Swype opens the freezer, Ice Cream Sandwich support coming end-of-month

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:52 AM PST

Good news folks, for everyone that loves to swype rather than type it appears that Swype might finally be ready to start beta testing and bring an official version to market supporting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus. After being unsupported since release date today they’ve clarified when we can expect to see an update.

Although modders have already tweaked Swype to work near-perfect on the Galaxy Nexus it seems that they aren’t having as easy of a time doing the same over at HQ. They’ve updated their official Twitter page with details stating that final tweaks are in progress and testing should be done soon.

The developer and modding community were able to get it up and working rather shortly but Swype will make sure everything is as official and awesome as ever. They wont release a beta until it performs to the Swype standard. While we are still in early January according to that above tweet we’ll be seeing a beta release come “end-of-month”. With an official automatic update to soon follow most likely.

I’m hoping we get some sort of beta build before the end of January but that is looking doubtful. In the meantime users can try their luck over at XDA for a version that will work on the Galaxy Nexus while we wait for the real deal.

Boost Mobile offers cheap and eco-friendly Samsung Replenish

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:30 AM PST

Android phones come in shapes and sizes to suit just about everybody, including those who by want or need are restricted to non-contract carriers like Boost Mobile. If you’ve been swayed by their cheap plans and no-contract phones but discouraged by more expensive models, the newly added Samsung Replenish might be for you. The small QWERTY candybar phone is rated as “eco-friendly” thanks to its post-consumer recycled body, and it won’t break the bank at just $100 for a non-contract phone.

For that price you don’t get much, but for some it should be enough. the 2.8-inch portrait screen has a resolution of 240×320, sitting above a full QWERTY keyboard built into the face. At 123 by 60 by 11 millimeters, it’s small if not especially slim. 600Mhz and 512MB of RAM should be just enough to run Gingerbread (which was just recently released for the phone) with full access to Google apps and the Android Market. On-board storage is a puny half gigabyte, but you can supplement it with a MicroSD card.

The phone goes on sale January 16th at Boost Mobile’s retail locations and partners, as well as its online store. While it’s by no means a high-powered device, Samsung’s been putting out some solid entry-level Android phones lately, so this one’s worth considering if you want to save money or need a decent cell phone to give the kids. For the Earth-conscious out there, Boost reminds us that its trade-in program offers free electronics recycling with a new purchase.

Rumor: Google “Nexus” tablet is 7 inches, priced to fight Fire

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:06 AM PST

Google’s vocal chairman Eric Schmidt gave the Android world something to talk about last month, when he declared to an Italian newspaper that Google was preparing a tablet for the first half of 2012. His actual words were pretty vague; you could take the stance that he was foreshadowing a pure Google “Nexus” device, or that the “we” in question was just Google and a close hardware partner, as Motorola has been for the original DROID and the XOOM. Now DigiTimes reports that the device isn’t a 10-inch iPad fighter as suspected, but a smaller, cheaper device meant to compete directly with popular models like the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire.

Considering that the cheaper devices are where the vast majority of Android’s growth is coming from in the tablet market, it makes a certain kind of sense. And Google might even be trying to compete with Amazon, which is using Android on the Kindle Fire as an end-run around Google’s direct sales of apps, movies, music and books. Pricing an official “Google-branded” Ice Cream Sandwich tablet at $200 or less would be a great way to expose more consumers to the pure Android experience, and build up a loyal userbase by undercutting Apple. Rumors of a cheaper and/or smaller iPad 3 persist, with a 7-inch model considered a possibility. DigiTimes didn’t reveal its sources, but they proclaim that a March or April release is likely.

There’s a lot to be skeptical about here. First, Schmidt’s words do not confirm a Nexus tablet in any way – this could be just a bunch of wishful thinking by Android fans and investors. Second, Google has reached for the high end with its developer devices thus far: the DROID, Nexus One, Nexus S, XOOM and Galaxy Nexus were all at least as expensive as the other devices in their category, often more so.

