Firefox for Android Tablets Unveiled

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 11:13 AM PDT

One of the most popular browsers by Mozilla is coming to Android Tablets. We already have Firefox for Android but it currently only officially supports phones. Today on the Mozilla blog they’ve announced what I’ve heard a few times being called “fennecomb”. This is Firefox for Android honeycomb tablets folks.

Firefox for tablets is an evolution of its phone based predecessor, with some added UI enhancements and changes that will take full advantage of the larger screens added real estate. With awesome tabbed browsing features that work great in both portrait, or landscape mode this will truly be a great browser for mobile devices. Themed nicely along with Android 3.0 Honeycomb it has the same drop down menu’s up top for easy access to configure settings and change themes.

Shown in the photo above in portrait mode multiple tabs no longer take up that precious space on the top of the browser, instead the tabs are singled into one group and accessed via a drop down menu. When in landscape mode they are nicely available on the left side and you can even scroll through multiple tabs. I’m really liking what I’ve seen thus far but sadly we have no official release date or beta at the moment. This is more of a tease for now. Adding features from both the mobile version and the web based experience into one truly optimized for tablets browser this should be exciting when we get more details.

Mozilla also kept the “awesome bar” for quick access to everything. Mozilla is only showcasing the new browser today we don’t have a beta for you to download at the moment but will be sure to report back and get some hands-on time as soon as possible. More details below.

Motorola DROID Bionic accessories and docks arriving at Verizon Stores

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 10:41 AM PDT

In more Bionic news, Verizon stores are now starting to receive all sorts of different accessories for the much anticipated device. Today we are seeing a few leaked photos of the new Motorola Droid Bionic Webtop dock and more hit Verizon stores, making that September 8th launch feel even more legit.

Shown above is the Bionic Webtop dock accessory making your Bionic basically the brain of a computer with a keyboard and dedicated battery. We’ve seen this before with the Atrix but now we are seeing it in stores with “Bionic” attached we are starting to get excited. Sadly no pricing has been revealed at this time, but if the low sales of the Atrix webtop showed us anything it’s that they should probably price it a bit lower.

We recently saw the Bionic appear on video and even received the official teaser trailer commercial too. Everything is lining up nicely for that September 8th release date we’ve been hearing for a while now. If you plan to buy any accessories with the new Droid Bionic make sure to check out the deal Costco will be having at launch. Will you be buying one?

Toshiba’s new ultra-thin tablet to be called the Toshiba Excite

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 10:26 AM PDT

With IFA kicking off any day now we are starting to see leaks of upcoming devices a bit early. Just yesterday we learned about the new Toshiba tablet coming to market soon that is said to be much much thinner than the Thrive. We are now hearing the follow up to the Thrive will be much thinner, and lighter yet still offer things like the full-sized USB port.

Thanks to a few tips the upcoming tablet may very well be known as the Toshiba Excite come launch date. Sources are saying it will be super sexy, ultra-thin, lightweight and running Android 3.2 Honeycomb. We don’t have too many further details but if we see anything at IFA we’ll be there live to report all the juicy details.

While there isn’t anything close to official details suggesting the tablet will indeed be name the Excite, the photo above and a few FCC filings are making us think this will most likely what we all will soon be finding out about. You can expect something along the lines of a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, possibly 4G LTE support and more but until we get more details this is just a rumor for now. Stay tuned for more details.

Quixey App Search Receives $3.8 Million for Development

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:57 AM PDT

With hundreds and thousands of mobile applications available and more being added each day, don’t you wish there was an easier way to search for apps? Recently the App search service Quixey signed a deal with investors for around $3.8 million to help with research, development and to help grow new partnerships. With Quixey users will be able to search for mobile, desktop, and web apps based on what the app actually does.

