T-Mobile myTouch 4G Price Drop to $30 Posted: 03 Feb 2011 11:12 AM PST How would you like yourself a fine little HTC myTouch phone with 4G speeds, a fine 5 megapixel camera on the back, and a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor inside, all for $30? A big whopping twenty dollar bill rolled up in a ten dollar bill seems like chump change compared to a brand spanking new Android phone in the pocket, wouldn’t you say? You can grab this deal today on Amazon – act fast!
As with most deals of this magnitude, you’ll have to sign up for a 2-year contract, which might not be your most attractive option should you be thinking of all the fabulous superphones about to be released this spring. On the other hand, you’ll need more than a couple hundred bucks to get your grippers on those, so lets look at the details on this phone right here: The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Sound nice? Go get it! Motorola Atrix 4G OFFICIALLY Available for Pre-Order on Feb 13 Posted: 03 Feb 2011 10:31 AM PST Just a few short minutes ago, we reported that the Wall Street Journal was speaking with AT&T Mobility Chief Executive Ralph de la Vega and had confirmed the release date and preorder date for the Motorola Atrix 4G. Turns out there’s also a press release released today that further confirms the preorder date to be February 13, but notes that the Atrix 4G will be available at AT&T “and select retail channels” on March 6th OR earlier. The price of the phone (without the laptop dock) is still set at $199.99 with 2-year service agreement.
Additional peripherals noted in the press release are thus: The Motorola ATRIX 4G now officially runs Android 2.2, is “the world’s most powerful smartphone,” has a 2×1 GHz dual-core processor, the world’s first qHD display, Adobe flash player (probably 10.1), and of course, 4G speeds. Android/MeeGo Aava Mobile Medfield Phone Confirmed Posted: 03 Feb 2011 10:12 AM PST Last week a MeeGo prototype was shown off at an Intel sales conference. It was only shown for a moment by senior vice president and general manager of Intel’d Ultra Mobility Group, but there it was. What was this super secret phone? According to Aava Mobile speaking with SlashGear, this phone is ready to be shown off at Mobile World Congress in less than two weeks (we’ll be there). But what IS IT?! It’s a 8.9mm-thick touchscreen smartphone that runs both Android and MeeGo.
These phones are a second generation of Aava Mobile’s Aava Core design, and these phones will not be sold direct to customers. These phones will instead be utilized in the same way the original model was, as a developer device as well as to promote the company’s modem platform and integrated ACPU to OEM/ODMs. We got our hands on one of the original versions of this line of phones back at Mobile World Congress 2010, if you’d like to take a look – that presentation having both Android and Moblin versions ready to show. This is an exciting development for those rooting for MeeGo, especially since the Intel Atom Medfield based chips they’ve put together here are also suited for tablets. Speaking with Chris Davies of SlashGear, Aava Mobile has said that those excited about the project should not be caught up in the smartphone shell this platform is currently in – tablets ahoy! ) |
Xperia Neo Hands on with Gareth Beavis Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:46 AM PST Someone has their hands on a brand new Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo and their name is Gareth Beavis of Tech Radar. This is one of several XPERIA phones coming out in the near future from Sony Ericsson, two more being the XPERIA Arc and XPERIA Play (aka PlayStation phone.) Is a lineup of some giant magnitude like the team they’ve got coming out soon enough to keep Sony Ericsson in the green with Android fans?
