| HTC Trademarks more names, HTC Rhyme and Enamor Posted: 17 Aug 2011 10:56 AM PDT HTC has been making sure to trademark a few names lately for upcoming devices and we are now seeing even more pop up. Back in July we saw a large list of trademarked names that all seemed to be centered around “speed” but the newest few we are now seeing are a bit different.
While they’ve kept up the name “Quietly Brilliant” for a while, lately they’ve been making a loud splash in the Android market and are only going to get bigger and “louder”. They have just trademarked two more names to add to their list, The HTC Rhyme and HTC Enamor. Now first off when you see the Rhyme you’ll immediately think of the recent acquisition of Beats Audio so that makes complete sense. I can see this being a nice mid-range device focuses more on audio rather than performance and be centered around busting a rhyme and having some good audio thanks to Beats Audio by Dre. We have seen plenty of odd names in the past like Pyramid, Doubleshot, Glacier, Supersonic and more and most of those were pretty high end devices. The name Enamor sounds a bit like a high end name doesn’t it? I could see the HTC Enamor being the codename for another powerhouse flagship phone but that’s just me. While these are only codenames it’s still fun to speculate right? [via Engadget] ) |
| Acer Iconia Tab A100 vs Iconia Tab A500 [Brothers in Arms!] Posted: 17 Aug 2011 10:44 AM PDT When you take the time to consider purchasing an Android tablet today, you may well come across a set of Acer devices both called Iconia Tab, each of them then having a more specific name with either A100 or A500. We’ve got reviews of both of these devices as well as a full spec rundown so that YOU can make the right decision if the decision is indeed staying inside the Acer family for a tablet this Summer/Autumn. Will you go with the big-time 10-inch tablet, or the uniquely sized 7-inch tablet, both of them featuring Android Honeycomb?
The breakdown of these two devices is about to look rather odd to your eyes as several of the specs are exactly the same. Where these devices differ is in their RAM, the size of their display, the dimensions of the actual tablet surrounding the display, and the battery. Everything else is pretty near the same when it comes down to it. And of course, they’re both powered by the same awesome SoC, the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz, capable of awesome feats such as playing Pinball HD and Riptide GP. First, the similarities: Processor: 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core
Then in come the slight and some not-so-slight differences in specifications: A500 A100
Both tablets have very similar sets of applications on them, and both tablets have the ability to load the official Google-run Android Market as well as any 3rd party market you might think of. Your main decision here is going to be whether or not you want to pay nearly as much cash ($60 difference in price) for one tablet or the other, the display being the biggest obvious difference, then going on down the line to battery life (much better on the A500) and the amount of RAM you’ve got. Which one shall you choose? Have a look at our review of the A500, SlashGear’s review of the A500, SlashGear’s review of the A100, our benchmarks on the A100, and SlashGear’s hands-on with the A100. That should give you enough background on both for you to make a rather well informed decision this sunny tablet season! ) |
| T-Mobile LG G-Slate 3.1 Honeycomb Update Brings a Locked Bootloader Posted: 17 Aug 2011 10:34 AM PDT Sadly we have some bad news for you modders that happen to own the LG G-Slate. While recent devices like the G2x, Optimus 3D and even the G-Slate itself have shipped with unlocked bootloaders and were easy to hack, root, and mod. It appears LG has shifted positions and will now start locking bootloaders, a change we are not thrilled to see that is for sure.
While many tablets have been updated to 3.2 Honeycomb already the G-Slate is still way behind and currently rocking the original 3.0 until just recently. Early last week the G-Slate 3.1 OTA started rolling out and most likely many of you have already accepted the update but if not, you might want to wait a few days to see what the developer community comes up with. New information suggests that along with the 3.1 update the bootloader will also be locked. Making the option to root and flash custom roms, kernels or anything else your heart desires all but impossible until the device is hacked and unlocked. Could this be a new direction LG will be taking with their android offerings, or is this just for the tablet market? I sure hope we don’t get another HTC situation on our hands. Device Info

| HTC Thunderbolt Official 2.3 Gingerbread Build Leaked Posted: 17 Aug 2011 10:22 AM PDT If you are one of the many using the HTC Thunderbolt and have watched almost every other HTC device over at Verizon and elsewhere get updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, well we have some good news, sort of. While the update is still not ready for prime-time for some odd reason the official build has indeed been leaked. You can download and give it a run now, but most likely that bootloader hole has been filled.
