| Samsung Galaxy S II Family Portrait Leaks, No Verizon in Sight Posted: 26 Aug 2011 11:46 AM PDT While the Samsung details and rumors keep on flooding in the past few days we now have what appears to be an official Samsung Galaxy S II line-up photo that was leaked. What do you know, no Verizon is shown here either. Some are calling this a “family portrait” of the main three carriers to receive the Galaxy S II here in the US. Looks like Verizon either made a bad choice to not carry it, or has something better on the way.
It was a long wait, almost too long but these appear to be the designs for the US variants. They are all being announced this Monday, August 29th at the NYC event as long as the weather doesn’t cause too many problems (Thanks Irene). Now I’m sure all of you on Big Red are wondering what is next for Verizon, and what are they going to use to replace this other than the Bionic. We have seen reports that the Samsung Nexus Prime was spotted at Verizon HQ, then yesterday Verizon confirmed they will not carry the Galaxy S II. With more confirmations appearing that Samsung will in fact make the Nexus Prime. Samsung is also preparing an upgraded Galaxy S II and will show it off at IFA it sounds like Verizon is taking a pass because they have something better up their sleeves. Plenty of that is speculation while others are official details either way we have some exciting things in the next few weeks ahead. I have a feeling Samsung is looking to rain on Motorola’s dual-core 4G LTE Bionic parade, but that’s just a guess. [via PocketNow] ) |
| Samsung to Unveil Upgraded Galaxy S II at IFA Posted: 26 Aug 2011 10:42 AM PDT We are hearing a few different things here as of late and now new reports are stating that Samsung is all set to unveil a new and upgraded Samsung Galaxy S II device, or maybe the Galaxy S II Plus. I can’t see this happening when the U.S. still hasn’t even received the SGSII to begin with but we are hearing an upgraded model rocking 4G LTE and more will be announced.
We are hearing the new upgraded model will feature a few very welcomed changes although the original was still a beast and one of the best phones around as it was. The new details are claiming a speed boost and we will see a 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, as well as 4G LTE inside. The screen will be bumped up to 4.5″ and feature the new Super AMOLED Plus display but we aren’t sure on resolution but 1280x720p would be nice. It’s being touted to be the world's first LTE/WCDMA/GSM multi-mode phone and even come with NFC capabilities too. According to Sammy Hub, it has a slight redesign and will feature a nice brushed aluminum rear rather than the usual plastic cover. Then that all important 4G LTE speed is also on board. This not only sounds like, but also looks like the recently leaked Samsung Celox 4G LTE (pictured below). It had a larger display and that brushed metal back, the only problem I’m unsure about is the 4G LTE. Yesterday reports confirmed that Verizon would not be getting the Samsung Galaxy S II and they have a stellar line-up of phones and didn’t need it. So who would get this new Galaxy S we are about to hear of?
It could be an upcoming device launching on AT&T but they are still at least a few months away from having an up and running LTE network worth launching a flagship phone on, so all these details coming in seem to only make things more confusing. Either way a Samsung Galaxy S II or III with a larger screen, faster CPU, 4G LTE, and some brushed aluminum instead of cheap plastic build quality sounds amazing and I’d happily toss that in my pocket. | Sony Ericsson Nozomi Flagship Phone may see worldwide launch Posted: 26 Aug 2011 10:06 AM PDT The Sony Ericsson team is still alive and kicking and now some new details are claiming we might see the SE Nozomi (aka LT26i/LT26a) handset launch soon. What is even better is this new HD powerhouse smartphone may see a global release according to some leaked information. The SE Nozomi first leaked back a few weeks ago and even though it probably wont have a dual-core processor the rest of the hardware specs sure look impressive.