If you’ll take a moment to head to the XPERIA Play and/or the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc tag, you’ll note instantly the similarities between those two and the one we’re about to look at: the XPERIA Neo. The biggest similarity between them, beyond the obvious family resemblance, is the rumor that they’ll all be released into the wild at this year’s Mobile World Congress – we’ll be there to let you know, of that you can be sure. One the front/top of the Neo you’ll see a proximity and light sensor, giant camera, and earpiece. Beavis notes that this sensor appears to be better than the average VGA hardware found on most phones, while the rest of the hardware appears and feels like it’s all in the right place for easy access with one hand – for instance the lock/power key on the right side of the phone, easy to access with one’s thumb (or index finger, whichever you are.) Below the power/lock is a volume dongle and a physical camera shutter button. On the back of the device is the monstrous 8.1 megapixel camera with LED flash. “HD” and “XPERIA” surround the camera and flash circles, making this phone back appear stylish and well planned. On top of the phone in addition to the headphone jack is both a microUSB jack and a mini-HDMI out connection for connecting your phone to a larger screen. Under the battery cover is a gigantic battery with no name (surely to be named upon release) as well as a changeable microSD card. Inside is essentially the same XPERIA experience that’s to be had with every other XPERIA phone. It’s a TimeScape overlay with slight improvements due to the inclusion of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This interface is said to feel very fluid with little to no feelings of judder or slowdown. The user interface at this point is not complete, as this phone isn’t set to release yet for some time, but Beavis does note that the keyboard does not quite seem as accurate as the Gingerbread keyboard offered on the Nexus S. Beyond that, everything appears to be working as one would expect – smooth, fine, nice. Now it comes to it – will this phone be thrown under the bus when it’s released aside the slightly wilder looking XPERIA Arc? Since both phones appear to be so strikingly similar but for the hardware shape, the XPERIA Arc being slightly more stylish and thin, we’re going to go out on a limb and say yes. Yes, this phone will be thrown under a bus. [Via TechRadar] ) |
Motorola ATRIX 4G AT&T Presale Starts February, Releases March Posted: 03 Feb 2011 09:25 AM PST It’s been revealed in the Wall Street Journal with AT&T Mobility Chief Executive Ralph de la Vega that the ATRIX 4G will be going on presale with AT&T starting on February 13th (right at the beginning of Mobile World Congress 2011, which Android Community will be attending.) Furthermore, the WSJ revealed that the release date for the ATRIX 4G is set for March 6th. The phone will be priced at $199.99 with a two-year agreement, and $499.99 if you purchase the phone with the laptop dock at the same time.
What a price jump! The laptop dock they speak of can be seen in the video below. It appears to either be a laptop that you can plug the ATRIX 4G into, or a dock that you can plug the ATRIX 4G into that then plugs into whichever laptop you’ve got. As far as the price goes, it makes us wonder about the legitimacy of the Costco Price we posted about a week ago. This phone appears to be ramping up to be a sort of introduction to everywhere computing, at the same time both affordable and advanced, making this Android phone a very accessible situation indeed. Have a look at the video and the laptop dock both above and below: NOTE: also head over to SlashGear for our hands-on video and pics. [Via WSJ] ) |
LG Optimus Black Teased on T-Mobile Posted: 03 Feb 2011 08:38 AM PST The T-Mobile UK website has today set up a teaser website for the upcoming LG Optimus Black Android phone that was previously teased at CES 2011. This phone is packed with a 4 inch NOVA display, Android 2.2 Froyo, and will be later upgradable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
This phone is also extremely thin at 9.2mm at its thickest, tapering down to 6mm at its thinnest point. The NOVA panel for the display is said to save 50 percent power verses a regular LCD, but blasts light at 700nits brightness. Furthermore, LG Optimus Black has a 1,500mAh battery, 2-megapixel camera on the front for video calls, and WiFi Direct technology, and Gesture UI which recognizes lifting, shaking and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or playing music. Check out more info on this phone by clicking the [LG Optimus Black] keyword. [Via Mobile Burn] ) |
Xperia Play Commercial Leaked by Norwegian Android Site – TERRIFYING Posted: 03 Feb 2011 07:09 AM PST Behold one extremely weird commercial for the upcoming “Playstation Phone” aka Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play. There’ve been several sightings of this device, and indeed even a couple of hands-on experiences out there, but this appears to be the first real live official ad spot. This commercial features a man running through some back alleys on a mission to deliver a scissors to an underground surgeon who then uses the scissors to cut some wrappings off of an ewok-sized Android.