Build number 2.07.605.0 was recently leaked for the T-bolt and while this will not be the final build come OTA time, it is an official build from HTC. Most of the other leaks were unofficial test builds that were still full of bugs, this should be much more stable and overall a better experience. If you don’t want to wait for the real thing head over to the source linked to below and get to flashing as the process is fairly easy. We saw that buggy test build leaked way back in May then nothing from that point forward. Earlier this month it was said to have been delayed again but now that we are seeing an official HTC build things may finally be shaping up for the Thunderbolt. So give this leaked build a try, go flash some CM7, or just wait for it to finally hit as an official update although we still have no word on when that might happen. As always we hold no responsibility for your actions, flash this at your own risk, and enjoy! Device Info

| ASUS Transformer 2 May Be First Kal-El Quad Core Tablet Posted: 17 Aug 2011 09:58 AM PDT We have heard a few different things about the next generation Transformer and even ASUS’s own chairman has said to expect something great and impressive. According to some latest reports we might be even more impressed than we originally thought. We are now hearing the Transformer 2 may in fact be the first NVIDIA Kal-El Quad-core tablet to hit the streets come this holiday season.
Now we are seeing multiple sources claiming that the Transformer 2 will launch this fall, lining up nicely with comments that Kal-El was coming around the same time frame. We still aren’t sure what NVIDIA will call the new superchip but most likely it will be Tegra 3, although I wouldn’t mind just calling it T4 myself since it will be rocking four cores. The NVIDIA Tegra Kal-El quad-core chip will be built on the new 40nm architecture and should be plenty fast and efficient.
With a smaller processor fabrication (40nm) we should see many improvements to not only performance, but also efficiency and heat output. Even a dual-core on the 40nm fabrication should be faster than current Tegra 2 processors but why build those when they can mash 4 cores in this beast right? For a quick look at the first Kal-El development tablet watch this hands-on video. I don’t know about you guys but I’m super excited for T4 or whatever they many end up calling the next in line for Tegra, I can’t wait to get my hands on a quad-core Ice Cream Sandwich device. It will make an amazing Christmas gift that is for sure. [via Fudzilla] ) |
| Posted: 17 Aug 2011 08:35 AM PDT The last time we talked about the Dog Wars app was back in April when Michael Vick spoke out against it after getting busted for running a dog fighting ring. That app is still around and now, there are reports that the app has been infected with a Trojan. The Trojan in this case is less “steal from you” and more “embarrass you.”
When you install the app it gathers up your contact list and sends each person on that list a text that reads, “I take pleasure in hurting small animals, just thought you should know that.” The Trojan also signs the user up for a text message alert service from PETA. There is apparently no indication that PETA has anything to do with this app. Symantec discovered the Trojan and has dubbed it Android.dogowar. The Trojan was found in an older version of Dog Wars, Beta 0.981. This version isn’t on the Android Market and is only found on unofficial warez sites. [via CNET] ) |
| LinkedIn Android app gets HTML5 update Posted: 17 Aug 2011 08:22 AM PDT
LinkedIn has announced that it has now updated the app with the ability to access the LinkedIn site with HTML5 tech. The new mobile app is supposed to make searching and updating streams ten times faster than before. The app offers top news for the day at the top of the screen. It has navigation at the top of the screen too. The app now also allows the user to access the People You May Know recommendation feature. You can also interact with the groups you belong to and join any of the other groups on the site using the app. This sounds like a nice upgrade. [via eWeek] ) |
| Fake Google+ app floating around hides Android malware Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:58 AM PDT
The malicious app inside the fake Google offering is called ANDROIDOS_NICKISPY.C .The nefarious app can actually intercept and record your phone calls. The app loads at boot up and runs services that monitor messages, phone calls, and the user’s location. This allows the malware to steal all sorts of data from users. The app sends the stolen data to a remote site where criminals can grab the data and try to use it to steal from you. The malware app was discovered by Trend Micro. If your phone is infected you can uninstall it via Settings – Applications – Manage applications, and then uninstall the Google++ app. Trend Micro gives this app a low risk rating. [via CNET] ) |
| MetroPCS partners with Rhapsody, Android users get unlimited music Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:45 AM PDT The pre-paid provider MetroPCS has several Android devices on the network today including the Samsung Admire that we talked about not too long ago. MetroPCS and Rhapsody have announced today that they have a new service that will be offered to the Android users on the network’s $60 rate plan via an app. The new service offers unlimited music from the Rhapsody database.
