T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G finally gets official Gingerbread

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 11:36 AM PST

Today T-Mobile has alerted us that the old and dated original Galaxy S 4G is finally set to receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The phone is still awesome, don’t get me wrong but it is slowly getting older and this update is coming a bit late. Good news for owners though i suppose. The wait for an official version of Gingerbread is finally over although you wont be getting it over the air like most updates.

Instead of coming over the air and popping up on your phone it is OTW (over the wire) and will require a computer. Just like anything from Samsung you’ll need to use Kies to complete the update but don’t worry it’s actually quite simple. You just need a PC, a USB cable and that phone you are still rocking needs to be present. T-Mobile has nicely included plenty of instructions and they are available by clicking here.

Aside from the usual performance and visual improvements you’ll receive with Android 2.3 Gingerbread the update should also bring some Google security patches, enhancements to the camera, better Wi-Fi support and connectivity as well as fix a few issues with T-Mobile’s HSPA+ on the Galaxy S 4G. I wonder how that GPS lock will be on this update — just saying. Either way I’m sure a few are glad to be seeing this update finally available and maybe, just maybe you can use that front facing camera with Google Talk now.

Verizon 4G LTE goes live in 14 new markets tomorrow

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 11:07 AM PST

If you are one of the many still waiting for Verizon 4G LTE to get flipped on in your area then tomorrow might be your lucky day. Verizon announced 20 new markets last month and 14 coming in November. Tomorrow, November 17th Verizon 4G LTE will be live for another huge list of subscribers, hopefully you’re all one of them.

This is more a PSA than anything because I’m sure not everyone is keeping close tabs on the market updates like we all are here at Android Community. Not only are 14 new locations getting the upgrade but an additional 4 are expanding for better and faster coverage as well. Big Red is wasting no time with the rollout and continues to be the biggest and fastest 4G carrier. Here’s the list of new markets starting tomorrow:

–Little Rock, AR
–Savannah, GA
–Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA
–Lexington, KY
–Starkville, MS
–Kansas City and Springfield/Branson, MO
–Lincoln, NE
–Orange County, NY
–Greater Providence, RI
–Rapid City, SD
–Roanoke, VA
–Appleton and Oshkosh, WI

Expansions:

–Louisville, KY
–Grand Rapids, MI
–Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
–Pittsburgh, PA

Last month Verizon exceeded their 4G rollout goal of 185 million by years end and now they are quickly approaching and will pass 200 million for 2011. That is a strong statement and something AT&T and T-Mobile can’t say. T-Mobile launched a few new 4G HSPA+ markets today, if that interests you and claim to cover 180 million American’s with their coverage too.

Who you decide will power your calls and supply you with data for all those Android apps is up to you, I just thought we’d share the news.

Samsung DoubleTime hands-on and unboxing [Video]

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:11 AM PST

AT&T’s latest entry in the entry-level smartphone game is the Samsung DoubleTime, an Android handset with a form factor you’ve probably seen a lot more often on feature phones. In fact, this particular type of phone used to be known as a “messaging phone” with a flip-out keyboard designed for fast and easy texting, emailing and the like. The DoubleTime is aimed squarely at first-time smartphone buys with a $49.99 price and specs to match – let’s take a look.

The phone has an unusual dual-screen design, with both the inner and outer screens stretching just 3.2 inches in diameter with a 480 x 320 resolution each. The top half of the phone pops up laptop style, disabling the portrait outer screen and activating the landscape inner – like any standard slider, with a little extra engineering.

The case itself is a little chunky, but considering that there’s two screens and a surprisingly large QWERTY keyboard, I’m inclined to be forgiving. Build quality is surprisingly good for such a small and cheap phone – the hinge in particular is pleasantly firm.  The keys themselves are a little short, but big and spacious enough for some rapid texting.

