Motorola DROID Bionic Video Teaser Trailer Released [Video]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 12:11 PM PDT

Verizon is bringing out the big guns with this ad campaign. In case anyone didn’t catch it I could swear that is the beautiful and talented Natalie Portman in this Official Motorola Droid Bionic Teaser Trailer. This has just been leaked to our inbox so we quickly uploaded it for everyone to enjoy. We saw a few fuzzy screenshots of this video earlier but this is the real deal. Get ready for the Bionic to RULE ALL MACHINES!

Without much talking I’ll just get right down to the good stuff that everyone wants to see, and that is the video. This is the official teaser trailer for the upcoming Motorola Droid Bionic. Simply put, Verizon is claiming the Bionic will “Rule All Machines”

With amazing special effects, stunning graphics, and the beautiful Natalie Portman for the model it appears Verizon is not going to spare any expenses in this upcoming ad campaign. This is probably the first of many DROID Bionic commercials we will be seeing very shortly as the release date gets closer. We recently saw the Droid Bionic on video and we are still expecting a September 8th launch for $299. Stay tuned for more details.

HTC EVO Design 4G Specs Leaked

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 11:32 AM PDT

The HTC EVO Design 4G also known as the HTC Kingdom has just been revealed with a bit more details. We’ve seen this name and device a few times before. It was leaked in April then later saw some specs and a possible name of the Hero 4G. New reports are suggesting the Kingdom will in fact be the HTC EVO Design 4G and will be the smaller sibling to the popular EVO 4G we all known and love.

A few weeks ago Engadget leaked the names of a few devices and this was included in the list. Now we have a full RUU build that has leaked giving us the full specs for the HTC Kingdom. It will in fact be called the HTC EVO Design 4G and will be the little/big brother to the EVO 4G. I say that because it’s smaller, yet has some better specs. Those details are:

-Android 2.3.4
-4″ qHD (540 x 960) display
-1.2 GHz Snapdragon S2 (MSM7x30)
-768 MB RAM
-5 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front camera
-Bluetooth 3.0 & WiFI 802.11 b/g/n
-Support for 4G HSPA+

What we have here is a very nice combination of the EVO 4G and the EVO 3D with a slightly smaller screen at just 4.0″ but it will be boosted up to a qHD 540×960 resolution. The processor looks to be an older generation processor, is single-core, but has a slight speed bump from the original EVO that was 1.0 Ghz and the Design 4G will be chugging along at 1.2 Ghz. With the 4G in the name we can expect to see it rocking the Now Network’s WiMAX speeds and those hoping for a kickstand will have to wait until more pictures appear.

This looks to be a high mid-range offering coming in slightly higher than the original EVO 4G and under the EVO 3D and should come at an affordable price, yet still have great performance and fast 4G speeds. Would you buy it?

Samsung Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro Revealed [Video]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 11:09 AM PDT

Two devices at the bottom of the price scale delivered to the public today via a specs list and press images are the Samsung Galaxy Y (Y for Young) and the Galaxy Y Pro. Something to note here is that Y for Young means those getting into the smartphone game or just those literally young of age – certainly this has nothing to do with Jay-Z who is also known as Young – keep that in mind. What you’re getting here are two lovely looking bottom-of-mid-range devices made by Samsung to bring people into the Android fold on their TouchWiz interface so they’ll love it so much they’ll never go back. Will the Y do it?

First there’s the Y (without the Pro). This device is as basic as Android gets – a 3-inch WVGA (320×240) resolution TFT LCD display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread (probably the smallest phone on the market with Gingerbread EVER), 2 megapixel camera on the back, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and a 1200 mAh battery. This device will support Samsung Hubs of all kinds, Swype keyboard out of the box, and everything else in the world that can be run with a 832MHz processor.

Then there’s the Galaxy Y Pro. Like we noted back in the post about the Galaxy M Pro, this device appears to be running a version of TouchWiz that looks very similar to what HTC has been using with Sense on the HTC ChaCha – aka the HTC Status Facebook phone.