That being said, hardware is a loss leader as far as Google is concerned. They want users more than anything, and with the tablet market exploding, they need to hit Apple fast and hard. We will be keeping an ear to the ground for any further rumors, hopefully with some more concrete information coming soon.

Toshiba Thrive 16GB hits bargain bin, $280 today only

The Toshiba Thrive 10″ Android Honeycomb tablet has been making the rounds over the past few weeks and hitting all of those deals sites but today we have an even better offering. The almost famous woot.com has the 10″ 16GB tablet on sale for an excellent price of just $279 and $5 shipping.

In case you didn’t know, the Thrive might not be the thinnest or remotely close to being the prettiest tablet around — but it does have a slew of ports and options making it a viable option for those heavy with multimedia and gaming. Here at Android Community we use its full array of USB and HDMI ports to stream games like Riptide GP and Shadowgun to our HDTV and then use the Logitech game controller for an even better gaming experience. Hands-on demonstrations can be seen in the timeline of links below.

The deal is for a refurbished model, but for $279 you’ll get a 10.1″ Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet with an NVIDIA dual-core Tegra 2 processor speeding along at 1.0 GHz, 1GB of RAM, a pair of cameras and like mentioned above — all the ports one would ever need. With WiFi and an SD slot you’ll never have to worry about running out of internal storage either. Check out our review linked to below and then hurry and make up your mind as this deal wont last for long. Woot deals are “daily” so it will only be available for a short time.

Motorola introduces MOTOLUXE and DEFY MINI for international markets

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:51 AM PST

If you’re not swayed by the various unlocked superphones flying around on GSM networks and want something decidedly mid-range, you might want to check out Motorola’s latest offerings. The 4-inch MOTOLUXE and 3.2-inch DEFY MINI will be making their way to China, Europe and Latin America in February, with prices to satisfy the most enthusiastic of penny-pinchers. Too bad they didn’t say what those prices are.

The MOTOLUXE it the more luxurious of the two models, with a 4-inch screen with Motorola’s favorite non-standard 854×480 resolution. The handset is admirrably but not shockingly thin at 9.8mm, with an edge-to-edge glass display and a notification light built in to the nifty strap loop underneath the standard capacitive navigation buttons. An 8 megapixel rear camera plus a front-facing cam are complimented by a 1400mAh battery, which Motorola rates at 6.5 hours. an 800Mhz CPU and 512MB of RAM should run Gingerbread well enough. 1GB of internal storage isn’t much, but you can augment it with a MicroSD card.

The diminutive DEFY MINI is built for those who want a tough phone in a small package. Gorilla Glass protects a 480 x 320 3.2-inch screen, set into a body 12.6mm thick. A 3MP rear camera is nothing to write home about, but it does have a front-facing camera (not always a given on phones this small) and a commendably large 1650mAh battery. Processor speed isn’t detailed, but 600-800Mhz is likely, and it’s paired to 512MB of RAM. Gingerbread is the flavor of the day as far as Android goes.

You can check out Motorola’s promotional videos for both phones below:

White Galaxy Nexus and 32GB model coming to the UK soon

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:20 AM PST

Brits got the first crack at the Samsung Galaxy Nexus almost a month before Google’s home territory, but they’ve been lacking a couple of options thus far. Samsung’s trend of releasing staggered white versions of its major phones will continue with the Galaxy Nexus, according to listings at Expansys and Handtec. The frost white model should become available “in the next two weeks” according to the former, and on February 6th for the latter. In addition, both are taking pre-orders for a 32GB version of the grey model, due sometime in the next month.

Americans have been able to buy the 32GB version from Verizon since December, where it’s the only model on sale. The US LTE version is so far the only one in the world that’s been equipped with 32GB of stage space, double the base GSM/HSPA+ version. Since Google made the controversial choice to omit a MicroSD card slot in the Galaxy Nexus, on-board storage is a prime concern for many buyers. At least a few UK customers have been very vocal in that particular complaint, so double storage may go a long way to ease their concerns. The white version is only listed at 16GB so far.