The company is calling this “functional search” so users will be able to search and find apps based on a certain need, usage, or function rather than just getting average search results from keywords. Instead of seeing popular apps you’ve already heard about based on keywords in the title and description Quixey will actually search based on function. Instead of relying solely on what app developers say about their own products, Quixey incorporates data from review sites, social networks, blogs and more to determine what an app does and this is essentially how the “functional search” works.

Between Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, browser extensions and more there are millions of apps you can search for. While Quixey currently works on all those platforms they are quickly changing and plan to offer some great new features and a dedicated Android app once funding gets rolling. We should be seeing and hearing more from Quixey shortly and will report back once we have more details.

Madden NFL 2012 Now in the Android Market [Update]

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:30 AM PDT

It’s time to get back to football. Going along with the console release of Madden 2012 EA has just released the Android and iOS app. Now available in the Android Market is Madden NFL 2012 and it’s only $6.99 for those interested. While this may be a bit expensive you do get an extensive NFL game with tons of options and playability.

There is currently two Madden 2012 showing in the Android market. One by Electronic Arts, and the other by Electronic Arts Nederland B.V. and the latter one shows not compatible with all my devices for some reason. The regular EA version works with all my phones but sadly no tablet support. With the game just launching today we don’t have a lot of details. Users have been reporting the original Galaxy Tab 7 works with the new Madden but that is unconfirmed.

The game looks fairly polished with tons of attention to detail. All 32 teams are included and players names are listed when you’ve got them selected. We have 3 different game modes such as exhibition, full season mode, and a mode that lets you relive the 2010 playoffs (Go Green Bay). We have the popular hot routes for passing, running, and defense. Even save your best (or craziest) routes as audibles. This is about as much as we’d expect for the mobile version and I plan to give it a test here in the next few days. It’s a shame EA releases this type of awesome game yet doesn’t make it available to the masses we call the Android Army. It’s supported for most of my devices but I’d love to play this on my 10.1″ Honeycomb Tablet.

Huawei Honor Poses for Blurry Cam, Actually Looks Nice

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:10 AM PDT

In a new effort by Huawei we have been seeing some nice products headed to the market and today’s leak is no different. The Huawei Honor has been leaked thanks to a sneaky ninja and his blurrycam. Recently we saw the Huawei Vision and now with the Honor it appears as if Huawei is aiming to up their game.

In the recent past they’ve been known for a few of the “cheaper” or far mid-range products but this latest phone is changing that tune with this latest picture. At first glance I thought it was a Galaxy S or the Samsung Vibrant (lawsuit), but upon a closer look you’ll spot the differences. While the design is similar it is what’s under the hood that matters.

The Huawei Honor has a 4.0″ display, 1.4 Ghz processor (not sure if single or dual-core), Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a huge 1930 mAh battery. On the rear we have a 5MP camera with 720p video capture all wrapped in a thin 9.9mm package. From the photo it appears to be running a close to stock Android experience and hopefully we will be hearing more shortly.

If Huawei is on hand at this years IFA event we should get more details as Android Community will be LIVE in Berlin for this years IFA 2011.

Klipsch unveils Image S4A Headphones for Android

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 08:41 AM PDT

A lot of the time when you are in the market for a set of headphones to use with your smartphone the inline remotes are designed to work with iOS devices only. Klipsch has unveiled it’s first set of headphones made specifically for the Android users out there. The headphones are called the Image S4A Headphones for Android. The headphones have an inline remote and sell for $99.99.

That is a low price for Klipsch headphones that can sell for much more than that. The headphones are listed as coming soon and the inline remote will allow the answering and ending of calls. The mic will also be mutable and support redial function. The headphones have to be paired with the Klipsch Control app to allow customizing of functions.

The remote also allows control of the volume, play/pause of tracks, skipping tracks, and it supports voice search and commands. The headphones are in-ear style and come with multiple tips and a carry case. Drivers are 8.5mm and have a frequency response of 10Hz-19KHz. They also offer noise isolation. You can pre-order directly from Klipsch, but there is no hint on when the product will ship.