Rhapsody has over 12 million songs in its database and the coolest part is that the unlimited music service is included with MetroPCS $60 monthly rate plans. That means users get the unlimited minutes for talk, unlimited texting, and now unlimited music as well. The tunes will be available for as long as the user has access to the MetroPCS network. The service allows users to manage the music, create playlists, and share their lists with friends on social networks. MetroPCS is already looking good to a lot of users tired of contracts and the addition of unlimited music will make it look better. Now all MetroPCS needs is to land more high-end smartphones. ) |
| Hunch survey looks at the differences between users of Android and iOS Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:30 AM PDT A survey was posted recently that was conducted by Hunch and apparently had about 80 million responses. The survey looked at some of the differences between users that are on Android and those on iOS. The survey raised some interesting and odd facts about the users.
Android users are more likely to be male, but that was revealed before. The survey found that Android users are 71% more likely to have never traveled out of their home country. The users of iOS by contrast are 50% more likely to have visited five foreign countries or more. Android users are 17% more likely to live in the suburbs. The survey also found that 80% of Android users are likely to have only a high school diploma while iPhone users are 37% more likely to have graduate degrees. A survey of incomes found that Android users are more likely to have incomes in the $50k to $100k range with iOS users 67% more likely to have an annual income of $200,000 or more. I wonder if some of the difference between users of iOS and iPhones work out to age differences. Younger Android users would be more likely to have less income and to not have traveled. | Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini pro on sale now Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:57 AM PDT Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA mini pro has gone on sale in the UK, with carrier Vodafone offering the diminutive Android smartphone from free on new two year agreements from £20.50 ($34) per month. Packing a 3-inch touchscreen, slide-out physical keyboard and a 5-megapixel camera with video recording support, the mini pro is being positioned as Sony Ericsson’s take on the Facebook Phone concept, thanks to its Facebook Inside XPERIA support.
That boosts the integration of the social network throughout Sony Ericsson’s customized Gingerbread build, with Facebook events automatically showing up in the calendar, the ability to “Like” music you’re playing or other things directly from the relevant app, and automatic gallery sync complete with comments. Obviously there’s the usual Android Market support as well, all in a compact 92 x 53 x 18 mm chassis. Meanwhile, the XPERIA mini pro is already available unlocked and SIM-free from retailers like Clove, priced at around £246 ($405) including tax. More details on the smartphone in our hands-on report. |
| Motorola DROID HD caught in wild: Rivals Galaxy S II for thinness? Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:34 AM PDT Images purportedly showing the Motorola DROID HD – and its DROID Bionic sibling – have emerged, with the 4.5-inch smartphone looking to rival the Samsung Galaxy S II when it comes to thinness. The shots sent to Engadget show what’s estimated to be a sub-9mm thick phone presumed to have a qHD touchscreen.
There’s also believed to be an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with 1080p Full HD video recording support, together with a front-facing camera for video calls. The usual array of microUSB, microHDMI and microSIM slots are present, each arrayed around the edges. Full hardware specs are unclear at this time, though given Motorola has been pushing ahead with processors from NVIDIA and Texas Instruments, we’re guessing silicon from one of the two will also show up in the DROID HD. No word on availability.

| ADW EX Updated, Android 3.2 Support and other Tablet features Posted: 16 Aug 2011 03:09 PM PDT The popular ADW EX Launcher by the one and only AnderWebs has just received its latest update. ADW EX is probably one of the most popular home replacement apps for Android and I’m sure plenty of people are happy to hear this news. He has focused a large part of the update for tablets but there are a few neat new surprises for our phones too.