From the same fellow that appears to have a couple other unreleased Samsung devices in his possession comes this very simple hands-on video of the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro:

This Samsung Galaxy Y Pro is a lower cost version of the Galaxy M Pro, looking to have a smaller display and more than likely a relatively small processor in comparison. Other than that we know not just a whole lot about the Y Pro at the moment – BUT again you can look at it in the video above.

Samsung Galaxy M Pro and Galaxy W Revealed [video]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 10:45 AM PDT

There’s a whole lotta Samsung going on today, and it’s certainly not all up there in the clouds. What we just revealed not 10 minutes ago was a list of new Samsung devices that included the Galaxy R, W, M, Y, and of course S. A couple of these we already knew about, the rest we’re going through here one by one. In addition to the post you’re in right now exploring the Samsung Galaxy W, aka the Samsung Galaxy Wonder, a High-Tier device, you’re going to get a brief look at a device which you’ll quickly realize is a real oddity – the Samsung Galaxy M Pro.

First let’s talk about the Samsung Galaxy W, this is a device that’s coming out in the UK at first – we even got a hands-on look at the device courtesy of UK carrier Three earlier today – and will hopefully be making it’s way to the USA soon afterward. This candybar device runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has a 1.4 GHz processor, a 3.7-inch WVGA 800×480 TFT LCD display, 14.4Mbps HSDPA capability, 5 megapixel camera on the back, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and a 1500 mAh battery inside. Social hub, Game hub, Music hub, Kies Air and more will be available inside.

In addition to the Three video from earlier today, you can see the Galaxy W in the terribly filmed video below:

Then there’s the Galaxy M Pro. This is Samsung’s first big Android QWERTY effort in a portrait mode device, this being what Samsung also calls a high-performance device at an economically sound price point. What you’ll notice right away (after seeing the lovely chicklet keyboard, physical Android menu buttons and middle joystick) is the software on the display showing the TouchWiz menu sitting up against the right side. Have you seen this configuration before? This basic bit is the first thing we also noticed when using the quite similar HTC Status – have a look at our full review of that product and get back here for the rest of these specs.

The Galaxy M Pro is tuned to business needs with a 9.97mm thin body, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2.66-inch HVGA (480×320) TFT display, and a 1GHz processor. On the back you’ll find a 5 megapixel camera, the front has a VGA camera, inside there’s Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and a 1350 mAh battery to boot. This device will also be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will be filled with some neato apps like Cisco Mobile, Webex, and Sybase Afaria.

HTC EVO 4G software update rolling out now

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 10:40 AM PDT

For the masses of HTC EVO 4G users out there you’ll be happy to know that starting yesterday, a software maintenance update has started rolling out for those lovely EVO’s of yours. You might want to head over and click the check for updates button in settings because it appears HTC has something waiting for you.

We all know the Gingerbread update caused a bit of problems that have mostly all been fixed, but this update should bring even more changes and help the overall user experience. A new maintenance update with version number 4.53.651.1 is now hitting handsets and should continue to rollout to everyone over the next week or two.

HTC EVO Software Update – 4.53.651.1

Enhancements/Fixes:

– Integrated voice recognition accuracy with voice search and voice-to-text
– Image size issue with contact transfer over bluetooth
– Images cut off in Picasa
– Group contacts not in alphabetical order
– Out of memory, Unable to send SMS

The extremely popular EVO 4G rocking WiMax that took the Now Network by storm is still alive, and kicking. I think I see more EVO 4G phones while out and around than anything else these days to be honest. For now the update is on the way and should hit devices shortly. As always if you don’t feel like waiting for it you can always manually update by going to Settings > About Phone > System Updates > HTC Software Update and then hit GO. If the update isn’t ready check back in a few hours or tomorrow as it should be landing any time now.

Motorola DROID Bionic Promo Video and T-Shirts Appearing, What Next?

