Verizon Galaxy S III update incoming with plenty of fixes

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 11:19 AM PDT

Verizon’s popular Samsung Galaxy S III flagship smartphone is apparently set to receive its first software update sometime in the next few days. The folks at Verizon have just detailed an upcoming update that looks to resolve multiple problems, bugs, and a few connectivity issues too. Now if only they’d hurry with that Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean update!

In the usual Verizon fashion we have learned of the update from their official support page, stating the anticipated update for their version of the Galaxy S III is coming soon. The update will bring the smartphone to build VRALG7, and one big change is they’ve fixed that pesky “no sim” error some have been reporting.

As you can see from the document below, other update details include improved connectivity, improved stability with Backup Assistant, Verizon’s remote diagnostics tool will be installed so they can fix any problems remotely, and even S-Beam is getting a little improvement.

When Verizon posts official update details to their support pages this usually means the update will arrive over the air in the next few days, usually in under 48 hours. It’s safe to say this update will be arriving soon, but who knows when Jelly Bean will get the same treatment. Recent reports suggests October so we’ll have to wait and see.

Nexus 7 cyan blue official ASUS case available from Newegg

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:48 AM PDT

For those who are still seeking a case for their awesome new Nexus 7 tablet, we might have one for you. When Google announced the tablet ASUS was teasing multiple travel cases coming soon in an array of colors. Sadly those haven’t arrived yet and the grey model available on the Play Store has been sold out for weeks. Newegg.com has us covered though.

The official ASUS-branded Travel cases for the Nexus 7 are no where to be found. The only version on Google’s Play Store, the grey model, has been sold out since the first day and hasn’t made another appearance yet. Newegg however has both the grey and the neat looking Cyan blue cases available and in stock for $19.

ASUS initially teased multiple different colors and cases for the Nexus 7 tablet, and last month we saw a few “official” leaks of even more accessories. Things like an official dock and keyboard but so far we haven’t seen any of them officially become available — or even be announced.

If you’d like to see these cases or what ASUS is calling a travel cover in action, then check out our hands-on video. For those sad folks that still don’t have the joy of owning the Nexus 7 tablet, you’ll want to enter our Tablet Giveaway! Get the official ASUS Nexus 7 Travel case in cyan blue from Newegg today and let us know what you think.

Verizon 4G LTE expands in 12 networks throughout the Midwest

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:02 AM PDT

We haven’t heard from Verizon recently with their continued rollout of their impressive 4G LTE network for the US but they’ve still been laying it down. Verizon has recently announced that an additional 12 markets across the Midwest will all be expanding to greater 4G LTE speeds, as well as a few new locations too.

Verizon has been rather vocal about their 4G LTE, and with good reason. Being the first to LTE as well as offering the widest range of Long Term Evolution data speeds for the US smartphone market they are certainly entitled. Verizon recently announced they’ve already met their 2012 rollout goals but haven’t stopped there. Here’s a few new locations set to enjoy it:

Coffeyville, KS
Expansion in Pittsburgh, PA areas
Emporia, KS
Lawrence, KS
Bremerton And Silverdale, Washington
Rolla, MO
Hays, KS
Kansas City, KS/MO areas
Tampa Bay, FL
Fort Myers, FL
Tallahassee, FL
Buffalo, NY

The list above are markets that Verizon Wireless 4G LTE will be launching this month, or expanding to offer greater coverage as well as faster, more stable speeds. Verizon was rather vague on when we can expect the LTE to get the green light in these locations however, and only said it was “coming soon.”

Verizon’s 4G LTE is now available in over 370 markets across the US, and has a reach of around 75% of Americans. It’s safe to say AT&T and the others have some serious catching up to do. Below you can see more details on previous LTE updates, as well as a few new phones from Verizon Wireless to enjoy with those lighting fast speeds.

Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE announced for $99

Posted: 14 Sep 2012 09:56 AM PDT

The folks from Samsung have been busy the past few weeks launching budget smartphones for almost all carriers as of late. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have all received similar mid-range smartphones that offer impressive specs for the price, and today the Now Network and Samsung announced their new budget 4G LTE smartphone. Although we aren’t sure how much LTE you’ll be finding since this isn’t Verizon or AT&T.

Meet the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE available this Sunday for just $99. What you’ll get here is a near top end smartphone with similar specs to the Galaxy S III, only for $99 and a slightly smaller screen. The Victory is rather impressive and has a unique design that is unlike anything we’ve seen from Samsung recently.

With the Victory 4G LTE you get a 4.0-inch display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a decent 5 megapixel shooter all in a sleek package. Many budget smartphones are slowly offering quite impressive specs, and this is certainly one of them.

The Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE runs Samsung’s skinned version of ICS, and you’ll get all those neat features like S-Beam, S-Voice, AllShare Cast and the many other improvements from Samsung. Currently the Now Network doesn’t have much for 4G LTE coverage but if you pick this up starting Sunday September 16th, for $99 you’ll be set for when it expands nationwide. Who’s interested?

Motorola DROID RAZR M Review

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 04:50 PM PDT

The DROID RAZR M was recently unveiled at a Motorola event by the once Googler turned Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside. With Motorola’s new plan to release nicer phones with a better experience can the RAZR M deliver? This smartphone packs a powerful dual-core processor, Verizon’s LTE speeds, and Motorola’s new edge-to-edge display technology all in a small and affordable package. Lets take a look below.

This smartphone is not quite top of the line but a perfect smartphone in terms of today’s sense for the mass market. Motorola’s packaged a very well designed lightweight yet powerful phone and made it extremely affordable starting at only $99. To start you’ll want to check out our in depth hands-on unboxing and video review, then check out all our photos and details below.

Hardware
While Motorola has been making positive strides in their software and update schedule, the star of the show here truly is the hardware. We have a tried and true Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.5 GHz processor chugging along with ease, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, micro-SD support and the usual top tier specs all in a super sleek phone. Motorola’s brand new edge-to-edge display technology is the second neat thing about this phone. It’s smaller than any other 4.3-inch display touting smartphone, all thanks to the sleek bezel and Kevlar design to keep things small and sleek, yet durable.

Other specs include a decent (with enough light) 8 megapixel camera with flash, a 1.3 front shooter for self portraits, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a very industrial design. That industrial hardware is made up of lightweight plastic, brushed aluminum on the front to protect the display (and keep bezels small) and the Kevlar coating on the back. The screws on the sides keep the aluminum that protects that beautiful screen thin and helps make the device so small. Here’s a few looks of the hardware.

P1100411 P1100410 P1100412

The left side houses three screws and a little door to access the micro-SD for expanded storage and Verizon’s 4G LTE sim card, then you also have the micro-USB port for charging. The bottom comes to a point and you’re greeted with nothing but a microphone, then around to the right is the rest of the goods. The left side you have the same 3 screws, the power button, as well as the volume up/down rocker. Then the lone port up top is the 3.5 mm headphone jack. This is the first RAZR without a micro-HDMI output so it’s safe to assume you won’t be using any Moto lapdocks with this.

Then the last bit of details on the hardware include the massive 2,000 mAh battery under the hood. Having a device this thin and this small with only a 4.3-inch screen yet still a large battery is quite a feat. This should offer exceptional battery life and so far we’ve been pleased but will talk more on that below. When HTC’s One X and its large 4.7-inch body can’t hold a battery this big, you see why we like Motorola’s choice here.

At first I didn’t think I’d like the smaller design or actually having no bezel to rest my hands or idle fingers, but after a week of use I can say I absolutely have enjoyed the hardware here. Motorola has a real winner with the DROID RAZR M, especially for only $99. The hardware is top-notch and you’ll surely be pleased.

