Motorola Xoom with Android 3.2.2 and 4G LTE Spotted

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 11:25 AM PDT

Just like we mentioned earlier last week a select group of Verizon business accounts and government users were able to send in and update their Motorola Xoom to 4G LTE thanks to Motorola. The link above details the upgrade in detail, now after a 5 day turn around users are receiving their upgraded Motorola Xoom’s in the mail from FedEx with Android 3.2.2 Honeycomb.

We don’t know a lot of details at this point and it’s possible this is just something unique to Motorola but we haven’t seen Android 3.2.1 yet so why the jump to 3.2.2 is beyond me. The Motorola Xoom devices are being returned completely wiped of all user date, upgraded to 3.2.2 and obviously Verizon Wireless 4G LTE speeds. A user over on XDA was kind enough to supply the photo and details.

The XDA user mentions the devices was unlocked and rooted when he sent it to Verizon and it has been returned locked, and obviously no root access since its been wiped and replaced with a new build of Honeycomb. We don’t have any further details but most likely it will be as easy to unlock as “oem unlock” as the Xoom never had a locked down and protected bootloader, why start now.

The screenshot above shows it all, most likely this is a Verizon Employee but this should start soon for everyone else.

Motorola Droid Bionic Live on DroidDoes.com and DroidLanding has been initiated [Video]

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 11:07 AM PDT

It is that time again everyone. The DroidDoes.com and @DroidLanding sites have both been initiated for the Motorola DROID Bionic. This go around Verizon will be having what appears to be a scavenger hunt for the Droid Bionic. What they are calling this is ARena. It will be a Augmented Reality scavenger hunt and they will be giving away tons of Droid Bionic phones to lucky winners as usual.

A new DROID is on the way, and as we all know it is the DROID Bionic. Verizon and DroidDoes is at it again with another huge event taking off today. We will all be running around town on a scavenger hunt from what we are seeing. Get ready to take your laptop and android smartphone and run all over town using an augmented reality application to find your own Droid Bionic.

It appears the DroidDoes.com and @DroidLanding hunt will go until September 7th, leading us right up to the much rumored September 8th launch date. This has all been happening this morning so we will continue to dig for more details and video and will report back with further findings. Get ready for the DROID Hunt!

48 seconds into the video they flash a pretty brunette and a 00:02 on the screen. Any guess on what this is guys?

Motorola Xoom Upgraded to 4G LTE in the wild

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 10:43 AM PDT

More Motorola Xoom 4G LTE news is coming out today. I guess I’ll start calling it 4G since the update is coming soon although we can’t call it the first 4G LTE tablet since the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stole that title. What we are seeing now is a Motorola Xoom with full 4G service in the notification tray below. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks a bit different and although this could just be fake, the possibility that it is real should excite a few Xoom owners.

Users have been patiently waiting for the 4G LTE hardware update to their Motorola Xoom tablets and last we heard it was coming sometime in September after the 4G Xoom made a pit stop at the FCC. September is right around the corner (like tomorrow) so we should be getting news any day now from our friends at Verizon or Motorola regarding the update.

Last we heard Motorola had started a little pre-run of the update and certain users were able to apply and start the upgrade process, but that it still was not ready for public use yet. It has been well over the 3 month time frame they gave when the Xoom was released so you’d expect them to have this all sorted out by now. Either way we are starting to hear reports that the upgrade has started, and a few users have already received the tablet back according to leaked photos from our source. More details should land shortly regarding the upgrade so stay tuned.

Department of Justice Files to Block T-Mobile Buyout, AT&T Responds

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 10:15 AM PDT

The U.S. Government and the Department of Justice apparently aren’t up for allowing AT&T to acquire T-Mobile. Today the DOJ has filed a formal complaint and anti-trust case against AT&T in the acquisition in an attempt to stop it from moving forward. AT&T was quick to respond so check out more details below.

Today AT&T received some bad news and apparently they weren’t expecting this once bit according to statements already made by AT&T this morning. The DOJ antri-trust complain clearly states that they do not agree on this union and here’s a quote from the filing:

AT&T's elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market," the U.S. said.

While we knew many were opposed to the idea I don’t think anyone was expecting this. We recently saw the FCC looking for users to comment and share their opinion and even other carriers were quick to oppose the deal. While this is a huge blow and will add some serious delay, the deal isn’t completely a lost cause but it didn’t get any easier that is for sure.

AT&T has since released a statement and they don’t sound too happy, but they do seem a bit confident still.

We are surprised and disappointed by today's action, particularly since we have met repeatedly with the Department of Justice and there was no indication from the DOJ that this action was being contemplated.

We plan to ask for an expedited hearing so the enormous benefits of this merger can be fully reviewed. The DOJ has the burden of proving alleged anti-competitive affects and we intend to vigorously contest this matter in court.

At the end of the day, we believe facts will guide any final decision and the facts are clear. This merger will:

Help solve our nation's spectrum exhaust situation and improve wireless service for millions.
Allow AT&T to expand 4G LTE mobile broadband to another 55 million Americans, or 97% of the population;
Result in billions of additional investment and tens of thousands of jobs, at a time when our nation needs them most.

We remain confident that this merger is in the best interest of consumers and our country, and the facts will prevail in court.

We have heard many government officials and senators comment on this acquisition I don’t think many were expecting the DOJ to come out like this, either way this entire story is still developing so stay tuned as more details trickle in.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S Announced, 1.4 Ghz CPU and 4.2″ Display

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 09:11 AM PDT

The news is already starting to pour out of IFA and Sony Ericsson has just announced their new flagship Android offering, the Xperia Arc S. We can expect to see this new flagship phone debut this October and while the details are still pouring in we do have some pretty impressive hardware specs for you after the break.

The Xperia Arc S will feature a 4.2″ LED screen with Sony’s “Reality Display” technology. Boosted with a 1.4 Ghz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 MP camera as well as what Sony is calling 3D and 2D sweep panorama photography. You can shoot photos or video then use HDMI out and view the content in full 3D on your HDTV.

The Xperia Arc S will also ship with many of Sony’s increasingly popular services such as Music Unlimited, and Video Unlimited for all the streaming of digital content one would ever need.

Nikolaus Scheurer, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson said: "Xperia™ arc S is the fastest and most entertaining Xperia™ to date and it clearly demonstrates how the Xperia™ family are the best smartphones to experience great entertainment services such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited."

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S is up to 25% faster than the previous generation and will be the best Xperia device yet. All powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. So far we don’t have any actual pricing or availability, but Sony has said it will be available later in the year and possible as soon as October.

Sony Tablet S Review

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:36 AM PDT

After plenty of awesome Sony commercials the time has finally come for Sony to release their much hyped Android Honeycomb tablets. After just recently been officially named the Sony Tablet S and Tablet P they are now ready to rock. Today Sony has announced both the Tablet S and P devices and luckily I’ve been enjoying the Tablet S for a few days and have a full rundown and review for your viewing pleasure.

We have plenty of pictures, details, and video for you all below to check out but first we’ll start with this quick hands-on and walk-through video of the hardware and software.

Sony Tablet S Hands-on Unboxing and software walk-through

We have seen mixed information and leaks as of late so I’ll officially put some of those details to rest. What we have here is the Sony Tablet S and that is the official name. This tablet comes out of the box running Android 3.1 but immediately was updated to the latest version which is Android 3.2 Honeycomb after powering on. We have a 9.4″ 1280×800 resolution display with Sony “TruBlack” screen technology with better colors, true blacks, and less glare. You hardly notice the screen is smaller than most 10.1″ tablets unless you actually have them side by side.

Hardware
To go along with the 9.4″ IPS LED display and unique magazine fold-like design we have some dual-core power. Under the hood is an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1.0 Ghz processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. We have a micro USB and full size SD slot for additional storage as well. The full size SD slot makes adding storage not only cheaper as micro SDHC costs more, but you have more options and higher capacities available.

If you haven’t seen in until now the photo above does plenty of justice. The Tablet S features a very unique design where it’s almost like a magazine cover folded around back of the device. Not only does this make it easier to hold and grip, but they’ve done some weight balancing and management that actually makes it really nice and easy to hold. It may be thicker than the Galaxy Tab but it sure is easier to hold and doesn’t get tiring.

Around the right side we have the power button (with led notification for charging) and the volume up/down rocker buttons, a reset pinhole, and the stereo speaker grills.

Then on bottom we have nothing but the dedicated charging and sync port that will also be used for docking accessories. The charging cable is proprietary and if you forget or lose it you wont be charging this tablet any time soon.

The left of the device features the 3.5mm headphone jack along with the micro USB and full-sized SD slot nicely covered by a removable door. Along the left is another speaker grill and a little spot to attach an included lanyard for easy and safe carrying.

The top and rear have a unique textured finish that not only helps with fingerprints but also gives users a great grip on the device so you don’t always feel like you’re about to drop the tablet. Sony also nicely provided some rubber feet around back to help while laying the tablet down to protect the surface.

Overall I’m pretty impressed with the hardware. Even though most of the device is made from a hard plastic it does not feel cheap or fragile, while staying extremely lightweight. The folded over design was well thought out and the weight management and distribution Sony incorporated really helps while using the device from day to day. The rounded top is almost like a backbone and holding the Tablet S in portrait mode was not only easy, but was not tiring and I didn’t get nearly the fatigue I do from using other tablets. The design isn’t thin, but it’s extremely lightweight and great for reading and while it was daring, I approve of the design and like the different approach.

Software
The software on this beast isn’t anything new, we have Android 3.2 Honeycomb (was updated upon arrival) running smooth and stable as ever. It did however have an over the air update that once accepted and installed kept returning and prompting me to update again and again, not sure what that is about. Everyone should be plenty familiar with Honeycomb so I’ll move right into a few custom changes Sony has included. First off you’ll notice on the top of the main screen they’ve added a few buttons. Almost like widgets but smaller we have easy access shortcuts to popular things such as browser, email, infrared (for remote TV control), and the E-reader client.

These are small and stay out of your way but have actually been really convenient for daily usage as I no longer have to icon hunt for launching the browser or email. Sony has also dramatically changed the application tray just as we saw in these leaked screenshots. The entire design, layout, background and color has all been changed from the standard Honeycomb interface. Sony does allow the user options to change this to their own liking and you see that in the video above as well as pictured below.

You’ll notice in the image above things such as camera, browser, email, video player and more that are all stock for Android have generic blue icons instead of what we are used to for Honeycomb. Sony has confirmed this is pre-production software and they will all be ready at launch. The final software we will likely see custom icons much like how the Sense UI has changed many of these same items.

Sony also has customized the music and video players with their own unique layout and design. The music player has a great artwork concept where you can move around albums and stack them to your liking. Although once I upload a few thousand songs we may run out of room. Clicking an album cover instantly starts playing said music. My only concern is when I later return my stacks had been randomized again so getting everything how you’d like it seemed pointless, but neat either way.

The last major interface change is a “favorites” tab on the homescreen next to the app tray launcher. This will quickly show you all recently opened apps, games, music and more and you can even set your favorite items. This makes one simple place to see your favorite music, games, and even webpages all in the same place instead of each individually and it was a nice touch that I’ve really enjoyed.

Performance
As always here at Android Community we have plenty of benchmark results for everyone to take in and enjoy. We’ve ran CF Bench, Smartbench 2011, Quadrant as always, and even Vellamo for everyone to analyze and compare to their own devices.

I’ll start with Quadrant and the Sony Tablet S with its 1.0 Ghz Tegra 2 CPU scored around 1900. While this is about average for most NVIDIA Tegra 2 tablets we’ve seen thus far, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 did score over 2500 on average during testing.

Smartbench scored about 2900, something that is lower than most smartphones as seen in the photo below. But then they aren’t pushing a 1280×800 screen resolution either. For another comparison the Acer A100 7″ Tab scored 3600 in Smartbench.

We also have Vellamo and CF Bench below for you to check out.