The latest version had some issues and compatibility problems with the latest version of 3.2 Honeycomb and there were a few small issues when using ADW on the larger displays of tablets. If you have been using ADW EX on your tablet this update will make you especially happy. What's New: -Fix incompatibility with Android 3.2 Note: AnderWebs just posted to Twitter that the "Hide Labels" feature has been broken with thislatest update, and he will issue a fix shortly tomorrow. I know many people will find a few of these changes to be quite nice. I’ve been using ADW EX for a long time and threw it over HTC Sense UI within the first 5 minutes of powering on my Sensation. The new dockbar design is very nice and gives it a clean and simple look. I prefer it to the old whiteout look personally. While I’ve never been the biggest fan of Launcher Pro other then a few of the widgets I do like hearing what everyone else uses. So are you a LP Fan, ADW, or are you using the increasing in popularity GO Launcher? Feel free to comment below. [via Android Market] ) |
| Google Maps updated with bubble buttons, Transit Notifications and more Posted: 16 Aug 2011 02:48 PM PDT Google has just updated the Google Maps Application for Android to version 5.9.0 and with it comes many improvements to transit navigation, new labs features and more. One that may be really helpful to many in the big cities is transit navigation notifications but that is still in beta with this latest update.
Google has been updating many of their apps as of late and Google Maps just keeps getting better and better. Here is the small but nice list of new features you can expect with the new Google Maps. -Voice and ring tone notifications for Transit Navigation (Beta) I know the transit navigation BETA is a great feature and relied on it heavily in my recent trips to NYC, being able to have notifications alert me so I never miss another subway is a huge additional and I can’t wait to try it out. In case you haven’t tried any of the “Labs” in the settings menu I suggest you give it a look. The “Bubble Buttons” are convenient popups that will show when you select a store or a location on a map. The bubble gives you instant access to navigation or even to call the store and more. I’ve been using that for months but now its officially included. There are a few new features to play with in the Labs too so be sure to check those out, report anything fun in the comments below, and be sure to head over to the market and get this latest update if it didn’t already update automatically. | HTC’s Chinese Phone with NFC Arrives at FCC, Coming to U.S. After All? Posted: 16 Aug 2011 01:48 PM PDT Last week we heard that HTC would be launching an new phone exclusively in China which would allow for mobile payments via NFC. That same device, the PH85110, has been brought to the FCC recently. On top of its already impressive array of radios were several GSM frequencies that may indicate its the PH85110 is going to be heading state-side after all.
We haven’t seen much news in the realm of mobile NFC payments since Google announced their Google Wallet program in May. HTC is taking initiative though, bringing a payment-enabled device to China, where NFC payments are already as pervasive as credit cards are in the States. Initial rumors had been that the phone would be exclusive to China though. The phone recently showed up at the FCC with a generous helping of radios, including NFC, Bluetooth, and WiFi n. As far as telephony though, it was not only sporting America’s 850 and 1900 GSM bands (Europe, Asia, and Aftica use 900/1800), but WCDMA bands II, IV, and V (II is used by T-Mobile, and the others by AT&T). While this doesn’t necessarily confirm anything, its a good sign for those who were disappointed by initial reports the phone wouldn’t come to America. The real question now, is if the phone is released in the U.S., what plans does HTC have for its NFC capabilities? Maybe the next Google Wallet phone enabled phone? [via wireless goodness] ) |
| Samsung Welcomes the Google Motorola Deal, See it as Protection Posted: 16 Aug 2011 01:32 PM PDT When Google dropped the news yesterday that they had acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion we quickly saw an uproar of comments from everyone. It seems even Google gave notice to their top few OEM partners as they all had statements ready and Google nicely posted those up on their blog. It seems pretty widespread that everyone is looking at this as protection in some form or another.
We covered this a little bit yesterday and you can read about that here. With statements from HTC, LG, SE, Samsung and even Nokia its safe to say everyone has welcomed the deal and are looking forward to what it may bring in the future. Google does mention that Motorola will be a separate entity and will not get special treatment on future Nexus devices and things of that sort, but we are hoping to at least see a few benefits from the deal and most likely we will. Samsung was one of the few to respond with nice comments regarding the acquisition but today we’ve got another reply from team Samsung that further explains how they feel about the Googorola deal.
