Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:53 AM PDT If you’ve seen the 1953 French film “Le Ballon Rouge” then you know where the Balloon Bench was inspired from. Although it appears as if the bench is floating, the illusion is created by the balloons actually being anchored to the ceiling. The balloons even act as lamps. Want one? Sunflower Monitor Loves Sunning Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:48 AM PDT The Sunflower Monitor is one of those concepts I try to view with an objective eye. At first glance, the design seems narrowly different from a very well known form factor but behind the facade are very unique applications. The monitor has 4 sensors that track the sun to generate power. It has a mini-os called Sunflower OS to make syncing with portable devices a simple affair. Of course you can use it like a traditional monitor except this one has a joint design that enables panning in almost any direction from just the slight push of a finger. Better Than Fireflies in a Bottle Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:37 AM PDT I remember camping trips where we would carry an extra jar, just to catch fireflies and make glow-in-the-dark lamps. The Bottle Lantern looks something like that. It’s a standard wide-mouth water bottle with four bright LEDs in the lid that are powered by placing your finger in the carrying hook and turning. Thirty seconds of spinning equates to about four minutes of light. Designers: Alexandra Hart & Trey Williams ---------- |
Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:34 AM PDT A day will come when computers can be rolled up like newspapers, and concepts like Roll Me will make complete sense. Here's why, it features e-paper nanotechnology roll-able display, making it light and portable. With minimal components and built-in cooling systems, the computer is highly ergonomic and intuitive. To “round” it off, it's powered by SolarRoll – a flexible solar panel that can be stowed within the hollow shaft of the computer. Designer: Omer Sagiv ---------- |
Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:03 AM PDT I love a design that incorporates its natural internal mechanics and structural elements into the aesthetic presentation. The simple articulation of the the legs on the sides of the Animate Desk allow a sliver of the maple, leather lined drawer to be seen on either side of the American black walnut exterior framework, enhancing its character and providing the user with an interesting look into the inner workings of their desk. Get it here! Designer: Dave Young ---------- |
Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:02 AM PDT The Blossom Light by designer Ewa Sendecka features four modular LED components that can be bent and molded thanks to the flexible construction of the tubing that encases the power cable (the same used in gooseneck microphone holders). For further modification the components can be used in any order or number and plugged in for power on either the first or last module. Lay it down, stand it up, or hang it from the ceiling- a great modular lighting system that only requires a little imagination. Designer: Ewa Sendecka ---------- |
Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:01 AM PDT This sleek train concept, the latest from international design practice HASSELL, was inspired by the hard styling of the iconic 1960s Australian HK Monaro coupe. The A-HSV double-decker train also offers a modern, spacious interior fit with open commuter seating, private quarters for meetings, luxurious dining, & even a convenience store. Aside from being an aesthetic achievement, the A-HSV also presents an alternative low-carbon, safe mode of transport for travelers between the Australian capital & regional cities. The real ambition behind designing the A-HSV was its response to Australia’s national debates on environmental, economical & social issues. The train aims to reduce the reliance on air & private vehicles, provide shorter travel times to regional cities under pressure from population growth, & reduce transport related congestion within cities.
