US Update: N9 specs, Optimus Black, Galaxy SL Posted: 03 Feb 2011 07:00 PM PST
Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? T-mobile UK has just unveiled the latest BlackBerry Curve 3G, now in "Smoky Violet". The handset is available now in T-mobile stores, online and via telesales. Leaked specs on an upcoming MeeGo handset, possibly the Nokia N9, have surfaced. An Intel 1.6 GHz cpu, 1GB of RAM, 200 MHz GPU with 512MB or RAM are just the start. Is Nokia poised for a return to the high-end smartphone arena? The LG Optimus Black, the world's first Nova display handset, has just been spotted on T-mobile UK's website. Listed as coming soon, we expect to see a March release — can we pencil you in for one? A new Galaxy S smartphone, the Galaxy SL i9003, has been revealed. The smartphone features a "Super Clear LCD" and is set to debut at MWC 2011 later this month. We've got the scoop and a comparison photo with the original Galaxy S and Optimus 2X. Last up this morning is news on a new deal between Hulu and Viacom. The deal, finalized this morning, returns both the "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" to the online streaming service. Unfortunately only Hulu Plus members will have access. That wraps up the latest and greatest in the world of tech from my side of the pond. As always I'm Nick Marshall, saying over and out. I'll see you again tomorrow. Related posts:

Hulu Plus adds Daily Show and Colbert Report Posted: 03 Feb 2011 06:00 PM PST
Last year Viacom pulled the plug on the two shows after disputes over programming fees. Today, a new deal finalized which solidifies their return, although no details on the financial terms were announced. Hulu's ad-supported online video service has gained quite a following in the US. Unfortunately, video rights for playback on devices such as the PS3, GoogleTV and even smartphones forced the website to launch their paid, Hulu Plus service in November. Despite the monthly fee, the service still enforces ads and instead justifies the cost based on additional content and device playback support. With the overwhelming success of Netflix in the US, the need for additional content on Hulu Plus is essential. Hopefully today's announcement is one of many. Still no word on whether we’ll see Hulu make its UK debut in 2011… via Reuters Related posts: |
Confirmed: Samsung Galaxy SL i9003 packs ‘Super Clear LCD’ Posted: 03 Feb 2011 05:00 PM PST
Under the hood of the Galaxy SL i9003 is a 1 GHz processor, but not the Hummingbird CPU currently used on the existing Galaxy S line up. Instead, Samsung has opted to go with a TI OMAP 3630 CPU. The other major difference between the i9003 and the i9000 is the new four inch "Super Clear LCD" display, which Samsung used in favor of the four inch Super AMOLED. Breaking down the Galaxy SL i9003 reveals it is slightly heavier and slightly thicker than the i9000 and the battery has been increased to 1650 mAh. More important, the Galaxy SL ships with Android 2.2 which increases the likelihood we'll see a timely Android 2.3 update. To really understand what a "Super Clear LCD" means for smartphones, we invited you to take a glance at the photo (above). Our friends at GSMArena were able to get their hands on the Galaxy SL i9003 and compare its display with the original Galaxy S (right) and the LG Optimus 2X (left). Under the lighting conditions we'd say the original Galaxy S retains top honors, followed by the Galaxy SL and then the Optimus 2X. For now there's no word on pricing or a release date, but we expect to track down those details when we hit Barcelona for MWC 2011. Until then, we'll keep our eyes peeled for more news on the Galaxy SL i9003. Coming Soon | Samsung Related posts:

LG Optimus Black spotted on T-mobile UK website Posted: 03 Feb 2011 04:00 PM PST

For now, there's no word on pricing, but this is the first time we've seen a carrier out the handset. Standard features include WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, HSPA connectivity, GPS, a five megapixel camera, HD video recording, a two megapixel front-facing camera and a 1GHz processor. We'll be following this story closely, but rest assure we'll be breaking plenty more LG Optimus Black news in the coming weeks. For those of you worried about Android 2.3 Gingerbread (myself included), LG has assured us that the Optimus Black is "upgradable to Android 2.3", so rest assure an update is coming. Nokia N9 details: MeeGo device specs leaked? Posted: 03 Feb 2011 03:00 PM PST
Based on MeeGo bug reports, patch information, and source code files, the team over at NokiaPort.de has put together the following list of Nokia N9 specs: Intel 1.6 GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 200 MHz GPU with 512MB RAM, 480 x 854 pixel display, HDMI output, Broadcom BCM4751 GPS chip, NPX Semiconductor PN544 NFC controller, Infineon XMM 6260 3G modem (21 Mbps HSPA+) and a Texas Instruments WiLink 6.0 WL1271 chip (802.11N WiFi, Bluetooth). To put it bluntly, specs are exceptional. Back in 2010 when Nokia's Linux distribution ("Maemo") and Intel's Moblin, merged forces to become MeeGo, an uncertain future overshadowed the project. Setbacks aside, if this spec sheet is based on the upcoming Nokia N9 — the smartphone world is in for a real treat in 2011. It's clear we're thoroughly impressed by the specs on paper and we've been advocates of the MeeGo platform since the release of the Nokia N900. If Nokia can bundle the aforementioned hardware into the N9, the return of Nokia as a high-end smartphone powerhouse might not be so far fetched. For now, we remain optimistic, but it's time to hear what you have to say. If the Nokia N9 packed these specs, would the MeeGo platform return Nokia back to the proverbial smartphone food pyramid? via IntoMobile Related posts:

LG Optimus 3D phone headed to Three Posted: 03 Feb 2011 08:07 AM PST
![]() A tweet from Three’s official Twitter handle, @ThreeUK, published today, links to the LG Optimus 3D teaser trailer, with the words “Something big is coming”. We’d take that as a strong indication that Three plans to sell the LG Optimus 3D. As for the details on the LG Optimus 3D itself, we’ll have to wait for Mobile World Congress in just over a week for the details, but we’ll be there reporting live, so expect more details then, if no more UK networks confirm their plans to sell it too. What do you make of the LG Optimus 3D? Do you want a 3D phone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Related posts:

You'll have to pay for the phone upfront, of course. When bought with a £20 top-up, the BlackBerry Torch is £500, the BlackBerry Bold 9780 £350, the BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry 9300 are £300 and the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is £150 (or £160 with a £10 top-up). The data plan is straightforward: it's £2 for weekly access, £5 for a month. For that you get BBM, email and web browsing, plus access to BlackBerry App World. Two tariffs are also available: Simply8, where calls are 8p per minute and texts 8p; and Addict Tariff, where you pay 26p per minute or text but get unlimited texts if you top up by £15 in a month.