The above comment from Samsung PR closely echo’s what we also saw from HTC who is another OEM that has been hassled as of late with lawsuits over their devices and Android. HTC
While we still don’t know exactly what to expect, or what the outcome will be from the entire Google Motorola deal it looks like a few manufacturers are hoping for a bit of protection from the likes of Microsoft and Apple who both have been a little lawsuit happy as of late. We don’t know if this was timed or not but today we learned HTC filed three lawsuits of their own against Apple and plan to fight back with some hardball. Maybe the Google Motorola deal gave them a little more faith in Google and the protection they may be able to offer. It appears this initial deal is Google’s way of trying to clear up and fix the entire shaky lawsuit and patent situation we have going on, its gone on far too long already and hopefully everyone can get back to innovating. With the recent statements from everyone including the second reply from Samsung for now its safe to assume everyone is on board and happy to see what the future will bring. The comments do have a similar tone so they could have been asked for a similar response from Google to show one unified and strong front, but that is doubtful. Do you think the acquisition of Motorola will help provide protection to OEM’s and the entire Android ecosystem? They didn’t buy Motorola, they made an investment to help protect Android as a whole. Feel free to comment below or join this discussion over on Google+ ) |
| Best Buy Selling Motorola Atrix, Nexus S 4G and Samsung Fascinate for Free Tomorrow Posted: 16 Aug 2011 01:07 PM PDT Best Buy is bringing back free phone day! This time its going to be a Wednesday though, tomorrow, August 17th to be exact. Best Buy will be offering the Motorola Atrix 4G, Samsung Nexus S 4G, and Samsung Fascinate (Verizon’s variant of the original Galaxy S) for free tomorrow with a new contract or upgrade.
Everybody loves free stuff, and here at Android Community there’s nothing we love more than free Android devices! If you’re looking to upgrade, or get a new contract and love to save, Best Buy’s got a deal for you. For tomorrow only they will hand over the Motorola Atrix, Samsung Nexus S 4G or Samsung Fascinate for nothing but a new, or renewed contract with that phones carrier. Of all these devices the most exciting is probably the Motorola Atrix 4G. With the dual-core Tegra 2 processor and HSPA+ its a great phone to get for free (especially now that CyanogenMod is in development for it). With WiMax speeds, and the distinction of being Google’s current developer phone, the Nexus S 4G is nothing to sneeze at either. The less exciting Samsung Fascinate is quite a bit older and has no 4G of any kind, if you’re looking to upgrade or sign up with Verizon. If you aren’t sold on the phone, but like that $0.00 price tag though, you may get lucky next week, when Best Buy is rumored to be having another free phone day on the 22nd. One again, the sale tomorrow (as well as the rumored 22nd sale) are one day only. ) |
| HTC Sensation 4G on CyanogenMod 7 Preview [Video] Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:41 PM PDT With all the news lately about the HTC Sensation and EVO 3D getting rooted and achieving S-OFF I’m sure a few of you are eager to see some top quality ROM’s for these devices. While there are many over on XDA I just happened to see a video preview of the Sensation 4G (T-Mobile) running CyanogenMod 7 thanks to developer kmobs.
I figured I’d share it with everyone to keep the excitement up as I’m sure plenty of users are patiently waiting to have CM7 on the awesome HTC Sensation. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a video preview but with all the developers hard at work on the EVO 3D and Sensation things are moving along nicely and hopefully we will get nightly builds in the next week or so. From following kmobs over on Google+ as +Keyan Mobli I’ve seen a few different comments regarding the state of the Sensation 4G progress and while they’ve just got sound fully working things are still a work in progress. The video shows just about everything seems to be working great, that and from what we see its blazing fast too. I don’t know about you guys but I’ll be flashing CM7 on my Sensation as soon as I get the chance. We will be following the progress and will update as the nightly builds get closer. ) |
| HTC Ruby will be named the HTC Amaze 4G on T-Mobile Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:09 PM PDT New sources are claiming the HTC Ruby will be announced as the HTC Amaze 4G when it hits T-Mobile come October. The HTC Ruby was originally leaked a few times and even the first leak revealed it was headed for T-Mobile. Sources from PocketNow are claiming it will get the Amaze 4G name which is among the long list of names HTC has recently filed trademarks for.
The Amaze 4G will be one of two new flagship phones headed to T-Mobile and it has some impressive specs to back it up. Seen here we now know it will be powered by an impressive 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, a 4.3″ display and be a pretty powerful phone. With 1GB of RAM and an 8MP camera on the rear this should impress everyone over at T-Mobile looking for their next purchase. Sadly we heard late last night that the HTC Ruby (aka Amaze 4G) as well as the Samsung Hercules wont be released until very late October. The leak suggests an October 26th launch date which seems so far away at this point. We were hoping for something a little sooner but then good things come to those who wait. [via PocketNow] ) |
