Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:14 AM PST The Siemens group commissioned BWM’s subsidiary Designworks USA to develop a sprawling metro railway for Los Angeles, Munich and Singapore. Aptly called the Metro Inspiro, the design is meant to make all facets of public transport in a train easier. Innovative door-lit graphics, iconography to indicate status and time, and the tree referenced hand rails for passengers of all heights intimate a more user-friendly train. The interior has a warm, almost organic feel. Materials like cork, rich woods and adaptive lighting make the Inspiro one of the most comfortable and eco-friendly trains to ride. Good news is Siemens just received an order for one in Poland. Not sure when construction starts but I’m already anxious to ride it. Designer: BMW DesignworksUSA ---------- |

This uber chic Coat Hanger goes by the name of Pluche. What makes it a thoughtful design is the flat tray for keys and a loop for hanging stuff like umbrellas etc. Very well done indeed! Look Carefully; It’s a Transparent TV! Posted: 03 Feb 2011 05:44 AM PST Ask yourself, “what's the next step in television innovation?” The answer is transparency – an invisible flatscreen that blends into the home environment when not in use, much like the Loewe Invisio. This magnificent TV is not a big black blot in standby mode, like how all television sets are. It’s a clear, frameless glass surface that keeps the room in its "visually unaltered" state. Michael explains, "As the first of its kind, the Loewe Invisio introduces technical innovation, combining conventional LCD and the latest TOLED display technology. This allows to create non-transparent / solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and full contrast range from solid black to pristine white." Just what our homes need! Loewe Invisio is a 2011 iF Concept Design shortlisted design. Winners for the competition will be announced soon. Designer: Michael Friebe ---------- |
Posted: 03 Feb 2011 12:10 AM PST As complicated as it can be, getting up in the morning has several really simple solutions, supposing you’re one not apt to be waking. One of them is TUI-AC, the Tangible User Interface Alarm Clock, a lovely little bomb that you set with a pin, turn, crank, and arm by releasing, and go ahead to sleep. Once the bomb’s set time is reached, BOOM! And alarm goes off that you’ll never miss. Why? Because of how complicated it is to get up, find the bomb, find the pin, and place the pin back in the bomb to stop the noise. Designer: Huang Wei ---------- |
Take Whats There and Make Energy Posted: 03 Feb 2011 12:03 AM PST One of the greatest things you can do as an industrial designer with earth-saving aspirations is to find a source of free or nearly-free energy. That’s what Luís Castanheira appears very much to have done here. This is Voltair, a wind power generator comprised of an array of fans set on the median of a highway, each of them turned by the air pushed past by the cars speeding by. The cars that’d be going by one way or another. Brilliant! The main goal of this project, having had the general idea in mind, was to reduce the complexity of the product as much as possible. In doing so, Castanheira was left with a base that supports a power generator, a body composed of a set of curved blades, and a safety cover fixing all components. Posted: 03 Feb 2011 12:03 AM PST The project you’re about to lay eyes on is not a nut. It’s not a shell either. Nor is it even organic. Nay! It is a nut cracker, and it has a name: Handy Nut. This lovely and elegant piece of industrial design sculpture is made our of a full porcelain cast, made to be conveniently ergonomic and smooth and gentle to the touch. Have you ever in your whole live seen such a classy cracker of nuts? This project was created during a general workshop class tutored by Lena Dubinsky in the department of ceramic design at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem.
