| US Update: Skyfire sale, Xoom pricing, Droid X 2 Posted: 16 Feb 2011 07:03 PM PST
iPhone and iPad owners looking to expand their web browsing capabilities, look no further than Skyfire. The highly-successful browser is now on sale until February 18, grab your copy today. Motorola chief executive Sanjay Jha has confirmed to Reuters, the Motorola Xoom WiFi + 3G model will be $799 and the WiFi only, $600. Warner Bros. has released two new movie apps (The Dark Knight, Inception) allows streaming and download of both films from within the app. Is this the solution for getting around the iTunes movie restrictions? Apple is now the number one mobile PC vendor worldwide with 17.2 percent market share after shipping a reported 10.2 million units in Q4 2010. Can you guess who came in second? Last up this morning is a leaked image of the Motorola Droid X 2, the successor to the Droid X. Unfortunately without a front-facing camera or 4G LTE support, it looks like the Droid Bionic will retain top honors as Motorola's flagship CDMA handset. That wraps up the latest and greatest in tech news for the morning. As always, I'm Nick Marshall and I'll see you again tomorrow. Related posts:

| Motorola Droid X 2 leaked: aka Droid Bionic junior Posted: 16 Feb 2011 06:50 PM PST
Matching the Droid X form factor, the X 2 (pictured above) runs Android 2.2 Froyo with Motorola's Motoblur UI overlay. Like the form factor, the camera remains unchanged, still the same, yet nevertheless impressive, eight megapixel shooter. The display has been upgraded to the same 4.3-inch qHD 960 x 540 pixels as the Droid Bionic. Also, a 1 GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor with 1 GB of RAM should provide the power to meet the need for speed. As package, these rumored specs seem quite nice. Noticeably absent are a front-facing camera and LTE 4G support. At this stage in the game anything besides Android 2.3 Gingerbread is troubling. There's no guarantee when it comes to an official update — if you don't believe me, ask a Motorola CLIQ owner. While the qHD display and dual-core processor are excellent, the lack of a front-facing camera and 4G LTE support hurts. Hopefully Motorola will price this bad boy aggressively, otherwise there's little reason to forgo the Droid Bionic's dominating prowess. via Engadget Related posts:

| Apple takes crown as number one mobile PC vendor Posted: 16 Feb 2011 06:28 PM PST
Windows is clearly the dominating player in mobile PC shipments with four of the five brands running their OS. However, Apple maintains a loyal customer base — ready and willing to spend. Combined with a growing percentage of first-time Mac users, the company is experiencing tremendous growth. At the other end of the spectrum you have HP who relies heavily on Windows Phone 7, but thanks to the acquisition of Palm we'll have plenty of webOS products later this year. The remaining players, Dell, Toshiba and Acer, also offer or plan to offer tablets in 2011. With the introduction of the new MacBook Air, an update for the MacBook Pro line up, and the success of the iPad, it's easy to see why Apple dominates mobile. 2011 will be the true test for Apple as CES 2011 revealed more than 50 new tablets coming to market. So, now it's time for you to chime in. Will Apple continue with top honors in worldwide mobile PC shipments in 2011, or will the growth of Android and webOS prove to powerful? via Ubergizmo Related posts:

| Warner Brothers evades iTunes with Dark Knight and Inception movie apps Posted: 16 Feb 2011 06:02 PM PST
We have to give Warner Brothers credit — the Dark Knight and Inception movie apps are quite clever. Both apps, available in 35 countries, are free and offer five minute previews of both films, along with games, trivia, and extra material to browse. Ironically, 23 of the 35 countries which can download the app are not able to download either movie directly from iTunes. Enter, the movie apps. As you can see from the screen shot above, there are two options inside the apps: play (streaming) or download. If your Internet connection permits, you'll be watching either movie on your iPhone or iPad in no time. If you decide to purchase the films, The Dark Knight will set you back $9.99 and Inception, $11.99 (in the US).
The price isn't exactly stellar, but at least 23 countries now have a solution to their iTunes woes. Anyone planning on downloading either film with the app? Feel free to sound off. We expect other movie studios to follow suit with their own streaming movie apps shortly. Related posts:

| Sanjay Jha confirms Motorola Xoom $799 pricing Posted: 16 Feb 2011 05:39 PM PST
If you want the full WiFi + 3G experience, your unsubsidized cost of entry will be $799 on Verizon Wireless in the US. For those of you riding the web with WiFi hotspots, you'll save a cool $199, with the $600 WiFi-only price tag. Similar pricing is expected throughout Europe. Now that the rumors have been laid to rest and we have concrete pricing, it's time to render a verdict. Is the Motorola Xoom priced to sell or priced to fail? With the iPad 2, HTC Flyer, HP TouchPad, BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and dozens of other tablets to choose from, how do you choose a winner? It appears Apple may have spoiled us with a $499 WiFi-only iPad. via Reuters Related posts:

| Skyfire for iOS two day sale ends Friday, February 18 Posted: 16 Feb 2011 04:14 PM PST
Skyfire for iPhone, normally priced at $2.99, will be $1.99 until Friday morning. The iPad version will also be discounted $1.00, down from $4.99 to $3.99. This 48-hour sale is the perfect opportunity to join the more than 300,000 iPhone users and 200,000 iPad users who downloaded the browser within the first three days of launching. For those not in the know, Skyfire for iOS takes the world of Adobe Flash and converts the video into tasty h.264 bits. This Apple friendly video is then fired across the web to your iOS device for seamless playback, almost as if your iOS device had native Flash support. Since it doesn't look like Apple will opt for traditional Flash support anytime soon, Skyfire is your best bet. We've covered Skyfire for iPad and iPhone in great detail in the past, so if you're on the fence we recommend checking out some of our earlier coverage. Out Now | App Store | $2.99 Related posts:

First up, Mobile World Congress is still limbering on in Barcelona, so we’ve been checking out the show floor for more juicy smartphone gossip. We hit INQ’s stand to check out the Android powered INQ Cloud Touch, as well as the QWERTY follow up, the Cloud Q, in the flesh for the first time. Rumour broke out on the interwebs meanwhile of a Sony Andriod Honeycomb tablet – and if true, it’s certainly going to be curiously shaped. Noticing a trend here? Yup, despite Microsoft’s grand proclamations, the star of the MWC show has been Android: so much so that there were even Android shaped slides for mobile industry visitors to have a go on! Check out the video here. Still want more news? Head on through to the homepage and help yourself to it all as it breaks! Related posts:

| Best iPhone apps: app of the day – Nomis Posted: 16 Feb 2011 09:05 AM PST
Today’s entry into best iPhone apps is Nomis, a clever little utility that scans your virtual record collection to show you what new releases your favourite artists have coming up. We especially like that it racks them on shelves that look awfully similar to the ones we’re used to in iBooks. Sure £1.19 is a bit pricey for an app like this but Nomis is still one of the best iPhone apps in its odd little category. Out now | £1.19 | iTunes Related posts:
