Google+ Android App Updated: Improves Notifications, Reshare, Adds 38 languages

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:36 AM PDT

Google has just pushed out yet another update for the popular Google+ Android application with some much needed improvements. The list is quite large and a good start indeed but the last update aimed to fix notifications but those are still a bit buggy for me. One of the biggest improvements I see right away is the +mentions now autofill from your Circles. Something that worked great online but was not as easy on the mobile application.

They claimed to have added stability and improvements to the notification system so hopefully that works better than before, support for over 38 new languages for the Android app have also been integrated. The biggest improvement in my opinion is that we now can do +mentions that populate from your circles. On the mobile app they had to be in your Google contacts until now, that one one of my biggest concerns.

Here is the full changelog:

-Improved notifications reliability
-”_add to circle” notifications shown in bulk
-Share stream posts to individual people
-Clicking a +mention takes you to the person's profile
-+mentions now autofill from your Circles
-Stream no longer resets to top when screen is rotated
-Nearby accuracy
-Start a 1:1 huddle from a person's profile or a group huddle from a circle profile
-Hide 1:1 huddles
-Clickable links in huddles
-Improved autocomplete when adding a person to a huddle

The Google+ Android App update should be live on handsets right now, and is also available in the market by clicking here. Get that update and start sharing and +1′n with all your friends and circles.

Samsung Galaxy S II will not be offered by Verizon Wireless?

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:21 AM PDT

This is a bit depressing, in some sad news new details are coming out regarding the upcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone. With the official US launch on the 29th new details are claiming that the biggest carrier here in the US, Verizon Wireless, will in fact NOT be carrying the Galaxy S II phone at all. This is according to the Wall Street Journal and then confirmed by Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney.

At first we thought the leaked Samsung Stratosphere could be the SGSII, we’ve now heard it will be a mid-range Samsung slider and not the Galaxy S II we were hoping for. With plenty of great phones already in the Verizon Wireless line-up and even better phones like the upcoming Samsung Nexus Prime they have no reason to carry the SGSII.

“We have an extensive portfolio that offers customers a great variety of devices, including the Samsung Droid Charge,” said Brenda Raney, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman. She declined to elaborate.

Some may see this as bad news, but if Verizon is in fact getting the rumored Samsung Nexus Prime then I don’t see this as that bad, although users will then have to wait even longer for their next purchase, or just get that Droid Bionic we keep hearing about. We have heard and even seen confirmed pictures of the other three main carriers all getting the SGSII here in the U.S so take this as you will. What do you guys think of this move by Verizon?

NVIDIA giving away 5 Acer Iconia A500 Tabs Free at the new Tegra Zone

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:04 AM PDT

Earlier today we reported about the brand new TegraZone.com from NVIDIA aiming to show users all about NVIDIA Tegra 2 Android powered devices. It’s also a great place to see all the latest and greatest games geared specifically for Tegra 2 devices such as the Acer Iconia Tab A500 Honeycomb tablet. Even better is they are giving away five for FREE.

Earlier this morning the new website was launched and they have some exciting things at the site as well as tons of game reviews (plenty by us). While snooping around we noticed the community portal has forums and chat areas. One of the best parts about snooping around in the community area is we’ve spotted a banner where NVIDIA is giving away 5 FREE Acer Iconia A500 Honeycomb tablets.

If you’d like to enter to win make sure you click here and sign up before it ends come September 25th for your chance to win 1 of 5 new tablets. Even if you don’t win the tablet you could still get a fancy NVIDIA T-shirt, and you get to enjoy all that the new TegraZone.com has to offer of course.

Good Luck!

Verizon Outs Android-Compatible Intuit GoPayment Credit Card Reader

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 10:47 AM PDT

You know how when you go to those future stores where clerks have credit card scanners on their phones, you don’t have to go to a sales desk because there IS NO SALES DESK? Imagine if you had the same sort of situation going on in your store – or better yet, imagine if you had your own mobile business going on and all you had to do to get some cash from someone was to swipe their card along the side of your Android device? That time has come, the hardware is here, and Verizon’s got your back. What Verizon has revealed today is no less than the Intuit GoPayment App and Credit Card Reader, a hardware/software combination that’ll allow your small business to go mobile instantly.