Software
Software is a hit or miss for many, and with Motorola I’m at a middle road. While they’ve obviously skinned and tweaked Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with their “blur-ish” user interface it is no where near as different as Sense UI or Samsung’s Touch Wiz. Add in the fact we have on-screen nav buttons as Google intended and I’m slowly becoming a fan of Moto’s software. Running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich everything is great here. Motorola announced the phone with Jelly Bean models on stage so it’s safe to say that update should be here soon — as long as Verizon doesn’t interrupt.

As you see above this is clearly Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The usual Verizon bloatware was included but for the most part there wasn’t anything too extreme. Verizon phones are now coming pre-loaded with a bunch of Amazon apps so we can call that bloatware now. One nice thing is Google Chrome browser comes pre-installed, but they’ve also replaced the original Android browser that was capable of Adobe Flash. For that you’ll need a third party browser now, but I’m not complaining.

Screenshot_2012-09-07-18-10-00 Screenshot_2012-09-07-18-09-07 Screenshot_2012-09-07-18-07-53

One thing worth noting, which I also showed in my in-depth video above, is the swipe to left feature for quick settings. I love that Motorola has added this although many have opted to use the notification pulldown bar for these features. It’s a different approach and I’m enjoying it thus far. Then the Circle Widget is simply awesome. I want it on all devices and again I show that off with detail in my video above.

Performance and Benchmarks
Performance thanks to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Qualcomm dual-core processor was extremely fluid. Android has continued to evolve into a finely tuned machine and this is a prime example. You don’t need absolute top of the chart specs to have an awesome and well performing phone. We aren’t saying the CPU isn’t top of the chart — because it is — but a qHD res, smaller display, and petite package doesn’t mean the phone won’t perform. This device rocked with benchmarks and like most S4 devices we got nearly 5000 in Quadrant.

Daily usage was a breeze. I rarely had any moments of lag or stutter to even mention either. While Motorola’s UI changes aren’t my favorite, they certainly aren’t slowing down the phone and causing issues so we have no complaints here. Next up lets talk about speeeed. Verizon 4G LTE has continued to improve and Motorola devices always seem to fair the best with it too. The RAZR M was able to achieve blistering fast speedtest results on 4G LTE in San Fransisco, Las Vegas, as well as Utah. And yes I’ve been to all three in the past 6 days. Here’s our results — I’ll let them do the talking.

Camera
Motorola’s cameras haven’t quite been as good as Samsung or recently HTC’s but the past few devices they’ve surely improved it. We get a quality 8 megapixel camera with the DROID RAZR M but it still lacks in those low light situations where others have managed to improve. A few pictures inside while still full on detail just didn’t have enough lighting for a quality photo. Overall however the images outside were decent. The shutter speed has been seriously improved and is extremely fast so you won’t be missing that important shot. The front camera as usual is 1.3 MP and isn’t anything too special, but works for saying hello on video for a moment. Here’s a few camera samples:

IMG_20120910_190834_036 IMG_20120913_111605_231 IMG_20120913_111252_613

The little man sleeping is Finley (out Golden Doodle) but the shutter sound woke him from his sleep — poor guy!

Battery Life
Motorola has been aiming for battery life with their last two generations of smartphones, and it’s a choice I think was a great move. HTC’s One X has a massive 4.7-inch screen and a quad-core processor but only has a 1,800 mAh battery and has many users complaining for something better. Say hello to Motorola. Their RAZR MAXX packed a 3,300 mAh battery and lasted nearly 3 days in our tests. With the all new DROID RAZR M they’ve found a perfect happy-medium with a great sized smartphone and a decent battery too. This device has a 2,000 mAh battery yet remains just 8.1mm thick at the fattest point.

Motorola didn’t want to compromise on battery life yet still have a thin “RAZR” quality smartphone, and with the M they delivered. As you can see below on 4G LTE battery life was exceptional and some of the best we’ve tested lately. I used the phone for a full 8 hour day which included almost 1 hour of viewing NFL Mobile live video playback, multiple different browser sessions, a few phone calls, and then some speedtest runs and I still have 50% battery life. That means you can basically toss this phone through the ringer and use it heavily all day long and still have some left to spare. I love it!

Wrap-Up
When Motorola first announced the new RAZR series and the RAZR M I wasn’t too sure I’d be pleased. After spending more than a few days with the all new RAZR M we can indeed confirm they’ve stepped it up a bit in all areas. The hardware is great, the software is fast, the screen is awesome and the phone has great battery life. This phone really is an exceptional price/performance device and you can’t go wrong with it.

This is a fun addition to the RAZR family and certainly can hold its own against the others. It might not have an HD screen but that edge-to-edge display is vivid and looks great. The only downsides to this phone are the the display not being quite as nice as others, and the industrial design. If you can get over the slightly unique design elements or don’t have $200 to spend on a new smartphone the RAZR M is perfect.

The Motorola DROID RAZR M is available starting today for just $99 with a new 2-year contract from Verizon Wireless. Go check it out!

Steve Wozniak on Samsung-Apple verdict: ‘I don’t agree with it’

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 03:24 PM PDT

Apple and Samsung‘s high-profile patent case riled up a lot of people on both sides of the argument, and today legendary Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak gave his take on the whole tussle. In a new interview with Bloomberg, Wozniak said that he doesn’t agree with the decision. He also said that he thinks companies should just share patents with each other, which would allow for the development of the best devices possible.

When asked for his thoughts on the trial, Wozniak indicated that he didn’t like the way things went down. “I hate it,” he said. “I don't think the decision of California will hold. And I don't agree with it — very small things I don't really call that innovative. I wish everybody would just agree to exchange all the patents and everybody can build the best forms they want to use everybody's technologies.”

We think that Woz is onto something here, but don’t count on the big manufacturers of the world to pay attention. Apple, Samsung, HTC, Google, and many others, hold vast patent portfolios, and they aren’t likely to begin sharing them freely anytime soon – especially when we’ve seen just how much money you can make when someone infringes on your patents. Still, it’s a nice thought, and it would allow all companies to offer the best devices they can.

Coming back to reality for a moment, Wozniak also revealed in the interview that he’s a Samsung Galaxy S III user. He said that he hopes the iPhone 5 will be able to snap better pictures that his Galaxy S III, since the S III’s camera delivers better results than his iPhone 4. He said the same about the Motorola DROID RAZR, so it looks like Woz is quite the avid Android user, despite being Apple’s co-founder. What do you think of Wozniak’s idea that everyone should exchange their patents?

Nexus 7 gamepad controller made at home by Instructables

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 01:27 PM PDT

Who loves their Nexus 7 with that powerful NVIDIA quad-core processor and all those HD games but sometimes wish they had an easy way to use a game controller? There’s a few different gamepads available and Archos has their own idea in mind, but the folks from Instructables have made this awesome homemade gamepad controller and stand using a PS3/Xbox controller — and it is awesome.

What you see above is the awesome and budget friendly Google Nexus 7 tablet that many of you should already own (if not, enter our giveaway) then they use some crafty handwork and mount it right to a PS3 controller for the ultimate Android gaming experience. Awesome right?

In case you aren’t familiar with Instructables.com they show you step-by-step instructions on how to make things with their tagline “share what you make.” So after we saw this awesome Nexus 7 mod we had to share it with our readers — since we know many of you have the awesome little tablet. To make the awesome device you see above this is all you’ll need:

– Nexus 7 Tablet – $200
– PS3 / Xbox controller – $50

For the Mount
– 1/8″ dia x 48″ Mild Steel Rod -$3 (OR 1/8″ dia x 48″ Copper Rod)
– 48″ of 1/8″ MDPC Expandable Tubing – Comes in packs of 20′ rolls for $7
– This is the stuff that people use to manage cables inside of computers. But you want to have a flexible tube that won’t scratch your device.

– 1/8″ Heat Shrink Tubing – $2
For some grippy stuff and to clean up the ends.

So for those who already have a Nexus 7 as well as a Xbox or PS3 controller this mod will only cost you a few dollars from your nearest hardware store. Get a few vice grips, some tough muscles and you’ll be ready to enjoy Dead Trigger, Shadowgun, or even the brand new Beach Buggy Blitz with an awesome controller instead. Motorola Atrix HD update rolling out with fixes for camera, battery and more

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:31 PM PDT

The first update for Motorola and AT&T’s new Atrix HD is finally rolling out this morning. The folks from Motorola have just issued and detailed their first bug fixer update — and it’s a biggie. This update will bring the 4G LTE HD handset to software version 77.12.22 and along with it is a slew of improvement. More details after the cut.

If you’d like to know more on the Atrix HD you’ll want to take a peek at our Motorola Atrix HD Review. We didn’t find too many problems with the rather impressive budget friendly smartphone, but today they’ve fixed tons of bugs that should only make this smartphone that much better.

The update won’t change your Android version which will still be Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Although you can expect improvements to WiFi performance and stability, better battery life, and a much improved camera. They are stating better color reproduction, better low light performance, and a few other things related to the camera. That isn’t all either because the list is quite large.

Below you can see the full changelog listing all the various fixes. They state EA and Gameloft game improvements as well as a slew of other changes. Then as usual the bloatware has been updated and overhauled and you might find a few new AT&T bloatware apps — but that is nothing new. For now the update should be rolling out as we speak and you can find more details at the Moto source below.

Google Wallet usage has doubled since allowing all major credit cards

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:06 PM PDT

Today Google is looking to gain a little more traction in the eCommerce world by announcing that their Google Wallet mobile payment system has nearly doubled in usage since opening up the app to all major credit and debit cards in the latest update. That means in just over a month usage has completely doubled. That is a good sign.

Google Wallet hasn’t taken off quite like us, or Google expected, but that could be in part to the fact that only one US carrier officially supports the mobile payment solution. I myself have been using it with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus for months at 7-11, Airports, and Starbucks all over town and find it super useful. What about you guys?

Discover Card recently made their own little customized area and artwork of Google Wallet for their cards, and Google is hoping other credit card companies follow suite. They’re also nicely asking for anyone that wants to participate in Google Wallet contact them for details. Pretty interesting blog entry Google.

For now this technology is still extremely early and in its infancy, and I can’t see it replacing my actual wallet (or money clip as shown above) any time soon. Once we start seeing NFC stations and MasterCard PayPass terminals across the US more then it could become a truly useful feature. So far my biggest two uses are the Airport and Starbucks. What about you guys? Where do you use Google Wallet — if at all?

AT&T HTC One X+ 4G LTE with Tegra 3 spotted at FCC

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT

Rumors of an HTC One X+ have been floating around for some time now, some even stating a model arriving for T-Mobile. Today however a new and improved Tegra 3 powered quad-core 4G LTE One X+ has hit the FCC en route to AT&T. NVIDIA’s Icera modem recently was approved for AT&T 4G LTE too, so this makes perfect sense.

We still aren’t fully sure what to expect from the folks at HTC but they have an event coming up next week where we’ll be learning about what they’ve been brewing. These recent FCC filings have all but confirmed the device exists, and rumors have suggested it will be designed very similar if not the same as the previous One X. I’m hopeful for a larger battery though myself.

We’ve seen reports that the NVIDIA Tegra 3 has been boosted to 1.6 GHz on all four cores, as well as 1.7 GHz for the fifth “ninja core” that does the simpler tasks at hand to preserve battery life. The folks from Engadget uncovered this FCC filing earlier today so now we just need to wait for HTC to make a formal announcement.

NVIDIA has stated their quad-core Tegra 3+ with 4G LTE radios would make it to market before the end of 2012, and they look to be right on track. Hopefully HTC is aiming for an October launch — which also lines up with a few recent rumors although nothing can be confirmed at this moment. For now it appears that an improved HTC One X+ is for sure headed to AT&T, and possibly to the folks at T-Mobile too. Stay tuned for details from next weeks event.
