| Motorola DROID Bionic Caught on video, shows us the boot animation and more Posted: 23 Aug 2011 12:01 PM PDT Look what we have here, the Motorola Droid Bionic appearing while the camera is rolling. Instead of a Mr. Blurrycam picture we actually get a video today. This may not be much but it does show us the boot animation, the new Moto Blur or whatever you want to call the user interface, as well as another shot of Speedtest giving the Bionic and its 4G LTE a run for its money.
We have been waiting a long long time for the DROID Bionic and the launch date is getting closer each day. We are still hopeful for that September launch we have heard more than a few times. Without much talking here is the video below for your viewing pleasure. And there it is, the Droid Bionic. while the video doesn’t reveal much we can see that it only has one bar of signal while running the speedtest app so don’t take those as completely accurate. I know from my own testing that full bars really helps the testing results. The tipster mentions the new UI changes are nice, snappy, and are much smoother than previous versions. For all the latest details and leaks regarding this device head over to the Droid Bionic Portal. [via Phandroid] ) |
| Verzo Kinzo to make Android smartphone debut next month Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:44 AM PDT Verzo is the name, and I’ve never heard of it but so far I’m really liking what I’ve seen thus far. Verzo is teasing their first Android smartphone and they will be calling it the Verzo Kinzo. The name sounds more like something from a 80′s movie or some whacky codename by HTC, but it will be the name when they expect to debut the phone in late September.
We don’t really know anything about this device, and neither does the source of these images but from what we are seeing it looks nicely built and like it could be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread but it’s hard to tell at this point. While the official press release is a bit different than most we’ve seen in the past I did like this part:
They might not be the slimmest, fastest or the best. For now. Obviously every company needs to build up the potential for current and future products but the way they are simply stating the plans is a nice change from what we are used to. The design is simple, clean, and elegant and from the initial press photos I can already tell you I like what I’m seeing.
I say this often, but I’m not a fan of the custom UI changes most companies use. The image above shows a bit of changes to the overall look and feel of Android so that is a bummer. Hopefully Verzo has a nice and clean design we will all love, but we will have to wait and see. We should be seeing more in the coming weeks as Verzo is planning on a late September launch if things go as planned. Head over to the source for even more pictures of this interesting new Android offering. Its design looks like a mix of the Bionic, Galaxy S II and the iDevice 4 all rolled into one — just a thought. | Swype Beta 3.25 Now Available with Copy/Paste Features and more [Video] Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:22 AM PDT Today the latest version of the popular Swype keyboard for Android has been released to beta testers. While many have probably seen or heard about it already I’ll be posting the videos below for you all to see the new features in action. The update is available right now over at the Swype’s beta webpage and so far I’m actually really liking the copy and paste features as well as gestures.
Many phones already have some version of copy and paste features built in, especially HTC Sense UI phones but the new system in which Swype has done it makes things even easier. No longer to you have to remove your finger from the keyboard and tap copy, then hold down and wait for the pop-up and hit paste. It’s all quick and easy using sliding gestures right on the keyboard. I actually am really enjoying this so far. Here are a few of the main new features: Quick Editing – Access cut, copy, paste, and select-all functions in a flash! Cut – Swype from the Swype key to the X key Twitter – Swype from the Swype key to T-W to create a new tweet using the highlighted text It may sound difficult but it’s actually extremely easy and here is a video to show you what I mean. I’ve tried this myself and it really is just as simple as the video makes it out to be. It really is that simple, smooth, and easy. My favorite feature is actually being able to quickly copy an entire line of text, then with a simple Swype gesture head directly into Google Maps and search for it. No more misspelling addresses or zip codes or anything. Copy a few lines, instantly go into Twitter using the Skype Key + TW gesture opens Twitter but sadly that is currently the only option. Hopefully we will be able to choose the default client Swype opens for people like me that use TweetDeck rather than the default Twitter client. Same thing works for Facebook as well. While this isn’t anything groundbreaking the amount of ease this actually brings to the table for a few of those simple daily text input and output moments really is a nice touch. Swype and their team have also updated the personal dictionary management as well as introduced something called Swype Connect. With Swype Connect the installation validation just got easier as it collects Swype-specific data and ensures the integrity and validity of the installation. This should help with installation errors for many of the users. Swype reminds us this collects keyboard data only and nothing personal. Again, head over to the Swype Beta Page for details and download instructions. ) |
| Android Web Browser Goes Open Source, Chrome Incoming? Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:19 AM PDT Google’s Andrei Popescu this week sent out a letter regarding Android’s current stock web browser, a system built on WebKit, saying that first of all they at Google apologize for the confusion the thus-far incomplete Android port that exists today in WebKit TOT has caused. Upstreaming the Android port of WebKit has for a while been a goal of the folks working on the project at Google, and what they’ve got to report today is that they will be removing the existing incomplete Android port and replacing this with an effort that includes a webkit.org build bot compiling Chromium’s DRT for Android using the Android NDK, SDK, and toolchain.
