Pantech Magnus 4G LTE leaks for AT&T

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 11:34 AM PDT

The folks from Pantech are finally ready to make a bigger splash here stateside according to the latest leak of the companies upcoming smartphone. Pantech has remained quite here in the states other than a few budget phones but this new Pantech Magnus is looking to change that. With impressive specs this phone could be “great” so lets take a look.

According to our good friend Wikipedia Magnus stands for “great” and that is exactly what AT&T and Pantech are going for here. The Pantech Magnus packs some top tier specs that should break them from the budget crowd and hopefully into the limelight. Their hardware has always been quite decent, and hopefully they leave Android completely vanilla without any overlays.

We can clearly see Android 4.0 ICS (or Jelly Bean) on screen navigation keys so that is a good sign. Then the folks from Engadget who received this leak state it will be powered by the popular 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 found inside many top end smartphones like the Galaxy S III. It will also have 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and of course AT&T 4G LTE speeds.

The leak doesn’t give any additional details but we’re hearing (and have seen leaked benchmarks) stating this will in fact sport a 720p HD display. Given the image it looks to be a 4.3 or possible 4.5-inch smartphone, then we have a front 1.3 VGA camera and an 8 megapixel shooter on the rear with LED flash. the design looks relatively safe yet of good quality — although the HTC DROID Incredible like humps on back are a bit odd. Hopefully the folks from AT&T and Pantech will mention more about this smartphone in the coming days or weeks. Hit the links below for additional Pantech news.

ZTE Grand X IN announced with Intel processor and Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 11:07 AM PDT

Ever since Intel announced their new Medfield processor set to power multiple upcoming Android smartphones and tablets they’ve been rather quite. We saw a few at Mobile World Congress and this week things are starting to pick up. Moto has a Intel phone coming and today at IFA ZTE just announced the first Intel-powered Android 4.0 ICS smartphone.

To be specific the processor under the hood is an Intel Atom X2460 processor although the speed isn’t quite known. We’ve seen the Grand X from ZTE before but this slightly improved version now has Ice Cream Sandwich, and of course the star of the show being the new silicon under the hood powering that frozen ICS.

You’ll get a 4.3-inch qHD 960 x 540 resolution here, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, an 8 megapixel camera on the rear with flash, and a 1650 mAh. Personally that is a pretty small battery considering what we’ve been seeing the last 6 months but if the Intel chip is efficient, that should be fine. We have our doubts though.

This device will work with 4G HSPA+ up to 21Mpbs and has Intel Hyper-Threading Technology embedded like all their CPU’s. This they claim will bring ultra smooth and fast performance, web browsing, multitasking and more. The new and improved ZTE Grand X IN will be available across Europe next month. Hit the various links below for additional ZTE and Intel news.

Motorola DROID RAZR M leaks on video

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Motorola’s upcoming DROID RAZR M 4G LTE device for Verizon Wireless just can’t stay out of the cameras wandering eye. After countless leaks the past few weeks today we have our best look yet. A quality HD video showing off the new smartphone has been leaked to the folks over at Engadget. The phone looks good on video so check it out below.

This 4.3-inch qHD smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor which the leakster called "fantastic." He also mentioned that the device had a battery big enough to last more than all day even with full 4G LTE usage. That sounds good to me right about now. While we don’t expect this to have a huge RAZR MAXX or DROID RAZR HD sized battery — Motorola’s been keeping that area top notch.

If you’d like to see the new DROID RAZR M show off it’s snazzy new boot animation, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, settings menu and more head to the Engadget link above for the leak.

As you can see from the images below the device looks rather impressive. We’ve been told the rear 8 megapixel camera is pretty excellent but as you can see the housing managed to get in a fight, and it lost. It’s completely broken and hopefully that has been changed in retail units. The device will also have a 3 megapixel front camera that should beat most smartphones for video chat. Earlier this week we saw a silver or white trim finish, possible aluminum but for now we’ll just have to wait for the September 5th event where Motorola will unveil what they’ve been cooking up. Stay tuned as we’ll be there live.

Horn adventure game by Phosphor Games lands on Android

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 10:16 AM PDT

NVIDIA Tegra 3 device owners will be the first lucky few to enjoy the brand new action adventure game called Horn from the popular Phosphor Games crew. Horn was selected as a premiere title from Zyna’s moble developer program and it has been making quite a splash for its graphics and gameplay. Available on iOS already, today it is Android’s turn for all those Tegra 3 toting devices.

With cinematic battles and next-gen graphics Horn looks to impressive everyone. Think Legend of Zelda meets Infinity Blade rolled into one and produced by the same guys that made the stunning and exciting game Dark Meadows. Having a game with not just great graphics, but an open-world environment, an awesome and inviting storyline, and great gameplay is hard to find for mobile — but Horn looks to deliver.