Other than a new color or the extra internal storage (which adds no wight or extra space) the HSPA+ versions of the Galaxy Nexus should be identical to their forebears. That means a gigantic 4.65-inch 720p Super AMOLED screen, a curved glass design on a plastic body, a 5 megapixel rear camera, and of course, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with an unlocked bootloader. Naturally the phones on sale in the UK are unlocked, and there’s no plans for carrier subsidies as of yet. The white version should have the same ~500 GBP price tag, while the 32GB version is listed at 599 pounds on Handtec. There’s no word of white or 32GB versions coming to any other markets just yet.

Android-based TelyHD lets you Skype from the living room

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 08:34 AM PST

Android’s openness has been questioned as of late, but there’s no denying that the open-source operating system has a wide range of applications for those willing to explore them. Case in point: Tely Labs’ new video chat device, christened the TelyHD. The camera and Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip combination allows just about anyone to use Skype’s video calling feature without the need for any extra hardware. The company has partnered with Skype to ensure a smooth and self-contained experience.

Basically, the TelyHD is just a rather nice webcam and microphone combination with video and audio TV output, and a small Android-based box in between them to run the numbers. The OS displays on the television and connects to a local WiFi network, with a small remote controller to navigate the on-screen interface. While the TelyHD is compatible with Skype, it also communicates with other TelyHD units for free video chat plus a simple email/messaging system and photo management, ideal for the less technically inclined.

This system probably isn’t targeted at the average Android Community reader, but since it interfaces with Skype out of the box, it might be great for friends or family member who aren’t so geeky. That said, the combination of Tegra 2 and basic video out is interesting – with a little hacking, an Android-based Kinect analog is not impossible. The TelyHD system is on sale now, with a $249.99 price in North America.

Snapdragon GamesCommand launches at CES

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 07:56 AM PST

Got a Snapdragon processor and a penchant for mobile gaming? Then you’ll want to check the Android Market on January 10th, just as the Consumer Electronics Show gets in to full swing at Las Vegas. The Qualcomm-backed GamesCommand store will feature games specifically designed and enhanced for the company’s Snapdragon family of SoC’s. Over 100 games will be launched on the service initially.

The Snapdragon processor has been an Android staple ever since the original Nexus One, and HTC has used it in major releases like the HTC EVO, DROID Incredible and Thunderbolt. Nvidia’s Tegra and Texas Instruments’ OMAP series of ARM-based systems have become more popular as of lat,e even on HTC phones and tablets, so Qualcomm is looking to drum up some more interest in its own products. To that end, the GamesCommand store is a lot like Nvidia’s Tegra Zone.

GamesCommand will feature many of the same games you can buy in the regular Android Market, but also several exclusive enhanced titles, including Fight Game Heroes, Bunny Maze 3D and Desert Winds. Fight Game Heroes might be of particular interest to fans of mixed martial arts, as it pits real fighters like UFC combatant Alistair “The Reem” Overeem. The initial GamesCommand release will be available in North America initially, with a worldwide release later. Qualcomm will be on hand at CES to show off its soft wares.

Samsung introduces white Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 07:28 AM PST

It seems like everyone is getting a pale re-release of Samsung’s flagship, and now The Now Network has joined the party. The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (pause for breath) will get a Frost White version, to compliment the more sober black model on sale now. Just like the current SGSIIE4GT, it’ll go for $199.99 with a new service agreement, and presumably the same $499.99 price off-contract. You can pick one up starting on Sunday, January 8th.

By now Android enthusiast should be familiar enough with the American versions of the Galaxy S II, but just in case: Big Yellow’s version of the phone comes with a 1.2Ghz Exynos dual-core processor, 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen, 16 GB of internal storage and access to the WiMAX network. It’ll run the same Gingerbread version of Android that they’ve all been using since launch, but Samsung has promised an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich early in 2012. Samsung ROMs for the international version of the phone have already leaked out, complete with the TouchWiz interface.

