Diablo III is real, public beta goes live Q3 2011

Posted: 10 May 2011 06:12 PM PDT

Diablo III is real, public beta goes live Q3 2011Blizzard Entertainment has done us a solid this afternoon, confirming a public Diablo III beta launch for the third quarter of 2011. A release date is still out of the question, but CEO Mike Morhaime has confirmed “company-wide testing” began last week in a recent investor call.

The money-making machine known as Blizzard Entertainment is preparing to launch the third installment in the Diablo franchise, Diablo III. Details surrounding the game are scarce and up until today, a public beta launch was seriously in doubt. The speculation proved accurate with today’s announcement, but when will we actually see Diablo III hit retail shelves (or downloads)?

Now the million dollar question — how do we get in on the public Diablo III beta?

LG Nexus device will be first to run Android Ice Cream?

Posted: 10 May 2011 05:51 PM PDT

LG Nexus device will be first to run Android Ice Cream? Two of the three heavy hitters have weighed in with Google experience Nexus devices. HTC had first dibs with its Nexus One. Samsung followed with the Nexus S. With the next major Android revision (Ice Cream) on tap for late 2011, will LG complete the Nexus trifecta?

Google has consistently released a flagship handset with each major Android revision starting with Android 2.1 and the Nexus One in January 2010. Then in November at the Web 2.0 Summit, Samsung and Google announced the Nexus S, powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This year Google will release Android Ice Cream. Word on the street is LG will be partnering up with the Mountain View team.

Although neither Google nor LG has confirmed a partnership for the next Nexus device, Andy Rubin had this to say,

“The Nexus has been the thing that we used to set the bar, and there's always going to be new ones coming out in the market…we'll make an announcement at some point in the future.”

What would the purported LG Nexus smartphone bring to the table? FoneArena believes we may see a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a chip five times faster than Tegra 2. Let the rumors begin and expect a formal announcement later this year.

T-mobile UK overcharged 700k customers, have you checked your bill?

Posted: 10 May 2011 05:15 PM PDT

T-mobile UK overcharged 700k customers, have you checked=Nearly four percent of T-mobile UK‘s customers have been overcharged according to the carrier. T-mobile believes a glitch in its billing system resulted in an estimated 700,000 incorrect bills. If you’ve noticed an error on your own bill, keep a close watch because an automatic refund should be headed your way.

So how exactly did this happen? Apparently the billing system was applying call forwarding charges when customers checked their voicemail. Depending on how often the voicemail was checked, the resulting bill could be significantly higher.

“This problem has now been fixed. We’ll be fully refunding every customer affected by this, a process which has already begun. We’re really sorry and wholeheartedly apologise to any customers who have been affected by this issue,” T-mobile UK.

If you’re a T-mobile UK customer and you’ve noticed a bit of foul play on your last bill let us know. Also, be sure to let us know when you see the automatic refund, thanks.

Upcoming iPod Nano adds a camera? We’ll take bluetooth instead

Posted: 10 May 2011 04:57 PM PDT

Upcoming iPod Nano adds a camera? We'll take bluetooth insteadThe Apple rumor mill is heating up as we approach the company’s yearly iPod event. Today, leaked images of an iPod Nano with camera surfaced on apple.pro. The site claims the rear-facing camera packs a 1.3-megapixel sensor and supports both video and imaging functions.

Apple taketh and Apple giveth. After removing the video camera and shrinking the display to fit last year’s bite-sized form factor, Apple will allegedly come full circle in the iPod Nano evolution. The 2011 iPod Nano will keep its current 1.5-inch multitouch display, but drop the back clip so that a rear-facing camera can be included.

For those of you who use the iPod Nano as a watch or just enjoy the watch strap when using headphones at the gym, a more useful feature would be Bluetooth. Please, Apple give us Bluetooth on the 2011 iPod Nano, we deserve it.

Who’s with me?

Android Honeycomb 3.1 announced, update hitting some Motorola Xooms today

Posted: 10 May 2011 04:01 PM PDT

Android Honeycomb 3.1 announced, update headed some Motorola Xooms todayProud owners of the Verizon Wireless branded Motorola Xoom will be treated to a fresh new build of Android Honeycomb, version 3.1. The news hit the Android community this morning at Google I/O in San Francisco, CA. We’ve reached out to Motorola’s UK team in hopes of tracking down our own release date, but it appears a time frame for the UK has not been established. In the meantime, let’s take a look at Android Honeycomb 3.1, shall we?