The story starts with the main character Horn, a young blacksmith’s apprentice, who wakes up to find his entire village ruined and overrun by large, sometimes humorous, monsters. He quickly realizes that the community of people and animals have actually been cursed and transformed into these monsters and he must use epic weapons, combat situations, and thought-provoking puzzles to make his way through the open world of his once flourishing village. Have your attention yet? Lets take a peek.

Horn will be slaying mythical and huge creations (some that look like Transformers) and will need to collect magical stones along the way. Some are harder to earn than you think so be prepared to work for it. The overall fighting, mechanics, and gameplay is fluid, fun, and engaging. No clunky controls here and instead you’ll use a combination of swipes and flips across the screen all with intuitive swipe controls.

Now Horn is more than just a hack em and slash em game full of gore. You have stunning graphics and visuals, excellent voice-overs, a top-notch story, and is an overall quality game that you’ll be enjoying for hours and hours. If you’re a Zelda fan be prepared to play Horn for the rest of the week. Again the graphics are seriously impressive, and thanks to the one and only NVIDIA Tegra 3 you’ll be playing along smooth as butter (can’t say the same for the iPad version) and the improved visuals on Android will surely make all gamers happy.

Horn by Phosphor Games is available starting today, right now from the Google Play Store and as usual on the NVIDIA TegraZone. As an added bonus if you get lost in the world of Horn feel free to check out this massive online instruction guide thanks to the developers. Check out other awesome Tegra HD games linked to below.

HTC Desire X hands-on

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 08:50 AM PDT

HTC is staying rather casual this year at IFA 2012, but their low profile did manage to bring one new smartphone to our hands. Meet the recently announced HTC Desire X. It’s more compact than the larger HTC One X and One S, while having a bump in size and specs over the budget-aimed One V. HTC is aiming for the middle of the road mass market with this device so lets take a peek.

Once in your hands you’ll quickly get comfortable with the rounded edges, usual HTC quality design, and soft coating on the rear of the device. A lot of the aesthetics can be attributed back to the One X, and that’s a good thing. For some 4-inches might be the perfect size and HTC is aiming right for that crowd as well as newcomers with the Desire X.

The only downside here is the 4-inch display comes in a last year (or older) spec of WVGA 480 x 800 resolution, not even qHD here. That would be the only negative when using this otherwise beautiful smartphone. They’re trying to hit a price bracket here, but we would have loved a qHD display.

As far as the specs under the hood goes this phone is right in the middle of the One S and the One V. HTC’s equipped it with Qualcomm’s popular Snapdraon S4 dual-core processor, only at 1.0 GHz. You’ll get 768 MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and micro-SD for expanded storage options.

Other specs include Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Then as usual we have HTC Sense UI 4 over the top looking as smooth as ever. HTC also opted for a 5 megapixel camera in the Desire X, but again megapixels aren’t everything and their dedicated Imagechip makes for an impressive camera. You’ll still get excellent photos, video recording, photo-in-video capabilities, zero shutter lag, and continuous shooting modes.

Being a budget phone HTC is hoping for a price of around $375 unlocked, and carrier pricing will vary with contracts and what not. If this can come in under some of the products from Sony or LG for a good price on contract HTC will have a real winner here. HTC’s confirmed a mid September launch window across Europe and Asia. Take a peek at the rest of our photos to help you decide if this is right for you.

Lenovo announces IdeaTab ICS tablet family – keyboard dock included

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 05:35 AM PDT

Lenovo has just announced an entire family of new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets here at IFA in Berlin, Germany, and we have all the details. Today they’ve actually kicked off by re-introducing the IdeaTab S2110 (known as the Lenovo S2) tablet hybrid rocking a keyboard dock similar to the Transformer Prime as shown below. Then they have a quad-core Tegra 3 tablet and more. Take a peek below.

The Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 will be their flagship model simply for the fact that it has all the things you’d ever need and more. Running on a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (same as Galaxy S III) for 3G/4G LTE connectivity, a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 HD resolution display, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a decent little 5 megapixel shooter on the rear.

The included keyboard dock will work in a similar fashion as others from ASUS, and will double the tablets battery life from an estimated 10 hours, to over 20 hours. Other specs include a 1.3 MP front camera, micro-SD for extra storage, mini-HDMI out options, Bluetooth 4.0 and a built-in FM radio. You’ll have full Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Google Play Store support and the IdeaTab S2110 can be yours for $399.

Next up they’ve also announces two new siblings that you could call better, or worse. These are quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 powered tablets, and one is currently available as we speak at Best Buy as one of the better tablet deals available. These are called the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 and A2107. We mentioned these last week when the A2109 broke cover. It offers a 9-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display, quad-core, Android 4.0 ICS, 16GB of storage, micro-SD, mini-HDMI and more all for $299 — making it one of the best price/performance tablets next to the Nexus 7.