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 10:22 AM PDT

Oh man, we have seen so much about the Droid Bionic in the past few weeks (or months) that it’s starting to get a bit ridiculous if you ask me. After delays and delays it appears things are finally taking a turn for the good and the highly speculated September launch date seems to be a lock for now, hopefully nothing changes from now until then.

From Best Buy ads to Verizon Wireless web pages the Droid Bionic is coming, and coming fast. Now it appears we are starting to see T-shirts sporting the Droid Bionic hit Verizon stores (shown below) and even a promo video has been spotted but not yet revealed. The shirt even has a nice little “Google” logo on the sleeve, how fun. I’m sure we will be seeing plenty of those shirts in the very near future.

Also leaked over at Phandroid is a simple screenshot of a promo video or ad campaign that we will probably be seeing shortly that flashes “September” at the end. So for anyone who has been doubting the September launch there are a few more details to get you excited.

Who’s excited? The latest bits of information we have seen still suggests the phone will indeed be launching come September 8th (a Thursday like usual for Verizon) and will be offered with a $299 price tag with a new 2-year contract. I want one!

SoundHound Infinity only $1.99 on Amazon App Store [Deal]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 10:02 AM PDT

Occasionally when I’m not snagging one the free apps of the day from the Amazon App Store I check out the deals they have running. This week they are offering the popular music tagging service SoundHound Infinity for only $1.99 instead of the usual $4.99 price tag. The blazing fast music recognition capabilities of SoundHound make it a must have application and ever since I got it free from Amazon I’ve never used Shazam.

For those that aren’t familiar with these types of services. Soundhound is the app you’ll need when you hear that cool new song on the radio, the tune to a commercial or in a movie preview, or even that catchy song at the bar and you have no clue who sings it or what the name of the song is. Soundhound will listen for you and find all the details you could ever possibly need on the song. What makes this even better is you can hum or try and sing the song yourself and it still manages to get it right.

What makes SoundHound Infinity so great is you can tag unlimited songs as often as you’d like with no limit. What makes Soundhound better than the rest is all the options once you find the track you were looking for. You can hear other top hits, listen to a preview, share your find, look up lyrics, even buy the song directly from the app with Amazon MP3. I like the YouTube feature as you can quickly check out the music video, or even read the lyrics to the song.

I’m sure you all know plenty about Shazam and Soundhound but I figured I’d give a little recap. I personally love and use SoundHound every few days and highly recommend it. Get it while its hot TODAY over on the Amazon App Store for only $1.99 while the deal lasts, otherwise you’ll be paying the full $4.99 soon. Enjoy!

2011 Samsung Galaxy Smartphone Naming Scheme Goes Live

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:48 AM PDT

It appears that the Samsung “Galaxy” line of Android smartphones has just received a whole new set of names, all the way from the top to the bottom. Right up at the top is a name we’re all very familiar with, the Galaxy S, this being the group’s Flagship device name. Next there’s R for Royal, this device being Samsung’s “Premium” device. W for Wonder comes next as a High-Tier device. After W there’s M for Magical, this device being the first in this new line to have a full QWERTY keyboard, four Android menu buttons and a joystick – very familiar in the smartphone world but generally new for Samsung. Finally there’s Y for Young, this being the Entry-Level Galaxy device.

This new naming convention comes with specs for all of the new devices, these devices being live in our device.ac archives early today. We’ve heard of a couple of these devices before, but today marks the first day that Samsung is officially letting us know that they all really do exist and are all related to one another. Each of them appears also to be rolling out with a newer version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface – as indicated here by the wallpaper, of all things, which we only started seeing once the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1 started showing off their versions of TouchWiz.

This will also be a major part of Samsung’s IFA 2011 lineup in Berlin. Certainly we’re expecting something in addition to this set of Galaxy devices that are soft of neat yet have little int he way of real NEW features to show, but you never know. For more information on what else we might see at IFA 2011, check out our [Unpacked portal] Samsung may yet have something “Big” up their sleeve.