As far as internals go, a 600mhz Qualcomm processor will have to do, along with just 260MB of on-board storage. A 2GB MicroSD card is included, and a good thing, too, or downloaded apps would have to start getting very comfortable with each other. The single 3.2 megapixel camera may not be much, but it’ll do for some quick social network shots. There’s no mention of 4G here, not even AT&T’s HSPA+ version – this is a standard 3G phone with neither a bell nor whistle to be found.

Now for the bad part, the software. Samsung has seen fit to include Android 2.2 Froyo with the DoubleTime, almost an entire year after Gingerbread became available. I wouldn’t hold my breath for an update of any kind. On the plus side, TouchWiz seems to be doing alright even on the pokey hardware, and a lack of internal space means no annoying trail games cluttering up your application tray.

After about an hour with the device, it’s clear that the Samsung DoubleTime isn’t so much a smartphone as it is a featurephone that just happens to run Android. At this point, it’s probably a lot easier to quickly port Android to some low-end hardware than it is to actually customize a dumbphone OS. For $50, you’re not getting much, but then the kind of customer who would want this phone won’t ask for much either – and what they’ll get is a true mobile OS with access to the Android Market. The fact that the hardware will be left in the dust by almost every phone out there is just a side note.

The DoubleTime will be available on November 20th, along with the Samsung Captivate Glide.

Take a look at our hands-on unboxing video below:

T-Mobile upgrades HSPA+ 4G in 11 more cities

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:08 AM PST

Despite sticking with the older HSPA+ standard with no LTE plans in sight, T-Mobile continues to upgrade its existing network with commendable regularity. Today the carrier announced that 11 new cities will be getting the doubled speed standard that others have been enjoying for some time: Bend, Medford and Corvallis, Oregon, Benton Harbor, Michigan, Bloomington, Champaign–Urbana and Springfield, Illinois, Columbus, Georgia, Hagerstown, Maryland, Montgomery, Alabama and Yuba City, California.

The above cities will now enjoy HSPA+ with a maximum theoretical speed of 42Mbps down. That’s not to be sneezed at, since even on AT&T’s uncontested and relatively tiny LTE network, we could barely get above 20Mbps. T-Mobile says their network now covers 180 million Americans (which I’m sure is a wonderful comfort to the 120 million+ Americans who can’t get a single ever-loving bar). Notably for data-lovers, T-Mobile still offers unlimited data plans for smartphones, though customers are throttled after a certain limit.

T-Mobile has been particularly aggressive in expanding its 4G android lineup, currently lead by HTC’s Amaze 4G and the still solid Samsung Galaxy S II. T-Mobile’s tablet offerings are expanding as well: in addition to the Huawei-made Springboard, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is coming soon, both of which have HSPA+ 4G. After the Justice department denied AT&T’s approval to purchase its competitor, the future of T-Mobile is currently somewhat tenuous, but for the foreseeable future it remains an economical choice for those who spend most of their time in urban areas.

Acer Iconia Tab A700 leaks with HD 1920 x 1200 resolution and Tegra 3

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:07 AM PST

While many manufacturers are most likely rushing to get a Tegra 3 quad-core tablet to market Acer appears to be taking that a step further going all out with a full HD 1920 x 1200 resolution Tegra 3 Android tablet. The same source code that tipped the new Iconia A510 and 511 have now let us into the world of the Iconia Tab A700 and A701.

Shown in the source code image above I’ve nicely highlighted those ever so important bits of information. The name being the Acer A701, the Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and then for resolution we see that eye blistering 1920 x 1200 full HD listed. No details regarding the size of this tablet were mentioned but most likely it would be some sort of 10″ screen size, anything else would just be counter productive and too large for most.

We recently spotted the new Acer Iconia Tab A200 at the FCC being listed as under 8mm thin, making it one of the thinner tablets that could hit the market this holiday season. If things are the same for the A700 we could be seeing one powerful and thin tablet with an amazingly crisp screen resolution to boot. The A700 will be Wi-Fi only and the A701 should sport some sort of 3G/4G connectivity but we don’t have many details at the moment.