Then Lenovo has also just announced the smaller sibling — that being the IdeaTab A2107 with virtually the same specs as the version mentioned above, only comes on a smaller 7-inch frame. The A2107 will still sport a 1280 x 800 HD display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as micro-SD and HDMI-out options but pricing on that model has yet to be announced. Hopefully it will be $249 or lower and compete directly with the Nexus 7 as we are expecting the same Tegra 3 quad-core under the hood. Stay tuned for additional details on that 7-inch model.

HTC Desire X gets official: 4-inch screen, Beats Audio, ICS on a budget

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 11:33 PM PDT

Here at IFA 2012 in Berlin, Germany, it is HTC’s turn to show off some of their new announcements. While they didn’t bring tons to the table we do get a brand new smartphone to share. Today they’ve officially announced the recently leaked HTC Desire X budget smartphone for the European and international markets. Have a look below.

We’ve seen a few recent leaks and pictures regarding this phone but today HTC confirmed all the details. This is the HTC Desire X and will be their new well-rounded budget smartphone. Specs you ask? You’ll get a 4-inch WVGA 800 x 840 resolution display, a dual-core 1.0 GHz Qualcomm S4 processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, micro-SD support and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. The S4 processor is an underclocked lower model that is found in the AT&T HTC One X — and should be plenty powerful.

This smartphone and all the details leaked earlier this week so nothing announced here should really come as a surprise. This is a similar device to the HTC One V announced at Mobile World Congress back in February, but is more well rounded in most areas and has a bigger display. The size fits perfectly between the One V and the One S — and the price probably will too. You’ll get a 5.0 megapixel camera, Beats Audio integration, and HTC’s Sense UI 4.1 running on top of Android.

The dedicated HTC Imagechip allows for continuous camera mode up to two frames per second, smile detection, take images while recording video, and all this with zero shutter lag. This is everything we’ve seen and love about the HTC One X, HTC One S, and V only the Desire X is even more budget friendly. Check out the pictures below and expect some hands-on video coming up shortly so you can see this decently sized mid-range device in action.

Google Now updated with new notification cards and team edit options

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 04:38 PM PDT

We have some excellent news this evening. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean‘s awesome Google Now feature, also known as Google Search has just received a very nifty update from Google today adding tons of awesome features. As many of you know Google Now gives weather and traffic alerts, sports scores and more all in neat and easy to read cards. Now they’ve added tons of new notification cards and the option to edit teams.

Google has just issued the update this evening and it focuses on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean devices with full Google Now capabilities. Before you could do awesome things like search for sports scores and then it would remember your favorite team and give you alerts. What if that search was just for a friend? Yup I searched for SF Giants during Google IO and apparently I’m now a San Fransisco Giants fan — when I clearly am not. This is probably the most exciting part of the update for me. Here’s the changelog:

* Movies – see movie showtimes and more
* Public alerts – receive emergency messages such as storm warnings and earthquake alerts
* Add favorite sports teams to follow in real time (from Settings)
* Support for Korea

Now you can search for a movie and get alerts on showtimes in your area, all based on location. You’ll get public alerts for local weather like flash flood warnings, hurricanes (watch out NO), and many other local alerts. Then last but certainly not least is the option to add, edit, and follow in real time all your favorite sports teams. Awesome! Now I can finally get Green Bay Packers alerts all season long. Thanks Google. Oh and Go Rodgers!

They’ve also added support for Korean, and we’ll be getting more language support in future updates. The brand new Google Now update is available right this moment as we speak on the Play Store right here. If you still haven’t seen our awesome demo of these awesome features be sure to check out our Google Now hands-on video.

Motorola DROID RAZR M 4G LTE leaks again, this time in white

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 04:13 PM PDT

If you’re looking for an upcoming smartphone from Verizon Wireless with those quick 4G LTE speeds we might have just the device for you. It’s from Motorola and is rumored to be called the DROID RAZR M. This budget friendly improvement over the first RAZR has leaked again this afternoon, only this time in white so lets take a look.

We’ve heard plenty about this Motorola smartphone in the recent past, and it was also leaked late last week as a budget smartphone headed to Verizon for $149. That isn’t technically “budget” friendly but considering many current phones have launched at $199 or even $249 — that is a bargain.

The Motorola DROID RAZR M looks very similar to the original DROID RAZR and still features the Kevlar coating on back and 8 megapixel 1080p HD video capable camera, but this leak shows a white or what almost looks like an aluminum silver model. The image above was conveniently leaked to Engadget just a week or so before the big reveal. You’ll also get a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor and a 4.3-inch qHD display and Ice Cream Sandwich with the new smartphone.