If the leaked details are to be believed the Nozomi will have a 1.4 Ghz Qualcomm S2 single-core processor, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, as well as a 4.3″ HD display with a 1280x720p resolution. We’ve seen that listed on a lot of devices over the past few weeks so most likely it’s coming, and soon. The initial details on this phone were slating it for an early fall launch over in Japan but thanks to a few leaked tips, it is not said to be launching this fall in Japan but also will see a global release. The model numbers listed above (LT26i/LT26a) appear to be two different models that may end up launching in the U.S. with different frequencies and on two separate carriers. Sony hasn’t launched a lot of Android devices statewide but things may soon be changing. [via Xperia Blog] ) |
| LG Enlighten Sale Image Appears for This Weekend Posted: 26 Aug 2011 10:01 AM PDT You’re going to be able to be picking up LG’s latest effort for less than a dollar right out of the gate if you happen to be heading to Wal-Mart this weekend – LG Enlighten being the name of the game, a 97 cent pricetag being the cost. What we’re looking at here is a mid-range Android slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and what MIGHT be Android 2.3 Gingerbread. That or you’ll just be working with FroYo – either way this device isn’t going to be busting apart the oncoming dual-core competition any time soon, so it’s not truly necessary for the world’s most advanced version of Android to be on this relatively small 3.2-inch display having smartphone.
The LG Enlighten looks to be a fabulous choice for those looking to get into the Android game for the first time with a 320×480 pixel resolution display, 800MHz processor, and 3 megapixel camera on the back. Also notice that it’s carrying the same in-display menu buttons on the right trend we’ve been seeing lately in Android devices, starting with the HTC Status here in the USA then popping up again in a few different Samsung devices. Look good to you? It’s been sliding around for far too long already if you ask me. UPDATE: those of you with slide-out QWERTY keyboard-toting Android devices — what does your homescreen look like when the keyboard is popped out? This Enlighten device from LG will be rolling out on Verizon with 3G connectivity, a microSD card slot capable of holding up to 32GB, and will have a perfectly generous 1500mAh batter attached. We’ve also got word that this device may be hitting US Cellular and Cellular South soon as well. For a buck, this Android device doesn’t look half bad. Look good for your new-to-smartphones uncle Jimbo? [via WallMart Local Ad] ) |
| Samsung Nexus Prime Confirmed Twice Today Posted: 26 Aug 2011 09:36 AM PDT Every once in a while there’s a day when a device you’ve been waiting for for what seems like an eternity (since the last Nexus device came out, even,) where you get a dash of sand in the face. Today is that day, and it’s happening twice. It’s as if Samsung is saying – look, not only do we have this ultimately awesome device coming out, we’re going to confirm that fact two times today, both times in completely separate manners and both times without so much as a peep as to what this device’s specifications are really going to be. Harsh!
The first appearance of the Nexus Prime today has been a Wi-Fi certification note. While I suppose this does actually give a “peep” as to what this device’s connectivity over Wi-Fi is going to be, every device under the sun essentially has 802.11 a/b/g/n these days. Instead the treat here is the fact that the device (Samsung GT-I9250) is indeed inching nearer and nearer a real life release. You know a device is going to be a big deal when seeing it appear on the Wi-Fi certification page is worth a news bit! The next appearance comes in the form of an easily faked cease and desist letter apparently handed over to the folks at GEEK – or at least handed over to them by an anonymous source perhaps. This letter appears very much to confirm the existence of the so-called Nexus Prime by calling out the recipient as having illegal possession of data files (in this case the firmware) directly relating to the smartphone in question. Of course, once again, this could very easily have been typed up by any schmo on the street just as easily as it could have been typed up by Samsung, but we can dream, can’t we? Click thumbnail for full view of supposed letter: Is this only the latest in a long line of Ice Cream Sandwich-toting Nexus Prime teasers leaving us wishing for more? Yes, yes indeed. | Motorola DROID Bionic Appears on video giving us a software rundown Posted: 26 Aug 2011 09:30 AM PDT In other exciting news this Friday morning we have more of that illusive and hard to find DROID Bionic. No really, this thing has been leaked more than a few times but today we have a pretty in depth video showing all sorts of good stuff for you guys. We saw it on a blurry video a few days ago, but today its clear and gives us a pretty lengthy rundown of the device and software.
This time around we get a nice view of the entire Moto Blur UI changes to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, we see some new live wallpapers, speedtest results and more so I’ll go ahead and drop the video below for everyone to check out. The leak gives us a nice look at all of the pre-installed applications and in case you guys didn’t notice there seems to be a small bug in the homescreen jump feature clearly shown in the video. We’ve seen recent leaked photos of the Bionic getting OTA updates so maybe they are still making some final touches. This late you’d think all the bugs have been worked out since its been like 4 months or so. Obviously I’d love an untouched and pure Google 2.3.4 Gingerbread experience but that wont be happening anytime soon. Overall the Blur UI looked pretty impressive and like Motorola is finally getting things down as it was smooth and responsive from watching the video. Here’s the official teaser trailer from Verizon for you guys to check out too. [via YouTube] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 to get LTE love Posted: 26 Aug 2011 05:56 AM PDT We mentioned earlier this week that the LTE update for the Motorola Xoom was hitting test groups. Samsung is also announcing LTE news of its own. Apparently, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will also be getting an LTE version. Perhaps more interesting for those of us not in an LTE coverage area, the LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also getting a spec bump compared to the original.