Nothing implied what OS we will have but hopefully it will be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but 3.2 Honeycomb is still a possibility while everyone tweaks the code and gets things up and running. We can expect the usual array of ports and options with this latest Acer leak but for now we’ll just sit back and wait for more details to surface.

HTC gets cease and desist for Vivid smartphone from porn firm

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 07:48 AM PST

Earlier this month we got hands on with our review of the HTC Vivid smartphone. We thought the device was nice with good build quality, but it had a sub-par battery that left some to be desired. If you like that smartphone you might want to get one now. Apparently, HTC has received a cease and desist order from a porn company called Vivid Entertainment.

Apparently, the porn firm thinks that the HTC smartphone will cause brand confusion. Seriously? Brand confusion between a smartphone and porn empire? Vivid Entertainment has demanded that HTC change the name of the smartphone or risk being sued. HTC says that it is reviewing the claim and won’t make comment until it is finished.

I think that Vivid Entertainment is going to have a very hard time making this argument stick in court. I would imagine that the porn firm is simply looking for some press. The phone is on the AT&T network so AT&T may ultimately get into the issue as well.

Harness Android Open Accessory Protocol with Electric Sheep

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 07:32 AM PST

If you are the sort that likes to tinker and come up with your own accessories and apps for your Android device electric Sheep will tickle your fancy. Electric Sheep comes from a company called SparkFun and can hook to your Android device using a USB port. The little Electric Sheep board takes advantage of Android’s Open Accessory Protocol.

The board will give the user access to the phone systems for developing accessories and apps for different uses. The board also allows interaction with a microcontroller like Arduino. The Electric Sheep board will work with any Android device, not just smartphones. It has a USB header onboard for direct connectivity.

The board uses an ATMega1560 microcontroller and bootloader. The USB-host connector allows for easy connection to the Android device using a USB port. Electric Sheep is compatible with Arduino IDEA and HandBag. It is also Arduino-shield compatible. The Electric Sheep board is priced at $79.95 per unit.

Qualcomm announces its own Snapdragon game store

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 07:02 AM PST

As Android’s gaming prowess (or at lest the hardware it requires) becomes more and more evident, Qualcomm has decided they want to highlight the potential of their Snapdragon series of mobile processors. To that end, they’ve announced Snapdragon GamesCommand, a showcase app filled with “console-quality” and casual games exclusively for Snapdragon devices. Like Nvidia’s Tegra Zone, at least some of the games in GamesCommand will not appear anywhere else – those with other hardware are out of luck.

The company is also revamping their Snapdragon GamePack, adding three games to the mix: The Ball, Fight Game Heroes and GALAGA Special edition, all expected by early 2012. These high-profile titles join more than 100 games already available in the GamePack, and will be the first of a new crop designed to shop off the graphical prowess of the latest generation of Snapdragon processors. Qualcomm did not give exact dates on availability of the expanded GamePack or GamesCommand.

The latest hardware-contingent game store is an interesting divergence from the idea that the Android Market is the best place to showcase Android software. The hardware split might remind you of ATI/AMD and Nvidia duking it out over desktop graphics cards, but in truth, it’s a lot more like the console gaming market. In order to get access to all the latest high-end games, Android users may have to purchase multiple high-end devices, or more likely, simply go without. The precedent is a disturbing one – I’d much rather have developers create games that can run across different types of hardware. It looks like your next tablet purchase might be a tricky one, since you’ll have to consider not just how fast it will run software, but which software it will run.

Sharp’s 7-inch Android tablet breaks cover

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 04:38 AM PST

Back in mid-September, we got word that the Sharp Galapagos 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch tablets had been killed off. These tablets never sold very well. Sharp hoped at the time that its 7-inch Galapagos tablet would be better received by the Android tablet buyers out there. I have my doubts about that, but the Sharp Galapagos 7-inch tablet has now been seen in the flesh.