So what in the world does all that mean, you might be asking? First of all you’ve got to know that Popescu also noted the following:
What all of this means is that by bringing the Android web browser code into the Chromium project and therefor making it open source, WebKit developers no longer have to work with two totally different systems. As the Android version of stock web browsing and Chrome web browsing become more and more similar, we can (hopefully) expect a much more optimized experience overall. At the moment, as you may already be aware, Firefox generally turns up better browsing speeds than Webkit, though should “Chrome” come to Android, we may have different results popping up. If at all, we can expect a Chrome browser for Android inside 2012, more than likely. [via Webkit.org] ) |
| Sony Tablet S Revealed as Release Name for S1 Posted: 23 Aug 2011 11:01 AM PDT It appears that Sony’s first big Android tablet effort has an official name beyond the very basic “S1″ moniker we’ve been seeing thus far. This tablet will now be called the Sony Tablet S and will indeed be “PlayStation Certified” which places it as only the second Android device to be dubbed so, right after the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. This tablet will be blasting into your living room running Android 3.1 Honeycomb sooner than later and will, if Sony does indeed release it with this new “All Our Innovations Folded Into One” set of info intact, have a tablet that allows you to control your whole living room at the tap of a display.
We already know quite a bit about both this flat tablet and the clamshell Android device Sony will be releasing soon, this sheet confirming several items and revealing a few new bits. The Sony S tablet is the magazine-style tablet that’s rolling out with 1,280 x 768 pixel TruBlack LCD panel, Quickview enhancement for speed in browsing your mobile web, and Quick Touch Panel to improve touch responsiveness – we’ll be proving or disproving all of this once we get another hands-on look at the device of course. This spec sheet shows the device toting a built-in Universal IR remote that’ll control any compatible device around your living room, share, view, and transfer capabilities to add to this experience with DNLA capable PCs, televisions, and speakers. Inside the tablet you’ll find a Video Unlimited app for renting or purchasing movies, purchase music with Music Unlimited app also pre-installed, eBooks available in the same fashion through the pre-installed Reader Store, and of course several PlayStation Certified games will be pre-loaded in the final release as well. Can you just not wait? [via Engadget] ) |
| Android Market Updated, Adds +1 Button and Pin Code Security [Download] Posted: 23 Aug 2011 10:44 AM PDT It appears another update for Google’s Android Market is starting to roll out today. This isn’t much of a change like we saw a few weeks ago but we do get a few very welcomed changed and additions to the market. What we have here are a few improvements as well as the introduction of the Google +1 button for apps and games.