What you’ve got here is a little piece of hardware that plus in to your Android device (basically any Android device, mind you,) and works with an app that you’ve got on your smartphone or tablet to make grabbing payments as easy as swiping a credit card and tapping a few buttons. And what does this little thing plug in to, you might ask? The audio jack. Weird! Of course, if you want to know, this system also works on BlackBerry and iOS as well, so everyone can jump onboard should they not want to make the cool choice and jump to a brand new Motorola Droid 3 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE.

Small business owners will delight in their ability to work with the app to quickly create a list of frequently sold items, making the whole process of adding sales tax, tips, and customized receipts as simple as possible. Sensitive credit card data is never stored on the device, and all data is encrypted twice, one via the card reader itself and another via the GoPayment app. Transactions can be synced once they’ve been made with recent versions of QuickBooks on PC, Mac, and soon online, all of this through GoPayments’ extended ecosystem.

The actual hardware is completely free after you activate your GoPayment account and sent a mail-in rebate of $29.97 – aka you’ve gotta lay down that price at the register, but you get it all back once you mail for it. The way Verizon and GoPayment makes money on this whole situation is through a percentage of your transactions. They do mention that “basic service has no monthly, transaction or cancellation fees, and offers a competitive 2.7 percent discount rate for swiped transactions,” while “a paid version of GoPayment is also available for $12.95 a month and provides a low discount rate of 1.7 percent for swiped transactions.” Check out the full details on pricing in the gallery below.

At the moment it does not appear that you need to have a Verizon-carried device to work with GoPayment, and all of these services and the one bit of hardware are available starting today.

HTC Sense UI 3.5 Screenshots Leaked

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 10:47 AM PDT

We have been hearing from a few different sources that a new HTC Sense UI 3.5 is headed to a few upcoming smartphones from HTC. One of those being the HTC Bliss we showed you again yesterday. While the leaked photos didn’t show us the new user interface, today they have leaked for your viewing pleasure and we have all the goods after the break below.

The problem with HTC Sense UI 3.5 is it had hardware requirements that came with it making a few older phones or ones not as “capable” as HTC said, be able to run the new UI. With Sense UI 3.5 those elements will all be added into a more refined experience and will be able to run on more hardware like the mid-range HTC Bliss linked to above. So far I’m liking what I’m seeing thus far, but you never know until it’s finally released what it will really look like.

If the new icon idea in the image above is the new look, I’m totally liking this. Getting rid of the ugly curved bar on bottom that launched the app tray or phone dialer seemed old and out of style in my opinion. This new icon on each side looks sharp, clean, and new. Something the Sense UI has been needing for a while. The weather widget looks a bit large and covers almost the entire screen its being used on, all the way down to those new buttons below.

Our sources did state this was a beta build of the new Sense UI 3.5, we are already liking what we’ve seen so far and can’t wait for more screenshots that should be coming shortly.

Motorola Droid 3 Receives Root Access

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 10:30 AM PDT

Thanks to XDA Forums member djrbliss, who hasn’t ever actually touched the Droid 3, found a nice and simple exploit that has allowed the Droid 3 to be successfully rooted. He has yet to unveil the full exploit used but he was nice enough to give everyone some instructions to do this on their own. No one click root here, this requires some ADB shell skills so make sure you know what you’re getting into.

They have posted a picture over on Twitter showing the screenshot app Drocap2 accessing and being granted superuser permissions so that is a good thing. The first thing that came to my mind when I read the Droid 3 had been rooted, is how easy could this same exploit be used to gain access to the upcoming DROID BIONIC. If this is indeed a simple exploit lets just hope Motorola doesn’t figure it out, or even worse delay the phone again to find it.