The tablet has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 screen and packs in a Tegra 2 processor with dual cores. The device has 1GB of memory and it has 8GB of internal storage. A microSD card slot handles more storage if you run out. Other features include WiFi, Bluetooth, and WiMax connectivity. That WiMax connection allows the tablet to get onto the speedy network wherever it goes.

It also features a hot spot function that will allow the connectivity to be shared with up to seven other devices. The battery inside the tablet is rated for six hours of video playback and about 7.5 hours of still image perusing. Sharp also integrates HDMI output for shooting content to a TV. Pricing is unknown and a lot of the success will depend on the cost. The tablet will apparently hit Japan first on September 12, almost exactly a year after the other two tablets were axed.

Google may tests out cable TV service in Kansas City

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 05:43 PM PST

Google’s no stranger to disruptive technology, but so far, Google TV has failed to make a dent in the set-top box market. Google may be aiming to change that with a new approach: don’t replace the cable box, replace the cable company. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the search giant is investigating the possibility of bringing cable TV services to customers of its upcoming fiber service in Kansas City, Missouri, bringing both super-fast Internet and Google-branded TV to its lucky residents.

You’ll remember that Kansas City was selected as the recipient of Google Fiber, an experimental fiber network that will deliver blazing broadband speeds at a fraction of the cost of current providers. Very little has been heard about the service since Kansas City was announced as the recipient. Cable services, either via an IPTV system or traditional methods, would not be beyond Google’s reach. And with Kansas City already serving as a testing area for Google-branded services, rolling out cable TV would be a very easy addition.

Part of the reason for this could be Google’s frustration over the Google TV platform. Just last week Logitech announced plans to abandon its Revue device after staggering profit losses, and there are still a large amount of cable providers that will not support Google TV. Perhaps Google is tired of trying to change things from the bottom and is hoping to compete directly with cable and satellite providers, many of which also provide “high speed” Internet. With YouTube adding movie rentals and original content, a delivery system than consumers are already comfortable with would seem like a nice fit.

A Google representative would not comment on television plans when contacted. Google’s fiber service is set to go live in Kansas City next year. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the possibility of a new kind of Google TV.

Ice Cream Sandwich’s Easter egg: Nyan Cat Android

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 05:11 PM PST

Every new version of Android gets its own special Ester egg, activated by rapidly tapping on the version number in the About Phone section of the settings menu. Gingerbread got some Android zombie art. Honeycomb got the bumblebee Android. And Ice Cream Sandwich gets… a pop-tart robot?

OK, explaining this one requires a little bit of Internet meme history. The “Nyan Cat” meme started when a sprite drawing of a cat-Pop Tart from a site called LOL-Comics was posted to YouTube, with an accompaniment of sickeningly addictive J-pop singing “NyanNyanNyan”, the Japanese equivalent of “meow meow meow.” The meme exploded back in April, and you’re welcome to check out the video here. You’ve been warned.

Someone at Google is a fan, because they’ve replicated the original in Ice Cream Sandwich. You can see it running on the Galaxy Nexus, courtesy of YouTube user shnsk100:

Naturally the cat has been replaced with the signature green Android, and the pop-tart is now – what else? – an Ice Cream Sandwich. Once again, Google engineers have a little fun in the bowels of Android’s source code. Here’s hoping that it won’t be too long before you can check out the animation on your smartphone, or pick up a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon… eventually.

Check out our hands-on looks at Ice Cream Sandwich below:

What does Dolphin Browser do when it passes 10 million users? Go to Disney World

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 04:18 PM PST

Exciting news for indie mobile browser Dolphin: they’ve just passed the 10 million user mark. Dolphin Browser was one of the first alternative browsers available, and has remained popular even in the face of competition from big guys like Firefox and Opera. To celebrate, they’re sending one lucky Dolphin fan on a free 5-day trip to Disney World, where they’ll naturally be staying at the  Dolphin resort. To enter, you need to download Dolphin and fire off a quick tweet. You can find the contest details on Dolphin’s blog.