The biggest change to the new market that is rolling out now and available to download (below) is Google added some new security features that users have been asking and hoping to see for a long time. We now have the same pin code lock/unlock security option as we’ve always had, but now another level placed on the Android market. Now you can choose to have a PIN for opening the Android market this way no one can purchase unwanted applications on your phone. The new PIN code security is a great feature for those that have kids that love to accidentally buy apps, or that just don’t ask first. This is a great feature to have and something I’ve been waiting to see for a while now. For those that don’t want to wait for the new Market version 3.1.3 to hit your own device feel free to download it with the link below and start enjoying the new features right away. | TazPad Inches Closer to Production, NFC and Fingerprint Biometric Security in Tow Posted: 23 Aug 2011 10:32 AM PDT There’s approximately a billion trillion tablets on the market now, or so it would seem, the vast majority of them running Android or some presto-change-o OS based on the Android kernel. What manufacturers will have to do if they plan on taking a piece of this pie at this point is one of two things: get a whole new most-powerful processor to become king OR make a unique tablet to carve out a niche. What the team at French NFC and Zigbee specialist TazTag has done is to integrate AuthenTec’s TCS2 TouchChip sensor into its TazPad Android tablet alongside fingerprint biometric security — a tablet with real business intentions.
The last time we saw this tablet it was back in February where we were to believe it was going to break cover at CeBIT. What we now are to understand is that the developers at TazTag are currently preparing to put the TazPad into volume production but that they’re waiting for investment funding to move forward with the project. On the other hand, they seem pretty confident that they’re going to get it.
With talk of the inner workings of the tablet before it’s technically started mass production comes cash to continue. This tablet will feature a 7-inch color screen, multitouch, HDMI, camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and Zigbee. I don’t know about you, but even though all of this sounds good, I’d still have to be convinced with some more brand-backing or at least a full list of specs before I pick one of these up – or I recommend my multi-million-dollar business “Burns-co” to pick up a batch. | Samsung Galaxy S II “Big in America” Ad Released Posted: 23 Aug 2011 10:09 AM PDT The folks at Samsung have released a brand new advertisement for the Samsung Galaxy S II, aka one of the best selling phones in history, showing it off in several places in the world ending up letting us know that it’s coming to the USA soon! It’s big in Europe, it’s big in Asia, it’s big all over the world they say, “and soon it will be big in America.” Is this again some indication that the Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2011 trailers were indeed speaking about something having to do with the Samsung Galaxy S II or an upgrade? We shall see!
What this new advertisement shows us is that the device will be here in America soon having been massively successful around the world up unto this point. Several placements of the phone are done showing absurd combinations of real people or landmarks and a video of a replacement part on the smartphone. One thing to note that many radical religion-wild viewers might have a problem with is the RIO Jesus being covered up by a unicycler while the words “Millions of devoted followers” on top. What do you think? Massively offensive or just harmless fun? We’re majorly on the harmless fun side, and certainly can’t wait for the device to be released here in the states. Any luck and we’ll be seeing this device inside a month. Another oddity is in the tags on this video as it appears on YouTube:
Perhaps the Nokia and Wii tags are just to gain some extra attention – but maybe something more notorious is in the works? We’ll be in NYC, New York on the 29th of August to see what all the business is about – stick with us here on ANdroid Community for the sweetest coverage! ) |
| Samsung Impulse 4G Headed to AT&T as first 4G LTE Phone Posted: 23 Aug 2011 10:03 AM PDT While AT&T still has yet to actually officially launch their 4G LTE network we are now seeing a few signs of life regarding the upgraded service. This week AT&T is launching a few 4G LTE Mobile hotspot devices but so far nothing else has been announced. What we are now hearing is the Samsung Impulse 4G will be the first LTE smartphone to hit AT&T later this fall.