Camera and Battery
Sony claims iPad 2 like battery performance from the Tablet S’ 5,000 mAh pack. From my first initial few days of testing I’ve been getting great results with at least 10 hours of moderate to heavy usage. Last night I ran just about every benchmark you could imagine, browsed the web for a few hours and played way too much of the extremely popular Riptide GP racing game and I still had around 60% battery life. That was after almost 6 hours being unplugged. Using the device randomly throughout the day instead of continuously I can see a solid 24 hours or more of battery/stand-by time.

As for cameras, the Sony Tablet S features a 5MP camera on the rear (sadly no LED flash) and VGA camera up front for video chat and they performed about average compared to most tablets. The rear camera was a bit slow on image capture and the shutter speed was slow enough to make me retake more than a few photos.

Browser
While this will only take a short minute Sony did make it clear that they’ve put some effort into enhancing the browser experience for the Sony Tablet S and P devices. They’ve included some software changes and performance enhancements that really speed up overall browser usage. We decided to try a head-to-head comparison with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and can officially say whatever Sony did worked great. The Sony Tablet S was first to load almost the entire page every single time. It instantly pulls the page up and you barely have to wait to start scrolling or browsing. Overall time wasn’t a lot faster, but the initial boost was much appreciated.

Browser Test Video

Accessories
Sony will also be introducing a few accessories at launch with the Sony Tablet S. Those consist of a bluetooth wireless keyboard that will have dedicated controls for DLNA and their infrared features as well as media controls. This will also work with a wide array of Honeycomb tablets that support bluetooth and it will start at $79. Next they will also be offering a Sony charging cradle dock, while this doesn’t have any outputs such as HDMI out it is a great way to angle the tablet while using the wireless keyboard and it has two tilt settings for those that need more angle. The dock will also be competitively priced at $39 and should be available shortly. Check out the accessories at the end of our hands-on video.

Tablet S Hands-on and Accessories Video

Wrap-Up
This tablet has a lot going for it. With the NVIDIA dual-core power in a neat package that is slightly smaller than most tablets on the market along with a very unique design this is a custom experience that is for sure. Being Playstation certified and bundled with apps such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited, and having DLNA and infrared remote control this is truly a multimedia consumption device. Whether you’re streaming movies with QRIOCITY over DLNA or controlling your Sony 3D HDTV with the infrared remote app users truly have tons of options. These were not fully ready in our review unit and therefore were not tested. We did however test and thoroughly enjoyed Crash Bandicoot.

Pair all that with the latest Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS giving you a fluid, smooth, and easy user experience there isn’t much not to like. Yes, some may be thrown off by the design and I had my doubts at first — but once you get this in your hands you’ll quickly appreciate the design, weight, and comfortableness of this tablet. Pricing is set at $499 (16GB) and $599 (32GB) and should be available mid September.

Sony Tablet P Hands-on [Video]

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 07:33 AM PDT

Today Sony has officially announced and unveiled both the Sony Tablet S as well as the popular Sony Tablet P. Until now these were known as the S1 and S2 but recently earned official names. We told you about the Sony S2 clamshell being named the Tablet P earlier this week and now that Sony has officially announced these devices we were lucky enough to get some pics and hands-on video for everyone to check out after the break.

A quick overview now the specs are fully official, the Sony Tablet P will in fact be launched with Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It features those dual 5.5″ LED displays we’ve seen plenty of recently, combined with the power of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor at 1.0 Ghz. It will come with 512mb of RAM and 6GB of internal storage. The Tablet P will not have different configurations or internal storage options available. It will come with AT&T 4G LTE connectivity and 6GB of internal storage with up to 32GB of additional storage thanks to the SD slot.

Just like its larger sibling the Tablet P will come with a 5MP camera on the rear capable of 720p video capture with a VGA 0.3MP front facing camera. Both tablets also feature Sony’s “TruBlack” display technology which reduces glare while providing superior blacks and color reproduction. With dual-screens that easily fold up for portability and weighing in at under 1 lbs (only 0.83 lbs) the Tablet P will easily and comfortably fit in a jacket or jeans pocket, or in a women’s purse.

The Tablet P will also come equipped with the same options as the Tablet S such as Playstation certification for PS1 and PSP gaming (Crash Bandicoot is awesome), Sony Network services such as Video and Music Unlimited, and the Sony e-reader store. The Tablet P will not offer infrared technology like the S but does feature the same DLNA support for streaming movies, music and more to DLNA supported TV’s.

Full pricing and availability was not yet released so for now we will just have to wonder where they plan to price this tablet with a unique design and features. I personally think it could really be a great portable device and would love to have it for the gaming aspects alone. We will report back as soon as we hear more from Sony regarding pricing and availability. In the mean time check out our hands-on video and pictures below.

Loopt for Android goes international with downloads in 13 countries

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:57 AM PDT

Loopt has announced that its app for Android users is now available internationally. The app is now up for download in 13 different countries. The available countries include Australia, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. More supported countries will be coming soon.

Loopt notes that originally the app was made for feature phones and therefore required a US phone number to register. That has changed with the new update. Now you sign up for the service using an email account. There is no charge to sign up for Loopt. Apparently, the English version of the app is what is going to all new countries.

The app will allow users to find friends, check in, meet up, and discover places. Once those places are found Loopt also allows people to share information about a place. If you aren’t familiar with the app, but are in a country that is now supported you can check out the video below to see what you are into.

Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone in white lands in UK today

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:01 AM PDT

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S II smartphone is hitting the UK today in white. The smartphone will be offered at major retailers starting today, August 31, 2011. The white smartphone is exactly like the original Galaxy S II on the inside, the color is the only difference. This week we had reported that the smartphone would land on September 1, so the device is a day earlier than we though.

So far, Samsung has moved 5 million Galaxy S II smartphones globally since launch, so this is one of the most popular Android smartphones around. Other than the color the hardware inside is the same. The phone is 8.49mm thick and weighs in at 116g. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor inside.

The rear camera is an 8MP unit with AF and LED flash and the front camera is 2MP. The phone can record 1080p video and is DLNA capable. It has Bluetooth 3.0 inside and WiFi with 16GB of storage and a microSD card for expansion. The phone should sell for the same price as the current version.

HTC Runnymede smartphone specs surface

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 04:15 AM PDT

We are always on the prowl for tidbits about new smartphones and other gear that pack Android inside. Some specs on a new HTC smartphone packing a big screen have surfaced. The smartphone is called the HTC Runnymede, which sounds like something that happens after drinking too much old-fashioned British ale. The device has been seen previously on a photo site in EXIF data, but that data on had the name.

Now the full specs list has surfaced and the phone sounds interesting indeed. It will supposedly run Android 2.3.4 gingerbread and have a 4.7-inch 480 x 800 display. Inside the smartphone are a single-core MSM8255 processor and 768MB of RAM. Onboard storage is 16GB and the device is DLNA. The rear camera is an 8MP unit that can record 720p HD video and has dual LED flash.

The front camera is a 1.3MP unit and the phone is less than 10mm thick. It will run HTC Sense 3.5 as well and has bundled set of Beats headphones that are apparently the normal sort of headphones not ear buds. The camera also has some interesting internals like a 28mm wide-angle lens and an f/2.2 and the video can be recorded at 60fps. The only thing I don’t like is the single core processor.

Java creator James Gosling leaves Google for robotics company Liquid Robotics

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:44 AM PDT

It has only been a few months since James Gosling, the geek considered the father of Java, went to work for Google. The thing that was so strange to me when Gosling went to work for Google was at the time Google and Oracle were in a legal battle over alleged use of Java code within Android. That was something that Google denied. Gosling landed at Google back in March and is now gone already.

Why the job hopping? There is no clear indication, but I have to wonder if there was legal pressure since Gosling has to be one of the best people around for information on Java and how to use it for other needs. Gosling left Google for a company called Liquid Robotics that makes robots that are called Wave Glider. The bots glide through the oceans collecting data. Interestingly the company notes that it only makes about a third of its income by selling the data collected.

The rest of the firms income is made from research and selling the robots to other companies. Gosling may have been approached by the CEO of Liquid Robotics Bill Vass. Vass and Gosling were former colleagues at Sun Microsystems. Gosling will be the chief software architect for the robotics firm. Interestingly the robots are powered by wave energy and can swim around the oceans autonomously.

Samsung Galaxy S II USA Accessories Rundown [Video]

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 09:15 PM PDT

The kind folks at Samsung invited us this week to New York City where we were treated to full-fledged reveal of not one, but three new Galaxy S II devices PLUS some docking accessories for those devices to work with. What we’ve got now is a closer look at what those docks are and what they can do. You’ll find that each of these docks is very simple and straightforward AND you can get them in any color so long as it’s black.

Three phones, three docks, each of these new Samsung Galaxy S II phones able to fit into any of the three new USA-centric docks. You may recognize the abilities and forms of at least a couple of these docks, but I assure you, they certainly were at the event today. The first of three, starting on the left in the video you’re about to see, is a car dock, this dock able to connect to the dash of your car so that you’re able to instantly and automatically engage the Samsung Galaxy S II’s voice command system.

Second there’s what appears very much to be a dock of some sort, but is instead a simple battery charger. This battery charger, contrary to what I say in the video (I was corrected later on by the same kind fellow who was unsure of the fact following,) you’ll be purchasing this battery charger with an extra battery included. What you can do, therefor, is always have a battery charging while you’re out using the other battery up. Captain Planet would have a fit!

Then there’s the speaker dock. This dock will do two things: one, should you plug the tail end of it’s microUSB port in with a microUSB cord, it’ll charge your device. Two, the hole in the back (again, contrary to what I say in the video) is a simple 3.5mm speaker cord jack. You can therefor plug it in to something like a SuperTooth Disco speaker and let’er wail.

Look like a good triad to you? Have a look back at Chris Davies’ original review of the international edition’s accessories collection and see how they compare. Look quite similar, wouldn’t you say?

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II 4G and Accessory Dock Hands-on

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

T-Mobile was also at the Galaxy S II party today, they didn’t wanna miss out on the dual-core fun and they had their own beautiful phone to show the world. I personally like the T-Mobile SGSII the most with the slightly rounded edges, it just has a great design in my opinion. It was announced by T-Mobile right as the event was starting to day in NYC and you can read all about that here.

For now we haven’t heard any carrier branding other than the Epic 4G Touch. T-Mobile and AT&T both just called it the Galaxy S II in press releases so we aren’t sure if they will have specific names or not at this point. I sort of liked the T-Mobile Samsung Hercules but that may still be coming so we wont worry too much about that. For now here are the specs of the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II 4G.

– 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus Display
– 1.2GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos processor
– Ultra-thin design
– HSPA+ 4G Connectivity
– 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras
– 1080p HD video recording
– Wifi calling
– NOVA 2 HD pre-loaded
– Swype pre-loaded
- Netflix pre-loaded
– Bluetooth 3.0
– Hotspot controls up to eight devices
– Android 2.3 Gingerbread
– Optional USB Host kit for connection keyboards, cameras, printers and thumb drives
– Optional HDMI adapter
– Multimedia and Car docks will be available soon

Sadly T-Mobile was playing it safe today and didn’t reveal actual size and weight specs like the other carriers, or offer any sort of release date. It’s safe to say T-Mobile will most likely be the last to launch their SGSII but hopefully they have a good reason for it. We do see Netflix was pre-installed and neatly showing on the main screen of icons but other then that T-Mobile had their version under a pretty and square glass box and we weren’t able to get more pictures. Most likely it will perform just as amazing as its brothers so that shouldn’t be much of a concern for any potential buyers.

We did however get some hands-OFF video and will post that up as soon as it’s ready for your viewing pleasure. Samsung also announced a desktop dock and some accessories for all of the SGSII’s we’ve mentioned today. We will have video of that in a moment too but for now check out all the pictures of the dock, event, and the T-Mobile SGSII below in the gallery.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Hands-on

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 05:49 PM PDT

AT&T also has their own Galaxy S II to show off today and we were able to snatch a few photos and a quick video before they threw it back under the glass. I’ve wrote Galaxy S II so much today I think I’ll just say SGSII from here on out. So, AT&T will be launching the SGSII come September 18th and be just a few days behind the others, but don’t worry it will be yours with a new 2-year contract for only $199.

Just like the rest of the carrier today, AT&T announced the Galaxy S II and you can read all about that here. Since AT&T already offers the Samsung Infuse 4G with a large 4.5″ display they must have decided against that large size for the SGSII because they are the only carrier in the US offering it with a 4.3″ display rather than the 4.52″ that was announced today. Either way here are the official specs.

– 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus Display
– 1.2GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos processor
– Ultra-thin (8.89mm) and thinner than on other carriers
– 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras
– 1080p HD video recording
– Wifi calling
– NOVA 2 HD pre-loaded
– Swype pre-loaded
– Bluetooth 3.0
– Hotspot controls up to eight devices
– Android 2.3 Gingerbread
– Optional USB Host kit for connection keyboards, cameras, printers and thumb drives
– Optional HDMI adapter
– Multimedia and Car docks will be available soon

Now for our hands-on we actually brought along the little/big brother the Samsung Infuse 4G. While it has a 4.5″ display it only offers a single-core CPU so that is clearly where the SGSII has the advantage as it’s 1.2 Ghz and has an extra core for when you need it most. The smaller of the two pictured below is the new Samsung Galaxy S II headed for AT&T come September 18th.

AT&T Galaxy S II Hands-on Video

Again performance was excellent and no one will really have any issues there. Everything was extremely fluid and performed great and we experienced little to no lag at all. Touch Wiz was fast and stable too. The AT&T Model looks closest to the version launched in Europe because it features the same size display and you will all be just as pleased with it as those Europeans are. We plan on fully reviewing the phone come launch time but for now here are some pictures for you to enjoy.

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Hands-On

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 05:29 PM PDT

In case anyone missed it, today was Samsung day and they’ve officially announced the Samsung Galaxy S II Smartphone is headed to all three major US carriers with the exception of Verizon (they have bigger plans so I’m told). We were live at the NYC Samsung event getting all the juicy details. For the official announcement of the Epic 4G Touch click here. The WiMAX version will be available starting September 16th for the low price of just $199. We have pictures and videos below.

After Samsung leaked the details earlier this morning we can now officially confirm those details were all accurate. The Galaxy S II offered by the Now Network will be the Epic 4G Touch and will come with some awesome specs and those include:

– 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus Display
– 1.2GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos processor
– Ultra-thin (9.59mm) design
– Wimax 4G Connectivity
– 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras
– 1080p HD video recording
– Wifi calling
– NOVA 2 HD pre-loaded
– Swype pre-loaded
– Bluetooth 3.0
– Hotspot controls up to eight devices
– Android 2.3 Gingerbread
– Optional USB Host kit for connection keyboards, cameras, printers and thumb drives
– Optional HDMI adapter
– Multimedia and Car docks will be available soon

Pretty impressive right? Basically it is everything that made the original SGSII popular but with a bigger screen, I love it. Obviously with the 1.2 Ghz dual-core CPU performance was top notch and everything was extremely quick, speedy, and very fluid. We experienced zero issues or lag with our very limited time with the phone. You all know plenty about the SGSII so I’ll just skip down to the pictures. Video is coming shortly.

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Coming September 16th for $199

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 04:02 PM PDT

Samsung and the Now Network have also confirmed that they will also be launching the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (long name I know) with 4G WiMAX coming this September. Prior to the event in NYC going on as we speak Samsung accidentally unveiled the details on the SGSIIE4GT — yes that is what I’m calling it.

The Galaxy S II with 4G WiMAX will be available from the team in Yellow first, they get exclusive rights as the first Galaxy S II to the US. Availability starting on September 16th for $199 with a new 2-year contract. The full details of the SGSII Epic 4G Touch can be seen here and just like everything else announced today it will be rocking that awesome 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2 Ghz dual-core Samsung Exnyos processor, 16GB internal storage with 1GB Ram. a Powerful 8 MP rear camera with LED flash capable of 1080p video capture, 2MP front facing camera and more.