The instructions may not be extremely easy for the average one-click-root type user, others with more experience should be able to root their Droid 3 quite easily using the instructions provided. Apparently he was able to edit some simple to find proprietary Motorola code and achieve the root access. As always do this at your own risk, full details at the source link below.

Amazon Leaks Names for Kindle Air, Wave, Earth, Water, Scribe

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 10:02 AM PDT

So we’re thinking either the Wave and the Water are still in contention for the aquatic-based tablet of the future and/or they’ve decided to add a pen tool to the product instead of setting it aflame. Air, Water, Earth, Fire, and… Heart… are the basic elements as far as ancient storytelling goes, and if Kindle’s collection of domain names continues as it has been, the likelihood of what we’re assuming will be an another Android-based Kindle named after these earthly basics increases day by day. As you’ll note over on our sister site SlashGear, we’ve been following this collection for a short while now. Kindle time approaching?

As you may also have been following along with the non-Kindle-named epic tale of the oncoming Amazon tablet. Of course we now assume these are one in the same, but you never know. What we’re seeing in the most recent rumors is at least one 9-inch tablet with an IPS LCD display, no camera, and a price set to compete with any and all contenders. One e-reader to rule them all?

As far as these domain names go, each of them appears to have been registered for in the past few months, and at least a couple of them were scooped up from previous owners once they just happened to have been dropped inside a month of one another. What this tells us is several possible things: one, Amazon is simply picking up every conceivable name having to do with their already owned Kindle line. Two, they were the people who owned these names before and just recently dropped ownership so they could officially rule them from the central Amazon point.

KindleEarth.com and KindleWater.com are the most recent, KindleAir.com, KindleWave.com, and KindleScribe.com were also all registered for within the past several months. All of them have been confirmed to be owned by Amazon. Fusible knocked out a method for confirming ownership of the Earth and Water domain names, the rest you can do a simple WhoIs search with and find that they’re all owned by Amazon quite simply.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and more outed by Samsung Unpacked App

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 09:59 AM PDT

It looks like a few prying eyes were digging around in the new Samsung Unpacked Android App and found some goodies. From what we are seeing Samsung has either on purpose or inadvertently unveiled three of their upcoming products they are announcing at the Unpacked Event. We are seeing the name Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and that gets me a little excited. a 7.7″ Android Honeycomb Tab would be awesome.

You can always unzip an Android app and look through the contents and it appears a lucky reader over at thisismynext stumbled upon the details and the image posted below. Pretty interesting indeed. We are seeing the Galaxy 7.7 Tab, as well as the Samsung Wave 3 which will probably be the last smartphone with the Samsung Bada OS, then the mysterious Samsung Galaxy Note.

Seeing the term Galaxy on the Samsung Galaxy Note makes us think Android obviously, but what this device will be we aren’t really sure. We have not heard of the mysterious name before so we’ll probably have to wait and see. Maybe a Galaxy Tab type device with stylus support for “note” taking, something to complete with the Kindle, or even a rename for a music player like the Galaxy Player. What do you guys think of the name “Note”, and how do you feel about a 7.7″ Galaxy Tab?

Qik Premium Outed Today

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 09:28 AM PDT

All you hyper-avid followers of Android Community and the Android platform in general may already be aware of the Video Chat app Qik. Heading to our Qik portal and you’ll see instantly how much the Qik ecosystem has already penetrated the Android universe – take a look specifically at the news bits surrounding Skype’s acquisition of Qik and the fact that the app shows up out of the box on the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G, HTC Evo 3D, LG Thrill 4G, and more. What Qik is announcing today is a brand new premium version of their already popular video chat app, available for download or upgrade (if you’ve already got the app) today.

What this new app offers for free for 30 days and $4.99 a month after that is everything you’re used to Qik Video doing plus a list of upgraded options. The first upgrade addition is Qik Desktop. While before you were able to grab videos via your Qik cloud on the web, you’re now able to use this new software to access your videos “cord free” and keep them on your own personal server, external storage, or wherever you want. Next there’s Anytime video mail – while non-premium users may now receive video mail from their Qik Premium friends, only Premium users can now send and receive Qik video mail.