What you see above is the image that was recently leaked of the next-gen smartphone. The last thing we heard regarding AT&T’s 4G LTE network was that no smartphones would be launching with LTE until very late 2011, but if we are starting to see leaked devices already things may be moving along a bit better than expected. With rumors of the HTC Jetstream (aka puccini) launching in October with 4G LTE AT&T might finally be ready. The leaked Samsung Impulse 4G LTE looks extremely similar to the Samsung Droid Charge over on Verizon Wireless, which is also an LTE device. It could be possible that Samsung has slightly redesigned the smartphone and are prepping it for an AT&T launch. While we have no specs to confirm if it indeed is similar to the Charge it will feature a 4.3″ AMOLED display, 8MP camera on the rear and a 1 Ghz processor but hopefully we will see some dual-core power with the device. AT&T’s 4G LTE network is severely lacking behind Verizon’s efforts and are quickly getting left farther behind. They need to get it going, and do it quickly before it’s too late. This week alone Verizon has announced over 30 more cities getting 4G LTE in the next month. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Android has the most Malware according to McAfee Posted: 23 Aug 2011 09:17 AM PDT
McAfee also reports that overall it found 12 million unique types of malware in the first half of the year. That number is an increase of 22% from last year during the same period. The company notes that the attacks are becoming more sophisticated. That means that the attacks are staying unnoticed for longer periods, and thereby infecting more devices. Android surpassed Symbian as the most targeted mobile operating system in the world. Android is increasingly becoming a target for cybercriminals says McAfee. That is a concern for Android users and while the openness of Android is a big plus, Apple may feel pretty smug in that it checks out each app hands on to prevent malware from apps that are purchased via iTunes. | Ben Heck uses Android Open Accessory Development Kit to soothe fussy baby Posted: 23 Aug 2011 06:08 AM PDT When it comes to modding things, one of the more prolific and well known modders is Ben Heck. Heck gained fame modding game consoles into portable versions. He now has his own web show and has turned his modding skills to all sorts of uses. The latest DIY project Heck has got into was a viewer challenge to help create something that would soothe a fussy baby.
Heck took the challenge on and used the Arduino-based Google Android Open Accessory Development Kit (ADK) to create a motion simulator that would help soothe the baby just as a car ride would. Heck had a programmer pal create an app that interfaces with an unspecified Android handset and captures the motion data of a car via the accelerometer inside the smartphone. Heck then took that recorded motion data and cobbled together a system using servo motors that recreates the motion on a seat that the baby can be put in. The end result is a motion simulator that will let the baby feel like he is on a car ride without mom and dad having to get up. [via SlashGear] ) |
| Microsoft sues Motorola for patent infringement Posted: 23 Aug 2011 04:19 AM PDT We all know that one of the key reasons that Google gobbled up Motorola Mobility was for the patent treasure trove that Motorola owned. Microsoft was said to be eying the purchase of Motorola Mobility as well, strictly for the patents. In fact, some sources claimed that Motorola went with Google over Microsoft because Microsoft planned to shutter the mobile operations.
Microsoft has now decided to fight the Google and Motorola Mobile tie up by filing a patent infringement suit against Motorola. Microsoft is alleging that Motorola is infringing on some of the patents that it owns covering Android devices. Microsoft is seeking a ban on the import of Motorola handsets into the US. Microsoft claims that Motorola is infringing on seven patents. Some of the handsets that are covered in the litigation include the Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq XT, Devour, Backflip, and Charm. Microsoft feels certain the ITC will rule in its favor. The patents being infringed on according to Microsoft include those for things like displaying changes in battery charge level and the synchronization of email. [via The Inquirer] ) |
| Acer Iconia Tab A510/A500 gets Android 3.2 update Posted: 23 Aug 2011 02:40 AM PDT Back in April, we got our mitts on the Acer Iconia Tab A500 tablet for review. This tablet was cool because it was the first tablet to hit the market that ran Android 3.0 Honeycomb. If you purchased one of the tablets or the A501, you will be glad to hear that a new Android update is reportedly available for the tablet right now. The update should be available OTA and will take the tablet from 3.0 to 3.2.
There are several new features that the update brings to the tablet including the ability to scale the smaller apps made for smartphones up to the full screen size of the tablet. The app zooming is done by scaling the pixels. The update also reportedly brings with it the ability to sync media from the SD card and increases the overall performance on the tablet. The tip comes from a Polish website called Tablet-online.pl. The publication says that sources have indicated in Poland the tablet will come with Android 3.2 from the factory starting this week. The tablet has a 10.1-inch screen with a SIM card slot and a microSD card slot. It comes with 16GB of internal storage and a 2MP front camera. The rear camera is a 5MP unit with LED flash and auto-focus. The tablet uses the NVIDIA Tegra 250 dual Cortex A9 1GHz processor inside. One of the interesting features of the tablet is a USB port. | HP TouchPad Getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread Port This Week? Posted: 22 Aug 2011 10:00 PM PDT The HP TouchPad was the extremely popular webOS tablet from HP this year right? No not really, but once HP announced that they were retiring the brand and they’d no longer continue with the TouchPad series it quickly because the hottest selling tablet I’ve seen in a while. Now that the HP TouchPad is extremely affordable at only $99 for the 16GB and $149 for the 32GB (if you can find them in stock anywhere let us know) they are now attracting tons of attention. Users everywhere are snagging them up hoping to soon run Android on the dual-core tablet.