What kind of surgery was the Android having done? The Android was having thumbs grafted to his robot arms. Horrifying. This commercial confirms not only the name of the device for certain, it releases a brand catchphrase for future Sony use: “The smartphone with everything you need, and the one thing you want.” Thanks for the tip, DF! LG Optimus 3D headed to Vodafone and Three UK Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:53 AM PST UK networks Three and Vodafone have both confirmed that LG’s Optimus 3D is on its way, though neither will admit to a release date. Vodafone’s announcement was straightforward, with the carrier telling Electricpig that “it will come to Vodafone. As soon as it's launched, we will bring it to the UK.” Three was slightly more surreptitious, instead using Twitter to link to the promotional “Something big is coming” video which LG released earlier in the week. The Optimus 3D is expected to launch at MWC 2011 later this month complete with a 3D-capable display and a dual-camera array. |

Motorola’s XOOM tablet, Android 3.0 Honeycomb in all it’s glory, and even some fun little Android toys (seen below!) T’was a good time had by all. [Via AndroidDevelopers YouTube] ) |
Galaxy Tab returns under 2% in US insists Samsung Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:24 AM PST Samsung has denied analyst claims of sky-high Galaxy Tab returns, suggesting that figures indicating up to 16-percent return rates are entirely false. Instead, the company says, US return rates are under 2-percent. The news follows another clarification from earlier this week, when Samsung was thrown into damage control after reports suggested an exec had described sales of the tablet as “quite small”; in fact, the spokesperson had said “quite smooth” but seemingly been misunderstood during the quarterly financial call. At under 2-percent, that puts the Galaxy Tab return rate at around the same as what’s been quoted for Apple’s iPad, though the company is yet to announce official numbers. Samsung is expected to unveil a 10-inch Galaxy Tab with a dual-core processor at MWC 2011 later this month. [via SlashGear] ) |
eyeSight brings gesture recognition tech to Android tablets Posted: 03 Feb 2011 04:43 AM PST Last time we heard from eyeSight was when the company rolled out the Natural User interface for Android devices back in June of 2010. The company is back with a new gesture user interface for Android devices that can turn hand gestures into commands on the tablet.
The technology will also run on Windows tablets, it uses the 2D camera on the Android tablets, and needs no camera upgrade of any sort to operate. Using the gesture technology the user can control all sorts of tablet functions like the music and video players, games, and lots more. The app uses real-time image processing and machine vision algorithms. The software can be installed on portable devices and allows the user to get a new navigation experience. It will work on mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, netbooks, and lots more. The tech promises low CPU and memory needs and is independent of the processor and camera hardware. ) |
PowerAMP music player for Android gets updated Posted: 03 Feb 2011 04:27 AM PST We talked a bit about the PowerAMP music player app back in November when the beta hit the Android Market. PowerAMP is doing well and the company has announced that the app will pass two million Android trial installs this week. The company also claims that since December the app has been the number one in multimedia and has a top three spot in rankings for all non-game apps.
The app has been updated to version 1.1. The paid app sells for $4.99 and has some nice updates added to the original. It supports Audio-focus Android 2.2 API allowing it to pause itself when a voice search is being performed. It has a dynamic play queue, customizable EQ presets that can be assigned on a per song basis or to a specific output. The updated version gets new skins, support for FLAC 24bit/96khz tracks, improved WMA Pro/AMR/WAV support, and can delete duplicates in the playlist. Numerous other features were added with a new hierarchical folder view, sleep timer, and lots more. The new version can be downloaded right now. ) |
TuneLink Auto for Android smartphones now shipping Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:58 AM PST You might recall back before Christmas I mentioned a new audio streaming device that was set to hit the market called TuneLink Auto. The device was originally expected to land in mid-January, but that date came and went with no availability.