The third and arguably most valuable bit of this equation is Unlimited video downloads and storage. Upload em all then download em all, all day long. Next there’s Gallery uploads – straight from your non-Qik gallery you can upload all your videos to your Qik cloud. HD and 3D video recording are now supported, you and Qik now able to both record and share videos that are both HD and 3D – device permitting, of course. Qik Premium also affords you, lastly, a dedicated email address for priority support should you want it – thusly Qik is selling you a premium experience here. Will you bite?

Have a look at a brand new video filmed by Skype with Qik on this new set of abilities:

Judge keeps Samsung tablet ban in place until September 9 in Germany

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 09:22 AM PDT

Apple has been hammering Samsung hard in Europe with allegations that Samsung has copied its products like the iPad and iPhone. Apple brought the case before the ITC and the ITC has banned the sale of some products across all of Europe. Popular devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S II are banned for instance. The Samsung Galaxy tablets are banned still in Germany.

German courts have kept the ban on the sale of the tablets inside the country in place until at least September 9. That means that Samsung will miss showing its tablets off at IFA kicking off next week. Samsung had previously asked for a decision ahead of the IFA show. The judge has said that there were overarching similarities between the Galaxy Tab and the iPad.

If the judge issues a ruling on September 9, it could go either way. There is no indication of if the judge is leaning towards siding with Apple or with Samsung. Samsung could be forced to pay damages and licensing fees to Apple if it loses the court case in Germany. A loss could also open Samsung up to suits in other countries as well.

NVIDIA Kal-El quad-core optimized Sprinkle Coming Soon, Tegra 2 version Out Today

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 06:13 AM PDT

This Thursday the developers at Mediocre announced not only the release of their radically awesome Sprinkle puzzle game as right this second, today, on the Android Market, but the fact that they’re currently working with NVIDIA to optimize the game for the quad-core Project Kal-El processors of the near future. Don’t get your pants in too much of a bundle at the moment, though as they’ve not let slip anything about release date in their excitement over the release of this already excellent water and fire-based game.

As you may already know, we’ve got a full blown review of Sprinkle as it exists in pre-release, though the full version is sure to be very VERY similar – that being the version you’re downloading today. Mediocre is the first group to officially announce their intent to literally be in works to optimize an already-existing game for the futuristic Project Kal-El quad-core processor from NVIDIA.

Sprinkle Review

As NVIDIA and the developers at Mediocre put it:

It's clear that two processing cores deliver better performance than a single core. Add even more cores, and you get even more performance. To that end, Mediocre is preparing a future version ofSprinkle that will take advantage of NVIDIA's upcoming quad-core Kal-El mobile processor.

As Mediocre puts it, "With Project Kal-El around the corner, these are interesting times for mobile game developers – especially for those of us who are making physics-based games. We think Sprinkle is a good example of how to use complex physics simulation for gameplay and not just effects."

Of course this doesn’t mean that there aren’t ANY other developers working with NVIDIA to optimize games for their next SoC. From the first time we heard of the NVIDIA Project Kal-El Quad Core Super Chip back during Mobile World Congress 2011. In fact, one of the games we’ve already seen running on an early version of the quad-core processor was Great Battles: Medieval which you can see in action here:

Great Battles: Medieval on Kal-El

Then there’s NVIDIA Project Kal-El running a game that’s not yet released called Glowball. This game also looks utterly fantastic, if I do say to myself:

NVIDIA Project Kal-El Demo: Globall

You can purchase Sprinkle from Mediocre [on the Android Market] right this moment for a grand total of $1.99. It’s rated “Everyone” and requires Android 2.3 Gingerbread and up, this of course including Android 3.0 Honeycomb for Android tablets as well.

Parrot Asteroid Android car stereo gets price and launch date

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 06:01 AM PDT

Back during January when CES was in full swing, one of the stranger Android products we ran across was the Parrot Asteroid Android-powered car stereo. We had some of the details back in January, but the real things we wanted to know like when it would land and how much it would cost were a mystery until now. Parrot has now announced the pricing and the launch date for the Asteroid.