HTC Jetstream Tablet Pics Leak, AT&T 4G LTE and Sense UI Included

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:39 AM PDT

I know everyone loves Wednesday mornings, but today we have our first actual hardware pictures of the upcoming Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet from team HTC. The long rumored HTC Puccini tablet is now showing its face for the camera and we’ve also learned it will be called the HTC Jetstream over on AT&T. Check out the pictures after the break.

The entire Puccini story has came together nicely over the past month or so. We originally saw it clear the FCC with possible AT&T 4G LTE on board, then a week or so later we saw some official press images of the tablet. Today that has all been cleared up as we now have official hardware photos showing not only Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but Sense UI added to the OS, and the all important AT&T 4G LTE network speeds will be included too. Seen nicely in the middle of the photo below.

According to Engadget the rumored specs have also been confirmed. The HTC Jetstream will pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 dual-core CPU running at 1.5 Ghz, will have 1GB of RAM and come in 16GB and 32GB flavors. The photos also confirm what the leaked images did and that is an 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and the obvious 10.1″ display. For more pictures head over to the source at the via link below but before you go check out our pictures of the user interface.

HTC is known for their custom Sense User Interface changes to the OS, even though Google was aiming for a unified look with Honeycomb it appears HTC is still going to skin everything to their own desire. You can see HTC Sense UI on Honeycomb both here and more screenshots in these leaked photos as well. I love the tablet but I’m not so sure about the UI changes. What do you guys think?

Samsung Galaxy W Hands-On with Three [Video]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:29 AM PDT

A mister Brendan Arndt from the UK’s Three network has today been allowed to show off Samsung’s newest smartphone effort, the Samsung Galaxy W. This is what Arndt calls “a sneak peek” video and introduces the mid-range device as coming out of the box with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, having a Super Clear LCD display on the front at 3.7-inches, the back holds a 5 megapixel camera with single LED flash. Also on the back is one of Samsung’s new textured battery covers (as they’ve been prone to add on many of their most recent devices, the Samsung Galaxy S II included.)

Inside you’ll find a lovely single core 1.4 GHz processor, and the front features a large single home button below the display along with a back button and Android menu button on either side. This is a lovely mid-range phone on any other carrier, but here on Three it’s what they describe as “one of the fastest devices in our portfolio.” A cool device that several years ago would have taken the competition out for lunch and made them pay for their own drinks.

Those of you rolling out on Three over there across the pond can also grab the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray and the Samsung Galaxy S II in white, both of them in September. There’s also news incoming of a cool new naming structure for Samsung devices, S for Flagship, R for Premium, W for High-Tier, M for Mid-Tier, and Y for Entry Level. More on that whole situation in just a few minutes here on Android Community.

Samsung Galaxy S II Banned in Europe by Apple Injunction

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:56 AM PDT

In a manner extremely similar to what we saw just about a week ago (then quickly limited in scope), Apple has successfully worked with Dutch courts in The Hague to, starting today, issue a preliminary injunction against three Samsung devices: the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Ace, and Galaxy S. This injunction, just like the last, due to EU law, bans the devices from sale across the entire European Union. This injunction does not include the Galaxy Tab 10.1, though with a case going on in Germany at the same time, Apple may be choosing case locations where they’ll be most effective.

The folks at FOSS Patents make things a bit more clear noting that this preliminary injunction applies at the moment only to member countries of the European Patent Organization where a specific Apple software patent is valid. The countries that are not included of course are places where the Apple did not make a patent valid by paying for and completing filing. Countries outside the reach of this preliminary injunction include Austria, Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Spain.

While it appears at the moment that Samsung’s Korean parent company is and will not be bound by the ruling, their primary European distribution hub is in the Netherlands where the ruling will be valid. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ruling surprise reveal, Samsung will have time to reorganize its efforts before the 7 weeks are up between this preliminary ruling and an its effects taking place. While the deadline for this decision was originally set, apparently, for September 15 with any injunctions to take effect after October 15, Dutch courts have decided to deliver the decision early, giving Samsung more time to “regroup” if you will.