AT&T and T-Mobile have already released frosty versions of their Galaxy S II variants, which are blessedly bereft of triple subtitles. For AT&T you can get the white version of the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, the upgraded model that sports LTE connectivity. Samsung’s smartphones tend to look pretty smart in white, and considering how many have been given the option as of late you might want to wait before purchasing the upcoming Galaxy Note or Galaxy S III, just in case a more fashion-forward hue becomes available a few months later.

Google TV switches from Intel to ARM amid low sales

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 06:57 AM PST

The saga of Google TV has been something like a ballad of lament over the last few months, with Logitech abandoning the platform completely and interest drying up after the Honeycomb update. There are probably some considerable changes for Google TV coming in 2012, but one of the biggest has just been announced: future hardware will be built on ARM-based chips, like most Android smartphones and tablets. Previously Logitech and Sony’s designs were based on an Intel x86 reference.

Chip maker Marvell will be providing the basic architecture in their ARMADA 1500 HD Foresight system, which is specifically designed with high-definition video playback in mind. The SoC is capable of decoding two 1080p video streams at once, as well as 3D video, in a hardware package with no moving parts. It should be easy enough to integrate into new televisions and set-top boxes, and consume considerably less power than previous models. In all likelihood it will be cheaper as well; a big entry price was one of the biggest barriers to Google TV’s adoption, as Logitech’s executives have said.

Google’s Vice President of Product Management Mario Queiroz had this to say on the change:

The Google and Marvell teams have been working closely together to bring our combined software and chipset technologies to market to grow the Google TV ecosystem of manufacturers and devices. Marvell-powered Google TV solutions will enable powerful products to be brought to market at attractive prices.

Despite the initial setbacks, Google seems to be completely behind its set-top-box product. Chairman Eric Schmidt said in a recent interview that he expected Google TV to be on the majority of TVs by this summer. A lofty goal, to be sure, and one that will require cheaper and more efficient hardware in order to be realized. LG is rumored to have new Google TV-equipped displays ready for CES 2012, making it only the third OEM to build for Google TV and the second in active development.

Acer Iconia Tab launches January 15th for $330

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 06:41 AM PST

Acer’s update its initial tablet model has been floating around for a couple of months, and in another one you’ll be able to buy it for yourself. The Iconia Tab A200 will be available at major retailers starting on February 15th, for an MSRP of $329.99. That’s about a hundred dollars less than the A500 model it’s replacing. An Ice Cream Sandwich update was promised sometime in February, but it looks like the tablet will still be running Honeycomb 3.2 at launch.

For your coin you get the standard 10-inch, 1280×800 screen, a Tegra 2 processor and a gigabyte of memory. Storage space starts at just 8GB, but for just $20 more you can get a 16GB version. It’s a chunky tablet at over a pound and a half, but for the extra girth you get a full-sized USB port, a MicroSD slot and a standard-sized microUSB port for charging and syncing. There’s no rear camera at all, but a 2 megapixel front-facing camera should serve for web conferencing. Mindful of the mediocre battery life on the A500, Acer rates the A200 at either hours. Connectivity is limited to WiFi and Bluetooth.

As interesting as the A200 is, you might want to hold off on the preorder for now. There will be dozens of tablets on display at CES next week and Mobile World Congress, and certainly at least one or two new ones from Acer itself. We’re particularly eager to see the Iconia Tab A700, a monster Tegra 3 tablet rumores to have a full 1920×1200 display. That one’s likely to be quite a bit more expensive, though, so if you’re looking for a budget WiFi tablet with the standard featureset, go for the A200.

Motorola enthusiasts approach their limit – bootloaders still locked

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:28 PM PST

Earlier this year, Motorola had pledged to unlock the bootloaders on every one of their devices before 2011 year’s end. Well that didn’t happen. And even worse, they haven’t let the community know when or even if they are still going along with this plan.

An unlocked bootloader allows users to modify the software included on their device. It isn’t important to many, but to the developers out there it means the world. With their own cooked up kernels and ROMs, they push devices way past their original thresholds.

HTC has undoubtedly been the best manufacturer at making sure their devices are completely unlocked for their customers. Motorola has potential, but haven’t conveyed a gameplan for at least 4 months. Hopefully, the petition started over at XDA Developers will overturn their silence and raise clarity on the subject.