The car stereo will land in October and will have a MSRP of $349. I thought that the Asteroid might cost more than that, so the MSRP is not bad for those interested in what the radio has to offer. One of the biggest downsides to me is the fact that the Asteroid is a single DIN unit. Every newer car I have been in uses a double DIN radio.

Parrot also announced that when the Asteroid hits the market it will have six apps to go along with it including Maps, Roadtrip, Wikango, Weather, TextFriendly, and TuneIn apps. These apps are for music and other services. The Asteroid connects to the internet via WiFi from your phone, a hotspot, or a USB dongle. The LCD on the radio is 3.2-inches and the Asteroid supports FM radio and lots more.

PapayaMobile hits 25M Android users

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 05:24 AM PDT

PapayaMobile bills itself as the leading social gaming network for Android and the company has announced a milestone. Since the beginning of 2011, the company has experienced massive growth with Android users with over 940% growth. This week the company announced that it has now passed 25 million users and the network is continuing its growth. The company also offered up more details on its growth and network.

Papaya has handled more than 11 million paid transactions using its own virtual currency. The average revenue per paying user on the network is $22.60 per month. The average revenue per user across all Papaya Game Engine games is more than $10 monthly. The company claims that on average 1 in 5 users purchase virtual currency in the games that use the Papaya Game Engine.

The single largest spend by a user on the network was $4,440 and according to Papaya popular titles on its network earn on average over $20,000 monthly. China is listed as the fastest growing market for the firm with more than 500% growth since January of this year with growth in Europe at 224% and in the US growth is 222%. I wonder what game the user that spent $4,440 in a month was playing.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO, Names Tim Cook the new Chief

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:57 PM PDT

Just breaking news this evening Steve Jobs has officially announced today that he will resign as the CEO of Apple. No this isn’t a joke either. He has officially announced in an open letter to all board of directors and the entire Apple community that he will no longer be able to meet his duties and expectations as Apple's CEO. I know we are all about Android, but this is big news.

Without getting into too much details here I’ll go ahead and throw up the entire open letter for everyone to read.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Shocking news to say the least. While it has been known for a while that Steve had been dealing with a few health issues this has came without warning and is a huge surprise to everyone. This is a sad day in the technology world, even though we love all things Android here Apple played a large role in the success of Android. Apple has confirmed that Jobs will indeed stay on as Chairman. More details as this story develops.

Google Docs Updated, Adds 46 new languages and image attachments

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:40 PM PDT

It looks like everyone’s favorite documents application for Android we all know as Google Docs received a little update today. It’s all about that cloud-based web functionality here. The main feature in the update today is the ability to quickly and easily upload photos to Google Docs and the web clipboard. This is a great feature for mobile users and something we can use on-the-go with ease.

Now from in the app or conveniently on the Android widget users can select the camera and directly take a photo with their smartphone. Once the photo has been snapped you have three options. Upload files without conversion, Convert file to Google Docs format, and Send to Web Clipboard. Now from either your mobile device, or anywhere else you are using Google Docs you can quickly access the cloud-based web clipboard used by Google Docs to get access to those photos or documents you’ve uploaded. Neat huh?

Google’s team has also made opening and sending easier and now has more options. You can now open documents with any compatible viewer application or send a doc as an attachment through email or another compatible apps on your phone. They’ve also been nice enough to add support for an additional 46 new languages with this latest update. If you’ve been waiting for your language to have support most likely today’s update brought on goods you need to get to work.

For more details and pictures head over to the Google Docs Blog.

Samsung GT-19220 Photo Leaked, Packs a huge AMOLED display [Update]

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:15 PM PDT

Here is a photo that will most likely get those rumor mills stirring again. We aren’t sure exactly what we are looking at, or how big the screen is but comparing it to the 4.0″ display on the Galaxy S next to it, I’d say it’s pretty large. Sources are claiming this to be the new Samsung GT-I9220 that we recently saw on a leaked Samsung roadmap. While the leak is claiming it to possibly be a 5.29″ AMOLED display with a 1280x720p resolution the leaked roadmap suggests something much smaller for the GT-I9220.