OnStar Remote Link app shoots navigation directions to car from Android smartphone

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 05:38 AM PDT

We have talked about the app that OnStar offers for Android smartphones before. The app called RemoteLink has been updated to support a new navigation feature that some drivers will find very appealing. The app allows the user to search for a destination on the smartphone and then send it directly to the vehicle.

Once the destination is sent to the vehicle it can be access audibly from the OnStar Turn-by-Turn system or via the in-dash navigation system inside the car. The app supports all current OnStar RemoteLink-enabled vehicles. The app also allows the user to route themselves to any address in their contacts list or speak a destination using voice search.

The app will also store the last five destinations that the user searched for on the phone. The updated app is set to be available on the Android Market as of today. The new feature will also be added to the iOS app as well (pictured). I can see this being very useful, I often get my navigation device ready the night before a trip and this update would make that easier.

Samsung GT-I9220 Super AMOLED smartphone actually exists

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:57 AM PDT

Back on the 24th of August, a picture was floating around that was at first thought to be the Samsung GT-I9220 smartphone packing its giant Super AMOLED screen. That photo later was proven to be the 5-inch Galaxy S media player. If you thought that meant the rumors of the GT-I9220 smartphone were all false, they were not.

The smartphone is real and the certification sheet for the smartphone has been found on the Wi-Fi Certified website. As you can see on the photo above the device is clearly listed as the Samsung GT-I9220. The smartphone will pack a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED HD screen. The screen has 326ppi and the resolution is 1280 x 720.

The smartphone is also expected to have Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread onboard, a dual core 1.4GHz CPU, and an 8MP camera. This sounds like an impressive device indeed. We are hoping that the phone will break cover officially at IFA 2011 kicking off next week.

Epson expands iPrint app to cover Android smartphones and tablets

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 02:51 AM PDT

Epson has been in the printer market for a very long time. Over the last few years, the company has been rolling out print services to allow the smartphone user to get documents off their mobile phones and onto the printer rather than having things stuck on the phone. To start with, Epson offered print services for iOS devices leaving Android out in the cold.

Epson has now announced that it has expanded its iPrint services to cover Android smartphones with a new app that is on the Android Market. The app allows printing from the Android device to any Epson wireless enabled printer. Support for online services like Box.net, Dropbox, and Evernote is also integrated. The app also supports printing from Android tablets and allows document printing and photo printing.

The app also offers the ability to check printer status and ink levels along with the ability to print a webpage. Advanced features allow the user to choose and print multiple photos, print photos with or without borders, and to choose color or B&W prints. The scanning resolution for images can be chosen and the app allows the print quality to be optimized. The app needs a device using Android 2.1 or higher.

LG Thrill 4G Confirmed by AT&T for September 4th

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 05:14 PM PDT

Well folks, we still haven’t seen any sort of official announcement or press release regarding the LG Thrill 4G also known as the Optimus 3D but today AT&T has confirmed the launch date for September 4th just as previous leaks suggested. While it has been delayed more than a few times at least it will hit the market with a great price.

You all should know plenty about this device by now but if not you can check out our full review here as well as an earlier review of the LG Optimus 3D before it got tagged with the AT&T logo. This 4.3″ glasses-free 3D phone with a dual-core TI OMAP 1 Ghz CPU is quite the powerful phone and just like we mentioned above, it will be on the market at an amazing price.

We have seen prices of just $99 from AT&T with a new 2-year contract rather than the usual $199 price tag. As well as $79 in Target and RadioShack ads. I don’t know about you guys but getting this phone at that price is a stellar deal, and you wont have to wait long either. With AT&T finally saying it will be here September 4th it appears they are ready for some 3D action. Are you?