Yesterday we mentioned that a few developers have already started porting Android to the TouchPad and are calling it TouchDroid but now today we have even better news. New details are coming out from a YouTube video where one user is claiming to already have Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on the TouchPad and will unveil full details and instructions on August 24th, that is in two days on this Wednesday. Here is that video teaser below. While that is only a teaser we also have a second video to show you today. This is Android 2.2 FroYo pre-installed running on the HP TouchPad instead of webOS. We don’t have a lot of details on this next video the sources are claiming it came out of the box with a ubuntu build and was in fact booting to Android 2.2 stock. That is extremely interesting and a bit odd to say the least. Looking at that video it appears to still have the plastic on the device. It is running on Android 2.2.1 FroYo and at first boot we see the Qualcomm Innovation Center boot logo, also known as QuIC. These two videos are definitely causing a stir in the Android developer community and is peaking my interest to say the least. While I’ve still not bought one I did try to snag one at a few online retailers that accepted my hard earned dollars but they quickly returned it and said they were out of stock. Sound familiar anyone? Hopefully we see more details in the next day or two regarding either of these videos as the entire HP TouchPad and Android news continues to climb. Stay tuned for more details. [via Phandroid] ) |
| Best NFL Live Wallpaper, Support your favorite team in style Posted: 22 Aug 2011 04:13 PM PDT I haven’t posted a live wallpaper in a little while but when I saw this late last week I figured everyone would like it, Well anyone that is an NFL fan of course. With the season finally almost here, the lockout is over and pre-season games are full steam ahead why don’t you support your favorite team right on your Android phone or tablet.
As always this LWP works great on both phones and tablets although I’d be okay with it being a little larger on my 10.1″ display but for free you can’t really complain. This is a fairly basic and easy wallpaper but it has some neat features that make it better than just throwing up a team logo for your wallpaper. This comes with lights and things flying around on screen, changing to the touch of your finger and sporting your team colors with graphics and circles is what makes this unique.
Yes I am a Packers fan! (Hate if you want, your just jealous). The screenshot above shows a few of the options and selections available to try. The entire logo will go forward and backwards getting larger and smaller on screen and occasionally will flip like a coin when you tap the screen. The animations make it fun and keep things different rather than just looking at OchoCinco or whatever his name is these days. Best NFL Live Wallpaper is available right now in the Android Market. You can head directly over and download it yourself, just click or scan the QR code below. For more of our featured wallpapers in the past feel free to check out the Live Wallpaper Portal. ) |
| LG Enlighten QWERTY Slider Images Leak, Headed to Verizon Posted: 22 Aug 2011 03:42 PM PDT We have been seeing a lot of mid-range devices out of LG lately and what we have here is no different. This is the LG Enlighten QWERTY slider headed for the big red, Verizon Wireless. You might also remember the name the LG Gelato Q as that is what this was first rumored to be. More details on that are available in this LG leaked roadmap. If what we have heard is accurate this device might even be rocking NFC but the details are still not all available.
While you wont win any design contests or performance benchmarks this is a neat mid-range offering that should be hitting the shelves later in the month or early September and at a great price too. We have a 3.2″ HVGA 480×320 resolution display, an 800 Mhz single-core CPU, a 3.2 MP camera on the rear that sadly is missing a LED flash and you should also get 2GB of internal storage on board here with the included micro SD card.