Samsung Replenish updates to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) today

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 07:42 PM PST

The Samsung Replenish isn’t the fastest Android device, but it sure is the most environmentally (and economically) friendly device on The “Now” Network’s lineup. Though Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) was already released, it is highly unlikely devices with hardware limitations such as this will ever see an update. Fortunately, the Replenish has already started receiving an update from Android 2.2 (Froyo) to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

It may not be too different cosmetically, but Gingerbread should still breath new life into the phone. It may slightly improve battery life too. The update will be coming as an OTA (Over-The-Air) and if your device hasn’t received it yet, then don’t worry – it’s coming. Android 2.3 will increase the OS speed and efficiency, add one-touch word selection, and add an SMS messaging fix.

To force Hopefully, most of your devices are on at least Android 2.3 by now, and if not luck may come your way like it did for these folks. And for you Replenish owners out there – how is the update treating you? Was it a smooth transition from Froyo to Gingerbread? Let us know.

T-Mobile LG G2x gets a MIUI Port

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 05:23 PM PST

The LG Optimus 2x has been enjoying the beauty of the MIUI custom ROM for a while already but sadly the T-Mobile G2x users weren’t so lucky. Thanks to some porting of the official MIUI for the Optimus 2x users of the LG G2x can now enjoy the same awesome ROM. Other than CyanogenMod, MIUI is one of the most popular ROM’s available and I’m sure many will be happy to give this a try.

While we’ve already seen plenty of builds of MIUI hacked to run on the G2x having an official build ported from the twin brother makes this as close to official as possible. For those that have been wanting to enjoy all that MIUI has to offer this is a great place to start for you G2x users. Thanks to XDA we have all the details for those looking to give it a try.

According to the official thread at XDA by stormageddon everything appears to be fully working and running great. That includes full WiFi calling, and all of the official features from MIUI. It even has the popular Trinity kernel for those that would like to also overclock their G2x and that dual-core processor to some impressive speeds. I know my old G2x handled 1.6 Ghz with ease and I recorded some stellar benchmarks that you can see in the links below.

Head on over the the XDA link below and give this a try today if you’re the modding or overclocking type.

Galaxy Nexus gets ClockworkMod Recovery with on-screen touch controls

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 03:47 PM PST

This shouldn’t really come as a huge surprise to most folks and I’ve been wanting something like this for a while now. Being able to control my recovery with the Nexus One ball or myTouch 4G trackpad it was only a matter of time before someone made on-screen touch controls like Ice Cream Sandwich. That is exactly what we have here — ClockworkMod Recovery Touch Alpha.

Thanks to Nathan Grebowiec and his post over on Google+ we now have the popular CWM Recovery with full touch control navigation. Using the built-in controls of Ice Cream Sandwich he’s modified an up and down arrow, as well as back and enter as shown in the image and video sample below.

For those wondering you still have full access and use of the hardware navigation (volume up/down) as well as the option to fully use on-screen controls to navigate through the recovery and flash ROM’s or Nandroids and all those other things we love about Android. Nathan mentions this is still very much a work in progress (given the alpha 1 name) and that he’ll be updating with more features soon. There appears to be a few bugs and weird screen flashes but the initial response seems to be that this works great.

It was built using the stock CWM v5.5.0.4 and should not cause any issues with backups or restores. From the comments on G+ it appears to be working great. For those needing to root first check out our guide below, then give this a try and let us know what you think. Great work Nathan, keep it up!

SugarSync updated, now syncs videos to your PC automatically

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 02:45 PM PST

If you’ve ever used SugarSync you’ll know it’s one of the easiest ways to automatically add pictures, or files to your PC from your Android device all wirelessly. Being completely free I’ve used it plenty in the past and today it got a whole lot better. They’ve just announced AutoSync, now offering the same free syncing capability for videos too.

No more searching for a USB cable or removing the micro-SD card to add pictures or videos from your Android device to the computer. You can do everything completely hassle and wire-free using SugarSync. Once you download and get all the settings and set up finished the rest is completely automatic and requires no action from the user.