Cranky Cat Game and Cat Dance Club LWP Review [Video]

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 04:28 PM PDT

It’s time for a cat party on the Android application tip! What we’ve got for you here today is an app double-down, one for a rather awesome app that’ll have you cranking your fingers around in knots for hours, the other a live wallpaper you’ll grow to love should you drink a whole case of Surge before you start staring in the middle of the night in the dark. It’s a disco party and a steampunk masterpiece, both of them on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for you to enjoy here.

First of all have a look at this live wallpaper. Obviously it’s the greatest wallpaper of all time having a set of three kitties at a dance party, the DJ Club Kitty right in the center on the wheels of steel. This live wallpaper will cost you a grand total of $1 USD on the Android Market and it comes highly recommended by my daughter Annie who is not allowed to look at it anymore, ever, ever again. You’ve got the ability to change the size of the wallpaper and the speed at which it flies through your brain in its options panel.

Cat Dance Club on the Android Market for a good time.

Next there’s Cranky Cat, an honest-to-goodness awesome game from the developers at March Entertainment Inc. In this game you’ll have balls flying at a structure in the center of the screen, your goal being to turn the structure on a crank in 360 degrees around the center until the falling balls hit the structure in a way that already-landed balls will match up. You could also call them orbs, if you like, this entire game built in the awesome cut-and-paste format that’s very fitting of the classic simplicity of its mechanics. This is a puzzle game for those who love Tetris or other match em up games and want to take their love to the next level.

The next kitty level, that is.

Cranky Cat on the Android Market for free (demo) or for $2.51 for steamy fun

HP TouchPad Ad Revenue Reaches Android Levels in 10 Days

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 03:50 PM PDT

While it appears that the HP TouchPad is now sold out completely (or so we’re lead to believe,) the cash flow has just begun – in ad form. It’s not HP who will be profiting in this little situation right here, but they can count on developers of apps making a pretty penny in the last week and a half to be reconsidering their move away from webOS in the wake of HP’s ditching of the hardware. As ad agency Jumptap, a group that works with mobile ads for both Android and webOS, amongst others, reports, in just the past 10 days the ad revenue of the TouchPad has nearly caught up with Android tablets.

Android tablets should by now be in their prime, right? Not especially. While nearly every manufacturer under the sun has indeed released an Android tablet of some sort, you’ve got to consider the fact that Honeycomb, Android’s tablet-specific OS, is less than a year old itself. Of course you don’t see the iPad’s numbers on here, but given the amount of apps currently available for the Android tablet-specific world of Honeycomb at the moment, the TouchPad had a pretty good chance of catching up pretty quick.

But this quick? Ten days and the TouchPad has a HIGHER tablet traffic share than Android did 10 days ago. Android remains on top here in this chart, but look at those gains! As our source James Kendrick of ZDNet notes, this chart shows traffic and not sales, but Jumptap assures us that the sales are certainly reflected in the end.

Now the next question is: what will happen to these numbers when the TouchPad has Android running reliably and eventually works with CyanogenMod 7?

We shall see!

All HTC Sensation Models Unlockable now at HTCDEV

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 01:36 PM PDT

The world rejoiced a few weeks ago when HTC first revealed that they’d be working closer with the 3rd party developer community, allowing the world the ability to unlock their device’s bootloaders, resulting in the ability to hack the wave fantastic. Over at the HTCDEV webpage you’re not able to see every single version of the HTC Sensation, including the Euro version, T-Mobile USA, Turkey, Arabic, and yes, even the Bouygues Telecom version. This along with the HTC EVO 3D make up the entirety of the unlockable bootloader library at HTCDEV. Will you unlock?

I think you’ll recall quite well the first time you saw the news that HTC was unlocking bootloaders, especially if you’re the sort of person who likes to gain root on their Android device, this unlocking a whole collection of abilities you’d not otherwise quite have access to. The HTC Sensation too is an ultimately awesome device on it’s own, our review of the Sensation 4G being no less than a triple thumbs up, if you know what I mean. Now what will you do with your device when you get deep inside its guts?