Whether or not this case will continue to cover greater Europe down the line is not known.

AT&T Roadmap Leaks, Showly plenty of Android on the way

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 03:44 PM PDT

It appears that AT&T’s roadmap for the second half of 2011 has been leaked to the press. We recently saw a leaked roadmap of Samsung and none of the devices or numbers seem to be matching up but if this latest leak reveals anything, it’s that AT&T has plenty of Samsung phones on the way running Android.

Obviously we will ignore all that Windows Phone 7 and CrackBerry stuff and skip right to what matters, and that is the Android goods. First up we see the Pantech Nuli with an odd 800×600 resolution rather than the usual 800×480. We have seen a few Pantech leaks with 5″ displays but we can’t know for sure. Next up we see a few Samsung devices with the first one being the i777, it could be the rumored Galaxy S II headed for AT&T.

There is also mention of the Samsung Gidim SGH-i927 that could also be a variation of the Galaxy S II like the Slider we saw back in July. None of the Samsung devices are listed as Q4 but one could even be the recently spotted Samsung Impulse 4G LTE device.

Next up we’ll mention the Motorola MB865 “Fuath” as that is most likely the Atrix 4G refresh that some are calling the Dinara or even the Atrix HD. We have already seen a few pictures of that device and they can be seen here. Last but not least we also see a few mid-range type devices listed from Pantech and Huawei but I think everyone is more excited about the Samsung and Motorola devices on the chart. I did want to mention the HTC Holiday that was recently leaked running on AT&T was not on the list and we don’t really know what to make of that, but thought we’d mention it. We also don’t see the LG Thrill 4G mentioned one bit.

Either way it appears as if AT&T is gearing up for another strong few months in the world of Android, take that iPhone 5.

ASUS Transformer minor OTA Update rolling out, Netflix now working

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 03:16 PM PDT

Today ASUS has started the rollout for a small OTA update to the ASUS EeePad Transformer Tablet. From initial reports the update brings the Transformer up to build 8.6.5.9 and many are reporting that Netflix is now fully supported. We saw the Netflix logo appear on the homepage for the ASUS Transformer but we’ve still yet to see any official comments or support as of late.

While users are claiming Netflix still doesn’t show up in the market, you can download it manually and it works without root or making any changes. Download Netflix here and let us know if it works in the comment section below. The Asus Transformer recently received Android 3.2 Honeycomb so this could also bring a few changes and bug fixes for that, but we don’t have a change-log to confirm any details thus far.

This latest OTA update that is rolling out to Transformer users now also brings with it an update for the dock software. If you dock your Transformer that software will also be updated to version EP101-0213. We recently saw a few accessories and docks leak over on Amazon and this new software update might be just what was needed for those accessories.

Go ahead and check for updates and feel free to share any details, comments, or concerns in the comment field below.

HTC Status Facebook Phone getting discontinued already?

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 02:43 PM PDT

It appears AT&T is ready to de-friend the HTC Status. Are AT&T and HTC looking to discontinue the HTC Status (aka Facebook phone) already? I know deep down all you readers are screaming NOOO silently because you all just love this little phone. Some new rumors are floating around and have yet to be confirmed that are claiming that AT&T is ready to put this little guy down after only a short while on the market.

For those unfamiliar with this “awesome” phone it is AT&T’s version of the HTC ChaCha that launched in Europe with that popular Facebook button on the bottom. Although I guess we can’t really call the button popular because it looks like no one is buying into the idea. For our full review and thoughts on the AT&T flavor check out our HTC Status Review by the man Chris Burns. In his review he loved the hardware (as we do with most HTC phones) and the keyboard was awesome to say the least, but the good points ended there.