Update: After a few tips and a closer look this is nothing more than the 5″ Samsung Galaxy S Player. As in not a phone, only Samsung’s recently seen music player to compete with the iPod. Sorry guys!

Details are still a bit blurry but they are stating this Samsung beast will indeed have a high resolution Super AMOLED display with a 1280x720p resolution. Rocking a blazing fast 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor and more. While this device could in fact have a huge 5.3″ display the leaked roadmap suggests the GT-I9220 would have only a 4.3″ screen but the image shown above clearly shows something larger than that.

Could this be the GT-I9250 that we also heard about. The roadmap suggested that device would have a 4.65″ AMOLED display and that would line up a bit better with the size of the screen shown in the leaked image. Our sources at AndroidUP claim this might be called the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus at launch and we might see it sometime around October 24th. Either way the photo sure is exciting, we don’t have a lot of details but would love to get some hands-on time with the phone.

HTC Bliss photos caught in the wild again

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 02:12 PM PDT

The HTC Bliss smartphone for women that we have seen a few rumors about is hitting the streets again today. Another sighting has appeared and someone was able to snap a few good, quality photos of the device. We originally heard a nice greenish color would be wrapped around the device but these new pictures make it hard to tell.

A few weeks ago we also received a few leaked photos of the Bliss but they were blurry and didn’t reveal much so these new ones are much appreciated. We’ve heard a few rumors that this device will be aimed right at the ladies in the smartphone world, sort of like the HTC Glamor. Seen next to another device in the pictures above we can assume it will most likely have a 3.7″ display and we’ve already heard an 800 Mhz processor, 5MP camera on the rear with VGA front camera for video chat.

Original reports suggested it would have a charm type attachment or something that would light up whenever a user receives a notification. The picture above it appears the back has a different texture as you can see that lip on the bottom. Suggesting maybe the bottom of the phone or the back will light up upon receiving said notifications. That original idea can be seen here. Sources are also claiming Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well as Sense UI 3.5 and that the phone will have a few unique features other HTC offerings do not. This lines up nicely with the fact it will be aimed for women and might have a unique notification lighting system and more.

We should be hearing more about the HTC Bliss shortly, maybe during the upcoming HTC event so be sure and stay tuned.

ESPN Fantasy Football App for Android Now Available

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 12:41 PM PDT

Just in time for the NFL season to get started ESPN has released their Fantasy Football 2011 App for Android. This is the perfect app for fantasy owners allowing you to manage your team on-the-go wherever you are. Recently the official NFL app was released and now just a few days later ESPN launches their own. I’ll be sure to give them both a try over the next few days and let you all know what app I like best. I have fantasy teams on both sites so I’ll be using them both all season most likely.

The new app for 2011 offers full team management for multiple teams and leagues, lets you add, drop, and even trade players all on-the-go. With real-time stats and all sorts of notifications from scoring, injury reports, and more. Not to mention news for your specific league so you can keep track of everyone else you plan to be dominating all season long.

Now I don’t want to make enemies with my readers but I’m going to go ahead and post a screenshot with MY TEAM this year for ESPN Fantasy Football. I know it’s stellar, and I’ll be winning most of my games with my great overall draft list. Please don’t be jealous and I wish you all luck.

Oh yea! Not to mention on my bench I have Anquan Boldin, Jahvid Best, Matt Cassel, Mike Tolbert (for when Mathews goes down again), Malcom Floyd and a few others I wont name. This is going to be an exciting year that is for sure. Feel free to drop your team details in the comment section below so we can compare. OK so my team might not be the best, and I didn’t get Vick or Rodgers but you know Rivers will have an amazing year with Vincent Jackson and Gates both back and healthy. Game on!

ESPN Fantasy Football 2011 App for Android is available in the Android Market right now by clicking here.