We haven’t heard much regarding this phone but rumors are already stating it will hit Verizon's shelves come August 25th with an attractive $100 price tag. So while it may be as mid-range as they come (or low-range) you can’t beat the price and it would be a great phone for a first time smartphone buyer, not to mention just in time for back to school shoppers. They might even offer it free with a new 2-year contract but we’ll have to wait and see. Either way it wont cost much and should be hitting stores soon. [via PocketNow] ) |
| Posted: 22 Aug 2011 03:26 PM PDT Acer has recently released their newest device in the Android tablet game and that is the Acer Iconia A100. Acer was one of the first to market with a Honeycomb tablet in the A500 (see our review) and this time around they are first again. This is not only the first 7″ Honeycomb tablet, but the A100 is also the first device to ship with Android 3.2 Honeycomb on board stock. We’ve been enjoying this little portable tablet for the past week or so and today we have a few more details and pictures for you all to enjoy.
While the A100 isn’t the thinnest or the prettiest device, it wasn’t really designed for that most likely. It’s a great product in a small form factor while keeping performance high and price low. Thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1 Ghz processor under the hood the performance is plenty fast and stable. First off here is a quick hands-on video with the tab for a better idea of the hardware. Hardware For an idea on thickness here is the A100 and A500 sitting together We also have a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, a 2MP front for video chat, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, and even a SIM slot for GSM 3G connectivity. It also features a micro SD slot for up to 32GB of expanded storage for those in need.
On the top of the device we have the power and wake/standby button with a nice LED light to show when powered on, as well as the 3.5mm headphone jack and then some gibberish and FCC warning labels.
On the bottom of the device we have a dedicated charging port, stereo speakers, a micro HDMI port, micro USB, and a 30 pin dock connector for accessories and docks. The top has the volume rocker and portrait/landscape screen orientation lock.
Before we move on my only real complaint regarding hardware was the device could be a little thinner and then the viewing angles. The screen is nice and vibrant and the 7″ form is really nice to carry around and take in the car but the viewing angles were quite poor. Software and Performance The A100 did have a few apps pre-loaded for cloud services and things of that sort. Documents to Go, Media Server, AUPEO! a radio app that'll allow you to utilize your FM radio embedded in the device with ease and a few other fancy apps. Other than those you have the standard Google apps and programs we’ve come to expect from an Android device. Gaming on the A100 was smooth and performs well thanks to the dual-core Tegra 2 CPU. The only THD specific game was Solitare SE but the Tegra Zone app offers plenty of Tegra HD specific. Performance was decent and as always we’ve ran a few benchmarks for you to enjoy and compare to anything you may have at home. For a full rundown of all the benchmarks check out our Acer A100 Benchmark overview. CF-Bench Vellamo Web Benchmark Quadrant Linpack and last but not least, Smartbench Camera and Battery Life
The camera is 5MP and takes pretty great photos as well as 720p HD video recording. I didn’t test the front facing camera as we’ve all seen how those look for now until we get some better cameras in the front. Battery… Where do I even start? Acer was nice enough to throw in a 1530 mAh battery with the Acer Iconia A100 Tab. Yes I said a 1530 mAh battery, compare that with 4000 mAh on the 7″ Galaxy tab and around 7000 on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 you’ve got to wonder why they went with such a small battery. It wasn’t to keep the design thin and lightweight that is for sure. My Nexus One and HTC Sensation and most smartphones have around 1500-1700 mAh batteries as of late. Even though the battery was small it did seem to perform fairly decent, so I guess I can’t complain too much. The 7″ screen size as well as the highly optimized and efficient Android 3.2 might have helped out but it seems to last about 8-10 hours from what I’m seeing. The Acer spec sheet does mention 5 hours of web browsing but that is with continuous use. A nice 3200 mAh battery like the original A500 had would have really gave this amazing battery life and truly made it a portable device because as is now, it’s portability is slightly hindered by the battery life. Wrap-Up
Being smaller than any other tablet on the market while not sacrificing performance this dual-core Honeycomb tablet is just what any traveler needs. It may not be the prettiest but for what you are getting, and in the size you are getting it, I’m sure most would be happy to carry this bad boy around and play a few occasional games. The Honeycomb experience is nice on the 7″ factor but maybe I’m just now used to it on a larger screen since I’ve used so many 10″ tablets in the past. I kept finding myself reaching for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 instead of the A100. If I was headed out of town or on a camping trip this little Iconia A100 would be my first choice though that is for sure. | Posted: 22 Aug 2011 02:39 PM PDT No doubt you’ve all heard about HP canning webOS and the ensuing fire sale of their Touchpad tablet for just $99. With a price this low, demand soared as HP tried to unload their remaining stock. I was one of those lucky/persistent enough to grab one from HP, but when I already have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 from IO, what would I want one for?