The first and arguably most needed improvements highlighting Android 3.1 begin with user interface (UI). New transitions, an optimized launcher animation, and changes to the color, positioning and text make the OS easier to use and navigate. Current Honeycomb users will notice (and appreciate) touching the Home Screen in the system bar now takes you to the home screen most recently used.

Android Honeycomb 3.1 announced, update headed some Motorola Xooms today

In terms of hardware support, Android Honeycomb 3.1 is focused on supporting USB devices. This means attaching keyboards, mice, game controllers and digital cameras is as easy as pie. Additionally, applications can step in and add USB support for almost any type of device — quite simply, the possibilities are endless.

The last major overhaul included in the new build is an updated web browser. Judging by our own experiences with the Motorola Xoom, the browser was certainly an area which needed a bit of polish and finesse. The Quick Controls UI (seen above) has been extended and redesigned to show thumbnails of open tabs. There’s also an overflow menu for instant access to settings and other controls. Hardware accelerated rendering for plugins is now standard, page zoom performance is improved and support for CSS 3D, animations and CSS fixed positioning is in tow.

Although it didn’t make our highlight real, the updated includes the Google Movies app we highlighted earlier today. For any Verizon Wireless Motorola Xoom owners in attendance, please let us know if/when you receive your update, we’d love to hear from you.

Android At Home takes on AirPlay, controls your lightbulbs

Posted: 10 May 2011 10:00 AM PDT

BREAKING: Sure, Apple’s AirPlay is an easy way to stream music from your iPhone to your speaker system. But can it let you turn your lights on and off, adjust your heating and scan CDs with NFC? No? Google’s new Android ecosystem extension, Android At Home, can. Ladies and gentlemen, you are going to like this.

Demoed at Google’s I/O conference in California today, Android At Home is a new concept, letting you control devices in your home from your smartphone, akin to various apps and gadgets we’ve seen over the last few years . The first light bulbs which will support it will be made available from Lighting Science later this year.

But it goes one further: in a tech demo the company calls Project Tungsten, Google showed how you can stream to supported stereos from within the Google Music app, akin to how AirPlay works on iOS devices. The company also showed how the speakers could scan a chipped CD and instantly add that disc’s songs to your Google Muisc account and start playing in seconds.

There’s no word on when this technology will roll out, but we’re very, very excited by the possibilities, so we’ll be following this one closely for you.

Meet the Android exercise bike

Posted: 10 May 2011 09:47 AM PDT

While Android Ice Cream Sandwich might be the next big update for your smartphone, there’s another little API that’s just been introduced to Android 2.3.4 (currently available on the Google Nexus S): “Open Accessory”. It lets you plug any supported device into an Android phone: on stage, Google demoed how an exercise bike could plug into a phone, letting you see your fitness stats on its screen, and even play an adorable racing game with the famous Google mascot.

Of course, this is just one idea: Google’s not approving what’s made so you can expect everything from portable hard drives and second screens to the inevitable sex toys.

Goole Movies: Instant streaming to your Android phone!

Posted: 10 May 2011 09:31 AM PDT

A Google Movies Android app for tablets and phones is coming! The service, which will let you rent and buy movies from within a section of the Android Market, which can be watched on the web, on Honeycomb Android tablets and Android phones.

Univeiled at the Google I/O developer conference in the US today, the service is supposed to launch on the web and Android tablet devices today, with an Android 2.2 and up app hitting in a few weeks. However, we’re not seeing anything just yet, and we suspect that cursed rights issues might make this US only – stay tuned as we dig for details.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich official: Your one stop mobile device shop

Posted: 10 May 2011 09:19 AM PDT

BREAKING: Google’s just announced the next big Android update for mobiles, Ice Cream Sandwich. As interesting as the tasty looking logo is, what’s got us most excited is that Google says it’s meant for everything: phones, tablet, laptops and more.

Included in the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update will be a new “holographic” homescreen akin to that seen on Andorid Honeycomb for tablets, as well as improved widgets.

Google is stressing that the OS is open source, after causing a controversy by witholding the code for Android 3.0 tablet software to all but its select partners.