Motorola and Verizon are hosting a media event on September 5th many are expecting to be the DROID RAZR HD that has seen plenty attention as of late. New details have many thinking they’ll drop both their new flagship RAZR HD, and this newly leaked budget DROID RAZR M at the same time. We’ll be live in NYC for the big Motorola reveal so stick around Android Community for all the details.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean leaks for Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:42 PM PDT

When Google announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean they stated multiple devices would be getting upgraded to the latest and greatest around mid July. While the Galaxy Nexus was listed everyone knows Verizon likes to take their sweet time. Now it’s nearly September and we still don’t have Jelly Bean. Don’t worry thought because late last night it leaked and is now available to all.

Yup the GSM Galaxy Nexus has been enjoying Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for a few months while those are Verizon are stuck waiting for Big Red to approve and allow the update. Last night however a test build of the official Verizon update (with new 4G radios) was received by a lucky few and shared to the interwebs for us all to enjoy.

This is the absolute latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean build direct from Google, build JRO03O, and is available now for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus according to Droid-Life. The zip that was leaked can be flashed from ANY Android ROM directly to your Galaxy Nexus and you’ll be enjoying a completely stock (but rooted) and lovely version of Jelly Bean. Here’s how:

Instructions:
– Download: update_jro03o.zip
– Reboot into recovery and make a backup.
– You should probably wipe data and cache at this point.
– Then "install zip from sdcard" and find the file you just downloaded.
– Watch it install with your recovery of choice, reboot, and enjoy.

Since this leak of Jelly Bean is official and from the folks at Verizon along with it came some new radios. What this means is they’ve improved their 3G/4G signal, or at least made some changes for the better in Jelly Bean and you can expect more bars, faster speeds, and hopefully faster 3G/4G transitions. Hopefully this means the official update from Verizon themselves is finally ready for prime-time and we might see it later this week.

If you give the leaked Jelly Bean ROM or radios a try feel free to comment below and let everyone know how it goes.

Update: This update appears to be official as Google themselves have also published Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus to their own servers. This is completely stock, unrooted, and will need to be flashed over the official Verizon Galaxy Nexus update version IMM76Q. The latest official update was IMM76K, so this isn’t for everyone. Use caution. Click here to download.

Google’s new Nexus 7 TV Ad is all about family

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 01:48 PM PDT

Google’s been busy lately showing off their new and impressive Nexus 7 tablet. First with nice little heartfelt commercial showing a father and son camping and reading with the tablet, and today they’ve done it again. Google’s latest Nexus 7 commercial will hit close to home and is full of family entertainment.

When Google isn’t busy casually advertising their new creation with style right on the Google homepage, they’ve been showing the fam that you can video chat with Grandma, hold the tablet one handed while reading cooking instructions, or even give a child details to help her dream about going to the moon. Yeah, they pulled out all the stops on this one.

Siri might be able to tell you a joke, but Google Now and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean can tell your kids detailed information about how far the moon is away. Then those kids can then dream about the Moon, Mars and more. Neatly they’ve named the commercial Curiosity and we find it rather fitting.

From Curious George reading on the couch to cooking in the kitchen the ASUS and Google made Nexus 7 tablet does it all. As I’m sure you all know, we are huge fans here and if you didn’t see it be sure and enjoy our Nexus 7 Review. This commercial was a pretty great well to sell potential customers on a budget friendly, family friendly Android tablet. Thoughts?

Samsung: Jelly Bean for Galaxy S III and Galaxy Notes coming “very soon”

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 12:22 PM PDT

Good news was announced today right on stage by Samsung during their Unpacked event at IFA 2012 in Berlin, Germany. They confirmed that an update should be headed to your device here “very soon” containing none other than Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. With the Galaxy Note II being announced already running Jelly Bean this update should basically be expected.

Previous reports and rumors slated the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III to arrive on August 28th, but with this event going on we figured they’d wait to drop that update to keep the limelight on the Galaxy Note II. That appears to be exactly the case with Samsung stating that the update isn’t available yet — but users can expect it “very soon.”

Samsung detailed that the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note (1), and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet can all expect to see updates to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shortly. So for those wondering, we still don’t have a confirmed date and would have loved more details, but we’ll take what we can get for now. These devices run great on ICS but we’d love those tasty Jelly Beans.

In case you missed anything you’ll want to hit the various links below where we detail the announcement of the Galaxy Note II, as well as our own in depth hands-on pictures and videos. Samsung also released a Galaxy Camera with an awesome 4.8-inch display too so you won’t want to miss that. For an idea of what to expect from Samsung with Jelly Bean enjoy the hands-on video or hit the various links below for Galaxy S III Jelly Bean software leaks from last week.