The HP Touchpad wasn’t exactly a hot seller, part of why its being killed off. Some people loved webOS, but I wasn’t too impressed by it over Honeycomb. From a hardware standpoint, the Touchpad was nothing to scoff at. With a dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon (the same processor in the Sensation) and a gig of RAM, it’s not too far off spec wise from other Android tablets. From a design standpoint, the HP Touchpad is big, heavy and will always have an inferiority complex thanks to my Galaxy Tab 10.1. So I already have a tablet, and even if it doesn’t put the Touchpad to shame too badly, its a lot chunkier. Why would I blow $99 on it then? Let’s review: So what cool things are those of you who are planning on putting Android on a Touchpad going to use it for? ) |
| Motorola Droid 2 Global 2.3 Gingerbread Leaks [Download] Posted: 22 Aug 2011 01:39 PM PDT Fun stuff we have more leaked Gingerbread cookies and builds today. While the Motorola Droid 2 Global was supposed to get updated to 2.3 Gingerbread back in June it was quickly pulled and delayed after a few other Moto devices received updates that caused more harm than good. Thanks to a nice community member we have a leaked version 4.5.606 to try out for you guys.
This is most likely not the official or final version, but for those that don’t want to wait a leak is a leak right? It does appear to be somewhat close to a final build and is running stable but as always you flash this at your own risk. Just as a little reminder this file has not yet been rooted. In order to flash this file, you will have to return back to stock 2.4.330 without root or custom recovery before flashing. Download and Installation: -Download the file right here As always this could potentially cause problems or brick your device so RootzWiki or Android Community hold no responsibility for your actions. Flash this at your own risk and as usual, have a nandroid backup just in case. If you do run into issues you can also SBF back to the stock 2.4.330 after this if needed. | Virgin Mobile takes on T-Mobile with another Ad Campaign [Video] Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:53 PM PDT I don’t know about you reader but I personally like the T-Mobile Carly commercials as of late. A nice replacement for Catherine Zeta Jones if you ask me. Over at Virgin Mobile they feel differently about those commercials and that magenta colored dress and have a few of their own ad campaigns to prove it. Recently we’ve seen a few attacks come out of Virgin Mobile aimed directly at T-Mobile and their pricing.
Virgin Mobile most recently used the advertisement to promote their unlimited web, data, messaging, and email plan at $35 a month while poking fun at everyone else in the biz but mainly T-Mobile while daring them to offer the same prices. I’ll post both videos below for your viewing pleasure but first we’ll do the newest one. This last video from Virgin is basically more of the same, not as hilarious as the last one but still manages to make T-Mobile look pretty dumb in the process. Showing that their expensive unlimited data plans are no good, and over on Virgin Mobile users can live like celebrities because of all the savings. While this most recent video is still pretty awesome and funny it doesn’t quite do it for me like the last one did. Calling T-Mobile and their set “cheap” is pretty funny though, causing “Carly” to come out and say that T-Mobile isn’t cheap at all. Here is the other video as promised, I wont explain it and rather just let you watch and enjoy it for yourself. Mimicking the white background and Magenta dress commercials from T-Mobile clearly shows Virgin is going for the throat with these ad campaigns. If AT&T and T-Mo do end up merging this could give Virgin Mobile a nice and comfy seat at #4 for top carrier here in the US. What do you guys think? Clever ad campaign or just a cheap shot?