New Potato Technologies, the company behind the TuneLink Auto for Android, has announced that the device is finally shipping. The system is a combination of a DC adapter that has an integrated FM transmitter and an app that runs on your Android device. In share mode, multiple users can connect to TuneLink and play content back on the car speakers. The app will also find the best station for you to broadcast on in any area when you press the Speedtune button. TuneLink also allows the user to connect directly to an aux input if the car has one. The device will cost you $99.99. ) |
Android-based Cowon D3 PMP/MID shipping today Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:32 AM PST It was only a few days ago that Cowon’s D3 PMP went up for pre-order, and now it’s already shipping. Earlier than expected, the 3.7-inch AMOLED media player is on sale in both the UK and the US, with its JetEffect 3.0 tuning courtesy of Cowon’s own CEO, Namkyu “Golden Ears” Park. Advanced MP3 Players are listing all three versions: 8GB for £219, 16GB for £239 or 32GB for £279; US shoppers can pick up the 32GB version through Amazon for $369.99 [via SlashGear] ) |
Dropcam Android app: Feed your CCTV paranoia on the move [Video] Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:04 AM PST Dropcam has added an Android app for accessing its streaming webcams to the Android Market, having previously only offered basic browser support for non-iOS devices. The app itself is a free download, though you’ll need to be a paying Dropcam subscriber in order to actually access your cameras. As well as regular streams, you can set alerts to be notified on movement or audio. [via AppScout] ) |
Samsung Galaxy SL GT-I9003 ditches Super AMOLED for Super Clear LCD Posted: 03 Feb 2011 02:52 AM PST As predicted, Samsung has quietly unveiled the Galaxy SL GT-I9003, a Super Clear LCD version of the existing Galaxy S. The new model keeps the Galaxy S’ 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Android 2.2 Froyo OS and 16GB of onboard storage, but swaps out the Super AMOLED display. Although Samsung hasn’t confirmed it, the exchange is believed to be to preserve stocks of Super AMOLED for its newer devices; the best-selling Galaxy S is due to be replaced at MWC 2011 in a week or so. Right now it’s being listed on the Samsung Middle-East site, but there’s no telling whether other regions will also get this alternative model. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!] ) |
Fring for Android updated: Nexus S and Gingerbread support; Smoother audio Posted: 03 Feb 2011 02:24 AM PST Fring has updated its Android app, with the free video and audio call software now supporting Android 2.3 Gingerbread and getting “enhanced” Nexus S support. There are also improved notifications and a boosted activity log which pulls in all calls, friend alerts, chats, video calls, history and system messages into a single place. Perhaps most importantly, audio performance has been boosted with better buffering. You can download the Fring v2.4.3.2 app here. |
HTC Pyramid bringing 1.2GHz dualcore and qHD display to T-Mobile? Posted: 03 Feb 2011 02:13 AM PST T-Mobile USA is reported to have picked up HTC’s first dual-core Android smartphone, codenamed the HTC Pyramid, with the device expected to go on sale in May 2011. According to Android and Me‘s sources, the Pyramid will use Qualcomm’s 1.2GHz Snapdragon MSM8260 processor and be paired with a 4.3-inch qHD display. As you’d hope, given T-Mobile’s 4G push, the Pyramid supports HSPA+ for high-speed browsing on its 960 x 540 display. That’s the same resolution as the iPhone 4 and the Motorola ATRIX 4G, and a nice step up from regular WVGA. ) |
Honeycomb Includes Encrypt Tablet Feature Posted: 02 Feb 2011 09:06 PM PST Those wacky sleuths over at Engadget took that extra tiny moment to click and extra button today and uncovered a buried-deep but extremely important feature by the name of Encrypt Tablet. This feature can be found under everyone’s favorite settings category Location and Security. With this feature you’ll be able to secure your personal data further than ever before with a password or PIN number. This feature is included on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and not just on the Motorola XOOM tablet it was discovered on.
The Google rep speaking with Engadget mentioned that furthermore, there’s an API that allows you to enforce policy restrictions upon underlings. The strange thing about this whole situation though is the “needs a full hour’s charge” requirement. Does the encryption just… fail after that? How silly. That can’t be it. This is the sort of thing which, now that we see it, seems like it should have been in place since the inception of Android (and every other mobile OS for that matter.) EDIT: I’m an idiot. Takes one hour TO ENCRYPT not one hour of battery or it’s un-encrypted. Excuse my foolishness. [Via Engadget] ) |