As you may realize already, the Sensation has had the CyanogenMod 7 team working on it for some time. Unlocking the bootloader will allow developers from the deepest pits of creation to access the innards of the device and create a wholly new device from the source should they desire. What new wonders will unfold? We’ll see – starting now!

Galaxy S II USA Release Has 4.5-inch Display According to FCC

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 01:03 PM PDT

It appears that a mister Tommy Thompson from all the way over at Google+ has done some legwork on the images of the Galaxy S II that have been released thus far. What Thompson has done is to take the dimensions as given in the FCC listing of the Epic Touch, aka the WiMAX version of the Galaxy S II being announced tomorrow, and adjusted the images of the original Galaxy S II and the new USA version accordingly. What he’s found is that, what do you know, the display on the USA release may well be the larger 4.5-inch display we’ve been hearing about in a LTE edition of the device.

Now we’re not thinking that this release will be LTE-enabled, but a 4.5-inch display certainly isn’t out of the picture. On the other hand, the icons appear to be larger on the now-larger of the two devices. Does this mean that the resolution will be the same? Does it mean that the FCC report was a farce? Does it mean that the people responsible for the graphic design in this set of devices made the display the wrong size?

So much to think about! Another thing we can hypothesize over is the processor size, the LTE version of the device having an upgraded 1.5GHz processor right out of the box. But again, this might not be that. We can hope though, that added to our long list of wants for this release on several carriers of course. We’ll be in NYC tomorrow to cover the Samsung event, letting you know ASAP everything we hear on the device or devices as they’re revealed. Be there!

HTC Sense 3.5 Video Leaks

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 12:42 PM PDT

It appears that the same folks who brought you the HTC Sense 3.5 screencaps from a few days ago have now got a video out showing off the newest version of the system in full action. This is a full five minute tour of what they’re saying is HTC Sense 3.5 UI, looking not just a whole heck of a lot different from Sense 3.0, the version seen on the newest HTC devices, specifically the HTC Sensation, a rather lovely device if I may say so myself. Transitions have been smoothed out, details have been sharpened, and the whole thing looks just a tiny bit neater – shine and gleam all around.

The largest change you’re going to find here is the complete disappearance of the long standing three-button Sense launcher bar normally sitting at the bottom of your display. Instead you’ll have a completely separate app drawer and phone keys. There’s a brand new ability to add and remove homescreens now, and Widgets have been tweaked as well. Smells nice, doesn’t it?

What we’re seeing here is an upgrade to what yours truly considers one of the better out of the box user interfaces delivered by a manufacturer since Android began. Sense 3.0 has treated this team quite well, this upgrade to 3.5 is set to be the buffed-up and much more magical version of a winner. Expect to see this user interface on the HTC Holiday (aka HTC Raider), the HTC Vigor, the HTC Bliss, and maybe even the HTC EVO Design 4G. Be there!

HTC Holiday to be called the HTC Raider

Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:58 AM PDT

New details about the recently seen HTC Holiday smartphone are now appearing. The phone first leaked showing some impressive specs and now we are getting more news. This time around we are hearing that it will be called the HTC Raider come launch time.

We first saw the HTC Holiday when a prototype model was leaked to the interwebz and was being sold online with a cracked screen. Thankfully we could still read the screen well enough to make out the very awesome specs of the upcoming smartphone. It will have a 1.2 Ghz dual-core CPU, a large 4.5″ qHD high resolution display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and even 4G LTE. All that is explained in the leaks above.

HTC Raider is what we are now seeing as the official name. We’ve seen the name “raider” before in this leaked HTC Trademarks document so it appears those all might actually be coming here soon. This should be one of the first 4G LTE smartphones to hit AT&T and we’ve also heard the name HTC Waikiki but most likely that is the AT&T internal codename. Hopefully we hear more details on the HTC Raider and we will be sure to bring them to you as they come in.
