HP Bender Android smartphone leaks in benchmarks

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 03:37 PM PDT

Whoa! It appears that HP is looking to possibly mount a comeback because an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich powered HP Bender smartphone has been spotted in a few benchmarks. HP could be looking to start up right where webOS left off and switch gears to the wonderful world of Android — just like they should have done years ago.

Our good friends from SlashGear said it best this evening, when they mentioned “We’re back, baby” in regards to HP. What they’ve been tipped off with today is some GLBenchmarks showing what appears to be an unknown HP smartphone rocking the one and only Android OS.

According to the leak this is an HP smartphone with the codename “Bender” and it is running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core S4 processor too. Something we haven’t seen in an HP device. This has literally just hit the wires so we are still digging for additional details. Take a peek at the benchmark results below.

Clearly we see everything mentioned above. Running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and oddly enough the resolution is listed as 1366 x 720 — leading us to believe this could very well be a tablet too. Many Android smartphones have recently launched with 1280 x 720p HD resolutions and the same goes for tablets, but this looks a bit different. Maybe this could be a Galaxy Note II rival from the folks at HP but so far we are pretty light on details.

Pretty interesting leak to say the least. Could HP be looking to finally dive into Android full steam, and if so, would you buy an HP smartphone?

Galaxy Note II on AT&T rumored for October 21st debut

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 03:04 PM PDT

Samsung’s latest and greatest phablet in the Galaxy Note II sure has impressed us so far, but we are still awaiting more details for a US release. So far Samsung has been tight lipped on when or where we’ll see their new 5.5-inch smartphone phablet hit the streets. Today however, a few rumors are pointing to late October for at least one US carrier.

According to those folks from BGR Samsung is looking to launch their new and impressive Galaxy Note II on at least AT&T starting October 21st. That means we only have a little over a month of waiting before we can enjoy that powerful smartphone with 4G LTE. We know the Note II is set to launch in October, but Samsung at IFA said it would hit the US and other regions “later this year.” Coming late October would be awesome, but we aren’t getting our hopes up.

Other reports suggests that Samsung is looking to take the same approach as they did with their wildly successful Galaxy S III and launch the Note II on multiple carriers in the US all within a similar time frame. We could see AT&T get it first and lead the pack since they exclusively launched the first one, or we might hear more reports next week mirroring this one — only for Verizon, T-Mobile and more.

We know many have been hoping for a Verizon Galaxy Note device and a few previous leaks have seemingly confirmed that Big Red will indeed get the Note II. Now the question is if we’ll get the same 1.6 GHz quad-core processor or have it replaced with the popular dual-core in the Galaxy S III. Hopefully the Note II comes to all the major US carriers but for now we’ll just sit tight and wait for more details.

NVIDIA tops Android gaming with 5 million TegraZone downloads

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:21 PM PDT

If you’re a fan of Android gaming as of late then surely you’re probably rocking an NVIDIA-powered device. The folks from NVIDIA have continued to push the gaming front with not only their high powered Tegra 2 and quad-core Tegra 3 devices, but with the TegraZone app center. Today they’ve proudly passed 5 million downloads.

Today NVIDIA is commemorating their milestone of passing 5 million downloads from just the Google Play Store alone (not counting Tegrazone.com) with a blog post you’ll want to check out. If you have an NVIDIA-powered smartphone or tablet but don’t have their obviously extremely popular TegraZone app, you probably should hurry and get it by clicking here.

What does this actually mean for us? Nothing really. What it means for the future of Android smartphones and tablets when it comes to popular games and apps however is the important part. The fact that they’ve had their popular app downloaded so many times is proof to how popular the Android gaming market is, and we can expect to see these types of apps and games continue to arrive — all with NVIDIA leading the front.

For details and information on the absolute best and latest Android games the TegraZone is one of the best places to look. Games like Shadowgun, Dead Trigger, Dark Meadow, Beach Buggy Blitz and more all have launched exclusively with NVIDIA before hitting the rest of Android. As usual we will continue to follow all the awesome HD games from NVIDIA and if you’d like to check out what they’ve released thus far check out our NVIDIA TegraZone Portal.

Google Wallet gets pulled from Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 01:01 PM PDT

So Google Wallet has never officially been available for Verizon, on any smartphone. However for months now users have been able to side-load Google’s awesome Wallet app for mobile NFC payments using the web store, or installing a custom ROM. Today however it appears that Google’s pulled the backend plug.

I actually used Google Wallet on my Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus just last night without issue. This morning though, we are now greeted with the image you see above. Launching Wallet you’ll be greeted with the sad news that the app isn’t supported with this current version, then directs you to the Play Store where nothing is available. Maybe an update is coming with Verizon support? Yea, we highly doubt that.

Apparently the current “version” is no longer supported, but that is the only version available. Sadly it looks like either Verizon, Google, or both have managed to find away to kill off this awesome feature for everyone. Just yesterday Google announced their Wallet service has doubled in usage (in just one month) since allowing all major credit cards access. With them removing devices access like they’ve just done here we don’t see those numbers continuing to climb.

Most likely the awesome developer community will quickly and easily find another way around this situation, but for now we’ll be stuck without Google Wallet — or just install an older APK. For those that have been unofficially enjoying Google Wallet, let us know if you are seeing the same prompt.

Update: It appears that many users (us included) have successfully restored to an older version and things are working again. Google Wallet version 1.5-R79-V5 works fine here — while v6 gave the error shown above. Give it a try folks!

LG Optimus G spotted in first TV commercial

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 12:23 PM PDT

LG’s new Optimus G is set to be quite the powerhouse smartphone. With only a few days left before the official LG unveiling we are now seeing our first actual live look at the smartphone in a Korean TV commercial from YouTube. LG will be sharing it with the world early next week in Korea, then later this month here in the US — but we can enjoy a quick peek right now.

The quick TV ad for the new LG Optimus G is simply called “I’m a boy” and we’re hearing it will hit the airwaves later next week after they make their official announcement. LG already announced the smartphone in general, but we’re expecting full details, release date, pricing, and hands-on very soon. Enjoy the quick video:

For those out of the loop, the Optimus G is packing quite a punch. This is LG and Qualcomm’s new combined flagship offering. You’ll get a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 True HD IPS+ display that LG is talking highly about, Qualcomm’s brand new 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and a massive 13 megapixel camera. Those specs surely outshine another device that was announced this week.

The commercial hints at 4G LTE capabilities, shows off that 13 megapixel camera, hints at waterproof features, and of course shows that massively bright and vivid display at the end. LG’s been teasing this smartphone for the past few weeks and are surely excited to release it to the world. We’ll be keeping up with all the details so stay tuned.