The LTE version of the tablet will reportedly have Android 3.2 and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The LTE flavor will also rock a 3MP camera, 8.9-inch 1280 x 800 resolution screen, and it will be 8.6mm thick. The tablet will reportedly weigh in at 455g. Originally, we expected the LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 to be unveiled at IFA. However, there is a chance that the tablet might be unveiled at a NYC event on August 29 according to reports. The tablet has turned up on <video in the past. You can see the hands-on video of the Tab 8.9 here. I wonder how quickly Apple will file a patent suit covering the Galaxy Tab 8.9. there is no word on pricing or what carrier the tablet will hit when it launches. [via Sammyhub] ) |
| HD Widgets App: Made for Honeycomb and look amazing Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:54 PM PDT I don’t know about you guys but I’m constantly changing my widgets and live wallpapers on my Android devices. HD Widgets brings crisp, clear, and truly HD quality widgets to your homescreen and is available right now in the Android Market.
I went ahead and bought the app to give them a try and so far I love all the options and sizes available. Don’t mind the 110° weather I have here in Vegas today, it was like 114° earlier. Oh and in case your wondering what my awesome live wallpaper above is, you can get that here. Back to the widgets, here we have a few screenshots of HD Widgets by cloud.tv and if you’ve been looking for a nice new set of widgets for your Honeycomb tablet then look no further.
The photo above is a little extreme but that is just a small example of the hundreds of possible choices you have with HD Widgets. They offer so many sizes, color options, background choices, clock styles and colors and more that you will almost certainly find something you like. More will be added soon but with this initial release you get 13 widgets, including 3 over-sized large "tablet only" widgets which look great and span almost the entire length of a 10″ display. The rest are slightly smaller so you don’t have to use all that real estate if you don’t want to, but still want your widgets looking amazing and HD. I’m sure you’re all excited to give these new widgets a try so be sure and head over to the market to download them by clicking here. For now they are only $0.99 cents as an introductory price so hurry and snag em while they’re hot. Click the photos below to see them in their full size glory. ) |
| Motorola Xoom 4G LTE upgrade finally starting for test group? Posted: 25 Aug 2011 03:28 PM PDT All you Motorola Xoom 3G owners may have some exciting news hitting your inbox in the next few days. I wont call it 4G because it still isn’t a 4G device, not to mention that the saying “first 4G LTE tablet” is no longer something Motorola can claim since the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE took that crown. New reports are suggesting the Verizon and Motorola 4G LTE hardware upgrade is now ready to start for the Xoom.
First we saw the Xoom 4G LTE clear the FCC in July and thought it was coming soon, turns out that wasn’t the case and we wouldn’t see it until September even though Verizon’s website said the update was coming in “no time flat”. A few readers are now reporting they have boxed up and shipped off their Motorola Xoom tablets to Motorola to receive the much anticipated upgrade.
The Xoom 4G LTE upgrade will be starting early possibly as soon as next week for "business" and "government" Xoom owners. They have had plenty of time to test the upgrade process but we are hearing this is a “pilot” test of the entire ordeal before the masses get access to the update. Just as expected the upgrade will be free of charge and will be initiated by an email with instructions from Motorola. There are also reports Motorola will send users a pre-paid FedEx shipping box to safely transport your Xoom to the upgrade facilities. Sounds like a lot of work if you ask me. A free upgrade is always welcome, just to bad its taking this long to get everything sorted out. I’d also recommend you backup all user data before sending it off, as it will most likely get wiped out before they return it, just a thought. More details at the via below. Device Info

Although you do have to sign away your contractual rights for 2 years but that is to be expected. Basically sign a new 2-year contract over a Amazon.com and you can have the amazingly fast Thunderbolt with Verizon 4G LTE for only $0.01 cent.