Apparently a trusted source of TechCrunch is now claiming that due to a severe lack of demand, and poor sales AT&T is ready to ditch the HTC Status after only a short 36 days on the market. Even the HP TouchPad lasted longer than that, but only by about 10 days or so. I guess this little 2.8″ display phone packed with a hardware keyboard and that lovely Facebook button will have to try elsewhere because so far no one seems to be taking the bait. If we hear anything official we will report back, but for now you can call the HTC Status de-friended.

HTC EVO 3D coming soon in White thanks to RadioShack

RadioShack today has announced they will be launching the popular glasses-free 3D phone the HTC EVO 3D come September 9th, and it will be dressed in White. We saw the original EVO 4G get a similar make over but the entire device wasn’t changed and mainly just the back cover. This time around the entire phone will get spiced up, that includes the camera bezels and everything. What do you think?

It does look nice don’t get me wrong, I just don’t see the point in going through all the trouble to make and launch a white version. To each his own I guess. This isn’t the first White HTC EVO 3D to hit the streets either. Thanks to a daring XDA member we have seen this before as a few have torn down their own EVO 3D’s and added some flare of their own. Here are the details and pictures of his White EVO 3D.

Today over on Twitter @RadioShack made the announcement for the White HTC EVO 3D and they’ve also updated to tell everyone that this will be available come September 9th. So either you can do this on your own using the pictures for the DIY job linked to above, or just wait for RadioShack to take care of it for you in a few more weeks. What does everyone think about the White EVO 3D? Would you specifically wait a few weeks to buy one or only snag it if you happened to see it in stores?

Sharp RW-T107 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Tablet with NFC

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 02:08 PM PDT

The folks over at Sharp have announced a new NFC enabled tablet headed for Japan. This will be a 7″ Android tablet but initial reports are claiming we will only have Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board here, no Honeycomb for now. A big part of the release is the full support for NFC interaction with support for Japanese FeliCa cards at the start, but we can expect additional cards in the near future.

At first thought this appears to be the first NFC enabled tablet to the market. While I like the idea of having a tablet with the option for NFC it doesn’t seem all that practical if you ask me. It will come to market in the small 7″ form factor making it more portable, but if you are carrying it most likely the chances are you also have an Android smartphone somewhere on you that has the same NFC capabilities. Packing a tablet into a store just doesn’t make much sense but who am I to say what is practical right?

Last we heard from Sharp they were prepping a 7″ Android 3.2 Galapagos tablet so why they’d choose to run with Gingerbread on this next tablet beats me. The NFC capabilities are all nicely there on Gingerbread so that could be the cause. So far the details regarding the RW-T107 and the rest of its hardware are still lacking so we will report back when we can. It is currently being prepped for a Japan only launch around September 5th, hopefully we hear about what is under the hood shortly.

Lenovo ThinkPad Honeycomb Tablet on sale today for $499

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 12:48 PM PDT

All flavors of the new Lenovo ThinkPad tablet are now for sale today. We first heard about these tablets back in June and we later saw the press images leaked in July. Today they are offering both the Wi-Fi and 3G models of the business minded ThinkPad on their website starting at just $499.

Like most Honeycomb tablets the ThinkPad runs with a 10.1″ IPS display with a high-resolution of 1280×800. It features the popular NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1 Ghz processor with 1GB of ram. They are offering 16GB, 32GB, and even a 64GB option is available with the latter two both coming with 3G available.

For full details on the new Lenovo ThinkPad tablet check out our hands-on post or the video above. Unlike a few recently released tablets the ThinkPad offers not only the same specs as most but you also get a micro USB and a full USB 2.0 port, HDMI out, full size SD slot and then the SIM card slot for 3G connectivity. While Honeycomb does not require the hardware buttons seen on most smartphones Lenovo chose to keep these on board with the ThinkPad for further useability.

For all the options and choices available head over to the Lenovo Store for more details, pricing, and availability. They will start shipping next Monday on the 29th of August.
