Rub a Stick to Make Light

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Our ancestors rubbed two twigs to make light (fire) but to kindle the Lightstarter you just need to work on one. The embedded accelerometer determines if your rubbing is good enough for 30 seconds or 10 minutes of torchlight. Essentially one second of kindling time is equal to 10 seconds of light! I'd definitely take it on my next camping trip.

  • Kindling time for Lightstarter is 1:10
  • 3 second kindle = 30 seconds of light
  • 35 second kindle = 1 minute, 10 seconds of light
  • 1 minute kindle =10 minutes of light
  • Lightstarter is battery powered and uses an accelerometer to determine the start and length of kindling

Hair Trapping

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:36 AM PDT

My mother has this really annoying habit of washing her hair in the kitchen sink. She says it's a quick-fix when you’re running out of time… I call it being lazy. The downside is that hair usually clogs up the sink and cleaning the sink stopper is plain yuk! I guess it's for this reason that I love the Crown Pop-up sink stopper idea; the exposed top end stays clean while the root-ish tail end catches the hair and goop. I so need this!

Future Cars Inspired by Snails and Brains

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:34 AM PDT

Although designer Omer Sagiv designed the CYBERSNAIL for his first comic book “Cyberman,” the design is too interesting to pass up. The story arch revolves around the discovery of bio-cyberspace existing in human brains (kinda like subspace in outer space). Groups of people and even the brain dead serve as bio-cyber platforms, essentially turning them into biological hardware. The CYBERSNAIL is an allegory for firing neurons and hyper synaptic activity. I want to read this comic!

Nikon D800 Turns Me Right Round

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:24 AM PDT

The Nikon D800 concept is a new approach to ergonomics reflex camera for recording video. It has a rotating handle so you can hold it like a traditional camcorder. The rubber grip is removable and the texture is very soft – adapting its shape to that of the fingers. The display is wireless, making better use of LiveView at angles difficult to reach.

Knock On Wood

Posted: 11 May 2011 12:03 AM PDT

Gordon Cormack Kedslie’s design, Touch Wood, is a fresh take on both the doorbell and the classic knock. Instead of ringing the bell, or banging on the door, visitors knock on any (or all) of the touch sensitive pads to trigger a limitless amount of customizable bells and other sounds. Personally, I dig it because I’d have my own personalized knock, and, of course, because it would make ding-dong-ditching that much more fun.