Galaxy S II Unveiling Video

As expected these will all be running on the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well as an updated Samsung Touch Wiz UX. The video above is the quick unveiling live from the NYC event just for fun, call it a bonus. Samsung will also offer an HDTV adapter and dock for those looking to get HD content from the phone to their HDTV’s and should have those available soon. We are also hearing since they are the first carrier they’ll also be offering pre-orders so stay tuned for full details.

We are just getting some hands-on time now and will be sure to update with plenty of pictures and videos shortly, but you already knew that right?

Samsung Galaxy S II Official for AT&T with 4.3″ AMOLED Display Coming in September

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:38 PM PDT

The details just coming in over the past few minutes but just as we guessed Samsung has announced the Galaxy S II for all three major carriers in the US with the exception for Verizon. We have some press photos for everyone to enjoy and as soon as we get some hands-on time with the real devices we will be sure to update. Sadly the AT&T version will be coming to market with the same 4.3″ display we’ve seen on current models.

Again we are here live in NYC and will update as details come in. It appears AT&T and T-Mobile have both decided to leave the name untouched and are calling it just the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II. I like that better than the Attain, or Function or whatever else we’ve heard. AT&T's version of the S II features an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with flash and 1080p video capture, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and the latest generation of TouchWiz atop Android 2.3. but they did opt for the smaller 4.3″ display vs the 4.52″ we’ve seen leaked recently.

Galaxy S II Unveiling Video

Like we already knew it will be coming to market with the Samsung dual-core 1.2 Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM. With the smaller screen AT&T is also claiming they have the thinnest model so that is a plus. The Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T will be available September 18th. Stay tuned for more details and hands on video coming very shortly

Samsung Galaxy S II Gets Official on T-Mobile this Fall

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:19 PM PDT

The long wait is finally over and today at the event in NYC Samsung is just about set to start announcing what we have all been waiting for. The Samsung Galaxy S II here in the US. T-Mobile has quickly jumped out and has just pinged us to inform everyone and our readers that they will be carrying the Galaxy S II. We aren’t sure if this is the rumored Hercules or not but either way it’s good news.

The Galaxy S II event in NYC is just getting started and we have exciting news coming out already. We are expecting to hear about all three major carriers except for Verizon today, but we will report it as we hear it as we are LIVE in NYC. T-Mobile will be launching the Galaxy S II shown above coming this fall and just as we have heard from numerous rumors T-Mobile confirmed it will sport an upgraded 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus display rather than the 4.3″ on most SGSII’s. It will also feature the same 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8 MP rear camera with full 1080p video and a 2MP front camera for amazing quality video chat. Comes with 16GB internal storage and will run on T-Mobile 4G speeds.

These same details were also leaked earlier by Samsung for the WiMAX version of the Galaxy S II headed to the now network and you can see that here. As soon as Samsung gets rolling and some phones are in the wild we will be sure to update with plenty of pictures and hands-on video so don’t forget to check back shortly. Again we are live at the NYC Samsung Galaxy S II event and will be bringing all the details shortly.

Samsung Confirms Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 12:12 PM PDT

Well guys it appears this is a bit more official after this. Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy S II with 4G WiMAX and it will be called the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch on their online training site. I must say that is a HUGE name for a smartphone and it really is just way too long. I’ll be calling it the SGSIIE4GT for short, if you call that short.

We have heard rumors of an upgraded version of the Galaxy S II more than a few times, and expect to see it at IFA here shortly since we will be there live. These new images confirm a few of the recent rumors just as we reported yesterday that the US models would be coming to market with large 4.5″ displays rather than 4.3″ like the current Galaxy S II. Looking at the image above we can now confirm they will in fact have a 4.52″ AMOLED display but resolution is still unknown.

We have also heard of upgraded processors sporting a 1.4 or 1.5 Ghz speed but clearly stated the WiMAX version leaked above will be powered by the same 1.2 Ghz dual-core as previous models. Maybe that 1.5 Ghz speed bump is being saved for the Samsung Nexus Prime. Today in just a few short hours is the Samsung Galaxy S II U.S. Launch event in NYC and we have one of our own there to get all the details live so stay tuned as everything else unwraps today.