SugarSync is calling this a “zero-step” process for getting pictures and video on your computer. When you capture video it will detect and upload the video to the cloud (in the background) then transfer your movies right to your PC. SugarSync knows that tiered mobile plans are also an issue and will not sync videos over 3G/4G and instead will wait for a WiFi connection to start the process — with no interaction from the user. Even if you have pictures set to sync over 3G it knows to wait for WiFi with large video files.

I’ve used this a bit in the past but Google+ was doing most of this for me, but not video. And now with AutoSync for video I’ll be using this plenty in the future. I have a feeling this could come in handy for those special or urgent moments. For those looking for an extremely quick, easy, and hassle-free way to get all their content right to their PC look no further than SugarSync — update available now. Check out AirDroid too if you haven’t already.

Samsung has teamed up with EA Mobile and are now offering the exciting new shooter Dead Space for Android completely free. Sadly Samsung Apps is not currently available in the states, but many other users worldwide can participate on this one — More details below.

When I saw this I was extremely excited. Who doesn’t like free games? Then I remember that although a large part of Northern America is supported, the US is not. All the information and details are available from SamsungApps.com and you’ll also be able to check their map for eligibility there too.

If you’ve been eying a new game for Android or have been hoping for a deal on Dead Space today is your lucky day. ASUS Transformer Prime 1-click root and unroot tool released [Update]

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:31 PM PST

Yesterday brought all kinds of exciting news for ASUS Transformer Prime owners and now we have even more. We learned the bootloader will be unlock-able, and that it will be getting the much anticipated Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update starting January 12th. Now today the root method we mentioned earlier this week has officially been released, and is as simple as a click.

Thanks to the popular developers from @TeamAndIRC we not only have an awesome and simple root method for the Transformer Prime quad-core tablet, but they’ve released it as an easy 1-click root and unroot tool. The root method was shown off on video yesterday (linked in timeline below) and today the full method is available for anyone with a Windows PC.

The steps are extremely simple. If the image above doesn’t give you an idea of how easy this is then I don’t think I can be much help. Select 1 for root — done! Obviously users will need to have ADB and the Android SDK up and running properly but if you’re planning to root your device you probably should have that done already. Here are the extremely simple instructions just in case someone needs them.

— Download the root tool .zip
— Plug in your Transformer Prime and make sure to install the drivers located in the included .zip
— Run the viperMOD Primer Tool.exe and choose an option.
— Done!

All of the details can be found over at the RootzWiki thread. Make sure to ask any and all questions before proceeding and remember — continue at your own risk.

Enjoy!

Update: After the last update the original Transformer wasn’t able to be rooted. It appears this simple 1-click method works on the original Transformer too. Good luck!

HTC quad-core Tegra 3 devices coming soon after CES

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 11:58 AM PST

With dual-core smartphones being all the rage right now we can’t help but glance ahead at what to expect in the months following CES. Obviously much of the attention has already managed to turn from dual to quad-core smartphones and tablets — especially in the Android world. While the ASUS Transformer Prime is currently the only NVIDIA Tegra 3 device on the market, it wont be for long. We are now hearing rumors suggesting HTC will be quick on the draw to release some quad-core devices of their own.

We can expect an overwhelming array of smartphones and tablets during this years CES, and we’ll be their live to get everything on video too. Recent reports from DigiTimes claim that HTC will be unveiling their new quad-core phones after CES sometime in February. Leading us right into the next huge mobile event in MWC 2012.

This also means they might not be presenting any quad-core devices at this years CES at all, and instead wait until Mobile World Congress in Spain to share the details with the world. MWC has always been a strong event for HTC and this year it’s looking to be the same. The reports also suggest an April launch for said devices, beating the competition to the market. We’ve already seen a few leaks of upcoming Tegra 3 quad-core devices like the HTC Edge but for now they’re staying tight lipped on the matter — and with good reason.

With the rapid rate that technology has been growing as of late you can expect a huge race to quad-core devices to start developing in the early months of 2012. Who’s excited?
