about the device before its launch at an official press conference. We’re not complaining!

T-Mobile Activates 8 New HSPA+ Areas, Planning to Push Hard into 4G Market for 2011

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 05:50 AM PST

T-Mobile is sure pushing into the mobile 4G market. With the 2 devices detailed yesterday: the G-Slate and the Galaxy S 4G, they are going to be an aggressive competitor in the 4G war of 2011. However, we were informed to an overlooked segment of the G-Slate announcement; T-Mobile has also turned on their HSPA+ network in 8 new areas.

T-Mobile's 4G network, America's largest 4G network, has expanded into more than 100 major metropolitan areas, reaching more than 200 million people nationwide. Beginning today, T-Mobile's network is also delivering 4G speeds to Albany, Augusta, Columbus and Macon, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn., in the South region as well as in Champaign, Ill.; Lansing, Mich.; and Rochester, Minn., in the Midwest. In addition to the expanding its 4G footprint, T-Mobile has aggressive plans to double the speed of its 4G network in 2011. T-Mobile expects that 140 million Americans in 25 major metropolitan areas will have access to these increased 4G speeds by midyear.

4G was activated in the following:

  • Albany, GA
  • Augusta, GA
  • Columbus, GA
  • Macon, GA
  • Chattanooga, TN