So what are you waiting for, the Bionic? That will be like $299 and we still don’t even have an official release date. Head over to Amazon and snag up this deal while they still have the 4G Thunderbolt in stock. While the Thunderbolt is no HTC Sensation with a dual-core CPU it does have an awesome 4.3″ display, a kickstand (that rocks) and the all important 4G LTE speeds on board. The Thunderbolt still doesn’t have an official update for Gingerbread, but a 2.3 build has been leaked a few times already. | Motorola DROID Bionic Battery Life Photos Leak, Looks Decent Posted: 25 Aug 2011 01:57 PM PDT Since we still have not seen the actual size of the battery that will come in the Droid Bionic, or how long it will actually last this will do. Someone has been nice enough to leak more than a few photos showing the Bionic on both 4G LTE and 3G at different levels of battery life. While these first pictures look good, they are a little deceiving to say the least.
Seeing 14 hours of usage and still showing 60% battery life, over 25 hours and having 15% (below) looks amazing and like the battery life we all wish our Android phones had, this just isn’t the case. These are no way realistic results but they are new images and figured you’d like to see them. Go ahead and right now go to “battery use” on your own Android phone and the “display usage” is probably the first or second one on the list, and has used the most battery. These screenshots show the phone was on idle (as in not being used) for most of the time and the display usage is only at 4%. So while the results look impressive, they aren’t accurate for real life day to day usage.
There is one good thing we can take away from these photos, and that is the battery life will still be decent and probably better than most phones available. We all know and have heard the horror stories of the Thunderbolt only lasting a few hours on 4G LTE even without being used much. So things look to be much improved here with the Bionic. Standby battery life as well as 4G LTE use does seem to be improved here, but I’ll still take these with a grain of salt until I get the device in my own hands. Remember while looking at the usage chart we see no phone calls, no text or SMS app, no games, no browser usage. Calling this “moderate” use is a bit over the top but either way it’s better than nothing right? [via Droid-Life] ) |
| HP TouchPad Android 2.2.1 System Dump Files Now Available Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:37 PM PDT The HP TouchPad has been getting a lot of attention as of late from the entire developer and Android communities. Once the TouchPad price dropped to $99 everyone started running wild with the hopes and dreams of one day soon running Android on said device. Just a day or two later we learned that Android ports were already under way and a few days later one was spotted running Android 2.2.1 out of the box, right from Best Buy.
In case anyone isn’t following the TouchPad Android progress there is also a video clearly showing the HP TouchPad running on Android 2.2.1 FroYo and I’ll post that below. It appears to be a QuIC (Qualcomm Innovation Center) developer unit that somehow managed to get boxed up and sold at Best Buy. Lucky for the entire android world the user was nice enough to get a full system dump of all the files to help out. Now exclusively over at RootzWiki the files are available for download and the port of Android 2.2, 2.3, and hopefully 3.2 Honeycomb can all get a little head start. We mentioned more on this here once before but the port will be called TouchDroid and the amount of support and developers keeps growing by the day. I have a feeling we will be seeing Android on the HP TouchPad sooner rather than later. [via Android Police] ) |
| Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation Coming Soon to Android [Video] Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:08 PM PDT Gameloft has just unveiled the first teaser trailer for the brand new and upcoming first person shooter (FPS) game for Android and iOS. Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation will be coming to Android this fall according to @GameloftAndroid. From the video they’ve provided the game looks awesome, and so does its graphics and I can’t wait to play it. For more details head on past the break and check out the awesome video for this stellar new Android game.
Before we get into it I’ll post the video to get all you gamers excited about this upcoming shooter. It will have multiplayer support and tons of levels so I can’t wait to give it a try. Hopefully it doesn’t launch first on the Xperia Play and then make us all wait a few months, because that would not be cool. Gameloft is calling Modern Combat 3 the best, most realistic smartphone FPS series to date and from the video above that statements looks to be pretty accurate. Those graphics look amazing and I just wish we could get some Tegra optimized versions of the awesome games from Gameloft, but that is wishful thinking. With 13 amazing single player missions, multiplayer support with up to 12 friends and more this will most likely be another excellent game from Gameloft. Hopefully it doesn’t slowly roll out in stages and eventually make it to each device like some games in the past. Stay tuned for more details. [via Twitter] ) |