To be fair, the 10 million statistic includes combined downloads from the various Android versions and iOS. But considering that Dolphin Browser HD alone has somewhere between 5 and 10 million downloads in the Android Market, I think it’s safe to say that Android is contributing the most to the impressive figure. Dolphin got in a bit of trouble last month after a security hole was found by an XDA-Developers member, but thanks to a quick response, they haven’t lost much face.

Most Android users simply stick with the rather limited built-in browser, but those in the know (that’s you, Android Community reader) realize that there’s a lot more powerful options. Dolphin remains one of the best alternatives out there, and it’s constantly adding new features like bookmark sync and an easy reader mode. Congrats to developer Mobotap – now pardon me, I have to go find my mouse ears.

HTC Zeta superphone leaked with insane 2.5GHz processor

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 03:38 PM PST

HTC has been leaking like a sieve for the last few weeks. The latest goodie to get out of Taiwan is the HTC Zeta, a rumored Ice Cream Sandwich phone with a 2.5 gigahertz Snapdragon processor. Other specs include Ice Cream Sandwich, a full gig of RAM and 4.5-inch 720p display. Naturally, there’s no availability, pricing or verification in sight.

This one goes squarely in the “rumor” category. To round out that unbelievable processor you get 32GB of built-in storage, Sense UI, Beats (see the logo on the bottom) and a 1,830mAh battery. The strangely exposed 8MP battery on the back is twinned to a forward-facing cam with 1.3Mp. For something with a 4.5-inch screen the device is a little chunky at 9.8mm, so I’ll go ahead and add fuel to the fire by guessing that it has LTE as well. Remember that capacitive buttons don’t automatically mean that the device isn’t running Ice Cream Sandwich.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this one probably isn’t real. The sharp edges are a pretty radical design departure for HTC, and there’s a good reason that most devices designed to go in your pocket don’t have sharp corners. That crazy 2.5Ghz processor is suspect too; a Snapdragon of that caliber will be available soon, but why upstage your entire product line, including the upcoming Edge, so soon? I’m guessing this is a commendable but fake fan render. Still, I could certainly be wrong, and if I am, expect to see the Zeta or something like it at Mobile World Congress in February.

Motorola DROID Bionic software update “project” looking for testers

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 03:29 PM PST

Motorola is working hard on that update for the DROID Bionic we told you about earlier this month. They confirmed that the Bionic had a pretty large list of issues and promised an update within the next 30-60 days. So basically from November 1st to the end of the year. I have good news, it appears they are ready to let a few users test the update so hopefully things are going well.

Motorola doesn’t appear to be using the term “soak test” anymore as those were rolling out to users, now it seems they are doing early beta builds for the Motorola Feedback Network members only and calling them “projects”. Not a bad idea given the many update failures they’ve had recently. Basically this means they have an update for the device that needs a bit of testing first. Hopefully it fixes most of the many bugs from this acknowledged bug list.

This is the email being sent to users:

Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are preparing a project for owners of the Motorola Droid Bionic on Verizon, and would like to invite you to participate. Click to take a short enrollment survey for this project. Please note that you must be a member in good standing of the Motorola Owners' Forums to take part.

If you are no longer using your Droid Bionic and wish to update your Motorola Feedback Network profile so you can be part of projects for a different Motorola phone, please . If you use the same computer as previous registrations, you can update your profile. If you do not, simply re-register with your current Motorola product. To opt out of the MFN see the link at the bottom of this email.

This is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites.

Thanks — we hope to be in contact with you soon.

So far Motorola looks to be on track for that original 30-60 day update time frame that was originally set. Its only been 15 days and they are already looking for testers. Hopefully it will get all squared away and approved before the end of the year and we see an official OTA update in early December. Obviously this is not Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this early, but we’ve also been told that is on the way too. If updates aren’t your thing then keep your eyes on the Bionic CM7 development.

If you are a part of the “project” for the Bionic feel free to send us a few details in the comments, or hit that TIP US button at the top of the page.

Eager dev gets Ice Cream Sandwich up and running on PandaBoard

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 02:51 PM PST

We knew the minute that the Ice Cream Sandwich source code was released, thousands of Android devs were hard at work on ROMs, ports and other projects. It looks like YouTube user pfefferzlinaro gets to claim “first” on an ICS dev build: he’s released a video of Ice Cream Sandwich running from source on a PandaBoard, output to a monitor or small television. The build is extremely early and far from functional but it is, well, first.

A PandaBoard is an ARM system-on-a-chip computer that shares a lot of hardware components with common Android phones and tablets. It’s designed to be a developer test tool – essentially, it allows devs to test their Linux or Android apps (or in this case, operating systems) before moving on to more varied hardware. The developer in question has put together a quick and dirty version of Ice Cream Sandwich just to prove that is can be done. There’s still some interesting things to be seen here, mostly in that the horizontal resolution gives us the first good look at what ICS will be like on a tablet.

Check out the video for yourself below:

You can expect more useful versions of ICS to start appearing within the next few days and weeks. It’s a good bet that the Nexus S and Nexus One will see some very quick ports, with other popular devices to follow. That said, it’ll be a few weeks before any of these ports start approaching the level of daily drivers, so keep a Nandroid backup handy if you’re the tinkering type.

Check out our hands-on looks at Ice Cream Sandwich below:

ASUS Transformer Prime camera samples show off stunning images

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 01:13 PM PST

Not everyone walks around with a huge DSLR camera on their neck, or even a decent point and shoot for that matter. Today we’ll be showing you a few amazing samples from the upcoming ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime quad-core tablet’s camera. Obviously no one walks around 24/7 with a tablet either but if the opportunity presents itself, the Prime can take some mighty impressive photos with that 8 megapixel f2.4 aperture camera lens.

We all know plenty about the Transformer Prime but just in case here’s the impressive details. It was announced last week being powered by the brand new superchip that we call the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and will pounce the competition into the ground. Not only is it the thinnest and lightest tablet yet, but it will also be the most powerful hands down. Along with the impressive specs ASUS also has included the best camera optics of any tablet (or smartphone) and the Prime’s 8 megapixel camera should be one, if not the best available.

Above are a few details regarding the camera we’ll get with the Prime. The faster and impressive f2.4 aperture will ensure you capture some amazing photos with this thing. Most devices like the myTouch 4G Slide has impressive cameras but are still at f2.8 so this gives the Prime even more of an advantage. There isn’t much else to say regarding this so I’ll just let you enjoy the highly impressive image samples in the gallery below.

What do you think? If the quad-core wasn’t enough to have your credit card waiting and ready, is the camera?

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 12:50 PM PST

Google is on track again this week updating a few of their popular applications for the world of Android. Updating Google Maps last week and today the Google Voice app has just received its latest update in the Android Market. Google has brought a few much needed and requested features. A big one is being able to send to multiple recipients.

Updated to version 0.4.2.38 this afternoon you can now prefetch your voicemail. Meaning they can be listened to even when there is no data coverage or you are in a spotty area. Among a few other new enhancements they’ve added a feature that GVoice has been missing for a long time — the option to send messages to multiple recipients. With today’s update you can now easily and simply send messages to everyone you need at the same time whether its co-workers, family, or whoever. Here are the three main new improvements:

-Prefetch voicemails so they can be listened to even when there is no data coverage
-Allow sending text messages to multiple recipients
-Improved text message notification

If you’ve been considering taking the dive into Google Voice now would be a good time. You get a new number you can use for whatever you’d like and it can send or receive calls and messages for much cheaper than your current plan probably offers. I’m pretty excited to give this multiple messages upgrade a try as I’m sure all of you are. Head down to the Android Market via the link below to get the latest and greatest from Google.

T-Mobile “Magenta Saturday Sale” aims to beat Black Friday, All phones under $49

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 12:33 PM PST

Go T-Mobile! Just announced today T-Mobile will help holiday shoppers escape the dark lines of Black Friday and scrambling crazy people by holding their own sale a bit earlier than you’d expect. Saturday, November 19th will be dubbed “Magenta Saturday” where T-Mob’s will be offering all smartphones and many tablets for just $49 or less — but as usual there are a few catches.

This deal is for one day one, Saturday, and customers will be able to purchase any smartphone and a few tablets like the G-Slate for just $49 as a down payment. However, the devices must be purchased along with one of T-Mobiles unlimited value plans (with 2-year agreement) and the user will actually pay the full down payment — for most phones this is $199 or less, then receive a mail in rebate bringing the total down to $49.99 or less. Many devices will become free but all customers will be paying something out of pocket. While the deal isn’t as great as it sounds you can still get a few amazing phones on the cheap.

Some of the devices we can expect for these awesome prices in the world of Android include the brand new HTC Amaze 4G, Galaxy S II, Samsung Exhibit II and the myTouch Q, then a few slates like the G-Slate and Dell Streak 7. The list above should clear up any device availability and pricing for those interested. As always there are probably a few additional details you should probably check into first so we suggest you call your T-Mobile rep and get all the details. Or just head to a store Saturday and enjoy the holiday sale. More information is also available at the source link below.

Toshiba Thrive Android 3.2 Honeycomb update on the way

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 11:54 AM PST

We’ve just been given word that the Toshiba Thrive tablet’s update to Android 3.2 Honeycomb is currently en route and should be hitting devices as we speak. It was promised to arrive back in October but sadly that never happened. Better late than never right? The OTA update brings the Thrive to build version 3.2.1.31.5.0002 and should be available now.

The last update for the Thrive was way back in August and was for a few bug fixes and the sleepy bug. Today’s however will bring you all to Android 3.2 Honeycomb and has plenty of new changes. We should all know what to expect with 3.2 as it brought plenty of stability and performance improvements to Honeycomb. Now we can just be hopeful that the chunky Thrive will see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Along with the usual improvements with 3.2 Honeycomb Toshiba mentions specifically a few stability and performance enhancements with the LPDDR2 RAM in the Tegra 2 and their device. Screen rotation acceleration has been improved and is more fluid, and they’ve added a few specific fixes to help older applications display properly on the 10″ display. If you are a rooted user you might want to hold off as this very well could break the root method currently being used. At least the update isn’t breaking Wi-Fi like those Galaxy Tab 10.1 users are experiencing lately. Feel free to update and enjoy the latest and greatest in terms of Honeycomb. As usual you can manually check for updates in settings rather then waiting for the OTA.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Verizon 4G LTE finally clears the FCC

Posted: 15 Nov 2011 11:29 AM PST

Whoa, it’s about time guys. We can now officially check “clear the FCC” off the list for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus sporting 4G LTE. The Galaxy Nexus sporting those Verizon 4G LTE bands has finally landed and received approval from the FCC. Could this be what the wait, silence, and possible delays have been for?

Maybe now Verizon will rush to the streets and announce some sort of launch date. I’m still hopeful for a November release, but we’ll see. We’ve seen rumors regarding the Verizon version launching on the 17th, the 21st, or lately even sometime in December as everyone slowly has lost hope with Verizon and Samsung both being silent. Maybe you should just go out and buy the new DROID RAZR instead (just a thought).

We’ve recently seen training material for the GNex at Verizon so it appears things are ready to go. Maybe this was the last step and now they’ll announce something, either way we should know soon enough. We’ve seen announcements from O2, Bell, Rogers and more and I know many are dying for some news from Verizon. I have a feeling it will be coming any time now, so stay tuned and keep patient. I might have to ship one over from Europe if they don’t hurry it up over at big red. Get ready for some ICS guys because it’s coming!
